I share your headache lol but there's an intense satisfaction to all the pieces that didn't QUITE click in every version of the story, suddenly snapping into place.
Saw it 4 times in theatres including being able to take my Dad to it right before he died. Must have rented it on VHS to show friends about 18 times when it came out. As a musician and editor myself, what John Ottman did composing the music and editing the film, is technically and artistically incredible.
Tiny clues at the beginning that are easy to miss. The first shot we see of "Keyser" at the dock is of his feet, walking normally. Then the first shot we see of Verbal is also of his feet, limping. Almost as if to subliminally say, "See, Verbal CAN'T be Keyser!"...because he is, of course
@@kevinwassledah1153 i think they initially tried to be serious during the lineup scene. Then they all just improved and Benicio just mumbled and farted during his part. lol.
Nice one! There is a scene in Eddie Murphy's Dr. Dolittle where he's running through a dog kennel (and of course the Dr. can hear all animals talking) so we hear so many voices yelling out to him and somewhere in that mix a dog shouts "I'm Keyzer Soze". I immediately spit my drink and was coughing/laughing so hard. I had to rewind to confirm. Well played, sound mix team ;)
Another puzzle-box just like The Sting! Watch it again. You'll see a whole different movie. There are so many subtle hints and clues that will leap out at you now, even in the camera work - check out the way it focuses more and more on Kaiser's left hand as he walks away from the massacre in flames, the hand that Verbal has locked up in supposed palsy. His anger when Cuyon asks about Kaiser Soze - his great story just got derailed and now he has to think on the fly. (That's also why you see him rubbing his temple in closeup. He's editing as he goes, trying to make the shaky edifice stand up straight enough to get him the hell out of the police station.) And there's all the moments when, now that you know what's happening, you can see Kaiser trying not to laugh in Cuyon's face. The whole thing is complex and subtle and hilarious. One of my Top Five films, for sure.
But that's the even greater thing - the likelihood that "Verbal" knew Kujan would eventually hear the name Keyser Sose and his whole "has to now think on the fly" was all planned and part of the con from the beginning.
One of the best examples of unreliable narrator in cinematic history. You know the line-up happened. You know NY Finest Taxi Cab service was hit. You know the ship was hit and what was on it. You know there is an Edie Finneran. Everything else likely didn't happen as we saw it if it happened at all.
yes! i tried this many times....to figure out exactly what is verifyable fact and not. You nailed it. Maybe 4 facts in Usual Suspects. That's all you know. AND....you dont know if ANY Of these facts (the line-up, Taxi Cab hit, Ship explosion, and Edie Finneran) are related to each other at all. They may have been just another note on the corkboard.
The “Aha” moment for me was when he retrieved the lighter from lockup; he’d struggled with a lighter earlier, so it seemed odd he didn’t have matches or something he could use.
The one hint you get earlier in the movie about what is going on is when Agent Kujan first comes into the office where they are keeping Verbal is that Verbal is just sitting there, staring intently at the bulletin board. First one spot, then another, then another. That's the only hint at all.
There was also the clue when Keaton asks what language they are speaking and Verbal says immediately "hungarian" (something Soze would know due to the flashback Soze scene)
"Verbal" is a nickname, but in the street your nickname has more value than your real name.... that's why there are so many "Fat" Tonys, or "Quickfingers" Loui, or my personal favourite "Snorky" Al Capone (Because he hated the other nickname people known him for, "Scarface")
"Preeeteee!" You crazy pyro you! This movie never gets old for me.....great story telling and acting....watch it again and you'll find more details each time.
A true masterpiece of deception in a movie where you think its going 1 way and ends up another! I had to watch this movie twice in a row when I 1st saw it because I was like "What did I just see!!!" Great reaction Chris I knew your mind would be blown!!
The twist ending...holy crap!! I did not see that one coming! 😱😱 The film won 2 Oscars: Best Supporting Actor for Kevin n Spacey and Best Original Screenplay by Christopher Macquarie.
Can't tell you how happy I am you got to watch this. It's one of my all time favorite movies. It's worth a couple watches. The end reveal sequence is a masterpiece
So happy you watched this and I enjoyed your reaction. Really glad you liked it. It’s one of my favorite films. So many quotable lines. “How do you shoot the devil in the back? What if you miss?” And, “he showed these men of will what will really was.”
Yes, it’s a real thing for your urine to become so thick, it gets gooey. It can also be orange, tea brown, blood red. If you’re sick enough. Stay hydrated
I can't believe I only watched this great film for the first time a few months ago and I'm a big fan of 90's films lol. Awesome film great acting great.....well just great everything
The key line that wasn't included in this reaction came at the end of the line-up scene. "Besides, it was fun. I got to make like I was notorious." Many people end the movie thinking that he was notorious, but he admitted early on that he was making that up. Yes, he picked up details from the board, which an interrogation room would lack. But he also made his character appear more amazing than he really was.
I remember seeing this in theatres. Normally you get a general hubbub as people leave but for this there was very little. People were just coming out with a look of 😮. I love that there are still people that haven't seen this and don't know the twist. Even better that we can watch them react.
There were hints Verbal was Keyser Soze earlier in the film before the big reveal..one..he actually says "I killed Keaton" when Agent Kujon was interrogating him and pushed him to the floor. And when the police officer gives Verbal his belongings back..a cigarette lighter (gold), a watch (gold), and a pack of cigarettes..all things that Keyser Soze showed he had at the beginning of the film when he killed Keaton.
Great reaction to a classic, I worked on a western in Montana last spring and Gabriel Byrne was the lead actor. I was assigned to drive him into town so he could grocery shop, I drove him to a couple stores than back to his rental house. I was picked up and I told Byrne that I was leaving and it was nice to meet him, at the end I said, "I almost called u Keyser Soze earlier", he laughed and from then on I was his driver the whole production, he's a really nice guy also
"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist." Very few see it coming and, out of those reactors, a couple are shocked they were right. Fun Fact: In an interview, Kevin Spacey revealed that Bryan Singer managed to convince every one of the major actors that they were Keyser Soze. When first screened for the company of actors, Gabriel Byrne was so stunned when he found that he wasn't Keyser Soze that he stormed off into the parking lot and argued with Singer for a half hour.
Wow! I mean, he filled the scenes, of course he thought he was Soze. What a great trick. I could imagine being shocked if I had suggested verbal was Soze. It would have been a total joke suggestion.
Yay! I love watching reactions of this movie. My favorite part about rewatching it is seeing how much Verbal smirks whenever Dave calls him stupid or something else derogatory. Tiny little Spacey-smirks that feels like it gives all away. Also, 13:20…hysterical.
It's funny how easy it is to hide something obvious, if you use a different language. Soze come from the turkish idiom söze boğmak, which means "to talk unnecessarily too much and cause confusion". So, Kaiser Soze basically means "The King who talks too much". Verbal got his nickname because people said he talks too much.
@12:00 is just an amazing thing to see the 2nd time through. He's smiling and smirking because he's thinking "this is going to be incredibly easy" because the cop wants it to be Keaton.
Chris: I'd love to be a Patreon, but being retired, I'm on a fixed income. But you know I love your reactions. How about letting us "Ham and Eggers" vote on a poll here on RU-vid? Another great reaction to an incredible movie.
I've just been saying to some musicians I follow on Twitter that I'd love to be able to support them more financially but circumstances don't allow that for me right now. (Frustrating as I LOVE music!). The same with patreons for reaction channels. Hopefully soon I'll be able to support more in a financial way but just want to say appreciate everyone's hard work and efforts during these uncertain times.
An untrustworthy narrator can be a beautiful thing. Multiple stories to love here lol...❤👍 There's Verbals version (Which we hear.) & there's what really happened, Which we never actually know.
6:38 Look how he’s holding that cigarette. That’s how Russians & Eastern European people hold their cigarettes. They were giving us the answer right at the start.
The prestige and now you see me I’ve seen. Charade I haven’t! It’s royalty free and I plan to do a full length reaction on RU-vid within a month or two.
People overlook that kevin space loses in the end. His whole plan was to eliminate the one person who could identify, but in the end several cops can identify him and they already have a sketch of what he looks like. The whole thing backfired and blew up in his face and he'll probably be in jail within days.
@@richieclean but if he's just going to disappear why was he so concerned about getting to the one guy that could id him. Seems like keeping his identity secret is important. he wanted the cops to pin his identity on Keaton. It wouldn't surprise me if verbal wasn't really the big man but just another lieutenant like the lawyer, because why would the man himself go on the mission then wait around for the cops so he could tell them a story.
Even if this all-star duo doesn't react to em-so many movie to choose from it's completely understandable-i would highly recommend both 'Usual Suspects' & 'True Romance' to others who found this movie enjoyable. I'm sure many have already seen at least 1 as it is already-if not both. But I'm sure many others haven't; And i can almost guarantee that folks will not be disappointed in the slightest. Both have big time casts & were so supremely written & acted. 'Usual Suspects' in particular is so similar it's not even funny, while also being completely dif & its own movie in itself. But great movie & great reaction as always
One of the historical movie twists that defined movie twists. Nowadays a twist is practically expected and often easily foreseen. This reveal is a defining moment in movie history :)
Some other films with mind twisting endings are The Last Seduction, No Way Out, Body Heat, The Secret In Their Eyes (ARG), Body Double. Love your reactions!
“Lunatic homicidal revenge kick?” Isn’t that what lucifer is if you buy into that mythology? Balked against God? Others look at him saying you made me yes. But am I supposed to be slave to you forever? It is akin to a son usurping his King father At any rate we all know who he is here.oh how i loved that!
This is definitely a must-rewatch film, and quickly, too, so you can answer that question: "Did the film show me hints at these details?" You'll never answer that until you see it two times quickly. MEMENTO is even more so - I sat thru it twice in fact because I was soooo screwed-up by the end (not "by the twist ending" but by the credits that I had to see it again immediately. Same with FUNNY BONES, too, which bills itself as a comedy but NO ONE tells us that it's a MYSTERY and both a crime and a family mystery. We only know that at the end of the movie.
There's a game called Unheard, which is a detective game focused on audio recordings, it is divided in chapters and the story told in the third chapter of the game is VERY similar to the story of this movie, I actually heard about the usual suspects for the first time on a comment in a channel that played this game.
The only thing I think you might have been able to pick up on was one scene where the investigator goes to drink his coffee and you see Kevin Spacey's eyes focus intently on the bottom of the mug, but it's so subtle I don't know if even that would work if you didn't know beforehand.
It’s definitely a small detail that would be really kind of weird to notice and then leap to he’s making it all up. I think anyway. Really cool though!
@@CasualNerdReactions Indeed. It's easy to pick these scenes out in hindsight, but I have seen a few reactors guess it's Verbal early on for various reasons. I think there may also be a few subtle inconsistencies in his story as well that can clue people in, but again, they are super easy to miss.
Fantastic, glad you didn't twig the ending early as I did. Great movie. Love your choices, you keep landing on my personal favs. Keep it going great stuff
The screenwriter of this movie, Christopher McQuarrie, made his directorial debut with The Way of the Gun, which I think is highly underrated and worth watching. The only RU-vidrs I've seen react to it are gun channels breaking down the shootout scene.
Fun fact: to get the most convincing performances, the director told each actor that they were gonna be Keyser Söze and gave them a different script with alternate endings. When they found out it was Verbal, the actor for Keaton was pissed! 😂
I didn't realize it until I saw it a second time, but one of the biggest clues was when Kobayashi points out that it was Verbal who shot and killed the jeweler. Kobayashi wasn't there,so how could he have known it was Kent?
Excellent slice of neo noir beautifully realized with a crackerjack cast and clever screenplay - I remember seeing it opening day in NYC at a matinee - knew nothing outside of the trailer - and was blown away - I didn't put it all together until literally as the coffee mug crashed to the floor. Great reaction.
Not sure how many people have recommended this film but you should check out "L.A. Confidential" with Russell Crowe and Kevin Spacey. This is a phenomenal film and you already watched and reviewed one of my top 5 fav movies of all time when you reviewed "The Sting". I don't understand how "The Sting" is not reviewed by more channels! Keep up the great reviews & "L.A. Confidential" is worth a personal watch but even a better reaction because it is a great movie!!!
What!?! Chris is watching The Usual Suspects!?! This is going to be good, he said gleefully. Peter Green, who played Redfoot, stayed at the hotel I work at during the first year of the pandemic. Plague rat. He refused to wear a mask, refused to social distance. I don't know what movie they knew him from, but our housekeepers were excited he was there and were getting pictures taken with him (which ordinarily would get them fired.)
Beautiful movie, but only one of the wonderful performances by Kevin Spacey. Have a look at K-PAX where he plays a man in a mental hospital who claims to be an alien - confusing, funny, heart-rending, uplifting. I'd love to see you do a reaction to it.
This is in my top 5 movies of all time : The Usual Suspects, Pulp Fiction, End of Watch , A Fish Called Wanda , and a choice of Tom Hanks films (Green mile, or Forrest Gump, or Saving Private Ryan ... ) . Thank you for doing 1 of them, Now you just have 4, or 5 or 6 ... to go lol. Thank you again.
@@CasualNerdReactions I look forward to whichever movie you choose. Like you, My enjoyment comes from the reactions to movies I have seen, but watching the reactions of new viewers
I appreciate that the film was bold enough to give us the barely-suppressed smile and laugh at 11:55 and trusted that we still wouldn't suspect what "Verbal" was hiding. :)
@@CasualNerdReactions Absolutely! It's only when watching it back that you realize he's laughing because the cop is going on about "I think Keaton's behind everything, and I don't think he's dead! I think he was using you!" and Keyser's just sitting there like, "Wow, this dude is realllly confident for someone so clueless."
This movie's ending is actually a lot more optimistic than it first seems. Soze may have escaped for the moment, but the cops know what he looks like and his cherished complete anonymity is blown.
Not necessarily ...Soze can buy a lot of "influence", and those who aren't for sale, can have fatal "accidents"; plus, evidence can be "lost", and if everything else fails, there's also plastic surgery.....
I don't know if you've seen it, but another wonderful puzzle-box is "Memento", starring Guy Pearce, Carrie-Ann Moss, and Joey Pantoliano. Great mind-bending story.
I love this film so much. A banner year for Kevin Spacey. I'm huge on film scores and soundtracks. This one was composed by the film's editor, JOHN OTTMAN. Outstanding, brilliant work on par with this suspenseful film.
So many people think the entire story is made up, but it's not all made up, clearly some things were changed, like Redfoot, but other things like his lawyer and the back story of Soze were likely still real.
One of my top 5 Neo Noirs (post 60 film noirs) This movie and *L.A. Confidential* both mid 90s, *The Long Goodbye* '73, *Chinatown* (my Fav) 1975 with Jack Nicholson and the Cohen Brothers first ever film, *Blood Simple* '84 is IMHO, their best film besides No Country for Old Men (some say its also Neo Noir). Then there is a little know gem by Brian DePalma staring John Travolta from the early 80s called *Blow Out* I don't know why its so under appreciated. These are all powerful movies, not as good as the classic Noirs but damned close. Top 5 Classic Noirs in no particular order, Double Indemnity, The Killing (Stanly Kubrick's first movie I think), Asphalt Jungle, The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep (both Bogey movies). Good job !! Bravo, this was priceless me knowing you were going to be amazed by the ending twist. It had a Vertigo kind if sudden twist that shocks the mind.
Expanding on the YT poll for those who are not in a financial position to join Patreon would be to hold a poll on the Tube and take the top 5 from that poll to the Patreon poll for a final decision. Everyone gets to participate, but the Paying Patreons get the final decision. Like a pre-selection vote in an election. I am also on a fixed income [retired] and money just doesn't go as far as we would like. I do love your exuberance and enthusiasm for film and film work and you are a top reactor in my book. Even if we don't get a public vote, still love your hard work.
A movie I'd never seen, though I'd been told the twist by friends right after it came out on video, so it was one I never wanted to see since it had been spoiled. Glad to see you get to enjoy it so much! But my favorite film with Kevin Spacey in it is still The Negotiator where and Samuel Jackson played so well off of each other. Awesome movie!
Written and directed by Brian Singer starring a group of various people who rob a jewelry store. However, among them is a cop in disguise. But who is it?
The moment you kind of know if you're REALLLLY paying attention that Verbal is Soze is when he's actually telling the back story. If you look at the emotion in his eyes, you can tell he is recounting a personal experience, not telling the story of someone else he's never heard of until recently. The intensity of his expression gives it away. Hard to catch that on first watch, but if you watch it again that's where they let you know who he really was.
I don't agree with that at all. If Verbal is Keyser Soze then he created the mythos around him, and I have always thought that the extreme nature of that back story is there to make the "character" of Soze more frightening. It may be true, it may be partly true or inspired by the truth, but Verbal is obviously a storyteller prone to embellishing the facts so it stands to reason that he would make up the most extreme back story for his Keyser Soze persona. He clearly knows the value of a convincing lie. The evidence for this? The scene is shot completely differently from the rest of the film, and the Keyser we see is completely different in build and appearance for Verbal.
