This episode takes place on day 504 ( 1 year, 4 months, 19 days ) after the start of the Zombie Apocalypse. Rick has been awake from his coma for 445 days ( 1 year, 2 months, 20 days )

The Governor didn't want the prison. The Governor just wanted to take everything away from Rick and Michonne like (he felt) they did to him, which includes taking over the prison or destroying it. This war was about vengeance for him and it didn't matter who had to die.

The last walker it focused on was woman who stabbed herself in first episode of this season

Comic Comparisons : in the comics It’s Tyreese who gets decapitated his comic counterpart is actually introduced much earlier than in the show before they get to the farm the battle for the prison goes down a bit different The Governor is presumed dead for a while before he randomly shows up at the prison gates It should be noted that the Governor never kills all of his people or burns down Woodbury so he still had an army with him him becoming Brian Heriot is completely unique to the show I can’t remember exactly but I think their first attack failed Nonetheless they eventually bust through and kill a lot of people Hershel does die in this battle in the comics but not in the same way He begs to be killed after his son is shot right in front of him and the Governor grants him that Rick tries to escape with Lori and Judith but Lori who is carrying Judith is shot and falls to the ground killing both her and the baby after the Governor successfully wins the prison Lily who was already a member of Woodbury and dealt the killing shot on Lori realizes she also killed a baby and gets mad at the Governor when the Governor shows no remorse she shoots him dead in the head after that nothing more is said about the Woodbury group.

R.I.P to Hershel great character who brought so much love his theme song R.I.P to the actor Scott Wilson who played this character and who sadly passed away from Leukemia 4 years ago Oct 6 2018 Age 76 He was the ultimate voice of reason right next to Dale and R.I.P to the Governor as well who was a great villain and did a great job at making us hate him great work by David Morrissey portraying this character.

So you had me curious about distance as well. So I looked up Atlanta (can't remember the town Rick is from but know he went to Atlanta where he met his first group. Then found a Woodbury, Ga which is about an hour by car from Atlanta. In between these two is a prison in Senoia, GA. Which makes sense because of Rick, Carl, and Michonne going back to Rick's town and running into Morgan. So walking is feasible along with a car definitely being feasible.

He is just using the prison as an excuse. He has a trauma that eventually led him to insanity. He can't be reasoned with at this point. Though i question the people following who just went with the slaughter and destroying the place they seek even though they were hesitant when the Governor was informing them of his plans.

The governor is dead, Oscar, Axel, Milton, Merle, Hershel, and Andrea have been avenged
