Me and a friend of mine recorded this on a 4 track back when it came out. He was almost blind. He had a great talent for music. I was learning. We were 16 or 17. We practiced a few times for the first time. He is the only person to this day that ever heard me sing. We enjoyed a jam session. Wish we could have done more.

If I remember right (without checking) they took the sample from an orchestra album of Stones songs that the Stones producer Andrew Oldham (sic?) put together, The Stones didn't even play on the fookin thing ! and the original Stones song didn't even have an orchestra on it ! P.S Not sure if you knew this already but the Oasis song 'Cast No Shadow' was written about Richard Ashcroft. Keep on keeping on (as they say in Wigan)

This is a great album, no duds. You should do "The Drugs Don't Work" or "Lucky Man" next, which doesn't sound anything like ELP's Lucky Man. If you gonna continue on the Brit Pop Trail, do "This is a Low" of Blur's Parklife album. Glorious! It doesn't get more 90s English than this....

Keep up the awesome work! Three songs from their earlier periods you should take a crack at: 1992: Gravity Grave. This was one of their first singles before they put an album out. It is very psychedelic, incredible bass lines and reverby guitars. It's incredibly hypnotic and you can see their influences from Krautrock and Jazz Fusion. They were considered a shoe gaze/space rock oriented band at this group. Nick McCabe is just an incredible guitarist in terms of managing feedback, delay, etc. 1993: The Sun, The Sea. This is on their debut album, A Storm in Heaven. It's a bridge from between their early shoe gaze sound and the more rock oriented sound of their next album. Slide Away is probably the best single from this album and Beautiful Mind is one of the most beautiful guitar (ambience with noise) songs ever written. 1995: This is Music. This is them at their rock oriented peak. The guitar just sounds massive, and Ashcroft has incredible swagger. History is the last single from this album and points towards the symphonic pop rock sound that they moved to in Urban Hymns. Back on My Feet Again is an incredible b-side from this era.

This song is a weird one for me. I absolutely love the first couple of minutes, but the extended coda/climax/outro - ie the next two plus minutes leaves me a bit cold. It’s not that it’s bad per se, it’s just that the verses coupled with chorus are so good and effective, the rest of the song sort of pales in comparison. I just wish they’d put in another verse, even in the form of an instrumental solo or something, and then shortened the end bit.

The thing is with Bitter Sweet that the Verve DID pay Decca to use the sample but the horrid manager, Klien who ripped off the Stones owed the polishing, not Decca. SO... The Verve thought they were ok but Kilien asked for 50%..... then realized the song was a hit and then asked for 100% of all royalties. The Stones hated Klien and had no say. When Klien died that is when they managed to give the Verve their royalties..... The Stone are the good guys in all this! *See the thamesmen video on it :)

The point is that the song is a kind of anti-sonnet: devotion without pre-ordaned structure; non-conformist modernity. It's a work of art, inspired by a real artist's desperate struggle with a serious addiction caused by a deep existential crisis. It's a recovery song: Urban Hymns is a recovery album. Well, that was always my take on it anyway ;)
