The Very VERY Hungry Pups

WolfQuest

The most dangerous time in the life of a wolf pup begins just after the current WolfQuest game ends -- it's called "The Period of Rapid Growth," when pup food intake nearly doubles and they grow by more than 50% in a six-week period. Unfortunately for pups (and their parents), this rapid growth occurs just when prey animals are at peak health, after grazing on nutritious summer grasses for months now. The WolfQuest Saga* will depict this period in a new quest, which we're calling "Growing Pups" (because you are 'growing them' and they are also 'growing up' and will soon become young hunters).
In many parts of the world, such as northern Minnesota, this combination of hunger and healthy prey is a major cause of pup mortality. The situation is not as dire in Yellowstone, due to the abundance of prey in the Northern Range, but it's still a dangerous time for pups -- pups can starve to death and, even if they don't, they can die from disease that they contract in their weakened condition.
So in this new Growing Pups quest, you'll be hard-pressed to keep your pups well-fed, but we are adding two mitigating factors:
1) Because ungulates are at peak health, the meat chunks that you can pull out of carcasses are also more nutritious, with almost twice the food value as usual.
2) Pups are now big enough to tackle somewhat larger rodents -- Uinta ground squirrels -- along with voles and toads. These make perfect practice prey for your pups while providing a small snack.
That still isn't going to be enough to keep a big litter of pups alive. Some pups are going to die (and it's not your fault!). This is a big reason why wolves have larger litters -- because not everybody is going to make through the first year of life.
We know that some players accept this as a fact of life for wolves. But some players really do not want their pups to die, especially from something like sickness that is, at least partly, out of their control. To accommodate the latter group, the game currently prevents pups from dying of sickness when on Easy difficulty level. However, in the Saga, it's simply not feasible to have a full litter of pups survive. It's neither realistic nor accurate, and it also doesn't work in our game world. It gets too crowded, especially after a few years, to have a pack of 15 or 20 animals in a pack. it would make it impossible to balance the gameplay and could cause performance issues , as well. So it's necessary to limit your pack size by having some pups die along the way, just as they do in the real world.
So: In the Saga, pups WILL be vulnerable and can die from sickness on all difficulty levels, including Easy. But for those players who cannot stand that, we're adding a new option in Game Settings: Pups Die Of Sickness. It is enabled by default, but you can disable it to prevent death from sickness. However, to preserve game balance and prevent performance issues, if you disable it, then you'll have smaller litters. (We're still testing and tuning to determine that maximum size.) You can change this setting anytime, but changes only affect the next litter of pups, not your current litter, of course. We hope that this provides a reasonable option for players who can't stand their pups dying from sickness, while preserving the longer-term arc of the life of a wolf pack.
This quest, like the other new quests in the Saga, is still a work in progress, but it's exciting to see them coming together. Stay tuned for more updates!

* The upcoming WolfQuest Saga is "the rest of the game." Your pups will continue to grow into the fall and beyond, learning to hunt under your supervision, and then becoming yearlings when next year's pups are born. Time will continue progressing through the years until you die. The Saga is currently in development but we do not have a release date for it.
___________________
The WolfQuest saga will continue! Stay tuned for more news in upcoming devblogs about it and other new features!
We do not announce specific release dates. We will release them when they are ready.

And the fact they chose to add an option for pups to survive sickness! Just the fact they were so adamant on giving players the option knowing the helplessness (although realistic, and therefore their goal) would be too painful is so thoughtful. Just another reason the wolfquest devs are amazing :(

A separate achievement should be added at this stage in the game for pups that die of starvation, instead of getting the "bad parent" achievement. Between running around trying to get food and marking the territory, I regularly run at 25% health or lower. Like, if they die at this point in the game, at least give me one of those golden "you tried" star stickers.

I really like this answer to the sickness situation. I know sickness been a pretty contested feature, but I see why it was necessary, and I think forcing smaller litter sizes is a perfectly reasonable tradeoff-- honestly even as a player the idea of having 20 adult wolves running about at one given time is so wildly overwhelming! Iirc Puma ended up having over 30 surviving pups by the end of her life, and I cannot even imagine having all or even most of them ingame at one time 😅 Summer looks to be a challenge, though! I actually really appreciate that there's still the option to not have pups die of illness. I've been getting used to it more because I've been trying to get ironwolf achievements lately, but losing a pup to illness after spending days by their side and just praying my mate returns with food for them is one of the most frustrating deaths they can have, and it's the most frustrating because there's nothing you can do. Some people just get really attached to in-game families and fictional characters, and I am one of them. I can't wait for the saga to come out! It's going to breath so much life into the game and make replaying all the more fun.

Little tip, don’t wait for your mate to bring food. Hunt large batches of food asap when your pup first gets sick. Only sleeping when you have to. That way you can prioritize only going to kills to get meat for the sick pup. The other pups being hungry is fine for a bit. I don't know if this would be applicable to Yellowstone wolves, especially since large prey is more common there, but the Voyageurs Wolf Project also discovered wolves fed heavily on blueberry mast during this time (up to 83% a week) and that, while it did not sufficient nutrition to keep them healthy, it was probably useful starvation food for short term survival

I appreciate you saying that losing pups isn't always the player's fault, even if it goes without saying. I was recently *finally* able to play WQ with a friend, and every time we lose a pup, he's just distraught. (Versus me, who's played like 17 "years" in game and have adjusted to youngling fatality just being the reality for most wild animals. I'm not great at comforting him, but I'm good at keeping the pack up and running while he grieves, so it's not unlike having a lazy or loner mate in single player lol.) I also appreciate the accommodations you've made for players who don't want their pups to die. It's hard keeping everyone happy and the game balanced, especially since WolfQuest is less of a "play wolves with your friends" game and more like a genuinely sentimental family simulator game. People get attached to their pups! I hope you find a good solution soon.

Question 1. Are wolf pups at this stage no longer at risk for getting hunted and killed by eagles/bears/cougars/cyotes/rival wolf packs? Aka you no longer need to protect them and can contribute more energy into keeping the pack fed and territory upheld? Or are the attacks limited? Like for example cougars or cyotes bears and eagles will no longer try for your pups cause there bigger and stronger but rival wolves can still come in and attack yearlings to weaken the pack? Question 2. Have the game developers considered making pup stage playable for players after the saga is complete? It’s not for growth benefits but just more immersion so instead of starting as a 2 yr old dispersal maybe you can start as a pup born in a pack and try to compete with your siblings to survive into adulthood then choose if you wanna be dispersed or a subordinate in the pack each choice having drawbacks and benefits for example as a Sub you won’t have your own pups or may compete with starving but you can contribute to caring and guarding pups from the alphas and having a home territory. But if you choose to disperse you can’t stay in your home territory and need to leave/migrate and got all the responsibility on yourself now Question 3. When the game is fully complete is the possibility of playing as a different animal in the table for the next step?? Like for example the same game/maps/seasons/animals but instead your surviving as an elk or wolverine or moose or cougar?

I can't see myself using the feature (I love drama) but I was getting a little worried about people or even myself getting frustrated with deaths that are mostly out of their control, espically since at this point in the game many players are attached to their pups. Hopefully we can still choose to grow up pups into playable wolves at the end of summer, it’s a good way to be able to play as the pups you want and hunt hidden coats and still be able to chill with the reality of this mortality period. Much less stressful that way. It’s not like there isn’t precedent for it either for pups you grow up but then their younger selves die later in the save. I know I would be under a LOT of stress if I had to deal with the growing period where I could see a lucky pup who managed to roll a hidden coat and know RNG could take it away from me and deny me that coat unlock at any time

idk if this is a good idea, but maybe a happy compromise to limit sizes of packs is to come up with creative ways for pups to go "missing" instead of outright dying? A little bit of censorship and fun can go a long way. A family friendly mode! It can be easy to code too; random roll to determine which pups go "missing", and random roll to determine which "flavor text" to give. Maybe community members can even suggest random events like this to add to the charm and silliness. We can still keep the same litter sizes and generation, but in this "family friendly mode", a random number of the pups will "go missing" for various creative reasons. "Pup1, Pup2, Pup3 & Pup4 all went on a road trip together!" "Pup 5 and Pup 6 were adopted by local researchers and taken to a wildlife sanctuary." "Pup 7 went on an adventure with another pup from -rival pack-!" "Pup 8 and 9 joined a pack of wild dogs in town and was adopted by humans!" It's not realistic sure, but neither is having all of the pups survive, so people who want this mode already aren't expecting realism. It might clash with the tone of the game though lol Either way- good luck on this one! Makes perfect sense and I'm excited to see how you end up balancing it.

I personally disagree with this. With all due respect, I am honestly very tired of all the censorship lately just because some parents are too lazy to be responsible for their own children on the internet, and then we all suffer for it. Yes, child safety is important, but parental controls exist, and should be properly utilized instead of just letting them loose in the wide expanse of the internet and making us pay the price just because they wandered somewhere they shouldn't. That aside, like you also mentioned, it takes away the realism aspect, and WolfQuest, even in the past has talked about this. Nature is often brutal, that is just a fact. To remove that removes the realism entirely. And the pups disappearing in that way gives me the same vibes as the people who kept asking the wolfquest team to have options for "purple fur and disclaimers". Iykyk. Or watch the Part One of "WolfQuest: Wildest Dreams" on the channel. The fact they're making death from illness an option is very generous, and i appreciate it. But seriously, we do not need more censorship.

@@Bonniethebunny yeah it's not a fantastic idea- maybe someone can think of something better. I would like to point out that no one is taking anything away from you, I was only proposing this as an alternate option. Not the main feature. Hence why it's a low-effort idea that boils down to "despawn & flavor text." All ya gotta do to not participate is just... not participate! Just like how mate permadeath mode is an option despite how unrealistic that can be as well. But you're still right; my silly idea kinda goes against realism, and might be a bit of a cop out. I'm sure the devs will come up with something better :)

What's truly amazing is just how fast the work on the saga is going. Great job, guys! I do have one question about the saga; after your wolf dies for one reason or another, what happens to the pack you've built up? Does it all end in that save file, or do you get to choose one of your pups as the new breeder? I don't really know how it works in the wild, but I think being able to continue on that save file and not erasing all that work would be awesome.

I do have two questions. 1) Will the pups be nomadic with the parents at this point, or will they still be at the rendezvous site? 2) Will the sickness/starvation situation affect runts worse than the rest of the pups?

so what i'm getting from this is if we get a litter that's too big, the game is gonna automatically kill them off with sickness at some point? no matter how well taken care that pup is? 😭 that's a little bit depressing

i think its cool how balanced the game is going to turn out, because you are still intended to have more generations, therefore if some pups die during the first year, next year you will have more anyway. its just the circle of life. also mitigates having a huge pack to take care of during the first year. very realistic
