Alarm bells started ringing when you saw that fence post with a bloody great piece of iron sticking out of it, just inches from his detector. Then this shiney soveriegn case comes out of the loose ground. If it was desert country I could almost believe it might remain untarnished but seeing as their ground is so boggy they can't dig, it would be black and rotted after 140 years in the ground..I'm not a coin collector but knew immediately it was a soveriegn case.. All coin collectors would know this... This is a con, no doubt...

Ive done this myself cause at the first dig the camera was not rolling (for museum purpose). Maybe he found this much earlier and showed it to the crew.. lets do it :) The silver looked that it been outside the earth for a while, clean and shiny. @connie736
@connie736 4 года назад
This could happen. The environment may be arid enough and with the added protection of being buried under ground, it is quite possible to find a relic in good, cosmetic condition as this. Precious metals, (eg., gold, silver, platinum, palladium) do NOT CORRODE, rust, oxidize or "turn green," in any way, without exception. Items composed of a base metal, which are gold or silver "plated, filled or bonded," will. Solid gold will not "discolor" at all, unless it is of very low karat, with a high alloy mix and even then, that bit of age patina can usually be removed with a vigorous rubbing. Silver on the other hand, will tarnish, sometimes quite darkly, over significant time and under the right conditions. That said, I have never seen a solid gold or silver coin come out of the ground, with any cosmetic issue pertaining to oxidation or tarnish. The only thing needing cleaned, was the bit of mud or dirt, trapped in crevices, that came out with it. In soft, dry ground, debris likely wouldn't attach at all. As the sovereign case was clearly silver, most certainly 925/1000 parts or higher and the coins were high karat gold of at least 916/1000 parts, they could come out of that ground, in that place, looking every bit as lovely as they did when they were lost in it. I'm not saying they did, just saying they could.
@connie736
@connie736 4 года назад
@guy c I'll take that as a compliment, unless you can point to something in my comment that is incorrect. Note that by oxidation, I mean corrosion, the breaking down, (rusting / deteriorating) of a metallic structure by way of chemical decomposition. Precious metals don't do it. As silver and gold are characteristically soft metals, they can be worn down to paper thinness by abrasion and touch, but will never corrode. Silver will "tarnish" heavily, when exposed to oxygen and particular environments over time. Gold will not do either. It may build up a bit of a patina, typically when of a low karat, (8 or 9) high alloy mix, in for example, a jewelry piece that has been stored with perhaps other metals, or exposed to air and elemental changes, over a sustained period of time. For me, in consideration of the item found and the environmental factors in which it was, the possibility of this recovery being legitimate, stands. Again, not saying it wasn't staged, just saying it could happen.
@connie736
@connie736 4 года назад
@guy c Yes, I own a detector and use it on occasion. I am not an everyday hunter. That said, I do know my way around precious metals quite well and stand behind my previous comments. I don't follow this show and can't attest one way or the other to their credibility, but I do believe that in that circumstance, in those conditions, a retrieval of that sort is possible. A high content silver piece, holding high content gold pieces in what I presume to be a relatively arid environment, saved from the open air, under loose, perhaps sandy soil.... Yeah, seems possible. I've seen silver come up tarnished and I've seen it come up untarnished, whether from the earth, rivers or oceans. I believe it has everything to do with the environmental factors and precious metal content of the item. I've never seen gold come up any different than the day it fell, unless it isn't solid and is instead, plated filled or bonded to an alloy metal. I may be wrong in my opinion. Why do you think otherwise?
@connie736
@connie736 4 года назад
@guy c You're very likely correct that the moment was staged for television. I noted from the beginning that could be the case. That said, I have seen a four hundred year old, silver hammered come out of moist, English, farm soil practically unscathed, having only a mild patina. I like to give it all the benefit of the doubt, because I know that in certain circumstances, when all factors line up, wonderful things can happen. I get why they would salt it if they did. Afterall, who wants to watch a show where a couple of guys ramble about detecting and scarcely ever find anything of interest or value, which we both know tends to be the case. Enjoyed the conversation. Be well and good luck in the hunt.

@philippayne4951

I live in the UK, The 1855 Sovereign was the first Sovereign in Sydney New south wales. The sovereigns were not cleaned but worn. The 1855 Sovereign, the hair on Victoria was well worn from what I could see of the Picture. About 20 years of basic wear, brings it into line with the 1870s, period which means its correct for the period of the old timer diggers, as these Sovereigns were still in use, before being changed to St George and the Dragon type, also used in the UK. The 1855 and 1856 Sovereign was know as the fillet head type 1, before being changed in 1857 to different style portrait type 2. Then from 1871 St George and the Dragon type English design portrait along with shield back types were used. These lads have not faked any of this, Australian climate is very different from Europe and UK, and many things can remain as good as the day they dropped. Also he would not of put an 1855 sovereign in with other sovereigns, and a holder, where it would get damaged. One of the lads is a numismatist ie coin collector the same as me, he would not want to fake this, and damage a rare coin, so please all you doubters out there, give them credit where its due, and stop doubting them.

Hi Christopher Martin Yes they got the peppercorn tree right..! Did you see the BIG IRON BOLT IN THE FENCE POST..when he detect the signal..! That alone would make the Detector go into OVER LOAD..! I personally know that 90% of the finds are re-enactments ..! Do you really think Rick Fisher From Aussie Gold Hunter didn’t already find those 10 and 15 ounce Gold nuggets A year before he done the show.. He had it posted on RU-vid a year before Aussie Gold Hunters made the show and they told him to take the real RU-vid footage down..! Go and ask him.. He had to put the nuggets back in a bucket of red soil again..let it set and re plant the gold.. 90 percent of the show is re-enactment and that’s the reality of the show.. They can’t have 4 to 6 film crew members standing around for days or weeks at a time waiting for the Eureka Yeee Haaa to happen because if you do Detecting..!! You would know..YOU DON’T find Gold at Historic Art affects every day..!!! Because if you could.EVERY ONE WOULD GIVE-UP THERE JOBS AND DOING IT..!! Famo59
