One of the most romantic scenes ever! Just two people who know they belong together. No drama . No fuss. Just that quiet knowing and understanding between them. Wow.
@@Tonycillian5 I think he'd have come across as overly sympathetic...On account that even the few off kilter characters he's played, he always looks like little Garry from Parenthood. Hence the mostly likable characters
bcos since this 2004 movie was released, Bryce Dallas Howard realised that it's all about the money and could care less about appearing on films that have good stories. she went on to have plastic surgeries and only cares about appearing on crappy movies like jurrasic world where she runs around in high heels whilst bouncing her fake breasts
One of the best love scenes in film history, IMO. How this whole scene conveys so much emotion with just two people whispering back and forth, the quiet sound of the night in the background with the fog, the dialect used, wow.
Agreed. One of the most romantic moments in the entire cinema history. Pure love. This scene has been with me since I first saw the movie back in 2004.
I'm amazed by how actors like them mastered subtlety in their performances. They're very detailed even with their eyes. For example, Bryce Dallas Howard would not just play blind here but would not even blink for a very long time during their conversation. I tried doing that stunt while watching and it burned my eyes.
M. Night personally chose her for the movie after having seen her perform on stage. & yeah, it’s really amazing that she was able to do that. It’s like the opposite of what Jamie Foxx did in the movie “Ray” which came out the same year as “The Village.” He glued his eyes shut
She uses that trick of not blinking for a long time when she needs to cry on cue. She demonstrated the technique on Conan a few years ago if you want to see it in action, basically she keeps her eyes open as long as she can to the point where they get dry and tear up. I’m sure using that technique over and over and over again prepared her perfectly for the role of Ivy. She’s got that blank, almost unblinking stare of a blind person down perfectly and as many times as I’ve seen the village she still manages to impress me every single time. I really don’t understand why her name isn’t brought up more often when people talk about the best actors working today
I think what a lot of people forget is that leading up to this film, Shyamalan was known as the 'Plot Twist Thriller Guy', and this film was marketed that way. In fact, it was honestly marketed as almost a horror film. I remember clearly being so pumped for it. And then....well it certainly has its moments of jump scares, but the plot twists are not all that great. I see why people may have been disappointed in that sense. BUT if you do that you are looking past what the film does WELL. Beautiful cinematography, an excellent cast, and quite frankly one of the most beautiful musical scores I have ever heard. Shyamalan has made some bad films, but this is not one of them. It's great, and super underrated.
I agree! If anything this is a romantic drama, definitely with a lot of tension but not a horror. I think it gets hate mostly for that, but it's very beautiful if you engage with it on its own terms.
I named my daughter Ivy after this character ❤I absolutely love this movie. My other two favorite scenes are; When she holds her hand out waiting for him, the slow motion and music😭 I get chills and cry everytime. And when she meets the park ranger, I love him and his character as well. This movie gets bashed too much. It's so beautiful, and the music🥺 M Night is a genius!
When I was 13 I went and watched this movie with a few friends. The way they marketed it I thought it would be more action based. That's what 14 year old me wanted to see. I fell asleep watching the movie. The movie is subtle and beautiful in a way I didn't understand then but know now. This scene is so relaxing I could use it to help me sleep. I never thought I'd say a movie putting me to sleep is a compliment in that it's graceful and elegant. The reveals in this movie are great too. I loved the end when I saw it in theaters as well. This is a great movie. I didn't like it as a kid but it stuck with me and as I grew it grew on me. The symbols and use of color to the diverse set of characters and feel to the movie.
And it happens at the perfect moment to right after he says that he will dance with her on their wedding night, confirming that he does, indeed want to marry her. It’s almost like a proposal. I love the scene so much and these two overall.❤
This scene is what I love most about movies. It is just 2 actors, there is no cut, and the actors are just giving such a memorable performance that sticks with you after the movie is over :)
This movie is a masterpiece. That most lemmings hate it because its not some roided superhero smashing shit doesn't make it any less of a masterpiece. No cuts people! This is real cinema
Fully agree. This scene & the one with the elders discussing why the leader sent Ivy (being a blind girl) are so beautifully done. One of my favorite movies ever.
@@elsimbololander it’s just a way people say “look at me i’m different and not like those other clearly inferior people who like superhero movies”. people like the original commenter feel the need to prove their tastes to others as being exotic or out of the ordinary, it makes them feel superior.
Gotta love the way in which the camera slowly moves away from Ivy and Lucius just as their lips meet in order to focus on the chair. It's very much in keeping with the atmosphere of the film. The community is clearly old-fashioned in its ways and it would probably be regarded as extremely bad manners to gawk at and intrude upon a young couple in a private moment such as this...so the camera very discreetly and politely looks away and pretends that it does not notice them.
I agree with what you’re saying but just letting you know calling him “Shamalama ding dong” borders on a racist comment, even if you didn’t mean it to be one
I don’t think many people know this, but this was Bryce Dallas Howard’s first starring role. She caught M. Night Shyamalan’s attention when she performed in a Shakespeare play
Something that never gets talked about is m nights penchant for long takes. Not just longer, unbroken takes, but often static ones. They don’t always work, but when they do it’s so unusual and strange in that singular m night way. I love deakins and his collaboration on this, it feels like both of their artistic voices are loud and clear simultaneously. Like the colors and lighting are unmistakably deakins, but the framing and form is all m night. I doubt it will happen, but I’d love if they worked together again
My favorite part is the tear falling from the opposite cheek. No idea if this was planned but it was great. You didn’t really know how emotional she was until then. My favorite movie of all time. The cast, the acting the story and THE SCORE! My god James Newton Howard nailed it.
I always wondered what he meant by that. Did he not know she loved him back until she asked if he would dance with her when they married? And that finally gave him the courage?
I came into this movie blind, so I did not know what to expect. Had I known it was supposedly a "horror movie" I would have stayed clear of it, as I dislike horror, normally I find them too stupid for me to enjoy. This movie on the other hand was not stupid, sure, some stupid moments, but those plauge nearly every movie. As a whole this movie was, I'd say, amazing. Not only was it gorgeous both visually and audibly but also gorgeous in the story. The love between Ivy and Lucius was beautiful and is, in my opinion, the best thing about the movie. This scene has stuck with me for a long while now, it is easily one of my favorite movie scenes of all time. It has so much power to it, the acting feels real, I hesitate to even call it acting it was so well done. Any way, I've rambled long enough. Time to press the paper airplane to let the internet display these words for any who may find them.
For a very long time, probably right after seeing it, I've thought this scene was the first part of the story that he wrote & structured the rest of the story around this scene. Practically every character's motives can be traced to this scene. In the years since, no matter how many times Shyamalan has burned me (quite A BIT), I always give him a chance. Because he wrote this quiet, intimate & beautiful scene
If thats not the ultimate rizz i have ever witnessed then i don’t know what is. I love this scene so much. Its pure, nothing over the top. This and the scene where she holds out her hand waiting for him are my favorites. Idgaf what people say i absolutely love this movie. I know this entire movie like the back of my hand but every time i watch it it still leaves me in awe.
Tell me what you want about this movie, but don't say that this scene isn't pure gold (And about his colour: for me it's dark red, or something similar)
@@naturallyamused Realizing that it IS in fact just a simple love story gives you such a different perspective. My ex-wife let me in on it. By this point in the movie you get the sense of them being in love. In the theater, when this scene happened, she gasped. She then leaned in & said, "The monsters are bullshit! This is their love story."🥲 🫨 And how could it not be?
