Urine was a very precious commodity for the ancient Romans. So precious, in fact, that several emperors, including Nero and Vespasian, placed a tax on urine. In this video, you will learn about the legacy of one of these emperors, who gave his name to public urinals in some parts of the modern world.

How did that work? Who was taxed? The person pissing? Presumably, the bathrooms were government buildings, so the government taxed itself? And if the bathrooms were privately owned and they had this commodity urine, why didn't they sell it? You left more questions than you answered.

Really good questions! I wish latintutorial would do a "full version" covering such details. (by the way, your comment comes off a tiny bit hostile)

@@loricat5606 It should be somewhat hostile - LT has an annoying habit of driving by, throwing out some contestable historical tidbits, and then driving off and never coming back with a full explanation or even an attempt to answer questions in the comments. It's annoying AF quite frankly, and one reason why I have unsubscribed from his channel.

Isn't there value in arousing the viewer's curiosity? He's simply opened up an avenue for further exploration. (And the 60-second length is great for sharing fun facts with my Latin class! Some may be interested in learning more, some may not.)

@@latintutorial That is very peculiar. Thank you so much. Absolutely love your videos. I became a huge roman fanboy after listening to Mike Duncan's History of Rome twice. This made me want to learn latin itself. You make this new found dream possible, so thank you.

So does the word "Toilet" derive from the Latin, "to stink"?

Is this why people say taking the piss?
@loricat5606
@loricat5606 Год назад
I'm gonna look that one up! Good question. Back from researching: yes, that seems to be the case. because it was valuable for resources, people did in fact steal urine. A related phrase referring it is "piss poor".
