I've been watching your videos for some time and I am really, really happy you bring us content with such quality. Your explanation makes it easy to understand. We usually don't see much people doing that stuff online (specially on RU-vid) with such charisma and didacticism, and we can clearly see you enjoywhat you're doing. You've been giving classes here on YT for some years now, and we can see your channel is not huge or anything (we all know it is really hard to grow up on YT by teaching some language) BUT I guarantee you that every single person that watches your videos really enjoys it, and is giving his/her best to understand every detail of what you are saying. I'm sorry about my poor english and for making this comment a "text wall". I just want to say Thank You and don't stop with the hard work!
These videos are primarily here to supplement the books and website. Their experience making quality video content predates YT, with the original website having been host to probably thousands of vids. I'd highly recommend buying the books and or joining the site

That's something I love being native Spanish speaker. There are really few things that doesn't match the exact Spamish meaning. mou = ya (In Spanish)(Exactly the same and used the exact same way.)

"Write" is "scratch" not only in Japanese! The Latin word "scribere" (which has descendants in all modern Romance languages) also had its first meaning "scratch", and only later "write"...

I hate all those terms like volitional etc. I couldn't agree more. "Just explain what the concept straight and we'll understand." is what i want to say to those damn textbooks.

Btw. I was wondering about something. If I studied japansese like REALLY hard every single day, how soon would I be able to speak fluent?/understood very good at least. How much is there to learn? 😃 I am curious because I am considering to go there as an exchange student in a couple of years.
I used to use CALPIS in my English lessons in Spain as examples of "good or funny translations". Other examples were the British car Vauxhall Nova (nova in Spanish = it doesn't go) and depending where you put the accent, Mitsubishi Pajero could be something quite rude.
12:23 I've also heard that as もう子供でわない in an anime musical called Dance with Devils. It's a good show with fun songs. It basically got me back into learning Japanese again after 5 years.
Two things are confusing me right now. First is my sister, who only speaks Japanese, constantly said もう while she was playing a little video game. She didn't say anything before or after that. She was using it like a mild curse word. What's the meaning of もう if it's used all by itself? Second thing: I saw いく getting replaced with ゆく. Why would anybody do that?
I'm interested in the answer to this also. My wife does the same thing, and I kind of take it as a sign of irritation. When もう is used by itself, and with a usually drawn out sound like whining a little. I really hear it a lot for もうはやくして！You know, like "hurry up already!". But, as for playing a video game, maybe she messed up and missed a jump or something. Maybe she screwed up a little, but I wouldn't say that it is like a curse word.
Okonomi Sake When I said "mild curse word", I was trying to say "sound of irritation". English isn't my first language, so I am not able make some kinds of sentences even though I can understand them. But, I think you explained it quite well! Now, I just want to make sure, if I were to use it, I would use it correctly.
I've been following your videos/lessons for a little over a year now and have even bought books 1-3 and will be planning getting 4&5 as well. I've even suggested your videos and books to a friend planning to go over to study abroad in Japan. My question mainly for me is in your books when starting a new lesson you give us new words to review. There is the progressive form the kanji form and the English form. I'm in book 2 lesson 6 currently and is it a good idea to start learning the kanji form now even though I haven't started learning kanji yet since I'm not yet in book 3? Should I wait till I get to book 3 ?

I went through the Michel Thomas courses (awesome by the way, that and Japanese from Zero really make a winning combination) and they taught that. For me it's just the 'let's do X'' ending.

'mashau' at the end of a word could be described as being a 'suffix', as it is at the end of a word. As opposed to a 'prefix', which is a word modification at the beginning of a word. Perhaps 'suffix' and 'prefix' are British english words. (I am honestly supprised that you did not use the term 'suffix', as you are a professional linguist). I think that 'suffux' is a more concise meaning than 'ending'.
Is there a type error section somewhere? Doing ex: A6-2 question 4 "Why dont we return to japan together" and the answer key says ikimashou(to go) but shouldnt it be kaerimashou(to return)?
How would you answer this sort of question? As George gave as an example: Me: この漢字が分からないんですよ。 AwesomeJapanesePerson: 書きましょうか? Me: ?? Could I say something back like: はい、お願いします！
もう学びました（まなびました）! ^_^ oh... here's a random question... I just realized, that I said something where a friend corrected me a while ago... I said something like 新しい言葉を勉強しました！ (obviously wrong) and I was very excited that I learned something new... but he corrected me and said 学びました。 and all of the sudden my excitement was gone ^^ now... for the purpose of もう... do you say もう学びました or もう勉強しました? or can you say both? what's the difference? for me it's like "I already learned that (grammar)" vs. "I already studied that (grammar)"
Well, I also believe something along that. "manabu" seems more like to learn and "benkyou" like to study something in depth. At least that's what it is implied in the dictionary description. However, personally, I believe that "oboeru" would be somewhat more natural sounding, maybe? At least I've seen it being used with "kotoba" before.

Can 「もう行きません」 also mean that you're canceling an outing? Like, if you were going out with a group of friends and something came up or you changed your mind, so you said "I'm not going anymore." Would 「もう行きません」 be appropriate in that case?
About the 'Mou'-I've noticed it's really common to say 'mou ippai' to express 'one more' when ordering their second and further orders onwards when drinking beer.. What's the proper usage/meaning usage of Mou there ? Ah you just covered it with "Mou ichidou" just now :D I get it more now. Since it means "more" oftenly, 'allready/anymore' I see not as much...duh.
So the ましょう is a way to say shall? Did I understand that correctly? So if I want to say "shall I help you?" what would be the correct translation? Thanks in advance

next time you need to explain how much a chisaii tsu changes a word or how much accidentally adding a chisaii tsu changes a word, use that example of lettuce and let us.
I'm from Brazil and i really love this peculiarities about my native language (Portuguese), English and Japanese. Its so cool when you think about some languages and compare with other. (useless commentary), i just said that because YES.
Welp, I am not brazilian and portuguese isn't my first language, but I have been living for quite some years in Brazil because of my mom, and Jesus, brazilians are everywhere haha. Sadly, out of all the languages I know, portuguese is unfortunately my least favorite... Anyways, one example that I can think of that relates to japanese is the use of "ne" at the end of sentences to mean "right?". It's used the same way in both languages, it can't be a coincidence!
+Paolo Zambrana. Yeah ne at the end of the sentence means right? and or "isn't it?" That's interesting that Portuguese and Japanese use the same concept. I remember you from a previous lesson a while ago that George posted a video on. Just wanted to say thanks on a post I made but I forgot the question because this was wayyy back in Book 1 and I learned a lot of new stuff since then.
