Puppets and Justice was peak Metallica and you all know it. I remember this. They were just on another level than other metal bands at that time.

I remember watching that performance with my then-wife. At the time, I hadn't heard Metallica yet, and thought they were just another hair metal band. When the song began, I believed we were in for yet another tired-ass hair band ballad. When they kicked in with the jam, I was floored. My initial impression was blown to pieces. Thankfully, a friend/bandmate of mine had bought tickets to the upcoming Metallica show. I bought one off him, and caught the "...and Justice for All" tour. It was the first time I saw the band live. It would not be the last.

I still remember this performance, back then you could only see metal bands on Saturday nights on MTV's Headbangers ball. That was the night my parents understood why i loved metal.

I was a 15 year old kid in 1989 and I'd heard some of the metalheads at school speak of this legendary band "Metallica." I'd never run across their music at all since it never got airplay on the radio and we didn't have cable TV/MTV at home. I was on a church retreat and had some downtime in the hotel room alone for an hour or so and tuned in MTV on the set and pretty soon this music video started playing. In the late winter of 1989 James Hetfield reached through that fucking TV, grabbed my heart and soul and never let go.

The video for One was my metal awakening, and made me shed my conditioned opinions on what 'good' music was...opened a whole world of music to me, forever grateful.

Everytime i watch this it takes me back in time. I remember watching this live with my parents. I was a big fan already and my parents were not but respected their teenage son's choice of music and band . It was a big deal watching your heroes playing in front of that crowd and thinking "Now we will show them who we are". And we, the fans, became ONE with Metallica at that performance. I don't remember much because i was mesmerized by their presence, which it was not as easy as it is now, to watch a live performance, unless you attended a concert, but i remember my non-fan father saying : "They nailed it"...

That "darkness" at 0:46 never fails to give me chills

When I heard Metallica was playing on the Grammy's, I was 17. The first thing I did when I got the news was go out and buy a brand new, fresh VCR tape to record it so I could watch it over and over again as the moment when Metallica and all metal FINALLY got recognized as a true genre that had been overlooked for years. That momentous performance was only topped by the sheer audacity of the Grammy committee giving the award for "Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Recording award" to Jethro fucking Tull!!!! So when the Mighty Met actually DID win for the Black Album several years later, Lars was absolutely vindicated by saying "The first thing we have to do is thank Jethro Tull for not putting out an album this year!"

I always loved Metallica, but it wasn’t until I saw them live that I realized why they are at the top. I was blown away.

There was more talent on that stage on that moment than the whole rest of the room combined 🤘🏻

That’s awesome because I think this is EXACTLY right, you can hear the nerves in James’ voice when he first starts singing. Which is crazy because by then they’d already been all over the world but, without getting into politics those people Metallica played for that day are NOT James’ people. Having already been an extremely shy person who didn’t even want to sing in the band in the first place he was probably terrified when they first started & I don’t think anyone on the planet could blame him.

The best Metallica era, James voice was incredible, Lars and Kirk playing heavy and Jason kicking assess in backing vocals and performance. That album are so perfect, its not Thrash, its something that Metallica invented, the middle of post Thrash and some heavy stuff like traditional heavy metal, whatever, And Justice for All is raw and the lyrics are pure hate, best times whit no doubt!

There are those moments where the band gets lost in the music. They dont know anything in that moment but the music flowing in their veins. That moment when their eyes rollback in their head and they just become more. I live to see those moments. ❤

There is a dude in this world named Mike Olmstead that grew up in northern California, north of Sacramento between 1980-1995 and when we were 10 this dude was all about Metallica Guns N Roses and we would listen to music all day/all night. When i hear Metallica to this day I think about those kids in that bedroom enjoying life. Mike Olmstead that lived off of Don Julio in North Highlands CA, I hope your doing well my man and have had a good life!

James said in an interview in '89 that the band "scared the shit out of the suits and ties" in the audience at the Grammys. Pity the song had to be cut for time.

I’ve seen Cliff, I’ve seen Robert. But when I saw and heard Jason all Metal parts in my blood got activated. Not only did he shred that bass with a lightning fast and precise pick-technique that was formidable. He did the best backing vocals ever for Metallica. AND he gave a stage-performance NONE of the others could match. They (Lars) may have shut him down on the album. But Live he outplayed and outshined them all!

Holy crap- I remember this! I was seven, but my older siblings had me into Met, GnR, all the good stuff. I was watching this with my big brother... those were the days. ❤🤘

I remember this night vividly. It was 1989. I was a 20 y/o kid, living in Dallas with my husband and 2 y/o daughter. My husband had been listening to Metallica for about a year at the time. I couldn't stand it then and really didn't listen I just thought it was a bunch of noise and he had to go listen elsewhere. Lol. Anyhow, their appearance on the Grammys and the new heavy metal category was going to be a big deal and so we had people over that night all crowded around the TV to watch the big event. It was pretty amazing and I was all-in after that, especially after Jethro Tull took home the award for best heavy metal album which was utterly absurd. Since then I've been a die-hard Metallica fan. 53 now and back in Chicago and have been to several of their concerts. Took my now 34 yo daughter to a few concerts over the years while she was growing up. But that night lives in my memory forever like it was yesterday.

I absolutely fucking love how James barks out the word, “Darkness!” You can totally tell at that point they just let it rip!

As diametrically different as they are, Metallica and Jimi Hendrix (my uncle was a well respected studio musician [guitarist] and idolized Hendrix & Vaughn) and those two in particular - Metallica & Hendrix - were the reason I started playing guitar, my uncle was a great musician and teacher and taught me more than I could ever deserve in the vein of his personal style of music but I’m proud to say that before he died prematurely in a plane crash on the way to a working gig, I got him into Metal and I don’t mean hair metal but the Metallica’s, Pantera’s, etc. and seeing someone who I respected so much not only give it a chance but fall in love with it and the talent necessary to play it has always been - at least in my mind - my little way of giving back everything he gave to me and the patience he had with me. By the end, he knew more Metallica songs than anyone I’ve ever met and taught me so many riffs I could never figure out at that time (basically pre-internet and I don’t read music). He read music but preferred to learn by ear and I’ve never seen anyone as talented at that as he was. I miss him dearly and think of him every time I listen to Metallica. I still, and always will, have his 1956 Gibson he left to me when he passed away. And I still, and always will, rock the fuck out on that piece of art until my days come to an end as well & hopefully have/know someone worthy enough to leave it to as well, preferably in the family. RIP Uncle George.

That was the first time I actually saw Metallica, I was hooked.

It's beautiful to have the chance to see the very moment when a person, a musician, grows up trough his new experiences. This is what life is about, this is making your comfort zone bigger by stepping out of it. May Metallica and real music live forever.

This was a very big deal at the time. For a very large audience to witness Metallica on prime tv. James was noticeably nervous, especially at the beginning, but i think Lars, Kirk, and Jason really let loose (easier for them, they're not at the mic!), but i think James fed off their energy and just loosened up and rocked out with them. Kirk's solos obviously were top notch, and the energy that of course Jason was bringing and Lars banging it out on that great kit (and camera angles of the kit) were great. A big deal indeed. I was actually nervous too before they played!

Watched this live as a young teen with my Dad who, at the time, thought that anyone with long hair was a dope smoking criminal hippie maggot. I was sure I could convince him my Metallica passion wasn't misplaced but, man, that first half vocal performance was wince-worthy embarrassing. My dad was side-eyeing me like, "This? Really?", then James, who was definitely nervous and apparently getting annoyed about it, swears on live TV (cut this sh*t off from me) and it ruined any hope I had of conversion. Yes, they made me proud in the 2nd half, but the damage was done. Set my paternal relationship back for years. Epilogue: 20ish years later, my brother, father & 4 nephews got together and jammed Guitar Hero: Metallica. While the nephews were playing 80s Metallica on these big silly colorful buttons, I was playing a real guitar note-for-note next to them. I think that was when my Dad finally "got" it. Good times. Anyway, will probably delete this tomorrow when totally sober, but damn, this brought back memories. Thanks MetalliGeek.

I remember I was at a camp ground in the smoky mountains as a kid in like 89 or 90. Everyone used to set up tents along the gravel roads and cookout and camp, and this blond haired teenager (looked like Christian Slater in the legend of Billie Jean) probably 6 years older than me, came over to our tent and said here "check this out" and handed me a cassette of 'and justice for all.' Never heard anything like it at the time. I've been a metal head ever since. God bless that kid wherever he is today, he changed my life in a big way just by handing that tape over to me.

That era of Metallica was amazing, pure testosterone, a combination of anger, passion, and vision. Jason Newsted was amazing; he really fit in well in terms of image and sound. It's a shame about the damn bullying.

I watched this live. I was a kid still in Jr. High. I had to ask to stay up later than normal to watch it. They could do no wrong back then

I remember watching this on live television. They were nervous as hell and the tempo was off, the song was edited for time and his voice was wobbly and thin. Every metalhead who had access to a TV was watching. As described, once the song was underway and they had the audience’s attention it’s like they clenched the moment in their fists and exploded. What a freakin weird night. I can’t remember if it was a chair or a lamp we threw through the front window.

Metallica, however you want to feel about them, are one of the most influential Metal bands of ALL time. Inspiring bands like Slipknot, Pantera, Avenged Sevenfold, and so on. Metallica is THE metal band. The attitude and energy they put into their playing style even to this day is what makes them so beloved. This band has gotten me through so much through their music.

"One" was the song that got me into Metallica, in high school. Now 41, still the favourite.

I watched this live as it aired, as an 18 senior in HS. I swear to you, when the song ended, the first 3 rows of the who's who in music, were visibly shaken. Must have been 20 people silent with thier mouths open. Stunned. The best Metallica moment ever.

I remember waiting all week to hear it and sitting through the rest of the painful performances that night. I was sitting with my friends watching it and we were just as nervous as they were. The room was so stuffy and the looks on the peoples faces when the jam kicked in was priceless. Remember at the time this was groundbreaking and had never been done before. It was so awesome! Of course they got screwed and lost to Jethro Tull., but things definitely changed after that performance. I’ll never forget it.

No face in existence held more hate, contempt, misery, anger, despair, loathing, agony, pain and truth than Het. He is the greatest ever to live.

Metallica did a good job of bringing the extreme element of metal to the “masses” and making it popular without diluting it in this performance. There was already heavier shit out; World Downfall by Terrorizer came out this same year which was probably heaviest album of the whole decade

My dad heard me playing a Metallica song and told me I can't. I said it sounds like I can only listen to a full blown orchestra, and asked if a band that used a live orchestra was ok. He said it was. I then hit play on the Metallica tape again and he started rushing towards the stereo. I held up my hand and said, "just wait a second and listen..." and just then, with the perfect timing, "The Ecstacy Of Gold" started playing and he said that was beautiful music, up until the guitar came in on the next song, and I asked what the difference between a guitar and a violin was, and he had no answer.

I remember watching that performance back in the day at age 15 .. unforgettable, they are the greatest metal band at least for that time..also 5 years before and 5 years after, but not all time IMO

I'm just glad that I got to know this band during my life span. Their music had helped me a lot. I cannot be more grateful to a bunch of guys that they will never knew this.

This was an uncomfortable time for metallica and their fans. They weren't sure what was going to happen when Metallica crossed over to the MTV world but Metallica vowed to stay true to what they were and to their fans. Which is why they stayed the
