Matt lived with me and some friends for a year back in 2012. He is one of the nicest, most amazing people you'll ever meet. He popped in at a convention I was selling at in 2016 after not seeing him since, and he not only remembered me, but we reminisced about the days of living in Batavia, IL. I havent seen him since, but I really hope I do one day. My bf and I (who were living together in 2012 with Matthew) would love to take him out for a drink. Just like old times. ❤️ Matt, if youre reading this, this is Kiki and Brett and we miss you. ❤️

Really changes my perception of him to know he's Fredryk Phox. I never made the connection and it blows my mind that the same guy that made such a classic and pioneering viral videos from a period I almost forgot about in my childhood. Guy has been a natural talent and entertainer from the start.

No one’s gonna believe this but my brother was friends with the guy and I mentioned the whole robotic legs theory offhandedly and my brother told him about it and then the next day on his blog he made a joke image about it so I think I might be the reason the robotic legs joke exists in the first episode

"I'll go it alone from here" is a reference to the powerful moment where Fox decides to challenge Andross' lair alone in Star Fox 64. When I heard that for the first time, I got chills

Episode 2 really raised the bar for fan content for me. I’ve experienced some excellent stuff that’s fanmade, but this is a work of art in its own right. Everything comes together, the atmosphere, the voice acting, the gritty sci-fi storytelling and character drama, even when comedy does come in, it can be pretty funny too. There are so many scenes I can watch over and over again, James threatening the bandicoot with the slingshot, Bill and Wolf’s roast of each other, Andross’ speech, the Lemur Bros being absolutely terrifying, it’s phenomenally done

In a world full of Mario, Zelda, Pokémon and Sonic fan projects and fan made material of any medium, it’s quite surprising to see the amount of effort, passion, love and creativity put into Starfox of all things.

Even as someone who didn't grow up with the Star Fox franchise in just about any capacity (let alone most of the Big N's catalogue), I cannot BEGIN to tell you how grateful I am to have been introduced to Matthew Gafford's amazing works over the years. I don't know if it was an algorithmic fluke but having Matthew's content recommended to me on my RU-vid home screen all those years ago (even before episode 1 was released) makes me truly happy to think back on, as I was able to follow the project as things were taking off and I've followed things closely ever since. You really echoed my own experience with finding this amazing gem of a series and I'm tellin' ya, this guy deserves all the success this world can offer. Can't say enough good things about this series and it makes me so happy when I get the chance to share it with people hehe

Really love how the blender style allowed for dynamic detailed environments and shadows, but in the sole case of the train confrontation 52:34 , the older version and style to me is better. In the original, everything from the camera angles, to the fast and tight body movements, and the perspective of the back and forth is just mwah perfect. I feel the shots in the new rendition were too spacious and the close ups didn’t capture the tense atmosphere as well. However it makes sense way Gafford had to adopt blender. The diner scene exceeds the original style in every way and uses the blender technique. Can’t wait to see how he improves for ep3 also.

Soon as I saw the first episode, I needed more. The style, the tone, the sound design. Its a gritty space western that the 70s never had. Then episode 2 proved how mature with its themes it could get. Its so well directed, animated and written that this feels like a show that should be on Netflix. The way the game references are perfectly intermixed with the enviornments are perfect. Every character is well developed to where you feel invested. THIS is why SatAM and Archie Sonic ARE the best ver of the Sonic franchise. It fleshs out the world and characters aiming for an older audience and this series captures that essense. Dont care if I have to wait another 6 years cause quality and effort is hard to come by in modern entertainment these days.

Reminds me of a guy I used to know back on Nsider2. Used to play Animal Crossing City Folk with him for hours and he would go on about a Star Fox series he wanted to make and would make script after script. Was so good and I regret til this day not saving all his work, as it was seriously one of the best pieces of fan fiction I've ever read. The way the characters are wrote here makes me think so much of him. Hope he's doing well and has seen this by now.

Been a fan of Star Fox since 1993, a fan of Gafford since 2003. I know that Gafford has some fame, but really, with the level of talent he has it is insane that he isn't a household name in both comedy and animation. He is a great musician, comedic mind, voice actor, animator, director, artist, the list just goes on and on. I really enjoyed this spotlight you put together to showcase one of the most unsung greats of our generation.

This man learnt new animation softwares like Blender to expedite his workload better. This man even learnt to speak Russian so his russian characters would feel and sound authentic. I think he even learnt how to make a 2d sprite videogame for his upcoming project after fox in space. What an absolute hardworking legend and I just wished he'd take more breaks because it doesnt seem healthy to overwork

Was not aware of his videos before A Fox in Space, I remember it just coming out of nowhere and loved it. Alot more than Nintendo's anime short that came out around the same time as well as a new game. I figured that timing really helped him out! Everything about his vision was great. I cannot see Wolf preformed or written any other way now XD It's just too damn good. He's funny, witty, charming, cool, and Matthew's performance is just awesome.

AFIS and Matthew Gafford was a part of my life, and when I finally met him in person, he’s one of the nicest, smart, and funniest person I know. We’ve been the best of friends, and I was already in full support for his show. He also knows how to bring people together, and teaching anyone in Blender during his stream. I have watch him animate episodes 1 and 2, and now into 3. You’ll never find anyone this keen in animation and being a jack-of-all-trades kind of guy including voice acting experience. Absolutely incredible!

I hope after the success of the Mario movie, Nintendo starts to listen to their fans about their criticisms for Nintendo's lack of storytelling and wanting to stick to basics with most of their games. They need to start rewarding beautiful projects like this, and not punishing them. You could show someone who hasn't played Star Fox this, and it will make them want to play Star Fox. Nintendo really knows how to sit on a gold mine, and get angry about it!

What makes A Fox in Space so perfect is that it’s the exact cartoon I wanted to see as a kid with these characters. Star Fox in particular has such a mature premise. You are fighting an intense war in that game where people die all around you, and you’re avenging your dead father to boot. I always thought it would benefit from a darker themed cartoon depicting the events of the games, even if it’s just the prologue. This show makes a childhood dream come true for me.

Great review..! I'm glad to have enough to donate as well, to AFIS Episode 3 and The Violence when that kicks off; I highly admire that type of work ethic and how he keeps it real for other creatives.. I'll be nitpicky when you mentioned Ralph Bakshi and Rock and Rule it was the 70s; the film went through production hell and released in the 80s when the music included was considered outdated (but visually stunning nonetheless) I'm rambling 😅 I'll stop; thanks again for revisiting this..!

Count me also guilty of amateur-writing Star Fox fanfic stuff as a kid/teen. My main thing was I preferred to avoid writing characters that weren't mine, so I simply placed my story _in_ the setting. But as someone who keeps mucking about in various online roleplaying stuff... I still keep the characters from it around to this day, way more fleshed out than they were back then.
