Just saved a ton on my taxes by switching to Catholicism.

There's one major variable that wasn't covered here: the Catholic Church's expenses. A more interesting topic, I think, is the Catholic Church's cash flow. And you'd be surprised how socialist the model is. Looking at donations as their primary source of income is merely scratching the surface.

Correction: Pope Benedict XVI didn't die in 2013; he merely resigned. He's still alive at 94 years of age.

One common issue in describing things as "worth $X" is that it doesn't contextualize. A lot of wealth here is not liquid in the slightest, i.e. churches, land etc... The Vatican doesn't just have 30 billion in cash lying in a basement somewhere. Further, illiquid assets are still subject to price change.

188 out of 195 countries earn less than $5,454 USD a month in income. Australia ranks #13 with an avg monthly income of $4,474 USD. Probably hard to calculate the wealth of the catholic church off the conditions of the church’s business in Australia. Having said that, it’s probably beyond what we imagine. Great choice of topic.

Slight list of criticisms. 1. The Vatican really came to fruition in the 1900s when the Pope struck a deal with Mussolini to have him and Hitler leave the Vatican/Roman church alone and to control more or less the same land today. Just so there wasn’t tensions between Catholics and the axis powers during ww2. It wasn’t really finalized in the 1870s. (Edit: I think it was called the Lateran accords) 2. That money calculation at the start ,while a good possibility, is a really big assumption that many can say is really a fraction of the final amount. 3. Pope Benedict didn’t die, he retired (the second in history to do so) and he’s alive today apparently.

I heard the first 1 minute on the church valued at 30 billion in Australia and calculated the per-user subscription against that. It also seems wrong to multiply $5454 per user (derived for Australia against other countries) * 372 million. I tried to find the sources your claims are based on and could clearly see a disclaimer on warranties of accuracy in your description of the documentary. Avoiding references mislead viewers but posting them helps avoid fake news.

My family, during WW2, ran a very profitable department store and had become millionaires. My Grandfather's Uncles had gambled away a bit of the family fortune, and around a million euros were left. That was in the 1960s. My Grandfather was meant to inherit that million, however they found a closer relative, a Nun in a convent in Ireland. Therefor the money went to the Catholic Church. Could've been a millionaire 😔

When you invest, you're buying a day you don't have to work

The math in this video is intellectually dishonest. Fails to isolate an annual amount earned per person which is a basic stat needed to come up with s more realistic figure. Instead you used overall net worth which is a combination of recent and past earnings. Also the wealth isn't concentrated at the top as payroll, maintenance, and other expenses stretch from a local to international level.

Correction: Multiplying an average donation by all baptized Catholics is wildly inaccurate. The vast majority of Catholics dont even go to church let alone donate. Egregious assumptions being made in this video.

Small correction: it wasnt Hitlers idea to funnel a part of german catholics income to the vatican, this was already done in the Weimar Republic and is still done here in Germany. The Church held lots of land in the Holy Roman Empire and had a lot of Prince Bishops there, who were on par with dukes and acted as temporal rulers over their territory. After defeating the HRE in the Second Coalition War, Napolon forced a complete territorial reform upon the HRE in the Peace of Luneville in 1801, which dissolved hundreds of small german territories (including all principalities held by bishops) and redistributed their lands among their bigger neighbours. The church lost a lot of land, real estate and money during that process. When the Weimar Republic was constituted after WW1, our politicians decided to compensate the church indirectly, by allowing it to raise its own taxes on the catholic german population. Thus the "Church Tax" was created, which is directly subtracted from every german catholics income. When the current german state was founded after WW2, our new constitution copied that part of the Weimar Constitution and acknowledged the churches' privilege to raise its own taxes on german ground, and thus up to this day 9% of every catholic germans' income tax is paid directly to the church as compensation for a territorial reform Napoleon forced us to do... So this concept didnt arise with Hitler in any way, we had it from 1918 to today without interruption.

I respect Jake's videos but this one has far too many inaccuracies to be as substantive as his other videos Donations don't even count for the majority of the Catholic church's revenue stream and setting it up as the premise of the video was disingenuous. You even stated the real revenue stream of the Vatican later on the video, real estate. Calculating it would be near impossible since the Vatican recently just revealed the segment of their real estate holdings, but counting every Catholics on the anglosphere with the ludicrous $5454 mark of every Catholic alive there and not pointing out that the majority of Christians in the Anglosphere are Protestants. Glossing over the fact that indulgences was one of the main reasons of the Protestant reformation where several Christian nations decided to sever ties to the Roman Catholic Church and thus shrinking the influence of the Catholic Church on Europe as a whole where the tales of the Papal States aggressively taxing people began The last mistake I'm going to point out is Pope Benedict XVI, it was major world news that he stepped down and the 2nd in history to do so. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI is still alive Pope Pius XII's involvement with the Third Reich is still a contentious topic among Catholics and I'm glad you brought it to the spotlight. One side brings the fact that the Third Reich and Mussolini's Italy had influence among the church while the other says that the Church condemned their actions in the war and communicated with resistance groups. The money still speaks at the end of the day though and people can clearly see it.

To be fair, the Vatican likely stayed neutral during WWII in order to stop the fascists from massacring the Catholics as well. They also used a great deal of their wealth and influence to save many Italian Jews from the concentration camps and smuggle them into friendly territory.

To all the Atheists here: Why would many dead things ever turn into life and consciousness? There was no reason for abiotic material to come together and form consciousness, and want to reproduce for no reason. You have realized that the universe is so perfect that if one small thing were off, we wouldn't be here, right? I don't mean perfect like you may think; I mean if gravity were off just a tiny bit, even the SMALLEST smallest amount human life couldn't exist. If the expansion rate of the universe was off just a tiny tiny bit, the universe would not exist. Humans with intelligence make iPhones. When you see a watch, is there no proof already of a watchmaker? When you see a building, can you tell that there was a builder? Some atheists argue that because we can't compare our universe to another universe that isn't designed, there is no hard evidence for our universe being designed or not. But there can't be another universe that wasn't designed, because that would imply that everything came out of nothing in a dimension that uses the concept of time. Which makes the impossibility of a creator in that universe impossible. Any universe that has matter in it implies a creator who started it, because where else could that matter have come from? And also for that matter to be so very well designed? Also, because it was possible to "start" that universe, there is time in that dimension, and so there is even more evidence of a creator because time is very articulate and designed. In any version of a universe, there is hard proof of a creator, even at the start of that universe, because of the designed matter and time. The process of creation requires the concept of time, as you cannot create anything without time existing first. But Atheist and Theist scholars both agree that the universe had a beginning. Because the universe had a "beginning," that implies that time had a beginning. Whatever force started time, nothing else could have created that force. You cannot create anything without time first existing, and that force literally created time itself. And so that force could not be created by anything else. (Reread and think) No matter what, you can't rule out God. This is proof of the highest power. We cannot comprehend how infinitely powerful this God (by God, I mean whatever intelligence designed the universe) is. Because he created the universe, he is infinitely powerful. If you search for that highest power long enough, I promise you will find out His name is Jesus. I hope a good seed has been planted have a great day. What I have is relationship with Him not a religion.

That statement at the beginning of the video: "Catholics donate 5K" - then to multiply it by all the "alleged" catholics in Europe and America, gives an erroneous number. In Europe at least, it is tradition to basically "sign up" to the Church, but then they have nothing to do with it for most of their life. So they do not contribute that much money. And even common churchgoers in Europe do not donate such large quantities. At most 200 bucks.

I'll preface this by saying I'm not a catholic. Wealth does not equal liquid assets. While the church may be worth these massive amounts of money, that doesn't mean they have it all in the vatican bank. The church doesn't rent out the cathedrals or their masterpieces of art painted into the walls of basilicas. They can't turn their wealth into currency without giving up their churches and the things within them. Yes, while there are certainly excesses, even if you wanted to sell a jewel encrusted scepter you would have to find a buyer, or you have it broken down and loose potentially millions in "wealth" from the artistry of the piece. The Catholics also run charities and orphanages and provide for people's spuritual needs (even if they do it poorly in some cases), and that's something that is hard to put a number on, and is a human universal.

This is way off. The initial calculation of the "Church's Wealth" is based off of a rough estimation of the value of the Australian Church, which is then used to make another very rough estimate of the entire Church's world internationally. Video maker comfortable leaves out that these numbers do no represent liquidity but rather assets like Churches, Hospitals, Convents and works of art to name a few. I'm Catholic and open to criticisms but this is an unbelievably cheap documentary, expected something more professional.

Well sure, but the Church is the biggest non-goverment provider of education and medical aid, so it makes sense that they have a lot of wealth, you can't really help people if you don't own anything. There’s just too much assumptions, misstated facts and flat out inaccuracies that it’s difficult to take this video seriously. How am I supposed to take this video seriously when recent historical events like the resignation of Pope Benedict is reported incorrectly here? This video is so poorly researched from the basic estimation of the churches wealth, to Luther’s work on indulgence, that the only conclusion I can come up with is, Jake started with a premise and then cherry picked the facts to support the argument. You’ve done much better videos in the past, great ones that I love but this one belongs in the bin. Just as a disclaimer I’m not even Catholic.

The reason why it’s hard for me to believe any of this information is because he has SO much information wrong. A lot of the things he says, things that are critical facts, are wrong. For example, the easiest mistake to avoid-“after the death of the sitting pope”. He said that the sitting pope died and then Pope Francis was elected. This isn’t true. Pope John Paul 2 died, then it was Pope Benedict 16th, and after him (while Benedict was still alive), Pope Francis took over

The 30 billion valuation isn't given to the directly to church. Most schools in Australia are Catholic, but allows orthers religions to learn there. The average fee is 7k per student. Most are used to pay off the school staff and churches up keep.

As a catholic we are 100 percent aware of the Vatican wealth but in the end the vast majority of Catholic donations are made to local churches and organizations

Love the video, but there are a lot of misconceptions about the contents. First, talking about Papal Tiaras, they aren't made by Popes or by Church leaders themselves. Papal Tiaras are made, crafted, and donated by the congregation where the Popes formerly served as a bishop in their dioceses. That also includes Rings, embroidered crosses, and other sacred Vessels. And secondly, the current financial liquidation of the Church isn't like how it was run during the middle ages, the 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Yes, the Church still has a lot of secrecy in terms of its finances, but you cannot assume where the money goes. It's an overstatement when the video says how the Church's money was spent to enrich the lifestyle of the Popes. This may be true, but not today. Contrary to popular belief, the Church's Finances are more transparent than it was before despite the Vatican Bank still being within scandal issues. Thirdly, the video failed to show a list of liquidations on how the massive Church money is spent on. It didn't show how much the Church spends its money through charities across the globe, how money is spent on non-clergy employees and personnel, or the maintenance of centuries-old Churches and establishments. And the video only shows the extreme bad side of the Finances of the Church and not the bright side of how it is really spent. And talking about donations, the video emphasizes that the Church forces its congregation to donate to the Church, which is extremely false. It was if you were living during the Renaicenasse Popes, but not anymore. There is Peter's Pence, but it doesn't force you to donate. The Church doesn't force its members to donate, technically the Church encourages people to donate whatever they want to donate even if it's just a dime. I've been serving in the Church for a very long time, the statements that the video emphasizes, comparing and overexaggerating comparing the past and prests don't reflect what is actually happening in Parish Churches and Chaples. The contents here are also overexaggerated. Like how the narrative was overexaggerated how the Church was profiting during the 2 world wars, this was never true. There may be truth within it, which I cannot deny, but the rest is just completely overexaggerated. In fact, the job of the Vatican at that time was to introduce a compromise between two sides, and both sides refuse to make a compromising peace. The photo shown at 10:06 has nothing to do with Church gaining money. The photo has a backstory that this video fails to show. Several hours before that photo was snapped, bombs fell in Rome either dropped by the Axis or the Allies. The Pope, with his aids, went to the affected areas in Rome, with bags filled with Cash, and started donating them to affected individuals in Rome. The photo that was snapped at that moment has nothing to do with the Pope asking for alms, but he was citing a prayer with his arms raised and people joining him in prayer and kneeling, a historical moment actually that is undermined till this day. The Church does in fact own a lot of property, which is basically true, and they profit from it. But it still doesn't justify how the Video biasedly didn't cite how the money from revenues and profit is going, except how the video only emphasizes, and I quote, "feed the lavish lifestyles of popes" which is already biased from the very start. It didn't show anything that involves liquidation except News Links, numbers, and video clips. IF you search them, most of the accused allegations are mere estimations from journalists, they may hold some truth, but it doesn't entirely justify the activity on the ground, not even in a huge margin. The video fails to show some sort of liquidation, which the Church continues to liquidate, in spite of both proven and debunked accusations of scandals in the Church's Finances. I have attended a lot of financial liquidation meetings, church-related within and outside of the diocese I currently belonged to, the real thing tells a different story than the video. I have nothing against the creator or anything, I'm only citing the misconceptions of a 1st person's perspective of the Church's finances that cites no practical knowledge of what's happening on the ground. Love the video tho, visuals and the articulation of voice is great. But be more open-minded next time. Well, the good thing about the catholic church is that you choose how much you want to donate. You could donate nothing to all of your life savings. It's all about what YOU want to give unlike most protestant churches in the US.

I think your estimation based on their wealth in Australia is wrong. Australia is a relatively young country. In Europe the church has been gathering wealth for way longer, especially land that is nowadays getting more and more expensive. So you might have to add one or two zeros at your global estimation

The whole analysis hinges on the $30bn number which counts Church land as wealth in Austria. But Church real estate wealth isnt liquid, and they cannot mortgage it. They are committed to owning the church properties so that churches wont close down. These properties may appreciate in value, but because the Church cannot sell it, the appreciation does not matter, it is forever illiquid. I think might as well count this as not wealth. Like what if the Catholic church properties were not churches, but just a regular real estate company - this is fun for creating a conspiracy video, but in practice it is just not a working analogy. It is more like non-profit entities that the vatican technically controls, but they can not sell their assets. The real wealth the church has is that which is liquid and available to the vatican.

Absolutely great video! Just a small mistake: At 16:15 you talk about Francis becoming pope after the “death” of the last pope. The past pope is actually still alive, he’s Benedict XVI, and he “resigned”, something that never happened over the last 1000 years: popes are popes until death. I’m saying it not to be critical, I love your videos, but because I think this fact even helps diving deeper into the topic you analysed: rumours say that he got forced to resign as his way of talking was particularly snobby, detached from the people and very “unmarketable”. He was actually very knowledgeable but hated by many catholics, so they decided to put a much more marketing friendly pope. Being an atheist from a Catholic Italian family, I clearly saw how well their plan worked. With the past pope, even strong catholics were slowly losing interest. The church was at one of its lowest with him. Damn, I'm not even an expert on the subject, but I know enough of 20th century history and the history of europe to know that a lot of what was said in this video was either completely wrong, leaning on a particular unconfirmed theory and presenting it as fact, lazy assumption or twisting of the truth.

Great video thanks. One note: Martin Luther's Ninety Five Theses about indulgences in 1517 was the first nail in the coffin for the Catholic practice (not the French Revolution). It literally started several different religions (e.g. Protestantism, Lutheranism) which all took money away from the Vatican; not to mention several wars and the deaths of 10,000s of Europeans.

Wealth and revenue are two very different things though. They might actually be running on a deficit after covering all operational cost regardless of how much assets they own.

I hope you read this as a constructive comment, Jake. You're young and I believe you're trying to do an honest work, but when you come accross complex themes that you are not familiar with, you should be extra careful before publishing a video. You should also talk to a respectable member of the institution you're denouncing so they can have a say too. By the way, this isn't the first video i've seen in this channel, and althought I detected some faults on other videos, I had to comment on this one because it is the most scandalous.This video is full of old lies. The Church as an institution never sold indulgences neither promoted it. Yes, some members sold them or didn't use the collected fee justly for a long time but these have always been considered wrong. It is also important to know that the vast majority of indulgences are gained by prayer and acts of Charity towards the needy. Anyway, after so many abuses, the Vatican prohibited fees on indulgences in the 16th century under heavy penalty. One more naive lie said here concerns the wealth of the Church. It sure is considerable, but is it that impressive considering it is a 2,000 year institution? So I think the issue that this video doesn’t really seem to get is that while the Catholic Church itself is one religion, the finances of the churches themselves are not all grouped together like one big bank for example. It’s more like you have a family of 5, but the three kids are all grown up, have their own careers, and are out of the house doing their own thing. So for example, the money that I donate at my parish goes to my parish. It doesn’t wind up at the Vatican. Theoretically could a donation be made to the Vatican? Possibly. But that’s kinda rare and it would not be much because the weekly donations are what helps to keep the church afloat. So the fact that the Vatican was running a deficit makes sense. Regardless of your stances on Catholicism the Vatican spends a lot of money on the people and let’s be real, pope Francis certainly isn’t spending that money on himself. He’s one of the most simplistic popes in terms of wealth.

The kings and queen of the past donated their wealth to the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church has been donating as well to Charities but it does not mean they have to give all of their wealth. Just to be clear, it does not belong to the pope.

I'm not Catholic but I dislike your maths at the start of the vid. Just because the Australian government estimates that the Catholic church in their country is with 30 billion dollars does not mean that on average each member of the church contributes 5400 dollars . Most of that wealth is non liquidable in the form of cathedrals and other sites of worship. If they sold these sites they likely would not be able to sell for anywhere close the amount they are worth. You also are ignoring the high operating costs, the priests need places to stay, food, and healthcare. Most of them are on the older side and not as healthy, and their healthcare costs at least in the US are astronomical. I have a professor who is a Catholic priest and he was talking about it costing the church over 20 thousand per year per priest in just healthcare. You're also ignoring the upkeep of these properties, a fancy church needs to spend a lot of money on keeping the grounds kempt to attract any members at all. Any profits the Catholic church generates on an ongoing basis are due to donations, which are beginning to become less frequent as catholicism is not the most popular religion anymore and there is a lot of scandals in the church. The priest who teaches my class actually is an attorney and used to be the attorney for the Vatican in the UN and now is in a small parish in NJ while also having a law practice on the side and he had to overhaul the donation structure of that church, increase youth outreach, and release yearly reports on financial data to anyone who wants to see it just to get out of the red. His church was the first Catholic church to adopt this approach and is currently one of the few to do it.
