Usually, when something is good, there's also a not-so-good side to it. That's true even for having so much information right at our fingertips 🤯. Watch the video and let me know what you think in the comments below! 👇

Good points. In our hurry to move forward, we may have actually regressed in some areas.

In times I've taken off of social media--and being online in general--I've had the most personally engaging, enriching, and exciting ideas come to mind that's in-tune with my expression in meaningful ways. I think the internet, both a blessing and a curse, has devalued the importance of developing in mental privacy. Everyone has a desire to share every step of the process and journey out of fear of algorithms throwing them into the wayside, but that goes against the very spirit and soul of an artist I think. It requires a lot of interpersonal work, and I'd argue a rudimentary level of spirituality. We need time to process our observations and experiences, to ruminate and let thoughts seep until they become our creative compasses and greatest sources of wisdom. I'm grateful there are artists like you discussing these topics for younger creators. As someone who grew up with the internet, it took a lot of deliberate practice detangling habits and forms of thought that did me more harm than good. I'm still working through it now, but I aim to improve on it every day.

Experiencing is key to value. So many creators never look up from their screens or leave their chair or desk. Thank you👍🏽👏🏾❣️💯

Imagine the purity of intention of those of times since passed; the low interference of attention, how they had nothing more interesting to them than what all they have constructed

The question is sort of resolving itself as information gets lost into the sea of generated garbage and corrupted search engines only providing results that are marketable. We are headed to a direction where you can't tell if something you see online is even real, how can you reliably reference that. Which sources are actually trustworthy, that's the new type of knowledge to keep hold onto tightly.

Hi Bobby. Thanks for another thought provoking video. My belief is that any type of learning comes down to discernment and not just blindly following whatever is tossed in front of us. The internet, while valuable, has also become a pit to lose time rather than diligently working for the end goal, using it as a tool. Sketching "with" you & Kei during the 90 Mac (I used a pencil and paper..!), meant I was working WITH my personal mentors, sharing the same moment in time, drawing the same subjects. I am so grateful for every video, every word of encouragement you have shared over the years. I am honoured to learn from you.

Knowing the history of our acquired knowledge - the major turning points in what we assumed and what we valued as artists - is part of what makes it so fascinating. I believe learning more about how we artists acquired the various tools and insights we use (Like what Bobby mentioned with the Walt Stanchfield notes) allows us to value what we learn a tad more.

Thanks for this video. This summer, I was told that I should do more than just learn stuff. To also apply it by drawing more from life. Living in Montreal, I got into subway sketching too and the areas of improvement you mentioned also started to come up on my side. People should do more outside sketching during their free time. It's the best thing to do

Thanks Bobby your a good role model. Although I think a lot of videos similar to this tend to assume that the people who watch it don't already have a handle on these things, catering towards the beginner. Interviews were good because it covered the whole spectrum. Currently a subscriber of Schoolism and will most likely renew. Thanks for all you do.

Interesting video, Bobby. As I am a part of your generation, I wonder sometimes how kids deal with the information bombardment of today. As far as learning… I love Schoolism. I was one of the original Kikstarter supporters and I get my annual subscription even when I do not have as much time for learning. I also love the Webinars, which I’ve been getting to more than the actual lessons. What I am finding difficult lately is that I am a learning addict. I always want to know more and learn more. It would be lovely if I can be paid to just do that for the rest of my life. 😂 The trouble is that with all the time I’m spending on learning, I am not doing. I would often find myself wishing I had all this information when I was in school and had way more time to practice what I’m trying to absorb. Now, I listen to lessons, but rarely have the time to do the assignments. Instead I try to apply what I’ve learned as I’m working. I also try to ignore all the “helpful” information bombarding me over SM and emails, but sometimes a topic is too interesting and instead of getting some rest, I spend another hour staring at screens and writing comments that may end up disappearing into the void. 😉

I think the same thing applies to music. There's always tons of new music coming out, but the greatest records still have things to discover and learn from decades later. Really savor art for longer, you'll get a long term advantage in a rapid consumerist society.

We lose the fun when it becomes effortless. When we are exposed to something new, it piques our interest as we lack the knowledge about it, so we keenly learn about why, how and what. Once we learn about it, we would never always feel that interesting because it is not new anymore as we experienced it before.
