The Viaduct that was Abandoned before it was open! (Nearly).

We wanted to tell the Story of Ingleton Railway Viaduct. Mainly because it's a great example of the often bizarre world of railway building in the 1800's. The rivalries between Railway Companies often led to many great architectural achievements, but also it led to some very strange stories.
Its just a short one this week but next week should be back to normal with an #EveryDisusedStation.
Apologies:
1) This was an crazy windy day and the vast majority of my editing time has been trying to cut that out!
2) We haven't done a short video in a while now, but we don't want stop doing them from time to time. So hopefully this is a little enjoyable one for you.

Some more abandoned railway suggestions from NW England Paul; 1) The Eden Valley Railway - from Penrith to Appleby and Kirkby Stephen East. This line was joined at the last station by a line from Tebay, with the combined route then becoming the famous Stainmore Line, which climbed over the Pennines to Barnard Castle (where the branch line from Middleton-in-Teesdale joined it), then continued on to Darlington. There are preservation sites at Warcop and Kirkby Stephen East stations, as the Eden Valley Railway Society intends to re-open/re-build the section between Appleby and Kirkby Stephen East as a heritage line. The spectacular Smardale viaduct, on the Tebay - Kirkby Stephen East line, can be visited on foot. 2) The NER Haltwhistle - Alston Branch - closed in the 1970's, part of the route is now occupied by the 2ft gauge South Tyndale Railway, between Alston and Slaggyford. The rest of it is partly a footpath, including the spectacular Lambley Viaduct, and one day it should carry trains again, as the STR wants to extend their line all the way to Haltwhistle. 3) The western end of the Wensleydale railway, between Redmire and Garsdale (on the Settle - Carlisle line). This section includes a tunnel at Mossdale Head which can be visited on foot. 4) The Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith railway - from Penrith across the Northern Lakes to Keswick, Cockermouth and Workington. Part of this line, between Keswick and Threlkeld, is a public walking route. 5) The Foxfield - Coniston branch, part of which can be walked between Coniston and Torver. 6) The Plumpton Junction - Lakeside branch - the top 3 & 1/2 miles survives as the preserved Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, but the rest is abandoned although clear traces can be seen at Haverthwaite village. The only other intermediate station - at Greenodd - was once used by Arthur Ransome and his family when they spent his childhood holidays at Nibthwaite, at the southern end of Coniston Water. 40 years later, his memories of these holidays would inspire his classic "Swallows and Amazons" children's books..... Little trace of Greenodd station can now be seen as it was demolished to make way for the A590 trunk road in the 1970's, which also severed the Lakeside to Haverthwaite section from the rail network. 7) Lord Carlisle's Railway and the Brampton Junction - Brampton branch - the latter ran for around 1 mile from the present Network Rail Brampton station (on the Newcastle - Carlisle line) into the town of Brampton, and is now a footpath. The former line connected Brampton Junction with Lambley on the Alston branch, and was a freight-only line serving a series of collieries between the 2 places. Much evidence of it can still be seen from the A689 road, and some of it can be walked. I hope these are of interest?

Great video again Paul, the Caledonian Railway started to build a railway from Muirkirk to Strathaven, they got about 2 miles. They then said, why are we doing this and abandoned it! You can still see the remains of it. Both Muirkirk and Strathaven lost the services during Beeching. The Strathaven to Darvel only lasted around 33 years, it was built by the Caledonian, but they and the GSWR shared the running of it, six months each. It was shut around 1939, but during the war, they Royal Train was shunted up to Drumclog for safety . The rails were lifted later. A fair bit of infrastructure survives, but it's crowning glory, the Loudounhill viaduct was blown up in 1979. It was supposed to be unsafe but it took 4 attempts to blow it up! Ayrshire and Lanarkshire were crisscrossed by railways, maybe one day you will get there. Keep up the good work, and thank your lucky stars that Rebecca is so supportive.
@Skyeskimmer
@Skyeskimmer 5 лет назад
@@alistairshaw3206 The viaduct just before Muirkirk that spanned the River Ayr was also blown up and must have been impressive in its day but I must say the Strathaven railway was a monumental task construction wise that didn't pay it's way,sadly the case for many expensively built rural railways in Scotland..

Confusingly, the Midland branch from Clapham (the other Clapham Jct.) to Ingleton - the southern end - was originally built by the 'North Western Rly'. and known as "The little North Western" to distinguish it from the company who operated the line north of Ingleton and on up through Sedbergh which was the mighty 'London and North WesternRailway'. Paul very cleverly missed out the "London and..." bit but did not explain further. FSWilliams writing at the time of the building of the Settle & Carlisle line says, hopefully, that at Clapham one can turn north to Ingleton to make one's way to Scotland (as opposed to carrying on via Carlisle as became the case).
@Wulfbear99
@Wulfbear99 5 лет назад
Hi Paul & Rebecca I think it is worth telling the history of the failures as many lines proposed never actually got further than surveys. The Llangurig branch that would have been on the Manchester & Milford also might make a short film in your series, keep up the good work. Brian.

The Railway Ramblers have done a couple of walks to the northern end (access via forestry tracks) sadly no masonry or stonework was found just a cutting gouged out of the hillside, easier to find since forest has been clearcut in the surrounding area. The southern end is still as yet a mystery as it is a long walk in and was last visited some years ago by a member. Brian.
