The Villain In My Head - Tonee Ndungu

Imagine an eager child who has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Dyslexia meeting a teacher who's key mission in life is to 'break' boys in the name of discipline. The boy leaves the school but carries the teacher in his head. The boy grows into a man but the teacher does not leave him. That is Tonee Ndungu's story. He shares a deeply personal account of the effect that the villain in his childhood had and continues to have.
Most of us have a villain that we have carried around in our heads for many years. The teacher in his story could be anyone in yours; a parent, spouse, teacher, boss... It is time to actively work at kicking out the villain in our heads.
Engage provides a platform for ordinary and extraordinary people to Inform. Inspire. Influence.

My Mr So and So was Mr Karuiki..... a couple of degrees later and he’s still running his mouth in my head about my being inadequate. I pray for the day I wake up and not immediately think of all the things I don’t do well....I needed to hear this today. Thank you.

You’re an exceptional human ... you’re eloquent in every way... from the cats to your superhero T-shirt to Plant sap to Mangu ... to start-ups and the wilderness of fundraising... Society thinks it knows... toxic masculinity is what we call men we can’t decipher while in true essence it’s really human toxicity that’s the issue with society right about now. I have loved your story, and how you’ve told it... I would read a book you’ve written ... Godspeed!

Tonee, I have met you before and I think you are brilliant. I, however, didn't know you suffered ADHD and Dyslexia a condition I also have. Teachers need to be enlightened about this condition. About Naivasha boarding, I know the school and my Uncle Mr. Wanjau was in that school. I suspect he is the one who took you through hell and I apologize on his behalf.
@MistaOscar
@MistaOscar 5 лет назад
It would be nice if he apologized himself. To Tonee and the hundreds of (broken) men who passed through that ...! Have him watch this, to better make him understand what profound effect, one year of his cruelty had.

#@Sammy, Wanjau beat me up so many times while in that school that I have lost count. But again he taught me well. Say hi to him for me.
@vincemulatya1946
@vincemulatya1946 5 лет назад
Sammy, your uncle really broke us. He happened to be my class teacher way back in 1993. New to the school, I will never forget how he caned us pre-crime. There was a mural being drawn using coloured chalks at the blackboard behind the class. He punished us as a warning of anyone thinking of rubbing it. This was my first encounter with psychological torture that took me over a decade to reformat to a normal young man. 18 years later I visited the school to make peace with self
@mrarntoh
@mrarntoh Год назад
@Sammy msafiri, unfortunately Mr. Wanjau was my so and so 87-92, He was my class teacher in 90 to 91 I reckon, he hated me and used to beat me like a burukenge, pole don't feel bad about my comment but we're all still finding ways to forget and heal out of NBBPS. It was a hell on earth surrounded by Nguna the tall thorny cactus fence that Tonny Ndungu used to write Superman in his arm.

A great story well narrated.. I can sense the pain of a brilliant child who was not affirmed. Our Parents of yester years were just doing what they thought was best to raise their kids but m glad nowadays we know that children learn in different ways... Especially the very super smart ones.. Tonny you are amazing and probably if you never went to that school you could have never achieved all that you have.. The experience called forth the great person that you are today.. Humbled to meet the brains behind Kitabu.. Kudos!

Listening to Tonee remind me of how misunderstood children are and how teachers need to be educated on different conditions that children may have and how to try and identify them. That Mr. So-and-So must have had his life in a mess to take it out on those kids. I think the experience that Tonee went through definitely made him stronger than he may think. With or without the Superman t-shirt he is great. I am also glad he has allowed himself to be him and not pretend to be something he is not. Great talk Tonee.

Every day their mission was to break us. I too went to that school for six years. Violence that was meted out on us in the name of discipline. 'In understanding be men" was the school motto. In some 'mind' the harsh conditions were to mold men. I think it killed the man in the boy but by His wounds we are healed.
