Hi Dan, I just watched this & was surprised to see that we were featured in your video. The Hyundai Getz was my mates vehicle & we had to take it really slow getting it in there, LOL. We were up there doing a bike ride into Wonongatta. Believe me, it was a very cold weekend but well worth it. The hut was brilliant during the evening to socialise & keep warm prior to hitting the sack.

Hi Vincent. RU-vid has a way of making the world a whole lot smaller :) Your mate deserves a bravery award for that effort. I'm going to pin this comment...How was your ride on that trip? Cheers, Dan

Magical is the word!! Went to the Vic high country about 5 years ago and 1st impressions were just amazing!! Simply mind blown how much adventure there is to be experienced 👌👍some scary tracks but that's half the fun! As a 90s owner its good to see a 90 out there mopping it up along with my 2nd fav 4by the Tonka FJ love them too

Well said - there's something so...vast...and....magnificent about the high country. People have dedicated their life to exploring it and I doubt any of them feels like they have seen all of it. I would not attempt a trip like this solo - some very scary tracks - strength in numbers (safety and security) - 3 vehicles is a great number. The 90 prado punches above its weight, especially with Grey Dingo being the Grande - it has traction control features that make it ahead of its time. I've been with twin locked vehicles that are surprised with how it performs. I love Paul's FJ too, he's a sensible bloke and has set it up very well. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Cheers 😁

Hey Dave! Thanks heaps. This encouragement means a great deal. I didn't shoot coherently with the story in mind, so it was a bit of a struggle piecing it together - but that's what practicing is about. On future trips I'll keep the shotgun mic on camera too for more consistent audio, I worked out a way to stop if rattling on the mount whilst 4WDing - so its already on camera and I can grab on a whim. It's all bout small improvements and practice....Cheers mate!!!

Hi Terry, Glad you enjoyed it and thanks so much for taking the time to comment😬 I carry mu DIY pelican case fire cooking kitchen I made, and usually have a mini kitchen in one of my milk crate bags (jetboil, coffee, basic stuff) Maybe a pull out kitchen (or at least a drawer) is on the cards eventually - but there's benefits of keeping the storage more modular too...it often becomes a rabble though. Best wishes!

Nice one Dan, how good was that camping spot on the Caledonia River below Dingo Hill, it’s up there with some of the best. Jase is a legend, but I reckon he might of stitched you up… the high track out if Wonnangatta is a much better and easier drive, no mud ! 👍🏼 Great episode, got my Sub mate.

Hi Lee, so glad you liked the video and thanks for the kind encouragement. In coming trips I will probably do more 'talking to camera' as it unfolds rather mostly than adding the voice later... but I'm glad you liked it - I was worried it would be a bit boring! - I will keep a mix of this style. The Wonnongatta was the highlight of the trip I think, its such a special place. I hope you get back there. Cheers 😀

Great video Dan. I have not been up there for many years. I do hate the mud, it destroys cars so prefer to do it in summer. When did you make this video? How is the Oztent RS1 working out. Looks like it is still a very long package. Not sure my Suzuki could handle a couple of those water crossings, it might start to float!
@OTWD
@OTWD Год назад
Thanks heaps Michael! The mud can be fun... but it's very short term fun for medium and long term risk! My mind always goes to the sand/dirt particles getting stuck in all the moving parts and causing damage, and salts eventually accelerating corrosion. Part of the reason I like having an older, less valuable vehicle for this kind of travel. This was weekend of 01 April 2023. The Ozent RS-1 is bulky but still comparable to a double dome swag - and it's a bit lighter - I don't mind having it up on the roof. It's probably too big for the cabin, and definitely the Suzuki cabin 🤣 The appeal is the fast setup and packup and not rolling a swag each morning. Mattress is quite thin, I'm now looking at something extra to add for comfort. The real achilles heal is that condensation inside seems unavoidable (at least in VIC climate) - I don't have this problem with the Oztent RV5, I think its to do with the size volume of the swag and the type of canvas. I'm sure we'd figure out a way to get the Suzuki through those tracks 😀 Appreciate you watching, Cheers.

Absolutely great video Dan. On the brief awning topic, I'm having the same thoughts of replacing my car awning with a tarp such as that. But perhaps an even lighter hiking type one. Having a quick attach and release solution to the roof rack would be nice. I'd be curious to know if it's any more cumbersome or slower than a typical car awning to set up. But can't be that bad, I can barely set my awning up on my own as it is.
@OTWD
@OTWD Год назад
Hi Sam, apologies for taking a while to reply - I do commit to responding to all comments - but sometimes it take a while😅 Keep me posted on how your light weight tarp solution pans out!! I got a bit of a curveball with my vehicle being out of action for while however, I was about to remove the fixed awning to take down 10-12kg off the roof. Within a few months I will have a video describing how to set up the full size medium Drifta hexatarp solo/as one person, and following that I will share ways the 1/2 hexa tarp can suit light weight travellers. From what I have learnt so far - It's easy and do-able to have quick connect tarp option, right up until you get delayed reaching camp and its dark and raining and freezing - and you wish you had a conventional awning for convenience. With some practice though.... I'll be preaching the light weight option. Stay in touch. Cheers, Dan😁

Thanks mate. That was a great trip - I love Wonnangatta in particular. I'll check with him. They are 33" -sounds about right.
@OTWD
@OTWD 2 месяца назад
Hi James ! They are 285 70 17 Falkens. He has this to say about it - They will fit on standard rims (positive 15mm) but rub the body mount on zero offset rims. I have a small lift (ARB OME), but I think 33s still fit on standard suspension. I could go bigger legally but I won’t because that would make the gearing too tall and adds too much stress to everything. An FJ on 33s will have similar diff clearance to a ‘Cruiser or Patrol on 35s.
