One of my favourite Velvets songs. Lou's songs seem to veer between this kind of vulnerability, and just sheer anger. I really can't think of that much that's in between those two states. Sunday Morning is another in this kind of vein, Satellite Of Love, Perfect Day, and Make Up also. I take the point about Lou's voice, but listen to few of the covers of Pale Blue Eyes(and there's a lot), can anyone else really sing it like Lou can? I've yet to find one... (though the REM version came close!)
It was written about his first serious girlfriend, Shelley Albin, an artist he met while studying journalism, film directing, and creative writing at Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences. They were quite an artistic couple, swapping poems and paintings, but the relationship disintegrated as Lou became more volatile due to his drug use and his exploration of his sexuality. In real life Albin had hazel eyes which he changed to pale blue to conceal who he was writing about as she was married by the time he wrote the song.
And the phrase 'pale blue eyes' also turns up in Burroughs Naked lunch - possibly coincidental, but Lou often cited Burroughs as an influence or someone he would aspire to emulate.
Pretty is a very good adjective for this. The first time I heard this song was a cover by REM, and Michael Stipe closes it out saying “That was really pretty”. Another VU song with a similar sweetness is After Hours, and if you’re not keen on Lou Reed’s voice it’s not him singing, it’s the drummer Maureen Tucker.
Beautiful song, great reaction. Another "soft" Lou Reed/VU song off the Loaded album is Ocean (both versions are wonderful). Also, look into Some Kinda Love and two VU songs sung by the drummer Maureen (Mo) Tucker, After Hours and I'm Sticking With You. The latter two have interesting videos that go with them. Good stuff again . Was thinking about your channel and wondering how come one of the most prolific artists (over 40 albums in 50 years) hasn't yet featured. I know you know of him but not sure how much you've listened too. With such a back catalogue it's difficult to pick just one tune BUT ! given the road you guys have been on I request you give the legend that is Van Morrison and his "Hard Nose the Highway" a spin. It's got a line "I know you paid your dues in Canada" which may resonate with you.

You can't have listened to much of velvet underground or Lou reed if you think he can't sing .The album that this track comes from has some fantastic vocals from Mr. Reed .What goes on ,Jesus ,beginning to see the light to name but a few .His vocals were fantastic unless he chose to roughen them up for effect .Please listen to more of his stuff before consigning him to the dustbin of none singers .
you need to do solo john cale that came later he is much more talented than lou reed try song "Mr Wilson" from JOHN CALE,S ALBUM "SLOW DAZZLE "" beats all the velvet underground music they aare overrated TRy any john cale album "Paris 1919"song Andulucia is a classic I had the album years ago when I bought the cd it cost me over 50 dollars thats how classic it is
How do I go about making a suggestion the formal way that doesn't involve the comment section? Is there an email or twitter or instagram account that I can drop my suggestion in? I make requests for songs and the people that react to them are often watching the suggested song through a poor quality video, even though there are HQ videos that are hidden away from RU-vid's search results.
