This Derby will never leave my memory Its the most wonderful race I have the privilage to see Jamaica Jockeys are the best hats off to Chest-BIMBO what a ride
My father, Howard Phillipps, had the most wins in 1979 with 65. I had the privilege of watching this race in person. And I have to say this was one of the most thrilling races I have seen at Caymanas Park. The 70s and early 80s were truly the best times to see races in person as Jamaica boasted some of the best riders in the world competing at one track. Emilio Rodriguez, Winston Griffiths, George Hosang, Fitzroy Gillespie, the late great Wayne Sinclair, Karl Brown and Gary Richards to name a few.
This has to be one of the BEST Derby in the history of horse racing in Jamaica.... that was a SUPERB ride from Bimbo.....One of his BEST rides ...if not the BEST... He was a truly distinguished rider! Lucky Ole Son almost collapse due to exhaustion shortly after the race .....the horse was ridden for all it was worth!!
this race been talk about for years and we can't see the video these race's should be blowing up youtube..this will have about a million view in two weeks
Every jockey got glory in there country winston Griffiths rule is place also wats the difference Lester pigot never came to jamaica fantasy never ride in America so wat
The best Jamaican derby in my lifetime so far , most people don't even remember that bimbo won a hatrick that day he was 3 of 3 , mosselle, privateer & Lucky ole Sun
1979 was one of the best year for bimbo rodriguez don't forget he won the 1000 guineas with bold magic & the Oaks with True colours and the derby with Luck ole Sun
@@michaell3711 privateer was trained by the late nigel nunez moselle by the late jose pinchin, lucky ole Sun was also trained by nigel nunez that year nigel nunez also the Oaks with True colours ridden by bimbo rodriguez
Every time I listen this race I get goosebumps.....This was Bimbo at his very best...One of the GREATEST derby in Jamaica....it must certainly be among the top 3.... Bimbo won that derby....not the horse!
This is the best derby ever with one of the best jockey in the world, Emilio Bimbo Rodriguez. I recommend that someone, somewhere please find and post the video so we can see the race Come on now!!!
True word. I was 9 and remember seeing it on tv at the time. Very exciting stretch run with the first three horses stuck together almost to the finish line. But in the end the great Emilio Bimbo prevailed. Been searching for the video but can’t find.
@@delanharrison9023 ,, Fanna never showed what he's worth on the international scene. Yes,, he won more Classic races and has more winners than Rodriguez but he was never ever the people's champion. Rodriguez is. Bimbo even proved himself on the New York circuit.
@@delanharrison9023 ,, What i must say is that Griffiths was a gentleman and is deserving of all credit in his accomplishment . However,, he ONLY match skills with local riders,,,, the best of whom migrated when Fanna was had his greatest glories.
What you all must remember Bimbo, he was the first choice rider for Phillip, Wayne, Pinchin , Howard, Sharp, in those time a trainer would feel privilege to have Bimbo to ride or exercise horse them, go and check it out
Thank you, Roger Aitken was looking this race for years, like Tom Brady I had board horse name lucky Ole Son that won the derby at Huson Ave one rainy day in 1979, I an now the Sports Coordinator ar Roots and it was after listening to Chris Armond commentary on this race I was 14 and I immediately decided that I wanted to to be a commentator ( i do football, Athletics, Netball and basketball commentary on Roots 96.1fm)
If you were influenced by the Legendary Chris, l can only think that you're superb at commentary. This guy was never at a loss words and he inspired a generation of youngsters. When it rained and we would get grass straws and rain them in the water; let the commentary begins. Chris knew his craft and it always came out in his passion through the adjectives he used and his analysing of the subjects. R.I.P Chris.
Every time i listen to race i get so emotional, i always have to be by myself teary-eye , this race fill with everything especially the great Chris hammond may his soul rip❤❤
No other jockey would have won that derby other than the great Bimbo..it took skills, determination and strength to picked up an exhausted animal and drove him to a short head victory..undoubtedly the greatest most thrilling derby ever..as even today people are still talking about it all over the world..
It is a crying shame that there appears to be no video footage of this golden era of Caymanas Park racing, specifically the 70s and 80s. Very unfortunate and regrettable. Hopefully we can get more of the audio coverage of these races
Facts!!!!! For me it was best era!!! I came to America in 1980 but still followed the 80s era...but I loved the 70s era. My fav jockey was Fanna Griffiths and Charles Hussey. Georgie Hosang I didn't see much of because I was kid and he was on his way to Canada. But omfg, Bimbo, Chaka Chaka, Pumpkin Gillespie, Ugly Man Ellis, The Great Fanna Griffiths and China Bartley gave us the time of our lives from Caymanas park. Luck ole Sun, Royal Dad (1981), Prince Consort (1986), The Viceroy (1989) and Reca (1976)?!!!!! Derby was crazy! And who can forget Legal Light's tremendous stretch runs? I remember Harlequin, Hot Line, Jungle Beat, Holy Cat, Zephyrus, Ole Man River and the great Tudor Wit. Whew!!!!!! I wish I could watch all those great riders and horses again!!!!
The greatest derby ever written by one of Jamaica most famous and most skillful intelligent rider Emilio bimbo Rodriguez what a race the whole world must appreciate
Was at Calder Race Course assisting when Emilio rode Torquois Tomahawk for Trainer Ronald Blake to victory.I think that was his first riding victory in the US. Cleveland Suckie also rode his first victory ✌️ aboard Fools Melody for Trainer Blake .Two of the best all time Jamaican 🇯🇲Jockeys . Also had the pleasure of meeting Winston Ellis and Kenneth Mattis at Gulfstream Park thanks to Trainer Blake my friend for my racing life.
I remember this like yesterday. I was told that my grandfather owned a race horse called Happy boy and my father used to brake young horses so I was a teenager at the time and was just getting into horse racing - I remember reading the front page of the newspaper the evening before which headlined, "A lucky Ole Sun is the top pick to win the Jamaica Derby" - Afterwards someone who was there said Bimbo brought a dead horse, lift him up and throw him at the winning post.
Chris Harmond is best commentator Robby there is no comparison only two commentator in USA that could draw the one Cali and NY no other commentator in Jamaica go and ask 20 person and they will tell you Chris
Brings back memories of Chris Harmon and the greatest finish ever seen on any race track. Whatta race. I remember being glued to radio listening to this one and then being amazed by the replay on tv. Love the track growing up. R.I.P my neighbor and good friend Wayne Sinclair. 😔
This was the race that made Emelio bimbo Rodriques an household name, lucky Ole Son,was pretty much out of gas 100yrd out, when the great bimbo, picked up his head and under his powerful hands drove his mount to get up by the shortest of heads at the wire,Chris Armond, the commentator ran out of breath, this was without a doubt, the most thrilling and exciting derby ever to run in Jamaica..brilliant
Absolutely not Bimbo became a household name winning photo finishes aboard horses such as Words of Rocket..Dracula ..Pony Express ..Kruger...also winning aboard Common Market..Tudor Wit..Charisma ..Sir Petulant in the 70's
I remember this race. I was 13 yrs old. But my favorite of all. ROYAL DAD. In 1981 Winston Griffiths got his first of many derbies. The sky opened up after the race. I named my board horse Royal Dad. Killed them in Sandy Gully Waterhouse 😂😂🎉
I was privileged to witness one of the all time great finishes in a Derby, Lucky Ole Sun ridden by my all time favorite jockey Emelio Bimbo Willie Carson Rodriguez .Earlier that day I bought a horse by the name of Moselle and it won...Soup!!...guess who was the jockey?
1979 Derby, Where were you? How old you was ? 🤣🤣🤣 politics was hot dem days deh, but the horse racing hotta!!! Yeh , a really exciting time with real legends. Those analogue days of horse racing were splendiferous, fabulous, outrageous etc etc... Say something 😀😀😀
I can remember this Derby like yesterday..Lucky ole sun had the number 7 on his saddle cloth and after the race Neville Lucifer Anderson lodge an appeal that the great Bimbo Rodriguez was whipping him on his hands causing him to lose the race..dwl...also after the race Lucky ole sun almost collapsed on the track due to pure exhaustion as they had to unsaddled him and poured water all over him to cool him down. Only Bimbo Rodriguez could have won on Lucky ole sun that day and believe me when I say that..a master at work.
Yes ! I remember it well also, even though I was over by the free stands. As they flashed by at about the 1/2 furlong I recalled Bimbo, Chaka-chaka, and Dizzy Punkin locked in battle, and the grandstand erupting like I've never heard before, while Chris Armond was blaring over the PA system expertly describing the spectacle… and BIMBO prevailed when they hit the wire. I choke up even now just remembering it all. Possibly the most iconic race at Caymanas park for.
I was in the stands that afternoon, and from where I was standing I knew that "Lucky 'Ole Son" had won, when all three flashed past the winning post in very tight quarters. I think it was a short head, by a neck - It was that close.
I was privileged to be in the stands that day to witness a real spectacular ride from my all time favorite jockey the great Emelio Bimbo Rodriguez..I had goosebumps all over and trust me seeing is really believing. And by the way I caught a winner earlier.that day a horse named.Mossell ...and guess who was the jockey?
@@FitzroyFrancisRockefeller I dream the night b4 that lucky old son won the race just as he did all I have was 15 dollar and I won a good piece a food..can't forgot that day
Years later, more recently in fact, Bimbo admitted that Lucky Ole Son had shut off at about the 2 furlong pole in the stretch, so he had to commence the ‘resurrection’ from earlier than most of us realize.
Greatest race I have listened to while in Jamaica. I was 19 yrs old at JSA in Jamaica at the time. I will never ever forget this race. There are others like when George HoSang put Reca at the front and won going away. All the other jockeys in the race thought that he would have run out of gas. However George HoSang tricked them by putting Reca upfront and and slowed down the pace.
My first time at caymanas park and I remember my first winner golden pegasus besides royal dad and legal light derby this one is the best with chris harmond the best commentator of all time we. need all races from the seventies & eighties remastered and posted on RU-vid there must be some at rjr
It's funny about 1984 the first horse I ever bought was Golden Pegasus and he won ridden by Colin Maragh. Years after I saw Golden Pegasus retired from racing and on the North Coast re tourist attraction and possibly rides.
Barring none Chris Armond is the best race caller I've heard and i listen to everything in the US if he had gone international he would be calling the Kentucky derby .
They must have the video of this race at a TV studio somewhere in Jamaica..JBC maybe..Still the most thrilling derby ever..even after some 40 years on..brilliant
I was there as a young man I think it was the strength of bimbo on Lucky oleson that kept him up to beat chaka chaka on atta boy an pumpkin on lover boy CES truly appreciate one of the best an closest up to now
I also hearing about this race too,n dying to see it. Now,hear i am,searching and found it,about to watch the video,up on there now for the few seconds,i couldnt saw the video, but listening to the legend,"RIP SIR",it becoming so interesting,i almost too nearly curse bd word, because i was laughing so hard on how he was commentating, very fast,n well experience, making it a oneofakind.🙏👏👏👏Am going to continue to listening to the race now n from there's time.
One of our best jockey IN Jamaica EMILIO BIMBO RODRIGUEZ AKA IRON CHEST AND WILLIE CARSON. LUCKY OLE SON TRAIN BY NIGEL NUNES. IT WAS A GREAT DAY AT CAYMANAS PARK.
I was really disappointed for not seeing a video of such a great Derby i dont think i will ever see one like it again because i was there Bimbo have to jump off Lucky old son as he pass the winning post that was a peach of a ride
aiken800 do you have audio with any of these horses Indian Flame, Arizona, Ramvin, Harlequin, Golden Sky, African Sky, Merengue, Common Law, Fire in you wire, Hot Line, 5 round specialist Willy Nilly, Vivace, Kruger, Vivaldi all trained by Eileen Cliggott. 70'S to early 80'S Era. These horse names should resonate with a lot of horse veterans. Big it up punters👊🏻
Thank you very much for sharing this video. I have been searching for this video for years. I remember the race like it was yesterday. Which horse did Winston Griffiths ride ?
Roger Aiken . Thank you very much family. Can you get the video? Also can you get some more classic races from in the eighties including the derby won by A King is Born? Nuff respect
The biggest racing fan did not get to see this race was in Miami . I had left Jamaica the year before what a shame I think I had seen Tudor Whit Sydney Watson win the previous year 1978.
@@lennoxfletcher3600 Thanks 🙏🏽 for that information.I being anxious waiting for Emilio to win his first race as an apprentice he rode Prairie Song for his apprentice master Fitz Crawford afew times . I think his first winner was Utter Bliss correct me if I am wrong . Great and wonderful times at Caymanas .
Remember this race very well. As a kid, was just getting into racing during these times and was cheering for Bold Magic. Bimbo would later become my favorite jockey. I remember the local Sunday newspaper featured the Derby prominently along with the Wimbledon Tennis final won by Bjorn Borg.
I would love to see the 76 derby with Georgie winning on Reca for Ren Gonzalez and the 77 derby with Fitzroy(pumpkin)Gillespie winning on Legal light for Billy Williams and the 78 derby with Fitzroy(dizzie)Gillespie winning on Zell for Howard McKenzie, maybe it will be difficult, any one of them would greatly appreciated...
This is one for the ages . Pumpkin was a little too late as was he’s a native and Bold Magic was way too early. The mistake Andrade made was going toe to toe with mr lsq.
I think 1980 Derby was won black night with fitsroy Gillespie capital hill second with bimbo third was thunder bird with Karl Brown karl Brown trow away the race by going toe to toe with eclipse with Winston Griffiths
I ask about it and was told that most of the old JBC recordings, the tape were reused, recorded over on, including the entire Ring Ding and Where It at tapes catalogs, so all those history are lost
@@peterlevell7234 I don't think Jamaica's racing authorities (?) has those tapes. It would have been JBC. I figure the practice in those days was to reuse the tapes because of cost. Maybe it was a lack of vision because I'm sure they could sell copies of those tapes for good money now.
