I agree your fine wearing it Luke, I just picked one up myself this weekend and it doesn't the insigna on the hat, but it is a desert camo like your's. Having wanting one of these myself, I am a fan of the hat and how it feels and wears! I too have both family members serve in the military themselves and heard some fine stories about these hats! Awesome review my friend.
I have and use lots of surplus gear as you do. For me i personally will not wear any of the usmc logo cause i did not earn it. Thats just my conscience. To get around that i bought the propper woodland digital set. Its pretty much the same but without the logo.
when I was younger and my uncle would send me all kinds of MC apparel boonie ' shirts and abunch of other items I cant mention , I'd wear it with no worries .I bought a USMC boonie for the work around the house , I live in Texas so sun Protection is a must , anyway it came in and and its awesome but when I tried it wasn't the same I became self conscious about ppl thinking I was in the corp , I was gonna cut the embrodering out but thought it was disrespectful , So I guess my uncle is getting a new boonie
I have both of them hats but always wear the green digi camo one, great for outdoors while camping in the woods,I agree with you 100%,I totally enjoy watching your channel.
If you go to USMC museum in Quantico ,VA they have many hats with the insignia . I bought a baseball style cap with USMC . I wear it and have people ask if I was a Marine. I always inform them that I was never a marine and bought the hat to support the USMC at Quantico. We have a right as a American to show our loyalty to this great nation.
I will say one thing the eagle globe and anchor is not just a emblem it is and always had been something that is earned, and for those that have not done so I don't knock but I do always ask is that your emblem, just something we as Marines do. 1863 if I remember right the emblem in it's current form was adopted, and each and every Marine has earned the right to wear it. good video, though just food for thought
Well said brother. In my mind, I couldn't imagine anyone claiming to be a Marine when they aren't one but I'm sure it happens. People and their stupidity never ceases to amaze me. Let me say thank you for all that you do brother. Be safe and take care. Thanks again.
hello. I am a Marine and I would like to tell you that they are both MARPAT. stands for Marine Patented. now the green is called woodland and the tan is desert. camouflage utility uniform. if you respect the Marine Corps you wont call them hats anymore. the proper term is cover, as it covers your head. thank you for your support.
I'm in the Marines and my dad wears my woodlands boonie cover all the time since we live on a farm. I just tell him not to impersonate as a Marine, and if someone gives him shit, then tell them that his son's in the Marines. Nothing wrong with showing pride for the Marine Corps because not everyone is cut out for it, Semper Fi!
@@angryagain68 When I see someone wearing it, I assume they're a Marine and I Should be able to assume that, because no one else has a right to wear the eagle, globe and anchor, the USMC or the word Marine. But it serves another purpose for a Marine. When a Marine wears it, he doesn't have to salute Officers of any branch and that's only for Marines. Aside from the ability to attach vegetation to aid breaking up the sillouette, it's the best reason for wearing it.
@@angryagain68 Yes I do know what they say about...That's why I further explained why we have a Right to "assume" in this particular instance. If you didn't earn the EGA, don't wear it. Your point was moot, therefore irrelevant.
@@asleepinthealley Straw dog argument bud. That wasn't even what we were referring to in the first place. We are talking about the boonie hat and who fielded it first. Not the Marine Insignia. So, you're bringing up an issue that isn't even part of the discussion and is therefore completely irrelevant, and of no interest to any one else in the discussion but you.
I got a TRU-SPEC BOONIE. I never heard of the company before, but I got the hat out of an army surplus store for fifteen dollars, and have used it for a lot of outdoor work like bushwhacking and clearing farm land. It's cool and comfortable, and I like to think its stylish. I feel it has a simple yet durable design, and I'll get my money's worth in use.
I am a US Marine and personally I don’t take issue with you wearing the emblem. I’ve watched your channel for years and you are an honest, upright person who gives honest gear reviews and I appreciate your work. It just needs to be stated for the record though that the Marine Corps emblem or affectionately referred to as the EGA (Eagle, globe and anchor) is sacred for Marines. It is earned and never given at MCRD San Diego, Parris Island or Quanico, Va for Officers. It is earned through a lot of blood, sweat and tears and for this reason Marines don’t like it when non Marines may wear it. There are some exceptions. Similar to the Trident worn by the Navy Seals. The emblem is reserved for only those who have stood on the yellow foot prints and graduated as United States Marines. Semper Fi!
I don't wear any military items with name tapes, Branch tapes, insignias, rank tabs, ribbons, medals or any such thing along those lines. However, I am a camo junkie and have several patterns from different branches. God bless our men and women in uniform!
Mate, well done for making such good videos. We love your presentations over here in “Blighty”. Don’t be offended by the bigots, all you are doing is sharing awareness for the brothers that are serving. Great work my friend.
Hi Luke, I agree my uncle was a gunnery Sargent in the USMC in Vietnam he did two tours and I remember him when I was young giving me a boonie and said where it with pride. Don't know what that guy was going on about, maybe PTSD, I do know that organizations like the British Royal Marines earn their green brets maybe he was thinking along those lines. Kind Regards Andrew
I used to wear a boonie hat while on the trail, however I perspire profusely and the sweat would run down my face and get on my glasses which in turn collected dirt. I have since started wearing a shemagh, works the same but is cooler if worn correctly.
I love my Boonie Hat, and have a few. My favorite is one which has a full face fly veil hidden in the zipped crown of the hat. The chin strap has saved me from losing my hat several times in strong winds. The full brim stops your ears burning and its my pick of all hats now. During rain however, the hat will turn into a floppy mess, do you have any tips for stiffening the brim ?
My dad is a former marine and he does not allow me to purchase USMC covers & uniforms that are standard issue. He would however let me buy such a cover IF it has no EGA on the front. So that's what I'll do. Can't win em all.
+Francisco Franco No such thing as a "former" Marine. Once You are a Marine, you are a Marine for life. Betcha your dad will agree with that statement . LOL
"For the Land of the Free And The Home........Of The.........Easy offended get over your self absorbed ass":Seriously tho I have seen children get yelled at by retired or active duty army military marine corps or back from deployment just brutal shit come on man there kids. There just trying to be like there heroes showing there support for there favorite team.
I don't see ant problem wearing the hat as along as you ware it with PRIDE AND RESPECT!!! It's made in the USA so support this great country and buy American made products.
I think there are some laws against wearing a full set of ACU when not on official duty. Wearing just a hat shouldn't be a problem. I have some Chinese PLA Type-07 ACUs that I sometimes wear when I am out. That was not a problem either.
DAMN SHOULDN'T BE MY TAXED DOLLARS GAVE THOSE FUCKS THERE UNIFORM IF EVERY INDIVIDUAL ARMY SOLDIER BOY COULD MAKE THERE OWN UNIFORM FROM THERE OWN MATERIALS THEY PURCHASED THEM SELFS WHAT A SITE THAT WOULD BE.
Dear Sir. Being a Marine myself, and talking to my brother Marines. We don't care who wears clothing with the Eagle, Globe and Anchor. Where we get pissed off is when someone claims to be a Marine, who was never in the Corps. Just be honest, and one should have no trouble. Marines acknowledge their own. Ttypically with a Semper Fi. Again just be honest, and don't try to bullshit US. PS love your program. MPM USMC
It is not illegal to wear it. It is not stolen Valor. Its just part of a uniform and just a hat does not make it a complete uniform with insignia and rank structure pinned to it. It's just a hat that was designed for a purpose and I don't see an issue with it and I served 10 yrs.
What manufacturer makes the army version of these hats? I’ve had relatives in nearly all branches of the military. I’m interested in the quality of the hat. I’m not looking for a hassle.
Hey,I was a career marine. I dont care about the wearing of the hat, but you need to understand the E.G.A is sacred to us, we earn it by blood sweat and tears. While it isnt a medal it represents our bond to each other, and trust me, earning it is no joke. That being said, some guys will definitely take offense at someone wearing it.
It's interesting to see the different views from Marines and civilians like myself. As for keeping rain out of the eyes, they certainly DO a great job at this task and I have used mine many times for that purpose. Be well folks.
how do you spell the manufacturer sicory? give us a freezefame close up of label. haven't had a pair since time in service. need one. never used ebay, but maybe include url to ebay store.
Purchasing these from army surplus is not only helping the US economy with jobs and taxes from surplus stores and staff but also the money is going back into the US military from these types of surplus purchases I personally don't see anything wrong with it
I agree. It's not about the hat, it's just a piece of gear and it really shouldn't bother anyone. It's presenting yourself as something that you're not, then it's a problem. But we shouldn't blame it on the hat. ;)
As a former Marine I have no problem with civilians wearing clothing with the EG&A on it. The problem comes when they wear a pice of Uniform bearing that or any other and “claime” they were in that branch. All of my brothers and sisters Earned their titles. I ask that people respect that. If not, don’t be surprised if you catch a Beat Down. Semper Fi 🇺🇸
Yup whenever I was 10 ish I was given my uncles usmc garrison woodland cap and I saw a digicam cover digital camo and wondered wtf is this later I went to an antique shop in Vero beach and I saw regular camo on an army issue cap btw in a ww2 section so after about a day I was puzzled and I went on google to see the difference mar-pat marine-pattern
Recruits in bootcamp aren't even allowed to wear the eagle globe and anchor. They iron them on their cover when they graduate and become Marines. So you can see why Marines say you need to earn the right to wear it.
see the thing about the eagle globe and anchor isn't the fact that you're wearing it, because there are plenty of things you can buy at any store with the insignia on it. it's that you didn't earn it like the guy said and this is a standard issue uniform item. when you go to boot you're not allowed to wear anything at all with the insignia until you earn it. to just buy one online defeats the point. you did a great review and there are plenty of boonie covers out there that don't have that insignia that would do just as good of a job. there's a respect and pride that goes along with wearing one that you cannot appreciate as a civilian. It's a great review and I like your videos a lot. you should have stopped this review without ever talking about the insignia because everything you said about it comes off as disrespectful without mean to.
Thanks for commenting brother and thank you for the kind words too. As for being disrespectful, sorry but I will have to disagree with you on that. I've spoken to countless Marines about this topic (in person and on here) and I'm told that they agree with me 98 percent of the time. Very rarely do I come across and individual who finds it disrespectful. Ultimately it boils down to opinions. That's mine. That's yours. Hope you had a great Christmas. By the way if you're a Marine I would like to say thank you.
I see it as free advertising for the Corps so long as they are not trying to pass themselves off as Marines. What about the relatives that are given something by a Marine, there are far too many things in this world to worry about than someone simply wearing a boonie hat with an EGA on it. I see it as they take pride in our military, so just don't go out and do stupid crap with the EGA on your hat.
john snow I would not use the nfl as a comparison because none of them are willing to put their name on a blank check that may be payable with your life. I get where you come from, but they have the freedom to earn millions and have fans because men and women are willing to stand between our country and the enemy, which I see very few of them doing. Just my humble opinions.
i just finished your video. i will explain a little. Marines earn the right to wear the Marine uniform and that cover is part of the Marine Corps uniforms. as a Marine i don't have a problem with you wearing that cover but i think if you were to wear the full camouflage uniform than i might have a problem with that. Marines actually earn the right to wear the uniforms of the Marine Corps. that cover is part of our uniform but is not worn very often.
hey mr. Luke. i realized i was wrong. i understand you are showing pride in wearing our nations military clothing. after consideration i find that i was just following other bullies (ie veterans) who feel that only they have the right to wear uniform items. i love your videos
@@tboy221 so it's ok for me to wear the USMC boonie cover then? I totally understand with the whole wearing the uniform because it is earned and plus its illegal if I never joined the corps. But I would love to buy the hat and wear it proudly since I really wanted to join the corps but God had his plans for me!
Luke just put one of your OGR patches over the USMC globe and anchor and you are good to go. Also it used to be that the original MARPAT camo had the USMC symbol as part of the pattern. No one else could use that particular MARPAT but the contractors came up with a fake MARPAT that did not have the USMC logo embedded that they sold to the civilians. USN 1988-2008.
Milligan Thirteen I'm sure you have heard this before;....... "We stole the eagle from the Air Force, the anchor from the Navy, and the rope from the Army. On the 7th day when God rested we overran his perimeter and stole the globe, and we’ve been running the show ever since. We live like soldiers, talk like sailors, and slap the hell out of both of then at the same time. Fighter by day, lover by night, drunkard by choice, and a United States Marine by an act of God."
TheOutdoorGearReview When I was a sailor during a WestPac deployment, a Marine tried to hang himself with his belt because he couldn't take being out @ sea for 28 straight days.
If Jarheads get mad @ civillians for wearing the Marine Corps emblem saying that they didn't earn it, I can argue the same thing about the anchor for the Marine that tried to deep six himself. The point is that it is just a symbol. How a man acts while wearing that symbol is way more important than the who.
First of all genius, I never said that I have a problem with anyone wearing the boonie. I don't. All I said was that Marines are not soldiers. Now go away, you f'n gnat.
With all due respect sir, I'm not even an American. I'm a Croatian Army NCO and also a Croatian homeland war veteran with 5 years of war experience. So I can be anything, but not a poser. As for my hat, there's no emblem on it whatsoever. Although I respect you as a Marine, the only emblem I'm pride of is the one of my unit. No hard feelings.
I have never been in the marines but my has and served 2 years in Afghanistan and he gave me me a marine boonie hat that I wear everyday to honor him for the service ...let someone tell me I can't wear it..
Isn't it a stolen valor if you say you are in the Military but really not? My brother is a Marine and he got me and my little brother a cover, and is it disrespectful to wear the cover in public?
It is in no way disrespectful for you and your little brother to wear your Marine covers. If it were so, your Marine brother would not have given that head gear to you. Wear them with pride, Elijah and little brother, wear them with pride. S/SGT USMC '70-'78
Not disrespectful if it doesn't have rank or medals or a name tag or the american flag on the right shoulder Why do they get offended?you know what buy a chinese army cover and wear it out and tell me if there is a difference of wearing something american made vs chinese made I want to hear about the reaction do they get offended by it or try to shoot you on sight?
Great looking boonie hat. I've worn them on and of '69'. I find them functional, comfortable. It is the only hat I will wear. At this time I have over 8 and will definately add this one to my collection. I have never had any problems with service personal in fact I aquired 3 from buddies in the service. Thanks again for a great video.
Only problem I would have would be if you tried passing yourself off as a Marine. to me it is like you picked a team and decided to go with the mens team in picking the Marine Logo one.
I would say that if the civilian population is having the government take the well earned money they make from them to pay for the uniforms the military wears, then I say that civilians have just as much right to wear a hat with a logo on it that is from the military.
MY HARD EARNED TAXED DOLLARS GAVE YOU SELFISH FUCKS A UNIFORM YOU NEVER HAD TO EVEN PAY FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE.I PAID FOR AN ALL BLACK SUN HAT LOOKS A LITTLE TACTICAL.DON'T GIVE ME SHIT YOU NEVER EARNED IT YOU WERE JUST HANDED IT BY YOUR DRILL SARGENT BY MY HARD EARNED DOLLAR YOU FUCKS FUCKING BULL SHIT I SWEAR IF ANYONE GIVE ME SHIT I'MA THROW MY HARD EARNED TAX DOLLAR INTO IT.
Put the chin strap behind your head, postion down a bit, pull it tight, looking somewhat like a DI's campaign hat. It helps keep the hat centered and the wind blowing it of your head, especially if you are running. I use it that way more often then a chin strap.
This video is quite old but still. If someone is wearing a boonie hat or regular hat with a marine insignia or any branch than it should be seen as someone who likes and supports the military. Same with shirts or anything else. It's obviously very different if you are out walking around in public in a uniform and medals or anything official looking. That's stolen Valor obviously. I have army t-shirts. I have navy lanyards. I have all kinds of stuff with military branches insignia or names. I've never had anyone walk up and thank me for service or anything. 8f they ever did I would quickly tell them I haven't served but I support. I have had people ask if I was in the navy before because I have navy lanyards but nothing more.
@@bruteforce1996 i’m not a marine! Don’t wana stir up stolen valor problems w/ random veterans side balling me. 🤦♂️😆 beautiful boonie love that pattern and colors
Just tell them that you're not in the service. If they give you crap about it just say someone you know that's in gave it to you. What are they going to do if someone gave it to you?
Nice review luke! I really like how you are acting so well. There are lots of reviews out there with people who look at the ground a little and talk too soft. But you always seem to enjoy it! Awesome! And the fact that it is usmc issue.... Who gives a crap. It keeps the sun out of your face and protects you. Doesn't matter if a patch is on there. I personally thing it goes too far if you wear a full outfit with rank and name tapes and the whole thing. I sometimes wear usmc pants because they are cheap and tough. Anyways. Take care!!
Marines are forbidden to wear this cover when not in cammie's (uniform)... The Eagle Globe and Anchor are EARNED, not just handed out❗ That's no different than a Marine wearing an Seal 🔱 Trident. You have to earn that by passing BUDS. It's something no military personnel do. Not only is wearing a uniform boonie with civilian attire against regulations but wearing an insignia you didn't earn is frowned upon & just not done. If an Army soldier were to wear that cover around a Marine base, you can bet that would be a problem... Let's put it that way. It's NOT stolen valor wearing an EGA, but you didn't earn it, so don't wear it. It's not really but kinda like the military veteran imposters out there who put on uniform items to get free stuff or discounts at stores when they've never served... Don't get me wrong I don't believe that's what you're doing and I'm not upset one way or the other I'm just letting you know that that Marine that got all upset with you was probably not articulate enough to properly explain that even for a marine you would be out of regulation wearing that cover in civilian attire (civies)❗
Some folks say that if you didn't serve you have less right to have a political opinion. I agree with you about surpluss gear. I just ordered some true spec hats. The Daneal Boon in me sees their practicality. Daniel refused to serve in the revolution. I guess he was more worried about fighting ingans.
wearing such type of clothes as hats or MA-1 jackets or any other military ware feels, at least for me, like showing respect and honor to all who fought and fight for freedom. wearing those clothes demonstrates support for our society and our way of life!
The way i look at it is that as long as u are not disrespecting it then i dont see a problem butt if u are like throwing it and treating it like trash then there is a problem butt u are not doing that so there should be no problem anyway good review ill see if i can pick one up
DOING WHAT!?I HAVE A RIGHT TO THROW IT AROUND MY TAXED PAYCHECK OR DOLLARS GAVE YOUR SELFISH ASS WHO NEVER EVEN PAID FOR IT JUST SAID THEY EARNED IT.NO YOU WERE JUST HANDED IT BY YOUR DRILL INSTRUCTOR LITTLE BITCH!
Sorry man u had a great review going until u started about the EGA. Men and women have died in boot trying to earn that title. We lost two recruits and one SDI in 2005 when I was in boot. So for some it is just best left alone. But great vid otherwise.
