This video will show the history of northern Europe from the formation of the first Scandinavian kingdoms, to the end of the Viking Age in 1066. The full version will be uploaded to Ollie Bye's channel.
@@VologdaMapping You should add viking raids and england tour of vikings. There should be viking campaigns on the map.Dont forget viking conquest of paris.
Except for the supporting evidence like... FRICKING FOUNDATIONS FOR HOUSES AND LONGHOUSES AND IT MATCHES WHAT'S DESCRIBED IN THE SAGAS. This has been *known* for a long time now. What history books do you read? If they're fromthe 1960s-80s that'd make sense.
Lots and lots of research. I've been studying stuff like this for 5 years but this was just impressive XD There's also lots of sagas and records that he could have read from
That'd be difficult 🤪 But interesting! But some of the settlements in Mercia and York have been lost to time. Middle Thorpe and Grimsby are viking cities still inhabited today though!
I think it was where some of our most feared clans came from. One of our christian kings kept invading to convert your ancestors but they beat him each and every time XDDDD The only way he succeeded was by deceiving them pretty much. Trønderlag is very beautiful 🙂
@@VologdaMapping as always an awesome video! Would it be possible for me to also use this video in my latest project with proper attribution of course? PS if allowed I would use a silent version.
I especially like that legendary-historical group of semi-existed kings including Ingvar the High, Enund the Road, Harold Battle Teeth, Hrerik the Ring Trowther, Olof the Brash, Skjold son of Odin, Beowulf and Frodo III. Wuh, what a hell of a time!
Incredibly detailed map! Though Smålandia should probably just be called Möre or something like that. The term Småland was first used in the middle ages as far as I know.
Since there is a large correlation between Germanic paganism (the legends) and the Viking Age, do you have any videos on the immigration patterns of pre-Christianized Saxon tribes and the rise and all of all that?
I don't really understand where you get this about the Jelling dynasty ruling Uppsala, parts of Finland and northern Sweden during basically the entire Vendel period and Viking age from? The Jelling dynasty didn't even exist before the 900s. I can't find any information on this. Seems quite unlikely.
I wasn't aware the Danes or Jutes every conquered all of southern Sweden. I thought it was just Skåne, Blekinge, and the other province I forget the name of 😅 Oh well, no mapping video is ever going to be completely accurate. Depending on the scale and speed, some historical accuracy will be lost along the way. You are summing up centuries and thousands of lives up into a 2 minute video after all
Um, where was Cnut's North Sea empire? and was not England part of the Vikings? England was invaded & settled by the Jutes and Angles from Denmark, and then a second wave from Denmark invaded again and settled in the Danelaw, then a 3rd group - Cnut; and finally the norsemen from Normandy in 1066,
The so-called "North Sea Empire" isn't the real name of any state. It's a retrospective term used by modern historians. What's shown in this video is the way it actually was, with a regard for the complex nature of Medieval European politics.
Denmark used to be the homeland of angles, Saxons and jutes. They were displaced by the Danes, and the remainder probably went to settle with their Anglo-Saxon brothers in Britain.
@@eliasroos8 That’s because it wasn’t independent all the time. When it is beige it is independent, when it is blue it is vassalized by Norway and when it is yellow it is vassalized by Sweden.
Yes they do, a lot actually, I think the city Novgorod was even founded by Viking settlers, then the descendants of the Viking settlers and the indigenous Rus' founded the Kievan Rus' .
the first protorussian state (The Rus/Novgorodian Rus later Kievian Rus) is litelary founded by vikings who became leaders of the slavic commonfolk. The first Russian dynasty the Rurik has nordic origins, Rurik is NOT a russian name
@@rullvard8245 There were NO turks in the Byzantine empire. Because it has the same lands that the turks nowadays own, doesn't mean that it's theirs. It's was purely a greek empire
