Euphoria is often painted as "unrealistic", but realism isn't the point! The visual, emotional language of Euphoria is used to communicate the grand, urgent and sometimes demonic feelings of being young.

FOR REAL!!!! I felt so terrible for him and everyone who ever had to go through a one sided relationship like that. *From what we’ve seen of him so far* He was sweet and seemed like a kind person overall, especially with how he treated Kat. Yet she had the audacity to gaslight him and not the decency to properly break up with him. (Note: Kat’s story has positives, but how she treated Ethan was a big no for me) Also I loved how happy/ excited Ethan looked in Lexie’s play, he seemed so confident and comfortable on stage. Not to mention he seemed secure being in drag and clowning on the concept of toxic masculinity. He deserves better imo.
@damian-lk6dh
@damian-lk6dh 2 года назад
Actually dissappointed by how they execute Ethan's (unseen) arc. He breaks up with Kat, completely reading Kat's deception and gaslighting and moves on. Now he's a happy single man playing a lot of role in the play, that's it. I think there should have been an ethan opening sequence, like what they do with Nate's Father and Fez this season, but no they fucking waste it on Nate, Cassie, and Maddie drama which is getting so tiring and long. This season was a mistake. Euphoria season 1 remains supreme

Did anyone else notice how little Lexi wrote for Kats character in her play. Somehow she knew everything about everyone except for Kat. Because no one really asks Kat about her life. The only time they seem to show interest in her was when she has a boyfriend.
@Coco-hq8vt
@Coco-hq8vt 2 года назад
I was also wondering about that, but i think anything about Kats storyline also got cut from lexis play since it didnt happen in the show. Kats character in the play does get a line "3.75 for a grapefruit? What is this, Venezuela?" Which hints at there actually being scenes already filmed with Kats actor in the play (and likely kat herself) that eventually got cut due to Barbie being against the 'eating disorder storyline.' Her story was set up in s1 and some of s2 but you can def feel where it got abandoned after editing.

@@HannahDecember You know what? I didn't even think about Jules being represented in the play at all. I don't know why I didn't even realize that until you mentioned it. Lexi and Jules don't seem to be all that close though but I think it's mainly because Lexi is more introverted (like she says, she's an "observer" of life) whereas Jules is extroverted and is REALLY living life, having sex with tons of people, doing substances and drinking, living life as a trans teenager, she's the exact opposite of Lexi which is probably why they were never really close.

The ‘lack of perspective that makes everything feel like it lasts forever’ part is soo significant. Part of the reason I never realized how childish I was as a teen was because at that time in my life I was the oldest I’d ever been. Liked the season overall. But, just felt too many good characters got sidelined to focus on some storylines that either were just not interesting or overstayed their welcome. However, the cinematography is still fantastic, performances are still great, and while I didn't like the fact some characters felt a bit sidelined (Kat) or just utterly abandoned (Mckay). Euphoria is not realistic-it’s surrealistic. This show is so aptly named because it exaggerates everything about adolescence. However, the show maintains its emotional honesty and Season 2 is so much more about emotions than the first. That’s part of the reason why its messier and weirder (and I loved it). It’s also the reason why it’s not for everyone. It’s a show that’s both extremely melodramatic but also very subtle. A lot of it can feel like it doesn’t make sense, but much of the show is about how emotions take precedence over logic.
@mnt5592
@mnt5592 2 года назад
Agree on the 3rd paragraph. Shows like Euphoria puts more emphasis on feelings and subjectivity rather than clear storylines and plots. They say Euphoria is a vibe. So, if you can't feel the vibe, then it is easy to get lost on the show
@Yellowmenace18

Euphoria is EXPRESSIONISTIC! NOT Surrealist! Surrealism gets thrown at every artistic endeavor that isn't Realistic. Surrealism expresses dream logic, it is symbolic & breaks linear conventions of time & location. Whereas Expressionism's "typical trait is to present the world solely from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically for emotional effect in order to evoke moods or ideas. It expresses the meaning of emotional experience rather than physical reality."

@@Yellowmenace18 If that's the definition that you're going with then it's defnitely both. This show can be quite symbolic and surreal. The last two episodes of the season are very evident of that in how it uses time and unconventional storytelling. But also surrealism refers juxtaposition within the imagery. Just look at Nate's dream sequence, or Rue's drug trips in the first season, or any of Lexi's play. Very expressive but also very surreal. But yes, expressionistic might be a better word.

Great points. I was just thinking about the car scene with Nate and Cassie and how it's actually kind of silly that it's just him speeding and cracking beers open with his teeth, and then she spills some beer on herself, and all this is is enough to make Cassie want to sleep with her best friend's ex. Like it's sounds so dumb on paper, but the way they filmed it and the song that was playing on the radio, it perfectly captured how a moment like that would feel so significant and special to a drunk teenager.

The thing about euphoria is that it’s a story told from the perspective of a underage drug addict her whole world is upside down and not realistic and the same goes for the feelings the other characters have.
@BigHenFor
@BigHenFor 2 года назад
It is realistic for those in the same situation, if not for you. That may be a curse or a blessing depending on your position. This is why "truth" is hardly ever obvious or, black and white, especially where in an environment where one is being manipulated or being gaslighted. For those yet unaware that emotions are not objectively true in themselves but only signposts, or signals of the need for it, their emotions as their subjectivity, are everything. Only time, experience, and self-awareness can dislodge this perception. Truth can only be shown and recognised. Being told it is not enough. And we have to evolve to a state where we can recognise it. This why Euphoria is emotionally realistic because it's showing their subjective relationship to reality. It's not about what is objectively real.

As a teenager, I like Euphoria because it's realism feels empathetic. Throughout highschool, I've sat through so many classes and awareness champagnes, which warn teenagers about the dangers of "sex and drugs". The only problem is that a lot ( not all) teenagers' already deal with those issues and are often scrutinized/ignored for it (instead of given help). Euphoria depicts those weird complicated issues. I've definitely met people who act like the characters in Euphoria and have similar problems, yet they get over looked as "bad kids".

And the fast, chaotic nature of the cinematography camera work in both Magnolia and Euphoria add to the characters' highs\lows, especially since there's a lot of characters suffering from drugs/addictions/death/grief in both! The glamourization wouldn’t be a problem if they casted “””uglyer””””” actors. Due to social media, influencers and etc. I think young people are way more influenced than before. And it’s very naive to think teenagers won’t Watch a show just because its 18+

At this point, I'm pretty sure Rue is dead. Not sure when the series will end, but the final season will have Rue dead for half the season and the rest of the season will be the fallout from that death.

Many people believe that because this series is about teenagers, it is for teenagers and therefore there must be a maturation process, a positive message, a politically correct influence or a defined plot. What I like about this show is that it breaks all those rules of teen shows, it doesn't try to make a message or has a specific plot, things are euphoric and it just happens. It exposes and makes you feel through the perception of each character. It is pure emotion. PS: I still consider that minors should not see it.

tbh, Sam Levinson's writing this season was lousy and mediocre af, the type of shit you'd get from a edgy 13yr old wattpad author.

Does anyone else get Gregg Araki "Nowhere", Jean-Pierre Jeunet "Amelie" & Lars Von Trier "Dogville" vibes from Euphoria S2? I know Sam Levinson has already stated his influences.
@imParisthoee
@imParisthoee 2 года назад
Nowhere and Amelie are in my top 5 favorite films!!! Amelie for the cinematography, colors and the interior world of the protagonist. Nowhere because of the set design, multiple character narratives and general lack of direction.

I'd say a lot of Trainspotting vibes in Rues storyline as well. Plus Nates behaviour reminded me of Beach Rats. Baz Luhmanns Romeo and Juliet aestetic in a lot of scenes.

@@kirag9509 I hope not as well. But Sam says some of the characters are based on himself.. so a writer telling the whole whole story in something they wrote would make sense. Even if it is lame af.

tbh it’s always annoyed me how people who criticize the show will talk about how bad it is because it’s so unrealistic, and then go watch a DC movie and then rate it a 10/10
@mewesquirrel6720
@mewesquirrel6720 2 года назад
Because DC is fiction. There's no Bats beating people up. No one thinks he's real
@NoName-dx1no
@NoName-dx1no 2 года назад
Well it’s kinda about the intent and marketing of the show that matters, people would automatically know a DC or marvel movie is meant to be fictional because it doesn’t portray itself as a reflection of the real world but rather a “what if superheroes existed” type of situation so your practically comparing apples to oranges. Like if you say your film is going to represent a “realistic high school life” people will expect it, especially one similar to their own, if someone says their film is gonna show superheroes it can be as unrealistic as they like as long as there is some logic in universe

when people say "euphoria idolizes drugs" it makes me think that an ex addict would never do that, they know first hand that drugs have been their nightmare.

1:42 "... the next time we see Cassie and Nate they're fucking in the bathroom." I've been watching this channel for a while and that f-bomb; censored or otherwise; came out of nowhere for me. I was surprised when she said that coz they've never said anything like that before on this channel; at least not in my experience.

You know how they say when a million people consume a piece of art they consume a million different pieces of art? Well, when my daughter asked me why I love Euphoria so much I told her out of all the countless teen dramas this is the first one that takes place in the world we live. So that unrealistic criticism never crossed my mind. Just imagine Euphoria but everyone is 90% poorer. That was my high school experience. And I didn't do hard drugs till I was grown.
