Quite right. Martin Brundle said he would put you in a position where you were going to have an accident if you didn’t get out of the way. Perfectly demonstrated when he took Prost out on the first corner of the Japanese Grand Prix, & subsequently winning the world championship.

There was some talk of Hunt making a comeback with Williams due to money issues (I think he was around 39 at the time). I wonder if that had something to do with it

@@jrp312 I wish he had of. I think he was only 2 or 3 seconds off, not having been in a race car for 11 years or so, and if he had gotten into 'racing shape' I believe he would have been back on the pace and won a few more grand prix and maybe even another World Title.

Judging by previous comments he'd complain someone like Verstappen or LeClerc was not in the other Mercedes because Hunt believed that the best team should have two top drivers.

To be fair he had bad blood with Patrese, because he blamed him for causing the crash that cost Ronnie Peterson his life.

I was really young when he was commentating with Murray but I vividly remember some of the incidents, particularly when Arnoux took Berger out at Adelaide ('89?) and even as a young boy laughing at what James Hunt said afterwards. I had always heard he had massive beef with Patrese which stemmed from the crash which claimed poor Ronnie Peterson at Monza '78 as Hunt blamed Patrese for it but I had never heard any of his barbs aimed towards Patrese Until today! Must have been a nightmare for Murray to deal with as BBC are supposed to be impartial. Having said that, thanks goodness James wasn't, otherwise we wouldn't be able to listen to such gold as the compilation you have made! Top job

Patrese had become a very mature and reliable driver in 1989. He finished 3rd in the championship and things only got better in the next several years. Hunt would never let 1978 go.

Murray Walker has admitted that when a race was quiet or boring, he’d simply comment on how well Patrese is doing to set James off for a bit of entertainment... :)
