Alfred the Great, King of the West Saxons, came to power in the midst of a crisis for the Anglo Saxon Kingdoms of Britain. Viking attacks had escalated into full scale invasions, and King Alfred faced a series of devastating battles for the very existence of his kingdom. In this documentary, we look at Alfred's rise to power, his epic clashes with the great Viking armies of 9th century Britain - including the Battle of Edington in 878, and his efforts at reforming and strengthening the Anglo-Saxon territories under his rule.

@subliminaljuggernaut7278
@subliminaljuggernaut7278 Год назад
from what i understand, alfred isnt called the great because of his miliary victories but because he was a true christian king. when he defeated his enemies, he didnt slaughter or enslave them as was the habit of the time, instead he gave them the choice to become his subjects protected under law, which meant that the vikings werent wiped out in england but instead became steadfast supporters of the english realm. theres a story i was told that exemplifies alfred: his army was besiging an enemy castle and his army had captured the young son of the the lord of the castle. it was usual to demonstate hopelessness of the beseiged by maiming of hostages. usually the son would have been made blind and tortured in front of the castle walls. instead alfred showed the son to the castle walls but rather than torturing alfred played conkers with the boy and taught him chess. this was astonishing behaviour. when the seige was ended there was no looting or pillaging, and the lord was allowed to remain so long as he pledged fealty, which he did with tears of gratitude. in later years the boy became one of alfreds most loyal ministers. This and other reasons is why he was called great. Mercy, compassion, intelligence

Hallo from Denmark . Amazing video . Two things. First : Alfred is the anglo saxon King . We know mostly about . Since he left writing, law texts and assers chronicle . Gotta love that he was a man of learning … And by deating the vikings and securing his kingdom . Alfred built the Foundations of later united England ….. Wessex before Alfred was the Local superpower in South . Wessex had conquered and opsorbed kingdoms like Essex , sussex and Kent . By viping out the 4 other kingdons. The vikings just made that superpower even stronger . Superpower that would eventuly conquer the danelaw and create Something called England …. Two: For me as a dane. The vikings are my ancestors . They are my countrys cultural herritage… And most historians belive that most of vikings attacking England in the great heathen army came from jutland …And since I live in jutland . Its possible that some distant ancestors were among among Them . The latest danish research has shown . That dominant hair color in viking was red hair or red blond . My natrual hair is dark blond . But if I let my beard Crow . Its has a red color. From my fathers side of the family . He had red beard to . So its possible that there are viking ancestors in my fathers Line of the family ……

@@Swift-mr5zi I know . I spent years studying and a lot of books about the viking and anglo saxon England . For me vikings are are not just something that you read about. I live in Denmark . And the viking age are part of my countrys herritage … I live in country that unified in the late viking age into a single kingdom … Vikings indirectly created England . Here in Denmark they created the country . Because a strong ruler named Harald Bluetooth was strong enough to make the other danish ruler submit to him in 965….

King Alfred was a true philosophy king. Not only did he free England from the yolk of Viking rule, he was also the first 'true' English king unifying the various English kingdoms under one king. And yet history has often marginalized poor Alfred to the footnotes of history. Which is a shame. This extraordinary man, king and visionary, should be celebrated more! Let's hear it for Alfred!!!

In response to the claim that Alfred was not the first ,'True' king of England, I ask that you consider these facts. In May 878, at the battle of Edington, Alfred defeated the Viking army of Guthram (or Guthrum). When he reached Egberts Stone, the 'theigns' (Saxon noblemen) recognised him as 'King' this position was further cemented by the signing of two treaties - The Treaty of Wedmore, and The Treaty of Alfred and Guthnam, in which boundaries were defined and Danish possessions in Mercia were handed over to Alfred. Guthram for his part recognised the 'Kingship' of Alfred. Therefore to call Alfred the first ',True' king of England is to recognize his accomplishments (a tiny speck of which have been outlined here) and to bestow a title which history shows he deserved. However, if you are looking for a candidate for king of all of England following Alfred's death in 898? Then that would be Athelstan. Alfred's grandson and not his son!!!!
@Darrenski
@Darrenski Месяц назад
He was hailed as the king of the angles and saxons, as it says on contemporary coins, but there wasn't yet a united England to be king of. He was overlord or bretwalda but it was Æthalstan who was the first king of a united England, even a united Britain.

Assar, Alfred's, 'biographer ', was a learned native Welsh scholar who taught Alfred's inner circle to read and write and gave them culture that had previously been lacking. Alfred was never known as the, 'great ', until this was bestowed on him in recent times.

This is a fascinating documentary I understand a lot more of our history, the origin of my Surname is described as unusual online but is indeed Anglo Saxon. Many Thanks.
