The Violent Focus of Francis Bacon

Some lessons from the life of painter Francis Bacon. I think the unique force and violence of Bacon’s paintings derive partially from the ascetic Lebenswelt he cultivated. Into his small but chaotic atelier, Bacon allowed almost nothing other than painting supplies and his varied source materials: Photographs, books, magazines, etc. He locked himself into an otherwise closed circuit of his own reflections. He would even write handwritten notes to himself about what he should be thinking about.

This was outstanding. The phrase “guardrails for attention” stood out to me, and the overall emphasis on intentionally creating a self-referencing world that brings everything back to the work is so critical. The other phrase I loved was “a hermetically sealed pressure-cooker,” and I very much resonate with the idea of “engineering the smallest environment possible” to maintain a strong orbit around the vision. Great work, Justin, really great.

regarding the "thinking notes to himself" thing, I'm sure fiction writers (including myself, but I know many others) do something similar. When you write some let's say sad/pessimistic passage in the book or whatever you work on, you want to purposefully read something similar in your free time - to get your thinking right in this "sad way". I tend to read Bernhard, Beckett and some polish writers like Wojciech Gunia. It's also good to surround yourself with sad/pessimistic things, but you don't have to do it artificially. I'm also pretty sure the same thing works for actors. They tend to remember real-life events to get to the specific emotions, and to get their thinking in a with this specific emotion, and in effect - behave in a certain way they want to. But these Bacon's notes are like another level. Interesting stuff.

@@reinarforeman6518 violently living out your ethic, irrespective of outside forces. i dont want to assume where your heads at with this ^^, but I would argue that terms commonly used in a particular spheres (political doxa) do not preclude use to other spheres (private life).

9:48 I disagree : in order to be seen and exposed, he had to get out of his world, and to get to his stature, he had to work with galerists and be civil etc. Yet, he kept his raw talent. Check art brut, these guys truly did not give a shit about the outside world : nobody knew about them until they were dead. What a shame ! But also shows that we should not fantasize that much the habits of Bacon. TO be tried, I agree, but let's keep this real

While I can certainly apply some of these insights profitably to my life this is definitely not the way I want to live my life. I wish to be present for it…
