Ah, Chaos 3.5. Such a brilliant time to be a Chaos player. I ran Night Lords, my Chaos Lord was basically Ghost Rider, his unit of Chosen all armed with Scythes taken from the old zombie boxed set (they ran as great weapons which back then granted +1 strength). Such a fun and creative time.
as a long suffering CSM collector/player I feel your pain Dave. But supposedly we're getting new things as GW say this is the year of Chaos (even though its almost half way through already and still no codex in sight). Many of those ancient minis you showed are in my collection too - and yes, Defilers are fantastic.

@@MikChaos maybe but I hope not. If I remember correctly editions on average last for four years. We are still actually just under two years of this estimated time schedule as 9nth Ed came out in July if 2020 so all fingers crossed and we still have two and a quarter of a year before 10th drops and we need knew codex’s
There are 2 problems though. 1: Space Marines will just be better. GW doesn't know how to write a proper game anymore. It's deliberately writing rules creep, so when Space Marines get a new codex right after Chaos, they'll just be better again and Chaos will be trash. 2: 2023 is going to be the year of 10th edition. That means a new Space Marine codex will come out again and make Space Marines even better and Chaos will continue to get dumbed on, making that "year of Chaos" not matter at all. There's also the problem of Chaos being a huge joke in the lore. Abaddon is a Saturday morning cartoon villain that can't get anything done, and the marked Legions leans so hard into teenaged edgelordism that it's ridiculous. Chaos is more of a nuisance than a threat now, and the silly way it's being portrayed doesn't do the army any favours.
That was nostalgic seeing the old 3.5 Chaos codex. I'm glad I got to enjoy those times. I've still got my old army but don't really play miniature games these days, more board games, but a decent Chaos release could pull me back. Would especially love some new Khorne Berzerkers. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!
What an amazing and creative way to showcase Revenged Star miniatures and the painting tutorial as a nostalgic journey through your Warhammer experience! This video held my attention like a strategic war on 3 fronts. Well done! I've been playing since 3rd edition and I started with a box of Marines but eventually settled on Necrons for a while then Tau. Currently I'm working on a custom World Eaters army, making each model a conversion. The idea: knights from a feudal world who turn to Khorne but keep their honor. All my models are very Dark Angels tuned khorne. My Demon Prince is a modified Lionel Johnson with wings and a berserker helm

i like to know how you guys got into minis. Its interesting, and wow, and lovely that you actually kept the army that you had from the time you were a kid. Seeing the then and now, really shows how far minis have come
My first solid army was Emperor's Children. That pink was hard to achieve, but it made every assault phase where they killed everything before they could strike (higher initiative) feel like a glory kill highlight reel.
I was almost completely lost in the dive when i was first getting into warhammer 40k, luckily the sisters of battle we’re getting new models at the same time, and thats how i became a sisters player

Having started Chaos around the same time you did, I too have rode the ebs and flows the codex and editions. I too believed 8th edition, a breath of fresh air in the power and complexity creep 5th through 7th brought. Then on and on 8th, then 9th went. Now with 10th rumored on the way, as well as a new Space Marine codex, just beyond the Chaos codex. It's hard not to feel forgotten.
Great video found your history with the "Warp" 😂 very interesting. I also started out with CSM's but was more into Khorne and Nurgle, although, the CSM Codex for 4th Edition (I believe it was then) the Codex had listed the names and pictures of the various Chaos Space Marines so I chose to follow the colours of the "Steel Legion" backed up by the "Masters of Mayhem" I went so far as to print off their respective iconography on water transfer sheets (pain getting the sizes right when I began). I also had to get all the main Characters, as well as a crap load of ForgeWorld. Without counting the FW models, I collected 25000 points of CSM's. Don't tell my Wife, but I'm still growing that army, along with my DA's - 20000 points, AdMech - 12000 points and Necrons - 18000 pts cause my Wife has mention in passing - my story and I'm sticking to it, that if I want more or to start another army I have to either purge some of what I have or put some in storage as they're taking up too much room (My hobby room is full and is now spilling out into our bedroom 🤣)
I enjoyed the perspective you proffered to us about your journey painting the same faction over many years. I personally liked the critique of your older work, as well as the painting guide (not really a tutorial of course) running in the foreground.
Those OG Obliterators we’re pretty impressive in the day but the weapons were a bit under sized for them. I did some nice conversions to put full sized weapons growing out of their arms for a guy who commissioned me to paint his GT armies.
Great video - I enjoyed it a lot. I am a Warhammer-Gamer for over 25 years an I still have the most of my first models... I still like them, but new models and armies are amazing chances to improve skills and get creative! Thanks for your story
I enjoy hearing stories like yours, I‘m always surprised about similarities to my own and even more about the differences! Though I never had a Chaos army, I feel your pain with the changes (and power level) they’ve gone through. I witnessed this mostly downhill trend with my #1 tabletop opponent, who loves his Chaos probably about as much as you do, from 3.5 all the way through index 40k. Thank you for sharing!
that burnout from GWs poor treatment of certain armies is exactly what lead me to start making my own rule system (im taking a break from it at the moment because all the potential solutions for blast weapons make me sad)
That had been a thing forever with GW, several new armies got released and then, largely forgotten...both ones intended to be a normal member of their forces or some that were special such as the Vampire Coast or Kislev back with Fantasy...you also had the Brettonians and Wood Elves that barely got anything at all near the end with codexes that were barely playable while others repeatedly got them. 40K had the complete abandonment of the Squats until recently and the Sisters of Battle were left to languish for a while...the Inquisition kind of came out of deciding to remove the Heroes of the Imperium list from it's old place and into it's own thing and trashed a lot of neat, themed armies in the process
@@d1ngopwns OPR is very good but I crave a little more complexity than that which is why I'm working on my own. Something to keep me playing at home but won't overwhelm my fiancée.

Funny how Dave referred to Vader and the storm troopers as his inspiration for collecting Chaos, since Chaos Marines are more like the Rebel Alliance. WH40 originally was a lot like Star Wars from the Empire's pov.
I felt the same way about normal marines. getting back into the hobby after 15 years I ended up buying mostly second hand kits from 2nd-4th edition as the new stuff lacks the feeling of the older things. that being said though, new plague guard are 👌
Really enjoyed the hobby journey story! It's cool that you actually came up with a custom paint scheme. As far as I can interpret from my 3rd edition orks I painted them red, yellow, and blue because I wanted them to be fast, rich, and lucky. I'm not impressed with my teenage self's creativity
Personally I don't play warhammer (even though I would love to!), but I know the feeling Dave I have played a card game for a while now and my favourite deck in the game was really good when it first came out, but after a few sets of support it has just fell away into nothingness. The sad part is, it hasn't even been out for that long - and it already feels like the creators of the game have completely forgotten about it / ignored it's problems. I suppose we can continue hoping for better support someday together!
I used some Dark Vengeance terminators and guns from Helbrute multipart kit to convert them into my Alpha legion obliterators. They look absolute badass.
the ravaged star minis fall HEAVILY into the same trap so many 3rd party chaos minis do for me they are just too overdesigned chaos models are highly detailed and spiky sure, but basically every 3rd party attempt at them just throws those details and spike up to 11 and imo they always look just...bad the "obliterator" model looks decent, but all of the standard "marines" look awfull as they are just utterly cluttered with overdesigned details
@@michaelsorensen7567 I'd argue that is the problem with a lot of the GW models especially the new ones is that they also take it all to 11 or 12(looking at you Deathguard)
The issue with veil touched: the obliterators are only available as monopose in a big high price box.. Sound familiar? ;) I really hope they are successful and interested in bringing them further, as in easier available globally, smaller packs and 3d printing
in my honest opinion there was something about old chaos that was simple yet complicated. something as simple as rivets and spikes still catch more my attention than the newer models or models that are so overdone that they look like 700 dollars but are 30ish. in saying that i miss my 5 emperor's childen i owned back then

Agreed tbh, I'm thinking of using 3D printed Mk IV and Mk V power armour and modern CSMs to make a force of Night Lords to play 30K and 40K with at some point.
I always thought that chaos marine armies should be a small core elite marines with a bunch of cultists filling out the cannon fodder slots. Because the legions could not replenish their numbers over 10k years in the warp, but they could attract traitor guard or PDF cultists to their ranks. Then summon some demons in battle.
I lost the majority of my army except my old metal Ragnar, my metal Bjorn and an old metal space wolves iron priest... I miss everything else I had, my bikes, tanks, long fangs, land speeders.... so much missing....
Dude, I want to learn how you did the dunecrawler/defiler conversion. That is an absolutely sick conversion, and I would do that for my TSons if I knew your methods!
I still have some of my original 40k stuff, but most of it went on ebay in the early 2000's. I haven't gone back to Chaos yet, but World Eaters getting their own codex and (hopefully) new berzerkers will probably change that.
I feel like the ravaged star models are too expensive for what they are. They're converted to my currency, still without VAT (19%) and shipping already more expensive than their GW equivalent. And GW reached a point for me where the minis are just too expensive to justify. Now if they'd be significantly cheaper or sold as STL's I could see the appeal but otherwise I kinda don't. Aside from that, fine paint job and nice collection, CSM is, "as usual" in a bad spot. Hopefully the upcoming codex will change things up but at this point, I kinda lost hope in GW. Just too slow, CSM wanted their 2 wounds for 2 years now. Pure incompetence.
Yeah, they are great, but I can't afford them (I mean I could get them, but I would have a guilty consciousness). It would be less bad if they didn't only sell big boxes (something gw often gets shit on for too) or plan to offer 3d print files along the way (also something gw is not interested in)

I was introduced to the game during 3rd, and my friends had recommended I make a Chaos army (because they had already taken up a lot of the other ones). I fell in love with the faction and the lore. I love my World Eaters. That poor codex was read from to back so many times… I decided to get back into the hobby just before 8th edition, and initially planned on starting up a Chaos army again, but opted to go with Necrons instead simply because it seemed that Chaos just wasn’t getting much love from GW. Death Guard got a good bit of new models with 8th, but that was all. Now we’re almost through 9th and still nothing. Personally I have no idea how they haven’t implemented Primaris into Chaos. Seems like a good way to revamp the faction, standardize new marine size, and breathe some life into the army. But simple things like them not releasing Obliterators for years is ridiculous.
I really like the Ravaged Star models, but as a kitbasher first and foremost, they really don't feel like they're for me. I don't want to buy an entire figure just because I want to use the headpiece. I wish we were able to purchase bits of them instead. That I would definitely be interested in.

These Ravaged Star miniatures got me into CSM, which is exciting because I really enjoy the Horus Heresy books. I’m pretty new to the hobby so it was interesting to hear the story of how yours progressed. Also, I’ve never actually played a game of 40k despite having painted mostly space marines. How common is it to play with proxy models in friendly games? Do people care one way or another if you use proxies?
I've never played either, but consensus from what I hear is that as long as it's identifiable and consistent most people won't mind. Shops might, depending.
I started and stopped at 4th edition, until getting into kill team in 2020... So much of the later editions seem unbalanced and unnecessary. Many of the weapons don't work remotely like the real things that they used to be based on. The traitor armies we're amazing.
To be fair, the rules were never balanced. But up to about 4th or 5th edition, the game was still being written by game designers for the purpose of being a game, not my the Marketing team for the purpose of selling the next round of models.
Yep….I been an Emperor’s Children player since 7th….but lately been playing Blood Axe (sometimes using Goff rules) Orks who are fun… but I miss being the bad guys rather the the fun-guys🍄…the leaks to the new Chaos Legions look interesting , with 2 wound and 3 attacks basic chaos space marine finally appearing in 9th Ed….
I like the sparkly experiment. Any chance you could do some paint work with Green Stuff World color shift and interference paints? PS: Any chance we could see some Infinity figures make the mix? I think you might like some of the Combined Army figures!

The problem with those minis is that the designer fell into the trap where they look good when rendered on a computer, but not so much when printed and painted
@@Miniaturegeek if you look at the renders they are pretty impressive, but the models irl seem to fall flat, or at least aren't as impressive. Go compare the two and you will see what I mean
