But remember, Luka's hype was nowhere NEAR Wemby's hype. There was zero chance Wemby wasn't going number 1, meanwhile Luka had 2 players taken ahead of him & was traded on draft night.
Yea, while luka still had a lot of pressure is different form what wemby is going trought. Luka had less pressure to become an MVP caliber player, the worst thing he suffered was people doubting his skills. Wemby basically NEEDS to become an MVP caliber player on the next 3 years. Of course personally, i would never call anyone a bust for not becoming an MVP caliber player, we are setting that expectations on him he never said he would become the next lebron. But as we seen many times if wemby doesnt reach that insane level there will be lots of people sending hate towards him.
@@brunofabiani1289 100% agree. At this point, you have people arguing Luka's not getting enough MVP recognition, but Wemby is EXPECTED to be an MVP player at some point. He's already in the conversation for DPOY as a rookie (very deserved imo), and people expect the Spurs to get back to their dominant ways during the Duncan/Parker/Ginobli era. Any failure to do so will somehow be put on Wemby, even if he's the only thing keeping that team competitive.
This is largely due to ignorance more than anything else. Luka was the best player in Europe at 18, a blind man could’ve seen it coming. The US really need to step up their development tbh
@@AlexBrown-xp7mt 5 years ago the average American sports fan, average NBA fan, and I would say even average NBA player didn't have an accurate window into how good European players would be. I agree the US needs to step up their development. At least now people realize top tier talent can easily come from Europe whereas in the 2010s it was perennially a surprise
I think it really had to do with the era(late 90s-early 2010s) that he played in. It was such a defense era and all of the guys who were winning DPOY in his era were themselves all time great defenders. Here's the list of all the DPOY winners from 98-2010: Mutombo x2 Mourning x2 Wallace x4 Artest x1 Camby x1 Garnett x1 Howard x2
Because competition in 2000s was insanee when we talk about defense. Maybe he deserved to win it once, but still, there were guys like KG, Ben Wallace, Dwight, etc, etc...
Lol Americans can’t accept the fact that foreigners are getting better than their American basketball players. It’s because they actually learn all aspects of the game and fundamentals. Most American basketball players are greedy and selfish when they play. Too much ego. I’m a Suns fan and I hate that they passed up on Luka🤦🏽♂️
Luka was the MVP of the Euroleague with 18yo. If a 18yo were the MVP of the G-League, everybody would agree that is 1 pick and they would be saying that is the next MJ...
As a Spurs fan 2018 was when Kawhi Leonard was forcing his way out and I wanted so badly to trade him to Sacramento for the #2 pick to grab Doncic, especially since Phoenix was clearly taking Ayton #1. Doncic was the most clear #1 pick since Anthony Davis, and I don't know how anyone could have passed on him when he had easily the best resume we have ever seen someone come into the draft with in the one and done era. High end European teams like Real Madrid competing for titles hate playing 19 year olds they know are headed straight to the NBA and yet this guy leads them to a Euroleague title and wins MVP.
I m french... so please don't said all european in your color comment...I expect in France we have exceeded this sort of comments!!! I respect Luka... But when you look basket ball history we can understand the lack of understanding about european player
Luka and Wemby are perfect duo to build NBA around right now. One a physical freak unlike anything we have ever seen, the other one absolutly dominating the game with his mind and skill. If the league plays this right, and does not try to force push some Murican players at all cost, this could be next bird-magic era type deal.
I remember seeing luka destroyed the whole euro league at 17 years old and immediately felt Lionel Messi vibes from this guy, like he was born to be the best basketball player in history, he is the reason I’m still watching the NBA , he is a must see tv Just like Kobe and MJ
I understand the comparison but there are dozens of incredibly talented players in the NBA, there was never anyone even close to Messi's talent in his era on the entire planet. You can argue Cristiano Ronaldo, but his thing was more brute forcing with sheer athleticism and unparalleled physical gene lottery rather than pure talent
Its hilarious luka has haters when hes absolutely dominated in the regular season and playoffs like only jordan has. Even lebron has had bad series but not those two
i followed luka since he was 16/17 playing in real madrid, i knew he'd be amazing, but this good? reminds me of MJ, i get THAT type of hype watching him play... just wish he had better luck with the team, his FO and coaching let him down big time so far in his first 6 seasons...
Yup. If only he had Celtics or Nuggets FO. Even just the heat's? Makes me wish he went to those teams instead of the one he has. Makes me think that Mavs were the reason Dirk only won 1 ring. Looks like Luka won't win 1 with them.
Luka is special and will be the MVP at some point. Wemby has the potential to become the GOAT. The things he can do on a basketball court... never seen something like that. 5x5 game, 4x5 with 5 made threes, defensive monster, crafty around the rim, decent from outside. The sky is the limit for Wembanyama.
I remember Luka saying before the draft that he would stay in Europe if the Kings drafted him. The other two teams ok, but for Sacramento I think it was reasonable doubt
@@jdrmanmusiqking bruh I know but to say Rondo is not comparable is wild af. Dude help lead his teams to chips. Without him some of those teams don’t win, he was a good point when he wouldn’t be a diva. Is he Point God? Fuck no but it ain’t that wild
This is great content and Wemby and Luka are amazing. One caveat should be thrown in re the historic 5x5s: they didn’t count steals and blocks in the early days. Wilt probably had, what, 250 5x5 games, and maybe 30 in a row, who knows
It's not just the blocks...it's the THREAT of the blocks. Opposing offensives have to change their entire inside strategies. Nobody has been that kind of a force on defense since Bill Russell, or maybe Wilt.
Spurs with wemby on the court - tied for 5th best defense. Spurs without wemby - worst defense in NBA history. It's not even a conversation that he should be the DPOY. It's politics if he doesn't get it.
The duel of Wemby vs Luka will dictate the NBA in the next 10 years. The best offensive player of his generation vs best defensive player of his generation. And this could go down as the signel greatest rivalry, matching Bird/Magic, and the winner will probably end up with MJ/LBJ in GOAT debates.
nice to see that the Dallas Mavericks have more blocks than Wemby.. Mavs really upped their frontcourt roster this offseason and before the trade deadline.
@@dsbeats5657well Dallas only got their two front court big just recently , and lively been out for more than 15 games , is a fair comparison still since team like kings , lakers all got lesser blocks ..
Luka was limited hyped, there were a lot of mainstream media saying he was not going to be good and he was over hyped trash or like you showed they didn’t even know who he was, he also wasn’t undisputed no 1 pick.
Wiggins and Embiid not winning it all that year in Kansas was the start of Andrew Wiggins downturn. Wiggins dropped 4 points in a close out tournament game and showed that he wasn’t capable of consistently taking over a game when it mattered most.
Yea Players lika Luka are very special and are born winners....I wish him a lot of chips❤❤❤❤... Great channel and content BTW.... new subscriber 😊😊😊😊....cheers from Portorose Slovenia ❤❤❤❤
@@parrqueee how many chips has had MJ, Lebron,Larry Bird,ECT....so pls take it easy, he's got the entire career Infront of him.... I'm convinced that Luka will get at least 1 or to chip in his already amazing career....
These Euro players are taking over! Jokic, Doncic, Giannis, Wemby, Sabonis, Markkanen, Porzingis, Sengun! Then you have this upcoming draft and so many european prospects are projected to go in the lottery, maybe even 1st and 2nd like Zaccharie Risacher, Alex Sarr, Nikola Topic, Tidjane Salaun. So much talent overseas, it's getting scary
Surprise surprise, it turns out getting professional experience playing against and (more importantly) practicing with grown men since the age of 16 makes you gain experience like nothing else can (no matter how undoubtedly high the quality of the college KIDS is in the NCAA). Luka trained with the pro squad of arguably the best team in Europe since the age of 16. Playing with Super wise and intelligent players like Sergio Lull, Rudy Fernandez and Sergio Rodriguez... making them look average. It was wild to watch. When he was 17 going on 18 in his last season I believe he carried the team to winning the Euro League. You add to that a mindboggling amount of talent, a certain amount of intelligence and love for the game and you have an 18-year-old who can instantly dominate the NBA. Wemby is insane though, hes not even European, he´s extraterrestrial. EDIT: this wasn't meant to sound criticial. I really enjoyed that video. Watching Wemby and Doncic highlights is just a joy. especially as a European. I really got Fed up with the NBA in the last few years. Watching the golden state warriors throw three-pointers really bored me. But in the last few weeks, YT has been force-feeding me NBA content and it has gotten me excited again.
That whole story about him being that good because he went pro so early is completely wrong. It is the other way around. He went pro so early and even dominated because he is a generational talent at the sport of basketball. US sports is way too focused on physical attributes and athleticism. No matter how early any other human being starts to practice basketball, no one will never be able to reach the skill level of Luka. Not to mention that he has all of the physical attributes and more than enough athleticism.
Luka moved to the NBA after winning everything in the most competitive league outside of US, he is a born winner and has a killer mentality that it's only seen in the all time greats. Wemby is a freak of nature, but he chose the easy way into the NBA, he went to a mediocre team where he could play as much as he wanted and the way he wanted without any kind of preassure and having plenty of room to maintain good stats... That showed to me a lack of competitiveness or will to win it all that seem off for a superstar. When Luka joined the Mavs they were trying to tank for some years but they had to change plans because how good Luka was already (admitted by the same Cuban), on the other hand Wemby managed to carry his team to the DEAD LAST spot in the western conference... how many superstars have been dead last in the league before even as a rookie? Don't get me wrong Wemby has potential to be a very good player, but being a leader and a born winner is something that simply you have or you have not, and for now he hasn't shown it to me.
I think only people outside of the states understood how good Luka was before the draft...I think there was more of a Luka slander going on than a hype before he got drafted in US media
Big man back in the day would average 3 plus blocks a game. For what ever strange reason blocks have become a rare thing. So its cool seeing a player finally arrive who is revitalizing the art
Kobe and Shaq on steroids and literally, the Spurs would be the perfect organization for both for them. This would be like if Damian Lillard and Giannis got to play with each other in their primes because there’s a good chance in a couple years if the Mavericks keep on under performing ,the Spurs will have more than enough money to sign for him it would probably be the greatest duo the NBA has ever seen him, and probably means this team what have not only the best defender in the NBA they would have the best offensive player in the NBA as well. It wouldn’t be fair honestly and imagine all the veterans that would want to come to San Antonio no income tax and you’re guaranteed pretty much a ring if they stay healthy
@@emmanuelmondesir8677never going to be a rivalry as they don’t play a same position and both can’t really guard both , media won’t make them a rival unless both getting the pieces they want , like wemby getting trae young , while luka getting another superstar big , then the rivalry will exist. If u just talking bout stats rivalry , it won’t make sense either , wemby won’t average similar points like luka every game as he needs to play a lot more defense while having his team guards to do the runs , Assist won’t make sense either , maybe just rebounding ? 😂😂
@@emmanuelmondesir8677 star vs star then is not rivalry lul , there’s so many stars in the league already , maybe u think less on what “rivalry” means in the first place
I went to a Mavs-Rockets game in Dallas his Rookie year, might’ve been the other time they played them bc I remember it being Harden Luka hit the winning stepback over. But I knew I was witnessing someone really transcendent, was cool seeing him live Edit: think that might’ve been Year 2
Wemby is DPOY for sure, the only argument against that is that spurs sucks and have lost a lot of games. Other than that he indiviually dominates all the competition defensively. The numbers he is putting up are insane.
2018 draft it was more of a mystery than hype on Luka. All mock drafts had Ayton 1st. Luka anywhere from 2nd to 5th. Analyst were comparing him to Gordon Hayward. There were a few though who knew he was the real deal.
I knew luka was gone be him cause he was a pro since 14 and was nice at 14 😂 just like Ricky Rubio if it wasn’t for injuries Rubio was gone be him. Rubios first full healthy season the mfr averaged 14 8 and 2.5 steals per game. Rubio was gone be him at one point but injuries man.
I've spent a lot of time pondering why/how Ricky wasn't Jason Kidd 2.0 and I actually don't think it was the injuries. The fact he was a strong FT shooter has always been confounding because we think of it as an indicator of true shooting touch/ability ... But I think in his case it was a rote skill he learned -- similar to how guys like Bruce Bowen and PJ Tucker were able to shoot 40% on corner threes despite not being able to shoot in a general sense -- and it obscured the obvious: He couldn't shoot or finish. Also the fact he was small. Before the draft we all thought he was 6'5" and assumed he'd fill out to like 205. In reality he was actually closer to Trae Young's size. But ultimately he never had the kind of touch, especially around the basket, that's necessary to succeed at his size and I'm not sure we can just blame that on injuries.
that clip with KD made me realize we have 3 possible great coaches coming up : Lebron = he already been coaching cavs and lakers CP3 = he's been coaching since the Clippers and possibly KD = he doesnt have that coach thing that bron and cp3 do but KD loves basketball = he knows way more then he lets on .
These kids don’t understand that statistics and real analysis is new we only knew he was a crazy good football player declaring for the draft after playing all over like Kobe and passed the eye test.
The thing was at the time of Luka drafting there were many hyped Euro players that did absolutely nothing in the nba. Even hear Dirk say they had doubts of will he be quick enough? If you look at previous years' drafts before Luka there are many names you have forgotten about because they quickly washed out of the league, but were supposed to be really exciting prospects at the time if you had a fellow tanking team so you followed the draft. It is obvious if you look back now his accolades were so above and beyond that obviously he would be star, but at the same time these other guys had accolades too, not as high, but it didn't mean anything and they couldn't make it in the nba, so it was still a high risk to see if he could do it. At the time, there were mock drafts that had him going even later than he did. The repeated errors of drafting Euro guys made everyone hesitant on if it would work, the Mavs were just the perfect franchise with Euro history and position to move up to take that risk. Even after Luka, there were some Euro players taken very high probably largely because of Luka performing way above expectations but they haven't panned out the same.
I like how they always say Luka is this good because he went pro at an early age. People.must have forgot that a lot of players did that. There are 15 players who were younger when they went pro, like Kanter, Rubio and Belinelli, Dzanan Musa and Yurtseven. Do we see them dominating like this too? Let alone the other 12 names who didnt make the NBA. Lets face it, luka is built different. Im saying even if he played traditionally like an american player would, he would still be the player he is today
U ever have a "GOAT" discussion (eventually argument lol), and there's always that person that just wants to be tje proverbial guy who zigs when everyone zags, and amongst the "the GOAT? MJ," "Nah, LBj,!" "Come on, u youngins may not remember, but Wilt literally changed the game in more ways than those 2 have rings,"...etc... All legit contenders, them 3, right? Then here comes Mr Zig, Mr "if u think about it, the 3rd godfather is the best," ...Mr. Friggin "the TV version of THE SHINING is better than Kubrick's," just plain ol "Joey LOOK HOW DIFFERENT I AM" Ass McBackbrain, with his "actually, the GOAT is a coin toss between George Mikan or Bill Russell...." NO DISRESPECT TO EITHER BIG MAN... but not even Bill, with his what, like Bakers friggin dozen rings, should be in the absolute GOAT convo, I'm sorry.. There's a SLIGHT argument, but he's just not in a Jordan or Wilt league--- and yes, that's despite handing Wilt all them champ runner up consolation prizes lol... So what's my point to all this? Well, it's Wembanyama. Going into the draft, if u know the game, of course anything can happen, but if you said anyone but Wemby would be ROY-- and I'm saying they said it NOT in just a "don't be surprised IF...," way, but im talking a real, cocky, STUPID, declarative "you heard it here 1st--- jerace walker/Scoot/Shady Grady Veiny Dick, etc., WILL be NBA ROY," manner--- then ur an idiot who would rather bet on a coin landing standing up instead of heads or tails. U watch the game. U see the highlights. U read the scouting reports. U heard the kid speak and saw his demeanor. Sure, Brandon Miller is killing it. Sure, Jaime is a good story. But there's a reason Wemby was mentioned in rookie greatness with some schlubs u may have heard of like Kareem...Jordan... LeBron. Wemby is a BONAFIDE, truest definition, of GENERATIONAL, "exception, not the rule," exaggerated but still serious outrageous claims "he's an alien," unbelievable talent that we all knew deep down, that the ONLY thing that will EVERRRRR hold him back, is health. I mean, I'm a Knicks fan. And after the usual feeling of a steel toe timb to both nutts wore off, and we saw just what Kristaps COULD do, "if...," you had a time greats like KD basically creating the unicorn label--- and DESPITE kristaps up and down career, Wemby absolutely OBLITERATED the hype, the production, the amazement, the anticipation, the GD SKILL, that Staps ever had, was believed to have, was predicted to have, and again, no hate, but ever will have. To put it in incredibly rudimentary words--- u take 6 year old who just started watxhing and understanding basketball, and plop him down in front of a TV that's showing a Christmas All Day NBA quad, featuring Bron, KD, steph, and Wemby, who do u think that kid is not only gonna be AMAZED at, but beg hks parents for the jersey, and say cute, whimsical, childlike wonderment things along the lines of "why don't they just give wembleyamamama (cuz u know he'd butcher his name in a hilarious way 😅) the ball every time,,dad?" Or "Why doesn't every tall person go play in tje nba tomorrow?" Or "How come these other big tall oafs don't just copy and do what gwimblerama does, Gramps?" Etc., etc..... Am I making sense? Probably not, but the KID thing is a snapshot of how a Wemby transcends the TALENT of ur average NBA ALL STAR, let alone just avg player... Shit, u may even hear the kid say something wholesome and kind hearted like "why is he allowed to play? He's a giant and he moves like The Flash, u should be able to play 6 men on defense when he's out there!," lol So anyone that u may know, that had the empty scrotum pretending to be a set of balls, to argue wirh u, "oh Wembanyama will be a bust, Miller is Roy, Wemby is just a skinny Yao ming," or any other flat out ignorant, uninformed, STUPID thing like that,,downplaying just how much this kid is the absolute personification of "he's gonna be a problem," you should allowed,,by law, to give him the ol fraternity "capital of china," BANGKOK backhand flick to the applebag, like when Austin told Vince "u have to bow down to Stone Cold," cuz idiocy and ignorance of that level shouldn't be allowed to identify themselves as an NBA fan. Quite literally, so long as this kid doesn't sadly go the way of virtually ALL the 7'2" & taller ballers, Victor Wembanyama WILLLLLLL go down as no less than a guy who millions will eventually argue, is THE GOAT (of course no one in the next 4 lifetime's will be greater than MJ,,that slimebag, soul crushing, iron willed, pile of NYC ANDDDD NY KNICKS dream shattering trash.... friggin GOAT sonuvabitch, ice water assassin prickbastard.... God I hate jordan....God I hate Charles Smith... God I hate whoever the hell was the GM at the time, I don't even friggin remember I blocked it out I think, who was dumb enough to trade away 2 pieces whom I feel if they stayed, we MIIIIIIIGHT habe actually defeated Jordan, when he systemically helped Jordan destroy MY Knicks when he jettisoned Mark Jackson (full disclosure, MJax was the late 80s/early 90s version of today's "disgruntled star,"so maybe it was inevitable), and even worse the BAFFLING, eyes wide shut, unable to read the room let alone the Garden, or the "how to build a team that can win without any quantifiable box score stats," str8 up UN-NEW YORK-LIKE baffling move of trading the JORDAN/PIPPEN ANNOYER Xavier McDaniel....and on top of that, CHARLES FCUKIN SMITH Was the guy they brought in... dainty, a tough as a paperbag of wet baby hair, thinner than Allie McBeal skinned, allergic to layups, up & unders, and EVEN FRIGGIN PUTBACKS despite being 18 inches away from a 7 footer, soft, mush mind, charles.... friggin... smith.... And when u compound it with the fact that Chris Mullin....Queens, SJU fellow Alma mater, NY thru & thru, DREAM TEAM member, Chris MULLIN, said he'd love to play for his hometown Knicks...AND we had a chance at mark price over the still great Derek harper--- but Harp IS AND NEVER COULD BE MARK PRICE.... Smh friggin Knicks...gonna be 40 years I'm watching them, even now when they're good, they couldve been better, ALREADY Wtf where am I, hwl did I get to a Knicks rant????
the thing i have with the DPOTY it feels as though it should go to a team that actually made the playoffs. that would be like giving MVP to a player on a bad team so he had to score every time and got to put up 50 shots a night. the spurs make the play offs, and he is a shoe in for it. But that is some thing i dont think should go to a team that isnt in playoff
Ben Simmons was a complete stud until his meltdown. He was arguably the best defender in the league, and he was a unique type of player you would want to build around (Giannis type player -- not as good obviously). So yeah, the hype around Ben Simmons was warranted and he did play at a top level for at least 3 years. Then he had his meltdown. The LeBron comparison was not great though.
I called Luka being absolutely unreal the year before he was drafted. Saw him play, chatted to him, was a lovely guy. Told all my friends, we put money on him being ROTY. Also put a serious amount of money into Luka Doncic rookie cards!
