@@DungNguyen-dk8wm I understand, hopefully he uploads some Fifa content, but for the sake of his mental health, he shouldn’t FIFA’s scripting is unreal, it causes pain and rage, and I prefer these irl vids, I know about things I never know about football now.
This video didn’t age well. Phillipe Troussier took over and now Vietnam are at their worse since before park. Zero points at the Asian cup, outside 100 fifa rankings, losing 8 of their last 9.
As a Dutch guy who only really got into Asian football after the 2014 world cup this is great. I noticed that Vietnam was on the rise (again) after the last Asian cup and now at the world cup qualification. So thank you for telling us the story of the Vietnam national team!
As a Vietnamese, I'm flattered by your in-depth research about our national team, you managed to cover most notable events there is really, including some I have no clue even existed lol. The effort you put into these videos are almost unmatched and takes some sheer skills and dedication. You've earned my absolute respect and I can't wait for this vid to blow up. ❤ P/S: If you need someone to make a Vietnamese subtitle, you know who to ask 👌
I feel like this video didn’t dive into Vietnam’s run at the 2018 u23 afc championship as much as it should. Then again that could be a completely separate story and video just for how amazing it was. It marked the beginning and hope of a golden generation. All the unbelievable upsets, (don’t forget the background to this story is Vietnam was supposed to be completely outmatched by everybody. And to make it worse we’re in a group with South Korea and Australia.) but not even the upsets themselves but just the way these upsets happened (last minute goals, comebacks, penalties), as well as a heartbreak ending in the last minutes of extra time in the final..with heavy snow falling..something some of the players haven’t even witnessed in their lives..it’s probably the most emotional and greatest story in Vietnamese football history no debate. It could be made into a movie, And probably one of the best footballing stories in general but it’s not talked about because 1, it’s only an under 23 tournament and 2. It’s the AFC
Yeah I absolutely wanted to talk more about the feats of that U23 side but it just woulda added another 5-7 mins to the video. But it really is such an underrated and captivating story. Maybe I do a video specially on that story, because I’d absolutely love to do that
@@Maqwell Please do , im interested in knowing more of that story, im an Argentinean randomly following Vietnam NT, you guys are gonna be there in 2026 if you continue same path.
seems like he is not doing it, maybe because there are many things worth doing more, so I will tell this here for anyone interested, and it will be SUPER long so think wisely before click 'read more' rewind a little bit to just a few months before the run, the same Vietnam squad was eliminated in SEA Games after being bashed by Thailand 3-0, everyone thought this generation was done, I even remember that there were a quote from someone saying that "we are not that good, we just thought we were", every Vietnamese football fan was losing hope. Park came to Vietnam NT in suspicion, fans believed that his dynasty would end soon, that he won't be able to do anything. Even after Park and the boys beat Thailand 2-1 in M150 Cup, we still think that it was just luck, that Thailand is not even care about that friendly tournament. The AFC U23 Championship 2018 began in January and the 2-1 defeat against S.Korea at the first match did not help drawing more attention to the team. And then it happened, Vietnam beat Australia 1-0 and draw Syria 0-0 to advanced to knock-out stage, and then beat Iraq on penalty shout-out in one of the most thrilling match of the tournament. People started watching the tournament, cheering like the SEA Games incidents few months ago never happened. In the semi-final Vietnam faced Qatar, one of the favourites with many talents preparing for World Cup 2022, many of them were key players in the Qatari squad winning Asian Cup a year later and advanced to Gold Cup 2021 only to lose to the eventual champions USA. The game was held in a work day, but actually not, because everything was stop so people can watch the match, including works, study, even funerals and weddings, girls who had never watched football before also waited for it like they were hardcore fans. It was another thrilling match where 3 goals were scored within the last 10m to bring the match to extra time and penalty shoutout, where Vietnam beat Qatar to go to the final. The whole nation went crazy, celebration broke out everywhere in the country (I remembered seeing my super serious 60 yrs old teacher running around the school hall, shouting and waving the national flag like a teenager, and then got injured), the party started in around 6pm after the match, all the way to the next morning. Then, the final, people gathering in the city center and the national stadium, in front of giant screen, creating red seas of peoples. Everything was stopped one more time, schools and works became giant fanzones, 50% of the news on TV was just about the final. The match was held in a condition that almost could not be worse for Vietnamese players, it was snow, something that most Vietnamese players saw for the first time in their lives, while their opponents, Uzbekistan, were too used to this kind of weather. Uzbekistan took the lead, but then Quang Hải scored a brilliant free-kick to equalize for Vietnam, the goal later was named "Cầu Vồng Tuyết" ("rainbow in snow") and became one of his most iconic moments in Vietnam's jersey. The game went into extra time, and in the dying minute, when everyone thought Vietnam would go to another penalty shout-out, Uzbekistan scored. Many fans broke into tears, it was raining in Hanoi, but many still stayed on the streets, singing Vietnamese patriotic songs, waving their flags. We started the tournament expecting to be thrashed by stronger teams, and ended up being the runner-up. The teams landed on Hanoi 2 days later and people went to street and welcomed them like they had won the World Cup, the Prime Minister gave the team medals. The team and fans went from the darkness of shame after SEA Games, to the paradise of happiness in like 5 months. Hope and trust of Vietnamese fans was lit up once again. The team later became the key of the senior team and went on to achieve more and more success to allow their fans to dream bigger and bigger.
That was definitely one of the best underdog stories in football and sports, it’s a shame it doesn’t get much attention outside of Vietnam or Southeast Asia but it’s an under 23 tournament and football in asia doesn’t really make the news internationally so you can see why. I would LOVE to see a movie made about this. It really is a great story. -you can start with some of the player backgrounds and how there were many players growing up poor - those generation of players going through the academy ranks to the youth national teams -meanwhile Vietnamese football struggles and the senior and u23 failures - these players playing for vietnam in the 2016 AFC u19 championship..reaching the semi finals and qualifying for the 2017 U20 World Cup, vietnams first World Cup ever in any age group. - the u20 World Cup and Vietnam gaining a point. -the 2017 Seagames failure 3-0 thrashing against Thailand - after the failure the new hiring of coach park hang seo to the u23 (and senior) team and the skepticism against him -the friendly tournament before the 2018 afc u23 championship, vietnams rematch with Thailand, with coach park leading them to a 2-1 win. And in that same friendly tournament…vietnam faced Uzbekistan…..coincidentally foreshadowing the final in few months time… - the main part of vietnams low expectation and underdog story with the new generation of players in the 2018 afc u23 tournament and all its matches. I think every single match was exciting and emotional in this tournament. Even the 0-0 hard defending draw against Syria -the Vietnamese support throughout the whole country during the tournament -the players entering the final in a blizzard with some witnessing snow for the first time in their life. Playing against Uzbekistan a team who has played in and are used to snow. (Shame on AFC that this match went on. There was an hour halftime delay too) -quang hais “rainbow in the snow” free kick goal to tie 1-1 -Vietnam losing in the final minute of extra time missing out on a 3rd straight penalty shootout -heartbreak and crying across the country and the players in the trophy ceremony -the players returning to Vietnam being treated like heroes, traveling on the bus parading and waving to millions of fans following them behind as they go across the bridge. The hope for Vietnamese football revived. A hope for a golden generation. They lost, but it’s as if they won. I hope some director picks this up, because it is a very inspiring emotional story! If this is made into a movie it would be so awesome if done correctly. Some of the events throughout and in this miracle run are seriously just too perfect for a football movie! And they’re all real. But forget movie, I just gave maqwell all the details if he actually does do a video on this singular story 😂.
14:15 Mai Duc Chung is actually the coach with highest winning rate in the Vietnamese football history, which is 100%. (2 matches, 2 legs against Cambodia and 2 victories.) However he has been a veteran as former national team member and the coach of Vietnamese women national team, and his success with the dragon girls are really impressive.
19:32 ngl as a Malaysian I can confirm that you guys break our heart with this goal but still it's really inspiring how good Vietnam national team is right now and I hope Malaysia can be as good as you guys in the near future ♥
As Vietnamese I can say he is honest player who never pretending to claim a foul before. What actually happen is he did got a tackled but he could manage to hold the balance. One moment flashback when fan blame him for tackled in box several times last match but not trying to claim a foul, him despite being a sharp shooter in club but have no goal in nattional team make he think: hold on I've got fouled, just roll like it should be. Fast move of Camera in this situation capture only moment after flashback make it really fake. That's why he claim it's real. Ref. may witness make it decision on his own. Even in asean vff is not a rich federation to buy ref( even fifa ref).
This goal is quite controversial , i have seen many Malaysian called its a dive but i swear to you Van Toan is a really honest player, the other camera angle show that he was fouled
I hope all ASEAN citizens can realize: 1) this is just a game, not as politically important as the unity of ASEAN group. 2) there were periods for GOOD players blossoming from each country, good thing that these happened at different time from 2009: Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and now Vietnam.
I'm from Ấn Độ and have been following Việt Nam since 2017 as my second team and I fell in love with passion of Vietnamese people, I even made friends from Việt Nam. I hope my country not only the team but fans are inspired from the football ecosystem in the rapidly progressive nation of Việt Nam. 🇮🇳🤝🇻🇳
I had no idea Vietnam and Thailand were rivals. I’ve always just over looked that part of the world. But with 2026 allowing like 8 or 9 Asian Teams, it sounds like Vietnam has a chance to qualify. So good luck to you guys
Vietnam just established the tension rival themselves. Thailand, meanwhile, has been already the rival of other ASEAN teams long before the merge of the 2 Vietnams.
@@duckstep9919 Well Vietnam lost because our country had just undergone two resistance wars against the French colonialists and the US imperialists, and the consequences of the war had not yet been healed, then we continuously entered the fight to protect the border (Southwest, the South of Vietnam). North in 1979). Although these battles did not last long, they caused losses and affected socio-economic development plans. Not only that, hostile forces fought day and night, and there were many plots to riot, overthrow, incite, and divide the nation, all with the support of reactionary external forces. :v
As a Jordanian, Vietnam made me depressed that day, but also y'all really deserved that win that team really surprised us, and your goalkeeper was insane that game, sad as a Jordanian tho since we beat the Aussies during the Asian Cup & we had our own optimism. From an outsiders view, that's when I personally really paid attention to Vietnam moving onto a more serious side (from a personal Jordanian perspective) As an anime fan, loving the Monogatari & Megalo Box OST references while I'm at it, as a Canadian, it's fun seeing Americans be in the mud by having Gregg, meanwhile atm us Canadians are on cloud nine with the way our team is shaping. I found your channel yesterday & I hope your content grows! Great content my guy! edit: wtf 6:13 got my nickname
Yeah I remember seeing you guys beat Australia and I was extremely anxious for Vietnam. Also holy shit hearing another person recognize and know MegaloBox is amazing to me. One of the most underrated anime I've ever watched. As for Canada, it's cool to see you guys finally on the up. Alphonso is a fucking beast and it'll be fun to see what he does in the WC potentially. But thank you for this comment!
As a Malaysian I gotta admit Vietnam is currently the strongest national team in Southeast Asia right now, even more so than Thailand or Philippines. Gutted about Malaysia defeat at 2018 AFF Cup & the latest WC qualifier in UAE tho haha
Yup,they were but if Thailand getting serious, they will beat everyone... They just afraid of Malaysia only since we were always Thailand's bogey team...LOL
As a Malaysian, always had hope that we can beat Vietnam. But its always a loss or close win :( Mad respect for Vietnam football, Best in ASEAN! Hope Malaysia can dominate ASEAN football like Vietnam one day.
I went to Vietnam in 2019 and I fell in love with the country, the people and so many things that since then I'm a strong supporter of the Golden Warriors(of course I got the Football team jersey).I have good friends there,so I want to come back as soon as I can
As a viet brother myself i am proud about this country and i am a huge fiery football fan for both clubs and nations.....but im a Barca fan so its mainly Nations but still proud of Vietnam.
This was so well done. I grew up in a neighborhood that was mostly Vietnamese and there always love for football so it’s nice to see that there is a promising and competitive team to support now. It’s also very interesting how conflicts, wars, and politics have shaped football in certain countries and regions. I think Vietnam is catching up from the division there was before. I think a video on the history of the Hungarian national team would be a good shout. I know you touched on it a bit in the video in the build up to the Euros but they were a quality and influential side from around the 1940’s-1970’s and I haven’t seen much about their history.
Considering the other Hungary video did so well, I just might do that sometime in the next few months. But thank you for sharing this man, always love reading your comments
I would love to see you take on Vietnam women's national football team also! They are truly PHENOMENAL, especially under the coach of Mai Duc Chung. For the first time ever in history, our women team is going to 2023 World Cup! 💛
didnt know anything about the viet national team until now, rooting for their ongoing growth and hope to see them in wc2026! All I know about vietnam is their delicious vermicelli bowls and viet subs which are very popular here in canada, sooo good
@@Maqwell and if we somehow qualify for that World Cup,it would also be our last. Our youth generation is not bright, not even close to this generation we are having.
This was very interesting to watch! I'm not even Vietnamese but I want Vietnam to rise and win against big countries, because I want socialist countries to win and with all the sanctions and wars Vietnam went through, its nice to see them getting theirs heads up
As a Malaysian, my utmost respect to the Vietnam Football Federation and also the Vietnamese fans for the rise of the nation! Hopefully Malaysia will be in your footsteps too but meh…
At least you guys have already gotten a taste of what it is like to win the AFF Championship. What in the world do we Indonesians have other than a crappy and corrupt federation, an awful league, and an awful footballing system?
@@zeinmets3550 Rising young talents and an established Korean manager. You’re following our path mate, would love to see your players in the next SEA tournaments!
Can you make a video on the 2007 Iraq AFC cup win. The country was in turmoil and was having many bombs. The team managed to unite under one goal and did the impossible winning the cup. Would really appreciate you making a video on it!
Well. Good luck for the vietnamese women at Vietnam's first actual World Cup ever in New Zealand and Australia. May spirits and strengths rise up against the American title defenders and the Oranje. 🇩🇪🤝🇻🇳
I have been following Vietnam's growth since last few years, massive progress.Wanted my country India to play against the most developed side from Asia,We will be playing Vietnam today.Whatever happens today,I have full belief that Vietnam will qualify for next world cup in USA,They can beat any best side on their day!
AMAZING Video, I dont know how but you have made me care so much about the vietnam national team. I wish I would be able to do a Fifa 22 career with Vietnam national team and get them the World Cup
That Van Toan penalty was an absolute joke, but I don't think I've heard or read any Vietnamese fans claim that it was anything other than a blatant foul. The local media certainly did what they could to further that narrative. The Vietnamese support for the team is absolute. That said, I can find plenty of horrendous penalty calls that have gone against Vietnam. I like your videos. Let me know if you're ever in the country. I'd be happy to bring you along to a V-league game or two.
I have nothing but Respect for Vietnam Football. Good Game..U Trash my Country Malaysia 3-0 today😅..and i want to learn how ure country improve so much in such a decade.
Alfred Riedl actually rejuvenated the Indonesian team (during which the FA had just come out of a lengthy suspension from fifa) to get to the final of AFF cup in 2016 after almost being eliminated in the group stage... And fell short to, *you guessed it* , the familiar foe, Thailand. And thus, the bloody AFF cup is still illusive to us. Welp. It was a really a surreal moment seeing them on tv at that time though... Ruhe in Frieden, Alfred Riedl :'( oh and props for vietnam for representing SEA in the final round of the wcq :)
And now we are going to be 2nd best for the 6th time in 13 tournaments. The pain never ends and will probably never end, unless those old and idiotic bigots that are ruling the federation realize the near-irreversible damage that they have caused and step down for good. Ps. That lengthy suspension was not lengthy at all. It was only a 1-year suspension
I really liked and enjoyed this video. As a Costa Rica football fan, I really enjoy these kinds of up and down football stories. I know this sounds crazy, but Vietnam should go to the US during a FIFA Window and play a couple of matches against LATAM teams. They'll get a very meaningful experience doing that.
Vietnam actually played curaçao in a friendly tournament in 2019 before the WCQ started. (Kings cup Thailand) They drew on 90 minutes 1-1 and curaçao won on penalties in the final. See friendlies are something that is viewed as very good for countries except for apparently Vietnam, because they don’t do it often, unless they are invited to a friendly tournament. when they do international friendlies, it’s against a weak opponent to win. Vietnams most recent friendly was against 150 ranked Afghanistan which they won easily. They had an offer from the Indian federation only a few rank lower than Vietnam for a friendly, but opted for Afghanistan instead. Wtf?
This is by far the best in-depth history of Vietnamese soccer team. Thanks for the amazing video, you allow me to catch up to some of the years i have missed (23 years to be exact). I left Vietnam in 2000 and only 13 year of age, i was hoping that someday Vietnamese soccer team can be recognize as a contender. In recent year we have stepped us so much and even have players travel to Europe to train.
VN still has a long journey up ahead. If they keep growing as they have done in the last few years, the dream of entering the World Cup will not be far.
I remember back in 2010 AFF us Malaysia managed to beat Vietnam even at that time we can feel the force of the rising team and now yall miles ahead of us while we stuck with some middle age Brazilian striker ffs
I wish this would have Vietnamese subtitles so I could watch this with my gf's dad. We don't speak the same language but love football and the best times I've had with him have been watching football after a delicious dinner.
OH MY GOSH THERE ARE EXACTLY 99 COMMENTS! I’m number 100!😆 Also, 0:33 the 1800’s are classified as the 19th century. I know this because the 1900’s are classified as the 20th century. 2000’s are classified as 21st century etc.
Yeeeaaahh I had someone point that out to me and having gone over the video like 10 times and not realizing that mistake still mind boggles me lol. But hey congrats on being 100!
@Maqwell I don't know if u know this but the Vietnamese women's soccer team qualified for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup their first ever tournament in history, can u do a video about that?
damn bro never thought I could watch one of my favourite football youtuber to talk about our national team. We're very proud of them, and our future generations of footballers just keep getting better.
Our attacker player get hit by vietnam's elbow 2 times in vietnam box yet no red card, not even a penalty! The red card that bitch Ryuji Sato gave happened outside playing field yet Vietnam got a penalty. Our player just clear the ball yet got a red card!
I remember back in 2010 AFF us Malaysia managed to beat Vietnam even at that time we can feel the force of the rising team and now yall miles ahead of us while we stuck with some middle age Brazilian striker ffs
Yooo, this video is sick, both the creator and the video. Can tell you really poured your heart out in this video. I will be waiting for the next essay video
