The USMNT Nations League Camp was a SUCCESS & DISAPPOINTMENT

The USMNT won the CONCACAF Nations League after defeating El Tri in the final, which means it was a success. However the win against Jamaica that required a ton of luck leads us to feel somewhat disappointed with the overall campaign.

The problem for Balogun (im an Arsenal fan, I saw some of his youth team games) is what I said when he chose the US, he's good in a counter attacking team like Reims who will play opposition that will play more open (because, with all due respect, who the hell are Reims), that's why he's finding it harder at Monaco, teams close up against Monaco, he's young, he hasn't really figured out low blocks yet, given time he might, and it'll be a massive benefit to you guys, he does have potential but isn't the finished article by any means, in CONCACAF you guys play a lot of teams that will play a low block, that's why Balogun struggles, if he figures out low blocks he could be lethal, give him time

@samhedges3890 I agree, England weren't going to, I know he was a U21 but here in England that doesn't mean too much, sure some will develop and become stars e.g Phil Foden but many don't e.g Shola Ameobi, he wasn't going to get in the senior squad anytime soon, im actually glad he went to the US, like you said they'll be patient with him

Honestly, what is this narrative that we were poor against Jamaica? News flash, even though it’s CONCACAF, if a team doesn’t come out of its shape, it’s hard to breakdown. That’s the whole point of a parked bus…prime Barcelona couldn’t breakdown Mourniho’s inter…. When there’s no opening through the middle, you’re forced to rely on crosses, and moments of magic. On top of all that, everyone seems to forget: Pulisic didn’t even get a shot off on a 3 v 1, Tillman missed a sitter, Pepi had a (tough) volley that went straight at the keeper. If the first two, very clear cut chances go in, this isn’t even an issue. That said, Tac and Pete have their minds made up, which is part of the regular discourse in these circles. For me - Stock up: Sargent (Pepi, Haji and Balo all kinda sucked when given impactful minutes beyond Haji scoring on tired legs, Gio, Adams, Ream, and Dest Neutral - Puli, Wes (they were both good, but we already know they’re unstoppable), Weah, and Jedi Down - Richards, Musah, and LDLT

You and Pete talked about this a little on the live stream as well but I couldn’t agree more. Literally every other team in CONCACAF has figured out that if you low block and counter attack against this USMNT, you will have a decent shot at getting a result or at least making it really close. For as much of a footballing nation that Mexico is, it’s shocking that they haven’t tried this yet.
@celebrim1

Every team in soccer that is outmatched can maximize their chances of winning by playing a low block and hoping to get lucky on a counter. It's a very effective strategy in soccer because it's such a low scoring sport. Beating a low block is hard even for very good teams with a lot of offensive threats. Mexico doesn't do it because they refuse to admit that they aren't better than the USA. They'd probably happily do it against Brazil.

Interestingly, I’ve NOT heard anyone factor in the probable jet lag suffered by the players during the long trip just 3 days prior which led to a mostly lethargic performance… most just played last Sunday 3/17, and then flew over and played Jamaica 3 days later, and then mexco 3 days after that…

One take away I had and was disappointed with is GGGs need to only push the ball down the wing and the wing only he even said after the Jamaica game that we need to get the ball down the wings after a game that the only goals WE scored came through the middle. He needs to hold Jedi farther back and even Dest to help with the build-up they can bomb forward after we get up the field which will open space for the wings and help the midfield build out without having to move Gio back to the 6 and this also helps defensively on counters its such a simple solution I watched Argentina do exactly that against El Salvador and cut up the low block. I know we aren't Argentina but if they need the fullbacks to stay a little farther back to help build up so do we.

Also I know Ream is by far our best passing CB but I feel no matter who is playing Berhalter only wants one of the CBs to make actual passes in the Jamaica game without Ream, Miles always seemed to defer to Richards who is a better passer than Miles but didn't pass great why wouldn't either one do it, whoever has the pass or the lane to drive forward and pass

Showed our issues playing against a team putting 10 behind the ball and parking the bus. We were so stagnant and didn't know what to do vs Jamaica. That being said, it was great to see us playing so well in a final and not having the guys get nervous for the occasion after a poor showing the game prior.
@Phogadacbiet

Such a lazy argument. Newsflash, playing against a parked bus is hard. There’s a reason that strategy is employed at the top levels. Prime Barcelona couldn’t breakdown Mourinho’s Inter. Barca lost to Chelsea, headed by Roberto di Matteo because they parked the bus. Simeone’s Atletico are a top club because they are great on counters, and are very good at keeping a defensive shape of 8 in front of the ball. When you play with no space because they’re playing tight, you are going to struggle.

Imagined we played a 3-4-3. We could have three CB’s to sure up the back. Then Robinson and Dest can push forward but we don’t get caught. Then the three up top rotate and find pockets. It’s basically the system the Columbus Crew play. It would allow Pulisic to be a little bit more inside and it would really utilize Dest offensively.
@belluh-1huey102
@belluh-1huey102 2 месяца назад
What if we played with 3 CBs with Vickers, Richards, and one of the fullbacks tucking in, a midfield pivot of Adams and a inverted fullback in midfield or the CAM and wingers drops to let a fullback push down the wing, two CAMs in Reyna and Mckennie, two wingers in Weah and Pulisic, and a striker in Balogun or Pepi. Starts out as a 4 2 3 1, transforms into a 3 2 4 1 in attack and possession, and a 4 4 2 in defense.
@bmr209
@bmr209 2 месяца назад
Not sure that adding another player from our weakest position group and taking off one from our strongest position group is the best idea. Our CBs aren’t really ball playing defenders other than Ream and it might lead to stagnating buildup and to the midfield being overrun. Plus I would like to have Reyna centrally and it would be hard to play him there in that formation
@celebrim1
@celebrim1 2 месяца назад
We don't have three CB's we'd want to play. It's questionable we even have two. And yeah, I love Wilfried Nansy but he's more of a system coach than Berhalter and he has the advantage of managing one of the highest spending teams in the league and so can get the pieces he wants that can out technical most any team in the league (at the cost of being very much not a physical team). When Berhalter was managing the Crew they were one of the lowest spending teams in the league, and to deal with that he was continually rolling out different looks and tactical adjustments. In fact, for the first year or so most of the criticism against Gregg was that all the tactical adjustments he'd like to make were better suited to a club coach and had no place in international soccer where you needed to keep the system simple. Then somehow that was forgotten and people started complaining that his system was too simple. Now I've even heard people complaining that what we need is a coach that will bunker and counter and play more direct soccer. I have a feeling those are the same people who complained that we'd never reach the next level bunkering and countering and playing direct soccer.
@belluh-1huey102
@belluh-1huey102 2 месяца назад
@bmr209 we got three ball playing Center backs in Vickers, Ream, and sometimes Richards. Dest or Robinson can play as centerbacks or invert into midfield. Gio is staying up and Mckennie can drop into the pivot to allow a winger into cam position to allow a wingback to push up. We've been doing this already but with more rushed long balls instead of organized and controlled link up plays.

@celebrim1 I think complaints towards Greg come from the fact that the players in the squad evolved to play more European and possession style of play. Doing passes, ball carrying, but not crazy South American dribbling, and linking up with teammates through movement and short passes.

You guys are right, Pulisic, at his finest, makes those around him better and chooses the correct times to go it alone.....He is a team player with B + capability of individual brilliance. Much like Michael Bradley he is responsible for offerings to his teammatesin front of him at all times, even times where he gets out of the way sensing that others are stepping up. Gio is truly unbelievable, however. He is the guy to build this team around...and Pulisic .. . The midfield MUSt be built around Gio withdrawn and Pulisic in front of him. Gio, at his best has all the abilities of Pulisic to attack like a barracuda plus all of his Dad's calmness, patience and awareness and passing genius when distributing from a withdrawn center midfield roll ....add in his flash striking capability like Donovan and currently like Christian and you have a world-class midfield duo. Gio strikes the ball like a Tab Ramos or Dempsey and within a year his free kick ability will be amazing fans ..His athleticism is spectacular. He is still growing into himself . His talent is m sublime and rare . I would for now get a Morris type in to play with back to goal and just yank the D out of its shape and play a decoy so our midfield can go all Blitzkrieg. .. but eventually Haji. and Josh Sargant will end up getting it done I think, (I still like Ricardo Pepi also) and they will create a complex new dynamic... Thankfully, we have enough depth now that our threats lurk everywhere. Now we need to solidify roster spots, get a depth chart and start letting set groups of players develop together....Go at it like a hockey team, but watch for who clicks and get them on the pitch at the same time. Crucially, however, now is the time to get 20 guys to stick with. We need to build identity ! Leave 4 spots for the stars to come out of the Olympics and a prodigy from the U- 20 team . Start gelling now! Our happy problem now is that much like AM/PM we just have too much good stuff! Get used to Berhalter. After that last trophy was lifted it became too late to change him out. I like his work at shifting our lads' inner dialogue and seeing this generation of Americans as worldbeaters setting the new standard for USMNT ....he will do ok .. I would like to speak with you guys ..I am a former U 18 National Team player who played with Claudio and Harkes and A good and Meola at Virginia. I love your show and would love to guest with you guys some time. Gregg highly rates Tyler's leadership/intangibles over whatever advantages Johnny provides at DM, to call him up after missing a year of injury and giving him significant minutes. Tillman seems shy/timid on and off the field and lacks that swagger needed to excel at the national team. Johnny/Tillman's growing up outside the USA, cultural differences, and less time with the core group don't make them natural leaders or faces of US soccer like Adams/Gio/Pulisic/Ream.

Success that we won, disappointing that it took a lucky bounce at the death to get past a weakened Jamaica. I'll rate it a 6.5. There were quite a few bright spots. The fact that Gio (again) made it clear what he brings that no one else can is a big positive. It's crazy how many people forgot Nations League last year in the lead up to this camp. They forgot how he waltzed through the Mexican team last year. If his stock isn't up with someone, then it's because they're a broken-brained hater. Stock down? Miles was clearly in over his head. His stock was not great for me before, so we'll just call that confirmation. Scally probably stock down, but he's nowhere near losing his spot. The issue is that he's a good stay-at-home RB, but Gregg's System demands that he play the same way as Dest. They are not the same player. It's the same issue as always. Gregg can't adjust. Dest was unavailable, but he can't adjust to the available personnel.

I can't agree with your takes on Johnny. TA was by far our MVP in the world cup, but he and JC need to be splitting time situationally. JC is so much better in the on the ball than Tyler that it's not funny, he's just not flashy like Musah or manically chasing every single thing like TA. JC is underrated defensively because you're comparing his style with TA's. JC has less tackles and ground covered that TA but he has interceptions, aerial duels, blocks, etc. His positioning and marking are really good. Look at the goals we conceded in the world cup- TA is outside the D with nobody to mark. Look at the positions JC takes up defensively for Betis and USMNT- in an attacker's shorts, blocking, clearing. You are overstating TA's impact in this camp because of one brilliant moment. In Pete/Tac's post-game (mex) stream you said out loud "Tyler didn't have a good game until the goal" and "we created nothing in the first half". The council stream you all said "there was nothing offensively in the first half" because Gio was dropping and Wes was high up the field. JC allows Gio to play higher because he can actually receive the ball in tight spaces, and turn and pass. All of TA's passes were backwards or long switches. Johnny plays progressive passes- the CBs don't even bother giving TA the ball, but they'll give it to JC. Now, I agree JC missed a couple passes and had a giveaway or two. I'll agree he needs to prove it more with USMNT. He still needed better ball security. But have you been watching him in Spain? He is so good on the ball, those fifteen minutes of missed passes is ALL you have to complain about with Johnny. I love TA, he's a leader in the squad, he should be our captain when he's on the field, and we will need him in a lot of games. But JC is my starter and TA replaces him in some situations, not the other way around.

I get the feeling Berhalter moved Gio back in the final to give him a chance to prove that he can work hard for the team and defend. People always say that Gio is lazy and can't play defensively, but he proved them wrong and scored the winning goal on top of that. The players say they like Berhalter because he challenges them and helps them progress in their careers, so that would make sense if he did it to help Gio in his club situation.

Well, he scored the solidifying goal, but yet your points still stand.

Few players say they like Berhalter. The ones that do, do so because if they say otherwise they will be gone. Also bashing your coach publicly as a player is a bad look, even if it is justified

I swear facts don't matter to a lot of people here especially the charrascaria God. Jamaica was missing 6 starters dude. Antonio, Demarai Gray,Leon Bailey, Ethan Pinnock , omari Bell. USMNT got an own ( Jamaican goal ) in suspect reamining seconds.. It could have been a freaking slaughter. Next times buddies. Next time 🇯🇲 Anyway, the US still have the best team in Concacaf, for now

Adam once again not understanding soccer and defaming Sebastian Lletget who was playing against bunkering opponents. Adam claims Lletget couldn't do anything against opponents so the defense could focus on Pulisic. When Lletget played against Panama, he was double-marked. Panama used a line of four midfielders, and the U.S. used three midfielders. So, Panama had their left midfielder and left center midfielder double teaming Lletget (with their forwards double teaming our DM), and Adam expected Lletget to be able to dribble through a sea of Panamanian defenders and play a final ball. The changes he called for were Musah to replace Lletget, and when Adams, Musah, & McKennie played together, they couldn't create any scoring chances through the middle. This group of supposed USMNT fans target players for criticism, and they just find things to criticize about them without doing the same thing to other players they want playing. So, Musah and McKennie create zero scoring opportunities when they play, but Lletget is supposed to dribble through a low block of 10 bunkering players.

Strikers need service, our current wingers aren't great and Gio has to play the number 6 because Adams can't pass forward.

I know NO ONE and i mean NO ONE will agree with me, but hear me out: Jesus Ferreira. When we play against teams with low blocks, there are too many people on the defenses back line. WHen that happens the 9 is not affective. So having Jesus in there who will drop back will creat more space for Pulisic to cut in.
