My favourite performance was when I saw her live at the Hammersmith Odeon live in London 1979. I’ve seen some amazing gigs but Kate at only 20 years old gave me possibly the best live experience of my life. A genuine genius.
Thanks for the video, but this isn't an 'untold story'. Those of us who knew Kate before 'Stranger Things' knew this. She was, and remained to this day an artist with a massive legacy that had never been forgotten in the UK
Kate Bush is a poet who puts her words to music. And, her music is the platform for a her words. Kate's song, 'The Man with the Child in his Eyes', is one of those tunes that is written by a person who has magnificent insight into the human condition and is able to express it. The term 'Artist' is an over used word, now. Before, an 'Artist' was only for those who truly understood and shaped how we think and feel deep within ourselves and, by their creativity, altered our thinking. Kate Bush is a true Artist! She has taken her influences and made the world a better place to live in. X
Too right, Kate Bush has integrity and it shows in the quality of her work; it was always done the way she wanted and she never compromised for expediency or commercial reasons
I'm absolutely convinced her "Don't give up" with Peter Gabriel pulled me out of some really dark place, maybe even saved my life. Thank you Kate and Peter.
Born within 15 days of Madonna, yet she is the exact opposite. Kate never sought publicity, instead she crafted her art and let her music speak. Now both 63 and here we are again with Bush's music being discovered by countless new fans, while Madonna takes 'shocking' Instagram photos.
@aoggrta74 That contest is just a tabloid story. Remember, that Madonna had visited Kate's show "Before the Dawn" in 2014 (BTW: in an unusual "reclusive" way)...
One more bit of Kate Bush trivia: Big Boi of Outkast is a known superfan who has said multiple times that she is his favorite artist and he met her after a performance of her Before the Dawn residency in 2014. After years of keeping in touch on occasion, they finally were able to collaborate on a song last year. Big Boi says he will keep it unreleased until the public "deserves it" 🤣
Big Boi has a very special way to promote his new album, so I guess, it will take a long time to hear that song! ;-) Trust Big Boi, it'll be a massive hit single! Will the public ever "deserve it"?
I'm actually quite underwhelmed about that perspective. I can't stand anything remotely hip-hop. It's like taking a piece of filet mignon and spreading ketchup all over it.
@@Cicilo1983 that's a very personal opinion which no one asked for or cares about. Most of hip hop today is garbage, but outkast are one of the last few talents in that genre.
@@gatherme8655 Yes, but the same could be said about your own statement, couldn't it ? Blaming someone for sharing their opinion on a social platform would be like blaming salt for being salty. If you can't handle diversity of perspectives, avoid RU-vid (and all social media) at all cost.
I hate when you have groups like ‘Spice Girls’ saying girl power and all that, when they are a manufactured act assembled by men, performing songs by men, being labelled and marketed by men. Kate Bush IS GIRL/WOMAN POWER played the game by her own rules after her initial success, took control of her artistic output, refused to tour unless on her terms and was a superb writer and performer, the true leader with the power that comes with superior talent
Kate Bush is a true original musical genius. Unique, inspired, imaginative, totally gifted, and a one off. There is no other like her. She is, in my opinion, the greatest female singer songwriter ever. No one even comes close. Her work is exceptional in every way.
The music of Kate Bush is quick to give me a plethora of ideas for performance pieces. She is just SO AWESOMELY unconventional. "Running Up That Hill" is still a favorite song of mine, as well as her collaboration with Peter Gabriel for "Don't Give Up." I really should catch up with the rest of her discography.
She has a refreshingly pleasant English voice, every lyric is sang sweetly . In fact I saw an interview on TV in which she said on entering the world of pop music, she was puzzled why everybody sang in an American accent.?
Oh yes, you really should ! Her early stuff features a higher-pitched voice that some people find too much, but to me, they're awesome. "Never For Ever" and "Lionheart" might not be as innovative as some of her later work, but they're like storybooks for grown-ups, inventive and eclectic. "Aerial" from 2005 is also quite adventurous and mature. But really, all her albums are worth exploring. You'll have a great time. :)
I love Kate so much, all new fans should watch this! She was such a pioneer. I've been a fan for three years and she changed my life. But did the first word you said have to be "reclusive"? I don't think she is. I've heard stories of people seeing her, if they are true or not we can never know of course. She just wanted to live a normal life taking care of her child, and she likes her privacy like most of us do. She makes music when she feels like it and gets inspiration and not for fame. I admire her for this so much. It also makes her more mysterious, and when we do hear from her like just a few days ago it is so much more rewarding because we get to miss her.
Amen to that ! They said the same thing about Agnetha Faltskog of ABBA. These artists are only living a normal life and have no interest in the soul-sucking travesty of fame and media pandering. If that qualifies them as recluses, then most of us are !
Yeah, pretty cringe wording there. They could retitle and explain this is a backstory for those not familiar with her. Also, they open with "reclusive"--how about just "private"...sigh.
I think it’s an insulting to Kate to compare Taylor Swift and Adele to her. When in either of those above mentioned (other) artist’s careers have they ever released even one single song, without at least one other songwriter also taking 50% of the credit? (I can’t think of a single instance). Yet Kate has solely written ALL her material both lyrics and melodies completely and consistently on her own (apart from one single instance of a co-write with Prince in her entire 45 year and counting career). When have either of those other artist’s ever been responsible for programming or playing most (if not all) of the instruments on their songs? (Not very often and in Adele’s case never)!
Taylor Swift has many songs entirely written by her and many instances she’s played guitar and/or piano as the main instruments on her songs so don’t get ahead of yourself. In fact her entire album Speak Now was entirely written just by her. The comparison doesn’t take away from Kate’s talent, and you don’t have to put other artists down to elevate Kate. Why can’t they all have crowns?
Kate’s so we’ll respected by all musicians As David Bowie Yeah she’s not one for the spotlight & doesn’t crave attention, but she’s got everyone’s attention to this day Simple because Kate is a beautiful story teller & her art is amazing I still love WH and it’ll never date But the song I absolutely adore is Army Dreamers, it’s just great
My Mother used to sing Wuthering Heights when it first came out and as a child I thought it was such a strange song. I always admired her atistry and became quite a fan of her work over the last twenty years or so. I'm glad that a new generation of music fans are discovering her. She is a true artist, writing her own material at a very young age and not letting the business wolves mold or define her as an artist.
I’ve been a fan of Kate’s since Withering Heights release in 1978, I was ten years old. She learned Gaeilge (the Irish language) to sing Mná na hEíreann (Women of Ireland) which is hauntingly beautiful.
I am thrilled Kate is once again appreciated. First saw her in the 70s on SNL believe it or not. She did The Man w the Child in his Eyes. Stunning. My favorite album is The Dreaming but there is so much unique and beautiful music and video to choose from.
VERY much so, but unlike tears for fears that got the same magic and carry it and keep everyone aware of them even from the youngest generations, with kate due to stage fear she kinda dropped off the radar, i wish she did not. She is definitely the best female pop/rock musician to ever come out of the UK!
Ummmm no as a Brit, she has not been a recluse at all lol And her songs have been played in many films/TV shows here in UK, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands! + in your native US like: Hounds of Love-Shadow in the Cloud + Palm Springs both in mid 2020. My friend Fraser him and his family's GP was Kate's dad Robert Bush who worked in South East London in Plumstead. And we used to speak to him loads when he finished work or when we was in Kent in Bexleyheath,Welling, Dartford, Swanley, etc, on our bikes. He sometimes gave us a lift back to Kent from Plumstead-Such a nice man! + sometimes said hello to Hannah as well and she would make us massive jug of cold orange squash + met Kate/Del Palmer few times etc Great memories I will always cherish! 🥰
The Dreaming...nothing else like it in the world. I know a lot of people cite Hounds as her opus, but The Dreaming and Never For Ever are my two favorite albums by a female artist among many that I have. The only two that come close to the brilliance is Bjork and K.D. Lang...otherworldly music by all three, really.
Adore 'Never for ever' and the cover is incredible and 'The Dreaming' is a master piece and got me through a difficult time in my life. It's so out there and had a really Cathartic effect on me. Still love it and sounds as fresh and innovative as ever!!💜
I agree. Infact I think her early work is the best. Apart from her voice changing the last few albums have been mediocre and suffered from bad production. I know I will probably be slammed for saying so but it's just how I see it.
@@zaradragonia9863 You won't get slammed by me 'cause I agree. The Sensual World and The Red Shoes have some good songs, but those albums as a whole weren't the "experience" of her past work. If I could only have one album of hers, it would be Never For Ever.
@Angel MorningS I had a female Guinea Pig when 'Babushka' was released, and that's what I called her. I didn't realise at the time it means Grandma, or elderly lady lol
Kate Bush, one fantastic, song writer, singer and performer. From the 1970’s right up to the present day, everything Kate did was just fantastic.. now that the song Running up that hill has got the recognition it should have got original like it is now, hopefully they’ll re release more of Kates songs and hopefully new material now. An amazing female
May I say this: This was a fantastic (and solid) 10 minutes summary of the story so far! But "Blood Red Shoes"? Really? Nevermind, really good intro to Kate's work!
I watched the Cloudbusting video many times since it premiered on MTV in the '80s, never occurred to me the character is supposed to be a boy. Love her music and performances.
True indeed. I always felt they released the wrong tracks as singles from that album (it did less well than some of Kate's other albums). 'Suspended in Gaffa' and 'There Goes a Tenner' should have been the singles.
Kate its ONLY under rated on the US, in UK was a national treasure, the US always prefer a more poppy/easier artist, like madonna or something like that instead of something more elaborated like kates records, and their evolution, maybe "hounds of love" shows the best of both words, catchy songs, but with the music exploration that kate seached since "never for ever" (the records B side was a conceptual work for example) if the stranger things helps for a younger generation to know and reach the bush body of work, will be great, but kates work its always there, and there will be ...
2:25 Kate Bush is the rare kind of artist that is so gifted with phenomenal talent, insight, grace, poise, beauty and emotional intelligence at such a young age, that she left people awe struck when she first debuted. Many famous British recording artists including David Gilmour and Elton John were amazed that someone so young possessed the ability to write songs like: "Wuthering Heights" and "The Man With The Child In His Eyes." As a young fan of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal in the early 1980's, I still found myself loving every Kate Bush video that appeared on music television. Kate's music is operatic and classically influenced, but countless Rock musicians adore her, including the members of Def Leppard to name but one. Kate Bush is a true original. There's no one like her.
WISH we could ALL just call the song what Kate Bush herself calls it, it's _original_ title, the one radio stations in the 80's refused to call it, if you know, than you know it.... 'A Deal with God'. THAT rolls off the tongue better & was _her_ desired title for this song.
@Ghost Mail. It doesn’t matter how people get introduced to Kate, it’s just great that they do. I’ve been a fan since day one (1978) but I love it when younger people discover her.
She actually chose to change the title herself because she didn't want it to sound too religious. It's the correct title. The name she chose to release the song under. Songwriters usually go through various different titles for songs before they decide on the one they're happy with. The earlier ideas for the name aren't the 'right' name. They're the discarded names. It's fine if you want to refer to songs by such , names, though people may not know what you're talking about, but having a go at people because THEY don't use your favourite discarded name, is a bit silly, tbh... :)
The record company was afraid that the single would be boycotted if some people felt that the title had a religious undertone. Kate agreed to make this compromise, which is something she rarely does. I take it as a sign that she didn't feel super slighted about this.
@ghost mall Well, consider this - in 1985, I was a fifteen y.o. living in Canada, which means I'd never had a chance of hearing anything from Kate Bush, even though she had already released four albums at that point. Then someone turned on the radio and this song - "Running up that hill" - came out of nowhere, sounding like it was from another world. I became a fan from that day on. According to your statement, this implies that I had just hopped on (in this case, because of the release of the "Hounds of Love" album) and that I'm not a true fan. I don't think it works that way. We all hop on the wagon at some point or another...
I'm also a huge XTC fan and they released the single, "Dear God" in 1986, about year after Hounds of Love was released. As you might imagine, the stations here in the US that would even play it and other stations all over the world received bomb threats, death threats for playing that song, it professes Andy Partridge's non-faith that God even exists. I'm a Christian and I find it ridiculous that artists, particularly these two favorites, Kate and XTC, had to worry about not being played, death threats and other ridiculous limitations, merely for mentioning God in their work or questioning his existence. Interesting that that this persecution and censorship came from supposedly loving, tolerant Christians. Reminds me of death threats and persecution from other supposed "religions of peace" against even mentioning or creating images of their god. People are so easily misled and formulate their idiotic and ridiculous forms of fanaticism through ignorance, prejudice and insecurity. Kate may have regrets over not calling the song its original title but in that era, in her position, she made the right call. Perhaps not artistically, but from a pragmatic and practical sense, calling "Running Up That Hill - (subscript - A Deal With God) was likely the right call.
kate is a true individual artist that made musical art for the sake of its meaning and its sound not fame of publicity, that just came as a result of her incredible talent. this type of artist is lretty much extinct now.without her we would not have alot of the music we have today
She’s a true artist her lyrics her music the very first music video I ever saw and heard about the only albums I’ve ever bought this woman is truly a musical artist
Bush has a way of pulling breathtaking tunes out of nowhere every time, an unequalled set of vocal cords, and enough imagination that every album is subtly different from every other. It’s about time there was a Bush revival. She makes everyone else in the field look second-rate.
Kate Bush's dad was our family doctor in south east London. Nice man. He must have been very proud of his daughter. First saw the 'Running Up That Hill' video, with Donald Sutherland as her co-star back in the 80's. Remember it was shown when I went to watch Highlander.
Kate is one of those wonderful and slightly weird - but in a good way - people who come along from time to time and are totally unique. Appreciate them.
Who fact checks these things? David Gilmour did not first hear Kate's music when her brother John invited him to the Bush home. David was given Kate's home demos by a mutual friend John Hopper and then asked to meet her.
Kate Bush was my neighbour, shes a very keen jogger, every morning you would see her running up that hill, she seemed a bit unstable at the top, maybe vertigo causing her wuthering heights.
Pretty awesome knowing the inside story that Dave Gilmour discovered her. Interesting how Dave brought her demo tape to Abbey Road and helped her get a contract
So glad all of the young'uns are getting exposed to the wonder and magic that is Kate Bush through Stranger Things. It's funny, so many artists have actually charted with covers and or samples of "Running Up That Hill" over the past decade or two, yet the song charts again in 2022 from a TV series. A percentage of those kids who heard her on ST will actually buy one of her albums and listen to it. A smaller percentage will then buy that second, then third album. A smaller percentage will become obsessed with her artistic vision as tens of millions around the world have become and will then be Kate Bush fanatics for life. Welcome.
@@janewright2800 I just caught an episode (Yemen Party S3E5) of The Cleveland Show, a show I actually worked on a bit back when it was in production, and the writers had Junior (Kevin Michael Richardson) actually sing two verses of "This Woman's Work" in his beautiful falsetto, hilarious and touching when you see it in context. It surprised the hell out of me as I watched, it cracked me up. Kevin, when you meet him in real life, looks like an NFL linebacker, knowing he tenderly sung this tickles me.
I think most people enjoy artists and over the years get to know a little if not more of them. This video told me a lot more of Kate Bush that I never knew. 📯 My favourite is ........ well, Running up that Hill.
Wow. I am not really a part of normal society, anymore. I had NO IDEA Kate had been commercially productive. The fact that I am only discovering this now, says everything. True artists need only to create. Attention is where the money is, but the art is in the quiet moments.
I'm shocked she loved Prince. All of her albums...even the early ones were dominated by an almost obsessiveness for perfection. Prince's early albums sounded like, "Oh well, that's good enough." Except for his singles. Kate was a studio wizard and she explored. I can certainly understand Peter Gabriel etc. as influences. Anyway, I loved her B sided as much as her albums. Her mysteriousness and her thrushing vocals that entranced listeners held onto and expanded her childhood and adult dreams and touched all of us who took the time to listen to her. Her videos-yes another whose timing with the media was heaven sent-put a stamp on her personality like no other. And touches any of today's youth who are fortunate enough to come across her work.
Kate Bush is ineffable and untouchable, even through accurate historical accounting and this form of commentary. The 'background music' in this video is distracting, unnecessary and super-annoying. It detracts from the purity of the subject and the subject matter.
The first videos and music came out.........................this was a revelation and an operatic voice singing rock and roll! Creative and individual, and very emotional music.
I had a big crush on Kate in the early 1980s...and she ended up moving to a house two miles away from me! Don't worry, Kate, I'm not a stalker (happily married).
