In 1628 Sweden was building a superweapon. The warship Vasa was going to be Sweden's crown jewel...and instead it turned out to be one of Sweden's biggest blunders ever.

In this video I visit the Vasa Museum and show you what to expect from a visit to this 400 year old wreck. This video partly covers practical details like ticket costs and how to get to the museum, and what you can find on the different floors on the museum.
But I also dive into the history of the Vasa, from its construction to its ill-fated maiden voyage on August 10, 1628. And of the interrogations and hearings that followed the disaster, when the Vasa sank to the bottom of Stockholm harbor just 20 minutes into her first journey.
The results of those hearings are quite unexpected. The king Gustavus Adolphus was busy fighting the 30 Year War in Prussia at the time of the Vasa's maiden voyage, and he was furious when he heard about the disaster. But in the end, no one actually got punished for what happened. And why is that? I guess you'll have to watch the video to find out...

I have visited the Vasa three times - you gave a nice tour of the ship, the artifacts, simulation displays - but one of my favorite areas is the display of facial reconstructions from skulls found at the site of the ship's sinking. It is amazing to see human remains come to life! Thanks, Miro!

Visited here when I was in Stockholm last year. Great museum and definitely one of the better museums I visited in Sweden.

Tack for another brilliant video Miro! King's eh? Obsessed with getting their cannons out for the world to see. You'd have thought that a lesson would have been learnt by overloading and making the ship unstable with the sinking of The Mary Rose, but no. It looks like a fascinating day out. Absolutely fascinating Miro. The Vasa Museum was always on my list of places to visit when I arrive in Sweden- now it’s top of the list! Can’t wait to go there. Thank you for the vlog and the history behind this incredible ship -amazingly well-preserved. We should all be as well preserved, lol 😂. As usual a fun and informative glimpse into Sweden’s history 😊

They've done a lot of work on injecting the wood cells with special fluids and whatnot - maybe that's what we need in order to be preserved too :D But thank you, and I'm really happy to share this little piece of...embarrassing history ^_^

Vasamuseet is my FAVOURITE museum in Stockholm! In an alternate life, I'm an English speaking tour guide there. Everyone who visits Stockholm needs to see the Vasa. It's mind blowing. Plus, the museum shop has literally everything you could ever want with the Vasa on it. My favourite socks are Vasa museum socks...in case I ever need to remind myself that it sunk in 1628.

Haha, if there's one thing you learn after a visit to the Vasa, it's the year 1628. It's so firmly imprinted in my brain now that I'll never forget it

I visited the Vasa museum in November 2000. It looks like quite a lot has changed since then. But perhaps it's just that my memory has faded in 23 years. Have you done a video, or more likely a series of videos, on Skansen? I spent most of a day in Skansen and was very impressed with it.

Oh that's a good question! I recorded a video about the Sami in Skansen and a video about an autumn market, but maybe I haven't done one about Skansen itself. That's a good idea! Oh and yeah I imagine that the Vasa Museum has changed a lot of things over time actually!

They sure put some effort into that museum (apart from raising the ship itself). It looks way more "inviting" than how I eg. remember the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde from the 90s. Perhaps things have just become more "modern" / "family friendly"? Now that you're in the area, will we be seeing you perform inside the ABBA Museum in full cosplay anytime soon? 😃

I think they've always been big on making it a family-friendly place actually! And well... Let's just say that I'm planning on visiting a very Swedish place soon, but it's not the ABBA Museum :D

It would eg. be interesting to see you give a *live* intro for dummies into the complexities and delights of a kräftskiva when the time comes. That's one of the most Swedish things I can think of from the top of my head.🦐🦐🥳🥳

Thank you Miro for such a great tour. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Vasa while in Stockholm earlier last year. It was one of the highlights, to be honest. Here is something I heard from several sources: the teams of Swedes and Dutch working on the ship were using rulers that did not match each other in length. Have you heard of this?

Thanks for checking it out! And you're absolutely correct :D The Dutch and the Swedish foot were of slightly different lengths, so the ship is actually quite assymetrical. The gun ports aren't on the same positions on both sides, for example. They did work around it, but it's still really funny that they made such a mistake :D

I was there during covid 2020. I would guess it was less than 30 people in museum when I was there. Perfect time to visit.

I was in Stockholm in 2022 for a day, I didn't have the time to see this museum, but I did check out the royal park. But not to worry! Because I'll be back in April of this year! I can't wait to see this place!

The Vasa story is amazing, so many wrong decisions made that sealed her fate. We went to the Vasa museum when we were in Stockholm and I was quite surprised at her size, she must have been a magnificent ship. The mystical figures all had meanings, the one I remember seeing was a man transforming into a seal, it was to help lost sailors find their way home. Our friends in Sweden, her grandfather was in the team that raised the ship and her Father was there when it broke water for the first time. Loved the Video Thank You

Thank you so much, Miro. The Vasa Museum is one of my special attention in Stockholm. I am too glad, you made a video about it. 😊 I can not imagine this monster has sailed across to the Baltics. If this happened Swedish Empire might look different today. But it has a cool story and people can see it now in Stockholm. It is in better condition than wrecked in battle. History has repeated itself. We have seen two gigantic battleships sunken on the battlefield and were less effective in operations. Bismarck and Yamato class ships I am mentioning. I won't dive into the history. It will take unending discussions. 😅 Thanks for sharing this adventure with us. I think the price is a bit salty but worthy too. We ended up having another wonderful Sunday with you. Have a great day.😊

Nice to hear you mention both the Bismarck and the Yamato! I'm not all that interested in wars, but there's something really fascinating about huge ships :D Haha, I first learned about the Yamato from watching an old anime called Space Battleship Yamato actually. @@ThreeStarVagabond Also I forgot to mention that maybe they forgot to break a bottle of champagne on the board. So they can blame that ritual. 😅 I am not sure Sweden had champagne on 17th centuries. Thanks for your nice return. I want to check the anime. Sounds interesting. Have a nice week too 😊

Haha good point! I could imagine that Sweden didn't have access to such fancy wines back then. In fact, was champagne even invented back in the 1600s? Hmm... I wonder what they broke instead. Probably a bottle of beer :D

@@ThreeStarVagabond Haha 😄 They must get permission from Beer Pharoah for that. 😅 My curiosity flamed up again . They were doing this ritual for blessing the ship and the crew. Like baptisms of newborn babies. And if it is true Vikings were doing it with human blood. Many cultures had different blessing types. Maybe before making a sea voyage we need to do our blessing ritual. 😅
