Imagine how you'd feel to have your every move watched, people thinking you were telling lies, intimate photos of you were shared with strangers, and your relationships with friends and family were being torn apart - all orchestrated by someone you’d never met. That’s what a cyberstalker is capable of. And was the reality for more than 60 women who were targeted by one of the most prolific cyberstalkers in the UK, Matthew Hardy, who was finally put behind bars in January 2022. Now, in Netflix's brand new documentary 'Can I Tell You A Secret?' we hear from his victims - two of whom join us today.

I love how people comment without listening. “Just block” they did. He made 40+ accounts… “don’t share things then” he hacked them, stalked and messaged their family, work, friends etc. “Don’t have social media” why should they give up what is essentially life in the 21st century, because of a few individuals?

Right, people can't even read properly... Except that I disagee that social media is ''life'', no it's only part of life for most people (not for everyone though, most adults can and do live without it). I agree that noone shouldn't delete their social media out of fear and anyway in their situation it wouldn't even help - but to equate social media to life is a bit too much imo

Just finished the docu-series and a frequent question asked till the end was “why?” It’s pretty clear why-he wanted to make others feel as isolated and alienated as he felt growing up. The sense of control and power that comes with it were the by products and probably compelled him onward. It will take his victims, like these young women, years to heal.

Ethical hacker here. It's pretty easy to find out who's actually stalking you if you understand how technology works. I think the gov should allow some autonomy for ethical hackers such as myself who want to help victims like this. The Police don't really have the resources. I could have found out who he was with 1 text message.

Feel for all the victims, but what I can’t understand is why he still has a Facebook account???? Why are social media platforms not being accountable in misuse of their platforms. He should be forever banned on social media. More needs to be done

In the US, where most of these originate, they hide behind rule 230, where they don't have to take accountability for anything that happens on their platforms. The government is trying to change that, as the rule was not meant to cover crimes being committed.

Social media is not just for family and friends, it can be used for business, networking, making money, advertising, raising awareness, inspiration - lotssss of different things. Making your social media private is a personal choice. No one should have to make their social media private out of fear of cyber stalkers. Cyber stalkers should get a life and stop cyber stalking just because they can.

People in the comments blaming the victims for what has happened 🥴. Yes people need more education around sharing online, however, this crime is on him. Your comments give, "look what she was wearing, she deserved it" vibes. You are victim blaming. And saying if it was you, you would have blocked him from the first messsge - if the women blocked him another message would appear from another account - blocking did nothing. Which again highlights how the responsibility of what happened lies with him rather than the victims. If you do a quick Google search to find out more information before making assumptions you would also find out that if the woman didn't respond they would get incessant calls from someone breathing down the phone. The stalking would go on for years in some cases. Take your own advice about posting online and be more aware of what you're posting on here. The survivors of this crime have been through enough.

Lots of people are lonely, traumatized, have mental disorders but they don't end up ruining others' lives. I agree that Matthew should probably have been instutionalized or at least got access to therapy but that still doesn't mean he's the ''victim'' as you try to portray him here. If you really want to be safe, you should do the following: 1. Never do a livestream/post that someone could use to identify where you currently are. It's better to post the content when you're no longer there. 2. Never post anything that someone could use to identify where you live. 3. Never message the person, block them straightaway and any new accounts they create. 4. Report them to the police.

I know him, from northwich. There’s loads of working class northern girls he did this to but their claims were dismissed by the police, just as those girls who were victims of Islamic grooming gangs were. They’re lucky because they’re middle class & from down south. The police will acknowledge their story. Trust me there’s thousands of innocent working class women that were not listened to. It’s why we want independence in northern England. Hopefully Scotland or Ireland takes us with them.

He hacked emails, followed her friend’s, family’s, coworker’s, boss’s socials, etc. it’s pretty much impossible to truly hide from someone who really wants to know where you are and what you’re doing in this day and age. I've seen so many people with autism turn others lives upside down because they're unable to comprehend the consequences of their actions. To be fair, from the documentary if it wasn’t for Leah evidence bundle he may of been able to continue. Abbi just seemed as if she took revealing professional images that she wanted to gain from it (financially), it’s just that he threatened to display them without paying, which caused offence 🤷‍♂️.. Hope all the girls affected have now reduced social media usage as a result. Top marks to Leah though.. she needs to get a job in investigation 👏👏

I no feeling being cyber stalked I had Creepypasta rp oc account and a girl named Angela kept following me inviting me live talking killing suicide I though she delusional so I confronted her and she didn't stop from there she created over 1k Instagram accounts so I became a different rp character not Creepypasta but anime it got me down I felt I was watched irl ahe made me uncomfortable so bad I wanted get police onto her but I didn't.....😢😢

A similar thing happened to my cousin a few years ago in Aust but all she did was to message everyone telling her facebook account was hacked and to ignore any messages we receive that look like coming from her. I think she contacted Facebook and they sorted out the mess, wasn’t complicated, no one had hurt feelings. In the Netflix story the police were reluctant to intervene, really it’s a civil matter, the perpetrators are nuisances and should be treated as such. However hackers need to be punished for hacking, the punishment needs to match the crime. I think the reason these people were targeted was because they posted often, had loads of contacts, detailed relationships between contacts, very little privacy settings, easy to figure out links, added their place of work etc etc. It isn’t called stalkbook for nothing.

It's more interesting how one isolated autistic dude can brake hacking security walls of most popular social networks.... They didn't mention it in series. After all, those girls were pretty much attention lookers with all that fancy stuff over sharing.. In some way, everyone must reasonably limit and think what he shares on social media... Simple narcissistic sharing and "likes counting" is also psychological issue.

I feel sorry for these girls but let's be honest this could have been stopped after the very first message. Its done by blocking a person, deleting them and/ or keeping your account private. There are sick people out there. Always have been. Thats life. Dont make it easy for them by oversharing.

Some did that. It made no difference, he just started reaching out to their friends and family. Making fake profiles, etc.

Yes but deleting social media does not stop these people, they either switch to real life stalking (which is even worse) or they’ll stalk your friends and family, which is not something you can control. These people are obsessed and prolific, nothing will stop them.

You obviously didn’t watch the docuseries! It didn’t matter if the girls blocked him he had infiltrated their contacts and was pretending to be them. He didn’t just stalk the girls he stalked everyone they had ever been in contact with. Ignoring his messages didn’t stop him ruining their lives!
