32 years later and after watching this race over and over, i can say that the Viceroy was the better horse that day and i don't think Milligram could have won.
Fanna brought Miligram with a well timed run,but George Hosang simply step out and met him,if they went around again ,Miligram would still never pass,the brilliance of Hosang was clearly on display,great ride

Depend on the distant and even then Legal light was better, he was the top weight carrier in A class against very stiff oppositions in his era. Dont forget Eros,the only horse that ever owned 3? track record at Caymanas park, couldve been 4 if his stable companion Milligram beaten him in a desperate finished to wire in a Guiness mile race.
Those who are tempted to underrate Winston Griffith..... carefully study the ride on the Bomber in winning that derby..... that horse won a five straight maiden race 2 weeks before the derby.... Griffith used her PACE to win that derby.... excellent judge of pace.... that was his greatest strength....he used it to win many many races
I read all these comment about who's the best horse to ave ever grace caymanas park In my opinion." She's amaneater is the best!!!!" N i said this with no dought. The only 3yrs old horse i have ever seen come to grade 1 company for the first time and beat grade 1 season horse for fun. Besides she can sprint as well as stay. She was unbeaten as a 3yr old. That horse has never been pleague by any form of illness whereas many other great horse experince. My God what a horse
Viceroy was unbeaten as 3 Year old too and only lost about two races as 4 year old against better quality opponents than she is a man-eater ran against and viceroy could spring as well he defeated the top sprinter in 1990
The Cicero was such a special racehorse...he had the ability to do anything he was so versalite...he could sprint and go the long distance...best triple crown winner..still hold the record for the fast derby ever run at caymanas park

Weight significantly reduces a horse's speed!) (4) A top campaigner with the longest career... retired at 11 years old in A1.....No other horse in Jamaica has ever done that..... that speaks volumes to his CLASS and LONGEVITY!....a race horse has an average of 4-6 years of peak racing strength

i shall return was the better horse at that journey of 6 furlong spectacular one was a stayer i gave bimbo credit to actually let spectacular sprint that day after they past the post on their way back to the enclosure george hosang shake bimbo hand i have that picture.
Yeah for sure as it was what the crowd came to see Bimbo vs Georgie and boy that finish was one for the ages and it will always be talked about even for the next 100 years. And I was privileged to be there on that monumental occasion.
If Fanna had gone on to gain international experience and learning to use his left hand then i believe he would have been ranked among the best in the world
Yes George Hosang gave Winston Griffiths some race riding lessons Milligram was coming to pass the Viceroy so Hosang lessen the reins so The Viceroy came right over to Milligram so his presence so close to his stable companion cause a distraction to Milligram and let him lose his running pattern and that was the key a brilliant ride from Hosang

If you was a racing fan back then you would know that LEGAL LIGHT won the the first SS that SS was put off cause every horse was sick coming up to that race only ZEPHORUS wasn't sick and rumor was going around that is ZEPHORUS groom poison all of the horses and I left JA 1990 and LEGAL LIGHT is best horse I see gallop I didn't all rest of horse every one talking about
It was legal light (winston griffiths) that won the first superstakes in 1978, beating arizona with neville anderson aboard. mento maid with derrick ramgeet won the following year, defeating deep river with parnell linton.

I was only correcting someone who states that Bimbo's ride in the 1979 derbyaboard Lucky Ole Sun had made him a household name in racing. Actually Bimbo was a household name before so I was only reminding of some of the horses that Bimbo brought down the house with that made him a household name.
The better horse 🐎 tell. The Vicroy was the better horse 🐎. Griffiths made the race competitive as if he hadn't move at the time he did the Viceroy would have been more relaxed and would have won much easier..
Miracle man won the confederation cup in Puerto rico won 12 grade ones in a row menudo only beat the same tired horse in caymanas Park all the time ..(she is a man eater) is way better than menudo( Eros )(the viceroy)( royal dad) are all better than menudo

Georgie Hosang the greatest jockey ever to ride at Caymanas Park. Only jockey Jamaican to ride at England. Two horses one none starter the other The Old Pretender with 3 zero at his name ran third . The following week he won with a different jockey. Betting shops full that Saturday morning.
One person's view was that Griffith moved milligram too early.... another said he moved too late.....in my humble view the viceroy was the better horse....the history of thier careers showed it

It was 7 furlongs... G. Richards aboard Royal Dad and E. Miller aboard May Day Boy... Andrew Ramgeet rode Sirocco. Royal Dad was winning his ninth consecutive race and in doing so broke Legal Light's eight straight win record. Royal Dad eventually went 11 straight. War Zone now has the record with 12 consecutive victories.

Battles with Gentle lover Quiet Riot Milligan and others I have a special love for that horse the greatest Jamaican horse ever I found out about his death in the paper how sad that was my horse.

Let me ask you this Ray Ray, how long have you been following horse racing at Cayamanas Park!? I hope it's not from the 80's, because if that is indeed the case, then you don't know nothing about George HoSang. Hubert 'Chinna' Bartley was one of my favorite riders, he's very skilled, and knows what it takes to win races. But George HoSang cuts from a different kind of ilk. He has no equal, and one who you could aptly described as an exceptional reign's man. Do you have any memories of two occasion that HoSang visited the park? Do you remember that epic battle with Hosang on "I Shall Return" and "Bimbo" aboard "Spectacular One". Or HoSang astride "The Viceroy" vs "Fandangles" on "Milligram". I don't have to remind you how they both turned out. Do you remember the times when trainer Phillip Feanny was having all sorts of problems with his ace sprinter Eros negotiating the home turn. And because he (Eros) was always going wide, he ended up losing his races. Di traina affi send fi di master of the pigskin to sort out Eros, and sort out he was. He took a copy book turn in a 1200m feature race, literally scraping paint so to speak and winning by some 10 length. Those are some of the a fore mentioned reasons, why I declared that George "Rat Sam Bat" HoSang is the greatest jockey Jamaica has ever produced, full stop!!

I like your piece Carlton Eyre, and everything is quite debatable. However, let me hasten to say that I've been around in the racing circles from Richard DePass, Charles Hussey, George HoSang, Emelio Rodriques, Winston Griffiths, Neville Anderson etc were bug riders (apprentices) so, needless to say what years we talking 'bout. Frankly speaking, there is no doubt that 'Bimbo' is an excellent rider, in fact HoSang confesses after that said race that, he'll always have to be at his 'A' game when he visits the park, because 'Bimbo' is not an ordinary jockey. And there's no two ways as to who has the largest fan base at the park, in spite of the exploits and achievements of 'Fanny' Emelio Rodriques will always remains the people's champion. When all is said and done, George HoSang is the greatest Jamaican reign's man. You noticed up 'til now I don't tell you whether I'm a HoSang fan, because I'm not. But when we see greatness, we just can't ignore it. As a human being, we all have our biases, and I'm no exception. In the early days Kenneth Mattis was my favorite jockey. right up until he retired in 1969 because of recurring weight problems, and make that transition to one of the finest trainers we ever have. Mattis in his hay days use to contend with the best of his kind. The likes of Author 'Daddy' Jones, Trevor McKenzie, David 'Scorter' McKenzie, Winston Ellis, Donald Andrade just to name a few. It is well documented that Mattis is, if not the only racing personnel to have made that transition from a successful jockey to eight (8) time champion trainer. We'll talk again.
George HoSang the greatest ever Jamaican jockey in my opinion. I am from Westmoreland I have seen Winston Giffiths personally I wouldn't say we are friends but I know where in Westmoreland he originated. But having said all a dat. George Hosang was better.
Fanna won that race easily but they wanted George hosang to win his late great race at caymanas pk . Great business.. if milligram had won he would have had 11 str8 wins + 1 mil.. dead even favorites 🤣.. but fanna won from a furlong out..
These horses now are nothing special, once in a while a good one come along but never lasted. The quality food and nutrition these horses get,they should run alot better. I really enjoyed these long time races
The careers of the 2 horses proved that viceroy was a better stayer.... milligram is a genuine middle distance horse..... further more viceroy is a more gutsy horse.... look at thier breeding
I witnessed Bimbo aboard Spectacular One inviting Hosang aboard I Shall Return on the inside rails to put on a show down the straight for the racing public and boy was it a show for the ages. This is what you called bringing the house down actually the house was blown down .I Shall Return by a head..Both jockeys celebrated while returning to the winners enclosure by holding hands in the air
Viceroy is the best horse to grace caymanas park. Sir Hosang is the greatest jockey I have ever seen in real life no doubt. Put any other horse and jockey in that race would lose
Wayne Anthony it wasnt the brilliance of Fanna why the bomber won the derby it was the carelessness of Trevor simpson that cost Rum talk and Phillip Feanny that derby what happened in the st ledger Hussey rode Rum talk went with the bomber and left the bomber standing careless ride by slicer that made him the only champion jockey to have never won a derby
George Hosang taught Winston Griffiths a lesson in riding.. Griffiths was there whipping his horse.. while Hosang was pushing his horse with his hands and heels..you see the difference with a great jockey compare to a ordinary jockey?

Andrew Spence you are absolutely wrong about that. Sheer Joy who's by Element out of Beauty was first trained by Allan 'Billy' Williams. When Billy migrated - Sheer Joy was put in the care of Norman Palmer, and NOT Paul Newman.
