definitely... what's up with this video though, it isn't Debbie Harry... I'd be honored if some Blondie & Christmas music fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performance of CHESTNUTS ROASTING ON AN OPEN FIRE on my YT channel. Live acoustic with no autotune or backing tracks. Thanks and seasons greetings.
This song was a staple of WPST FM radio out of Trenton, New Jersey, in the '80s. It's somewhat astounding to think that "Christmas Wrapping" is going on thirty-eight years old. It's an infectious sort of tune that _still_ comes into its own each year as Christmas draws closer. In the mid-'80s I had a set of stereo earphones installed inside my industrial hearing protectors so I could listen to WPST on the overnight (11 PM to 7 AM) shift. Back in the day this song was a morale booster working that overnight shift near to Christmastime.
Walking thru a shopping centre and this came on. I havent heard it in years, instantly shazzamed it and am now blasting it at home on the speakers with all 3 of my kids dancing and jumping around to it! What a classic.
When I first heard this song playing at the mall, as a kid I thought that was Debbie Harry singing, but my dad told me, it’s a group called “The Waitresses” and he had this song on record.
When I'm feeling the pressure, of the massive list of everything that I gotta do between work, outside decorating and gift shopping and wrapping and all else...I hear this song and some how it calms me, and raises a little spirit in me...absolutely one of my Christmas favorites!
This best Christmas song of all time the saxophone, guitar, bass guitar, drums, lyrics, patty's voice and the harmonica everything about the song was and still is so on point!!
Christmas Wrapping The Waitresses Bah Humbug, now that's too strong! 'Cause it is my favorite holiday But all this year's been a busy blur Don't think I have the energy To add to my already mad rush Just 'cause it's 'tis the season The perfect gift for me would be Completions and connections left from last year Ski shop encounter most interesting Had his number but never the time Most of '81 passed along those lines So deck those halls Trim those trees Raise up cups of Christmas cheer I just need to catch my breath Christmas by myself this year Calendar picture, frozen landscape Chill this room for twenty-four days Evergreens Sparkling snow Get this winter over with! Flash back to spring time saw him again Would have been good to go for lunch Couldn't agree when we were both free We tried, we said we'd keep in touch Didn't of course 'till summertime Out to the beach to his boat Could I join him? No This time it was me Sunburn in the third degree Now the calendar's just one page Of course I am excited Tonight's the night I've set my mind Not to do too much about it Merry Christmas, merry Christmas But I think I'll miss this one this year Merry Christmas, merry Christmas But I think I'll miss this one this year Merry Christmas, merry Christmas But I think I'll miss this one this year Merry Christmas, merry Christmas But I think I'll miss this one this year Hardly dashing through the snow 'Cause I bundled up too tight Last minute have-to-dos A few cards, a few calls Because it's RSVP No, thanks No party lights It's Christmas Eve, gonna relax Turn down all of my invites Last fall I had a night to myself Same guy called, Halloween party Waited all night for him to show This time his car wouldn't go Forget it, it's cold, it's getting late Trudge on home to celebrate In a quiet way unwind Doing Christmas right this time A&P has provided me With the world's smallest turkey Already in the oven, nice and hot Oh damn! Guess what I forgot So on with the boots Back out in the snow To the only all night grocery When what to my wondering eyes should appear In the line is that guy I've been chasing all year 'Spending this one alone, ' he said 'Give me a break, this year's been crazy' I said 'Me too, but why are you You mean you forgot cranberries too?' Then suddenly we laughed and laughed Caught on to what was happening That Christmas magic's brought this tale To a very happy ending Merry Christmas, merry Christmas Couldn't miss this one this year Merry Christmas, merry Christmas Couldn't miss this one this year Merry Christmas, merry Christmas Couldn't miss this one this year Merry Christmas, merry Christmas Couldn't miss this one this year Merry Christmas, merry Christmas Couldn't miss this one this year Merry Christmas, merry Christmas Couldn't miss this one this year Merry Christmas, merry Christmas Couldn't miss this one this year Merry Christmas, merry Christmas Couldn't miss this one this year Merry Christmas, merry Christmas Couldn't miss this one this year Merry Christmas, merry Christmas Couldn't miss this one this year Merry Christmas, merry Christmas Couldn't miss this one this year
I always liked this song and felt the kind of relief sung about in the beginning one year when I wasn't able to "go home" for Christmas until the actual day, but then the city, and the two states I would be traveling was hit by a huge snowstorm on Xmas Eve. After talking with mom and agreeing I should come home when I could, the pressure of the holiday was off. I built a snowman in the backyard (at age 30), helped some neighbors shovel, and then baked cookies, listened to Xmas songs (including this one) and read. Previously I had spent (and enjoyed) every Xmas with family and pretty much have since, but that year was one of my faves.
Goddamn, how could this song have escaped me all these years??? I thought I had an encyclopedic knowledge of 80s music. Guess not. This song is outstanding. I just heard it tonight for the first time. Smh.
One of my favourite Christmas songs. It takes me back tp the 80's. Just showed this video to my wife and she likes it. Got to hear it during the holiday season.
Did you know Tracy Wormworth played the bass on this song. She's been the B52's bass player for a long time and she's played with many top artists as well. She's amazing!
Not true, Ryan. Tracy Wormworth didn't play with the Letterman band. Her brother is the drummer in Conan O'Brien's band. (Full-time after Max Weinberg left.) But Will Lee was the bass player for the "World's Most Dangerous Band" during Letterman's entire run. Felicia Collins was the female guitar player in the Letterman Orchestra.
This song is pure Joy!!! Merry Christmas everyone remember make Christmas the way you want it. And to all of our loved ones and great friends who are no longer with us...We love you and will never forget you!!! Merry Christmas y’all.
Always liked this one. The sound, the story the song tells. And hearing it reminds me of working part-time in the Foodtown and the A&P (has the pride in me with the world's smallest turkey!) food stores and this song would come on the speakers. Always seemed to be on Christmas eve, snowing, everyone rushing, the store pure madness and christmas trees being sold in the parking lot amongst strung up lights. Lots of great memories. Oh, and love the sax. Merry Christmas!

A very sad end to lead singer Patty Donahue. Passed away at the age of 40 on 12/9/96 from lung cancer. Poor lady smoked herself 2 death. A very heavy cigarette smoker. Gone so soon and so young. May she RIP.
Tracy Wormwood!!! She played with B-52s (Love Shack) and Sting, among many others. Kind of ironic that she was the only female instrumentalist in The Waitresses!!!
A new-wave Christmas! This is one of the modern staples of contemporary Christmas season music. This period ended sometime after the mid-1990s. After that period, any other Christmas song made just doesn't cut it and is not made to be memorable....or not listenable!
My husband plays this song for me around this time of year. This was about twenty years ago, and he's still doing it! He knows this is my favorite Xmas song. The reason is, that, I thought I was going to be alone for the rest of my life until I met him! I read in the comments below and that's sad how Patty Donahue passed away at age 40 from lung cancer [smoking]
this has me thinking about how fun The Waitresses' first album was. I began listening to KROQ (Southern California) around 1981, and The Waitressess' first album, "Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful' was released in January of '82. At the time I was taking comedy improv workshop classes at the Groundling Theatre on Melrose Ave., and right next to the theater was ground zero for Punk and New Wave music - Vinyl Fetish Records. That's where I purchased The Waitresses' first album.
