Shrek is a franchise that has maintained a hardcore fanbase for over over 20 Years. Mike Myers beloved voice of Shrek, Eddie Murphy's Donkey, and Cameron Diaz's Princess Fiona have become synonymous with the success of the franchise. Though originally both Shrek and Fiona had completely different voices. A tragic turn of events led to Shrek and Fiona being recast, and Shrek was never the same.

It’s difficult to think about Chris Farley being Shrek when I know the Mike Myers so well. Really interesting video.
@jasonblalock4429
@jasonblalock4429 2 года назад
From the clips in the video, I think Farley would have been too down-to-earth. What makes Myers' Scottish Shrek work is that he's so larger than life. Even when he's going small, he's still big. And that's exactly what an *ogre* should be like. Farley (from the clips) sounded a bit too normal and relateable. Shrek wouldn't work as an everytroll, at least imo.
@alvexok5523

Yeah not to mention the back and forth between Eddie Murphy and the late Chris Farley didn't quite work as good as what we got in the final with Mike Myers being a good opposite to that of Murphy, honestly the two went well together, cause you have characters that stand out from each other quite a bit, in terms of voice and personality and they basically bounced off each other in a way.

Agree
@alvexok5523
@alvexok5523 2 года назад
@@bobafett4265 you are so right! They totally bounced off of each other, due to their differences. Farely's normal character style would've been too similar to Donkey's/Murphy's, someone also an American goofy chatty personality. We needed that clash of American chatty goofy verses Scottish "anti-chatty" grumpy. But for making an amusing comical team, the 2 went together like lamb and tunafish, or rather, spaghetti and meatballs. Lol (if you haven't seen the movie I got that joke from though, I just wasted some empty space and 40 seconds of my life typing it (lol))

I remember reading the original treatment for what this version was many times from 1996. Unfortunately the website is no longer available but I can try to summarize it by memory and seeing the concept art myself for what this version could've been. Shrek is a slacking teenage ogre who lives with his parents in swamp near a village. The parents scare them and wants Shrek to pass the torch but he doesn't want to scare anyone but wants to be friends and become a knight. His parents laugh at his dream and Shrek decides to run away to prove them wrong. He goes across the village and accidentally scared everyone and begins to doubt his dream until he meets Donkey who's captured by witches in a cage and Shrek frees him and scares the witches off. Shrek and Donkey become friends and Shrek shares his passion to Donkey. Donkey explains there's a palace finding a brave knight to slave a dragon and will marry a princess at King Hamilton's palace. Once they get there, Shrek tries to impress a guard by breathing fire like the book version did and scares the guard. (Another memory of mine is that he meets this guard before meeting Donkey and that's when Donkey hears a rumor of a brave beast but doesn't know it's him.) Anyway, Shrek steals knight armor and enters to King Hamilton's kingdom where Shrek is accepted and everyone already loves him despite nobody knowing he's a ogre. The one who really likes him is Princess Fiona, King Hamilton's daughter. Hamilton disagrees since he hasn't seen what he looks like. Over time, Shrek is prepared to face the dragon tomorrow morning and is overwhelmed by asking Fiona out and will try to have convince to show who he is. While Shrek and Donkey sleep in their room, King Hamilton sneaks in and sees Shrek is indeed a ogre. The next morning Shrek is exposed and everyone wants him executed or kicked out besides Fiona but they can't because he's already set to fight the dragon which Hamilton wants to see him die. This is hugely spread where even Shrek's parents hear the news and heads to the kingdom before if Shrek potentially dies. Shrek's match with the dragon is in a Gladiator style match with a fat female dragon with blonde hair. (This is where the treatment stops here but I assume Shrek stops or kills the dragon or even Hamilton is accidentally eaten by the Dragon and the Kingdom sees he isn't so bad and his parents apologize and he gets Fiona. IDK. Something like that.) From my other speculations, the plot that Chris Farley signed up for was the story we got and instead of Shrek enjoying his peace in his swamp, we get a scene of him scaring the villagers at a bar and possibly meeting the thug. This Shrek is more angry but has a soft spot and has parent issues where here, he wants to prove he can take care of himself and he wants a home and someone to share it with. (So it's possible that this version, he doesn't have his own swamp yet.) Also, Fiona was originally BORN as a ogre and in the prologue she meets a warlock who tries to make her beautiful but only sunrise and she's taken back to the castle by the dragon who catches her running in the woods at night instead of the opening book. Shrek originally discovers Fiona as a ogre after he hears Donkey screaming and is heart broken when he finds out that Fiona doesn't want to be ogre but she has a arc at the end were she accepts to love Shrek for who he is and not be a selfish Princess because she would become no different to Farquaad as a dark reflection to him. Which is kinda deeper than her character in the movie honestly. The climax also had Shrek captured by the police/knight and Donkey saves him and many fairy tale creatures team up to get to the wedding instead of Shrek's misunderstanding. These elements would later be utilized in Shrek 2 and Shrek the Musical. Shrek's original design was also disliked by Jeffery Katzenberg and had to be redesigned and the design looked closer to the Mike Myers look just with red Farley hair and green socks, as a cool fact.

As a Brit myself I don't think I ever noticed Lord Farquaad has an English accent. Shrek of course I knew was Scottish though. I really like when films have a range of accents. I think Aardman's Chicken Run demonstrates this beautifully, with mostly Yorkshire accents, but also a English received pronunciation (posh in layman's terms) and Mel Gibson doing an American accent. The accents really add something to the British charm of Aardman's stop motion, what's Wallace without his Yorkshire accent?

I watched "Dasha of Russia Reacts" reaction to Harry Potter recently and she mentioned as a kid she started to watch the first movie but the Russian dub was so bad and painful to even finish watching it since it was just 1 man and 1 woman doing all the voices. I never expected a movie would be dubbed so poorly like that. It's interesting to think about. Imagine a single man and woman re-voicing lots of classic movies already in english so we can experience what bad dubs are like for non-english speakers. It'd probably be even more funny if it were Australians. Every movie but everyone's now Australian. That's an idea for a youtube channel if anyone wants to start doing it. The humour for both kids and adults still works for today’s audience. The animation holds up surprisingly well. It was a weird series of events that lead up to it all but it all somehow came together and created something, an animated something at that, that manages to still entertain audiences to this day.

Here's a somewhat related "fun" fact. There was once a script for a comedy movie named that would be named Atuk. Production for this film was set to begin in the early 1980's, but it kept getting delayed all the way into the late 1990's. The reason for this is because there were four different actors who expressed interest in the lead role, but none of them were able to actually be in the film. Those four actors were John Belushi, Sam Kinison, John Candy, and Chris Farley, all of which passed away unexpectedly before being able to shoot the movie. After the passing of Farley, the studio decided to scrap the movie and the rest was history.

Look at the scene when Princess Fiona leaves with that F-tard king, and Shrek is confronting Donkey about lying to him. the way the animators were able to show Shrek's hurt in his face even though he was acting angry, it's amazing.

Everyone in that movie was amazing. I'm glad the production people let Mike Myers change the dialog. I think it really did set the tone of the movie. And Eddie Murphy is a genius at children's comedy and using his voice. His other stuff is kinda raunchy but everything else is platinum.

Just hearing Chris's voice, I think Shrek would have been a more serious film by comparison. You can hear the sadness in his voice, which brings a more somber tone to the scene.

I know that this decision is what make Shrek famous and what it is today, but you mean to tell me he not only asked if he could re record the lines after RECORDING THE ENTIRE SCRIPT, but it also COST THEM 4 MILLION DOLLARS, and they AGREED TO IT, POTENTIALLY ALREADY KNOWING HOW EXPENSIVE IT WOULD BE!?!?!? I know the actors play a part in the projects as well and can give ideas, but not only did he change the voice of Shrek after recording all the lines, but it also cost them a lot of money and they agreed to let him do it. That's amazing!!!

Its funny because i have always seen shrek dubbed in portuguese (im from Brasil) and the original voice actor from the first movie passed away too soon as well, funny coincidence for such a beloved character

Although I would adore to see a version Shrek played by Chris Farley and technically, we kidna did. He set a jar before he died and I know that Mike would do his best to honour the character that Farley had originally earned. In the end, it truly is the Scottish accent that makes Shrek such a memorable character.

Actors mostly suck as voice actors. I miss the day when voice actors was actually an esteemed career. With actual qualified voice actors. Not just celebrities put as voice actors

Chris Farley was always funny when he was yelling making a scene. There really wouldn't have been a scene in Shrek where he would do his funny tantrum. Van down by the river skit for ex. *jumps on a table* His calm voice would have been a little too Wreck it Ralph feel. Glad they went with Mike and glad Mike changed the movie to a Scottish accent

I am happy he did the accent, because it is part of what makes the character Shrek so interesting , the juxtaposition of being an ogre with the accent I find that makes him sound smart and "foreign" . I love me some Shrek.😊🥰
