The USL Could TAKE OVER the MLS 🤯🇺🇸

The USL is trying to compete with the MLS' popularity by adding a promotion and relegation system that could be implemented in 2025. USL thinks with the arrival of Messi to the MLS, the USL could go down under, but with the addition of promotion and relegation, they could stay afloat.

The USL is the “people’s league”. DCFC supporters would not support an MLS team in Detroit. We draw 7,000+ per match and are building a new, soccer-specific stadium to accommodate the growth of the club. MLS is too corporate and will never capture the magic of USL.

Strongkickman I agree with you. The USL will succeed because the MSL is just a retirement league for sunsetting European footballers. Americans want our men's soccer to be exciting with American stars like the ladies soccer. The females are household names. And what better way to make American male soccer a household item than to create narratives around hometown players on the rise in America. The only American male player that I know of is Christian Pulisic. And where is he? Male athletes who could dominate American soccer are allergic to that loser male sports that won't pay to keep talented players on American soil. Can you imagine the greatest baseball, football or basketball player being poached by Europe, Asia or South America? Poached in their prime? Because the American pro leagues are delusional and believe they can do without them? MLS is a joke to most Americans. I say more power to the USL and it's Pro/Rel aspirations. I hope the have the pocketbooks to cover the popularity and arms race that will follow. It would be a shame if they succeeded only for the MLS to play copycat and outspend them out of spite. No, actually that would be a good thing for America.

At what point could you see MLS owners start to defect and join USL? - my guess is it would be very difficult to pursue that route without incurring a total loss of their investment; however, USL might gain so much leverage over MLS that the MLS landlords might have no other option than to join a system that is bigger than their collective selves. I think this is why MLS is actively squashing certain USL markets like Indy Eleven or SD Loyal and withdrawing from the US Open cup (what MLS doesn't quite realize yet is they are starting to dig their own grave by doing so)
@moisesmaciel5123

The promotion and relegation system destroys the financial structures of a sport. Just look at how the other American leagues are very sustainable, while the European ones are living in a bubble that could burst at any moment. If MLS better adapts a Draft system, like the leagues of other sports in the US, it will be the best soccer league in the world, delivering the maximum amount of entertainment and sportsmanship.

This is true for all the major markets. A few years ago I went to a game against the Tampa Bay Rowdies which I thought was cool but the stadium was 10% full. It’s a good sign for soccer in the USA none the less BUT, I think relegation etc is an overrated part of soccer leagues! Typically the top dogs with the big banks remain the top dogs and the small fries at the bottom remain the small fries! The top is usually the same revolving door of winners and the bottom is the same revolving door of losers. MONEY buys success in soccer leagues like these! Especially a league with no salary cap! MLS salary cap keeps the competition the standard which is why NBA, NFL are so successful, every team has a legitimate chance to win over time! Yes there is the Messi exception but that an EXCEPTION! A marketing exception! I welcome either league because I won’t complain about more soccer but if I wanted to own a team, I’d choose an MLS team over a USL team! I PERSONALLY prefer the FORCED stability and structure over time! Less chances to fail and fall flat as an owner.

Unfortunately as much as I would love Pro/Rel in our soccer, I don't think that would be enough to overtake MLS. It would be exciting to see if that did happen though, perhaps if it immediately does start gaining traction then it will persuade MLS to join USL to form a heirarchy going from MLS-USL-USL 1-USL 2, etc., in a similar fashion to the Premier League and EFL doing Pro/Rel between each other. I mean, just imagine, smaller teams climbing up from USL or USL 1 and winning the MLS in a Leicester-esque miracle story. Now that would be exciting.

A-League (Australia) doesn’t have promotion/relegation either - there’s plans for a second division but I can’t see it starting in the next five years

Promotion and relegation is not good for business in the US.

It should cuz the US is a massive country. There could be a football league for every state of the US similar to the 7th division of England.

@NanobanaKinako Not just every state. Many more cities. A rising pro soccer team could put many suburbs and smaller town on the map. And the fan bases and their pocketbooks would be welcome when the teams are promoted and must play in the bigger city soccer stadiums.

@@RealBlockbityes. People only become fans of major teams because there is no other choice. I’d much rather support the team I can drive 15 minutes to watch every Sunday than 2/3 hours once every couple of months, even if it’s low level, because of the hope of promotion.

they just wouldn't ever generate enough money to compete, you really wouldn't have much of a difference than you do now. I don't think Europeans understand how big the drop off is in population size between cities in the US with major cities, let alone major cities in state when compared to their smaller counterparts and how drastically that affects the economy. No to mention how far apart these populace centers are to one another relative to European ones even in their own states. It isn't like we don't have minor professional leagues for NA sports we do there just is no pro/rel due to the logistics and finances and their relative niche appeal. It just doesn't make sense. The Hershey Bears are a great example of this. Super famous AHL team from PA but their market would NEVER be big enough to be a viable NHL market. This is no different for smaller USL teams. Smaller markets area also historically dominated by college sports in the US, so there isn't really much demand for a professional level replacement. A great example is how Louisville is a MASSIVE basketball market in the US and Kentucky is a basketball POWERHOUSE on the collegiate level, but due to just HOW popular college basketball is in the state the NBA has never placed a team there in fears of not being able to compete in the market. So on the whole there is just MANY factors as to why a european style system just doesn't culturally jive with the US, at least for the time being. I do think that could change, especially if the USL continues to grow financially and if soccer were to become more dominant culturally etc., but really that is more of a time thing and I don't think you are going to see changes any time soon. Part of why MLS is structured the way it is is the stability it provides in a NA economic ecosystem, it is why most major sports leagues in the US are designed that way. @@NanobanaKinako
