Cowboy Junkies version is modeled after this version! I always wondered where they learned the version that they used as the basis for their cover (which is fabulous), since it wasn't the version from the VU album, nor was it an early demo version. Glad to finally find this version and have the mystery solved!
This version is by far the best. I love the omission of bm and slowing things down. the changed around lyrics help, but what makes it great is the lead guitar melody with the hammer-on of the rhythm on the g chord. Killer
Anyone who ever had a heart wouldn't turn around and break it And anyone who's ever played a part wouldn't turn around and hate it Sweet Jane Sweet Jane Oh, Sweet-Sweet Jane Waitin' for Jimmy down by the alley waitin' there for him to come home Waitin' down on another corner figurin' ways to get back home Sweet Jane Sweet Jane Oh, Sweet-Sweet Jane Anyone who ever had a dream anyone who's ever played a part Anyone who's gonna live lonely anyone who's ever split apart Sweet Jane Sweet Jane Sweet-Sweet Jane Heavenly wine and roses seem to whisper to me, when you smile Heavenly wine and roses seem to whisper to me, when you smile La-la-la-la, na-na-na na-na-na-na, na-na-na La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la la-la-la-la, la-la-la Oh, Sweet Jane Sweet-Sweet Jane
Michael McLoughlin This is a great recording of a great song. I don't understand how anyone could not like this recording. At least not "Anyone who had a heart"
Me sorprendió escucharla en la radio, Sweet Jane debe ser una de las canciones más hermosas jamás escritas, pero la dulzura de esta versión sobrepasa a la gentileza del álbum y a la energía de Rock and Roll Animal.
Standin' on a corner Suitcase in my hand Jack is in his corset, Jane is in her vest And me I'm in a rock 'n' roll band. Huh. Ridin' in a Stutz Bearcat, Jim Ya know, those were different times All, all the poets studied rules of verse And those ladies, they rolled their eyes Sweet Jane! whoa! sweet Jane, oh-oh-a! sweet Jane! I'll tell ya sump'n' now Jack, he is a banker And Jane, she is a clerk And both of them save their monies When they get home from work Oooh! Sittin' down by the fire, ohhh! The radio does play The classical music there, Jim "The March of the Wooden Soldiers" All you protest kids You can hear Jack say (Get ready ya'll) Sweet jane! (C'mon baby doll) Sweet jane! oh-oh-a! sweet jane! Some people, they like to go out dancin' And other peoples, they have to work, just watch me now And there's even some evil mothers Well they're gonna tell you that everything is just dirt You know that, women never really feign And that villains always blink their eyes, oooh! And that, you know, children are the only ones who blush And that life is just to die But anyone who ever had a heart, ohh! They wouldn't turn around and break it And anyone who's ever played a part, ohh! They wouldn't turn around and hate it Heavenly wine and roses Seem to whisper to her when he smiles Heavenly wine and roses Seem to whisper to her, hey when she smiles
