Is there a school that these people go to to learn how to do these things? I mean, historically accurate replicas of ancient hairstyles sounds like it could be a college course...
@DenTweed

She figured it all on her own, before her historians thought those hairstyles couldn't be anything else than wigs but she figured it out how they would have done it with the tools at the time. Janet Stephens went from hairdresser to hairstyle archaeologist and is the first person to figure out and recreate this hairstyle.

Rachel G. (student) watched The Hairstyles of Faustina the Younger with me last year and came to school the next day having replicated the style. I love Stephens' work for her clear directions and accurate use of sources (the historical tidbits are a bonus) but what I love most is that she's showing how to find and use evidence.

Very complicated but nonetheless amazing! I wonder if the 'do was also to show the rank of a Vestal since the complex style might necessitate servants to create it for such busy women as those priestesses.

This was really interesting. Nice historical perspective of a subject not normally covered. I will look forward to more of Ms. Stephens videos.

You have no idea how excited I was to see this! I am writing a story about a Vestal and to see was inspiring.

Please write the book with CDS of the hairstyles, as I just love your work. As a historian with long hair, I do appreciate these so much!

I REALLY want to congratulate you on such a nice video, the only problem is that you've stolen every second of it from Janet Stephens herself. The ORIGINAL VIDEO is called: Vestal Hairdressing: recreating the "Seni Crines" By the channel: Janet Stephens Same time stamp btw, if anyone is looking for it and wants to give her the much-deserved view Before anyone asks, I did check the descriptions and ENTIRE comment sections of BOTH videos, and found no evidence of collaboration or agreement of any kind. If you guys just chose to not disclose that, and this somehow magically ISN'T blatant violation of RU-vid's rules and regulations, then I apologize for my mistake. However, I highly doubt this and so recommend taking this video down and replacing it with an apology to Janet and linking to her channel. P.S. So sorry if this seemed condescending or excessively rude to some people, I can never tell how my tone seems in writing.

As per the cornrow part, you need to explain how to do that. It's different from a regular braid and nobody can figure it out without some instruction.

complicated but I suppose people didn't wash their hair that often back then, also they'd have had servants to help with the hair. apparently complicated hair styles were a sign of high status in ancient and medieval Europe, since peasants didn't have time or servants for it

You would have had such a good time watching my Italian grandmas do their hair, all braiding and wrapping. Very much less intricate than the Vestal virgins' but totally related.

how are the braids fastened at the ends?
@suechef9026

Fascinating, but the process and finished "do" looks painful (I was forced into braids as a little girl by my Italian-American mother, and also had many severe haircuts by my Sicilian father, a barber). How long do you suppose the hair was kept in this very controlled fashion before being disassembled and washed? Is there a symbolic reason for 6 braids? And why a spear tip to part the hair at the start? (I've also watched your video about the similar hair style of Roman brides.) I've read a lot about the Vestals but nothing about their hair and veils so I'm glad you, Ms Stephens, have researched this topic.

So....you essentially just lifted Janet Stephens's video from her channel without credit (and likely without permission)? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eA9JYWh1r7U.html

@@thebookwyrmslair6757 yeah and they literally GIVE her credit in the description. Not to mention the article this is originally linked to names and gives her credit too. And without knowing what went on behind the scenes, you're assuming she never gave them permission to use her video when she *probably* did, seeing as it's been *7 years* and this video is STILL up, and wasn't reported by her or taken down lmao. She was interviewed for the news article that links to this video so I'm pretty sure she knows about it. But you do you ig ✌🏻

@@tenshimoon The "credit", as you call it, wasn't up when the video was first posted to this channel 7 years ago, not until within the past year. So shove off with your smarmy BS. Jesus.
