The Walking Dead - Sophia Wasn't Mine -- Daryl's Rant

This is such an amazing scene (S2E9) I was completely driven to analyzing it to death. If you want the full meal deal, read on.
We don't know too much about Carol. She is very quiet and her emotions are cloaked in reserved dignity. But every time Daryl opens his mouth, we learn far more about him than the words he's speaking. He is the bubbling cauldron of volatile emotions.
Carol is tenacious, that's for sure. He doesn't scare her at all. And neither does walking across a big field at night to talk to him. Really, she has nothing left to lose, so why not be eaten by a walker? So sad. I keep thinking the reality of Sophia's loss hasn't hit her yet.
Their conversation isn't much of a conversation. He's just mad and sarcastic. He doesn't care what she's saying, he's just ready to vent, to insult her, to drive her away. The comment about sticking her nose in everybody else's business is just plain mean. And not very accurate from what I can see. But this is Daryl grieving.
When Carol replies "Go ahead", at first I thought she was inviting more insults, let him rant and get it out of his system. I really hope that's what she wanted, but I'm afraid she was offering herself up to be hit. Oh, yuck, Carol. Daryl doesn't get it, but then after a second, I'm pretty sure he does. To his credit, he doesn't get it at first. Obviously hitting women is not part of who he is. (We know there is far more behind that façade. He's only shown it to Carol though, so he's probably feeling vulnerable around her.)
Carol stands her ground and says nothing. At first he is not focused at all when he calls her "a real piece of work" and assumes she's judging him and his upbringing. But she hasn't said a word. Then he begins to focus and drill into her. He is cruel. Perhaps part of what he says is true. And still she stands her ground.

Daryl cannot cope with Carol because she didn't react to Sophia's death the way he wanted or expected her to. Her grief seemed almost non-existent. She didn't go to Sophia's "funeral", he did.

Maybe the reason Carol went out to Daryl that night was because she was looking to feel something. Anything. And she knew that he'd beat her up -- somehow. But I'm not sure about that. He certainly beat her up verbally. I suppose that's a step above physical abuse.
Why does he say "You ain't my problem"? Because he wishes she was? Because he wishes he could comfort her? But he comes completely unequipped to handle the whole situation. For the first time in his life he felt like part of a family and that has been taken away.

The most interesting line was "Sophia wasn't mine" and the unspoken part of that that came through loud and clear to me was saying "then why does this hurt so much?"
He may as well have shot her with an arrow from his crossbow with his last line which was full of fury. So cruel and unfair. He knows they were always together or Sophia was with Carl. Carol's head whips back as though she's been struck. Whoa. Brilliant acting!
After that, his expression is way too enigmatic for me, but he's watching her like a hawk. It's so dark, it's hard to see details in their expressions. Such a shame. I don't think there are any tears on Carol's face. But after she agrees with him, she heaves an exquisite tiny sob. Another brilliant gem of acting.
Of course he cares about her or he wouldn't have caught her as she went running to Sophia. Perhaps he feels he failed her and seeing her reminds him of his failure. Maybe he feels un-needed or useless.
Did either of them get what they needed here? I think so. It's a start. And it won't be smooth. I can't wait to see what happens next!
In case it doesn't come across in this analysis, I adore both these beautifully flawed characters! And (for what it's worth) a huge thumbs up from me to the writers and fabulous actors Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride.

I think Daryl got worked up because he's not used to a person caring about him. His parents sure as hell didn't, not to mention his dad used him as a human punching bag. Just like Daryl said when he was in the woods; Merle talks big but he was never there; he didn't protect Daryl like he said he did. When he got lost, his father didn't even notice his absence. To have Carol care about him is foreign to him, and doesn't know how to react to it. I'm guessing that since Daryl hasn't had anyone to care for him, he thought Carol was faking it, so in result, pushed her away and was mean, just so that he didn't get hurt like he usually did.

I think when Daryl said "your afraid cause your all alone" that went deeper than his anger towards CArol here. I think it applies to him too; he hasn't got anyone either and he knows it. This rant is his way of making someone else feel like he feels: alone, angry and worthless (because he blames himself for not finding Sophia, he feels like is not needed anymore) because it makes him feel less alone in his torment. Wow that was deep.
@oprlvr
@oprlvr 10 лет назад
Daryl wasn't angry at Carol, here. He was irritated that she returned to his private campsite, after earlier events.. but not directly angry at her. If were the case, then he would have have just turned and walked away from Carol. But he didn't. This was all just misdirected frustration over losing Sophia. And yes.. This was indeed a deeply impacted scene

I love reading peoples analysis of this scene. my take on it is that they both had guilt and blamed themselves for Sophia. some say Carol wanted to be hit or yelled at, i think thats true. but Daryl wanted her to yell back and wanted her to hate him for "letting" Sophia die. notice every time he says something mean he pauses expecting backlash but he gets none. so he says worse and worse things, still hoping she'll fight him but she doesnt, because she knows that what he truly needs is to just get all the anger out and realize that she doesnt hate or blame him, even if he thinks that he wants to be hurt.
@pluckybellhop66
@pluckybellhop66 8 лет назад
I agree with all of that. I definitely think they both wanted to be yelled at. Here's my take on it: Between this scene and the scene where Daryl yells at Beth, he shows that he holds the deaths of people who are important to him on his conscience. And the scene where he describes to Carl how he found out his own mother died is what made me think it deeply affects Daryl when other people are dealing with kids losing parents and parents losing kids and that maybe he associates that kind of death with guilt. And Carol, who was beaten by her husband for years and held the weight of that so her daughter wouldn't have to, learned to associate love with pain and often demonstrates tough love with people. I think she wanted to be shown that tough love, to be slapped with emotion. They both force themselves to feel the guilt because they think they deserve it, and I think the moment Daryl stopped yelling is the moment he began to realize neither of them really deserved it. It's such a layered moment with two very layered characters.

I think the reason he acted this way is because he had never been treated this way. After Carol kissed him on the head and said 'You're every bit as good as them, every bit' he didn't know how to react. He reacted the only way he knew how, get angry. To me, that's how you know he loves her. Like someone said earlier, behind anger is hurt and behind hurt is love.

This scene was Daryl's first major breakthrough for his character development. "Sophia wasn't even mine!" Gave him away completely, that he did care this whole time and that he is in pain with her passing. His whole rant before that line is him trying to make it seem like he didn't care, but then he says that and he realizes his whole rant was pointless because he did care.

0:43 I find this part so interesting, cause he’s intentionally insulting her to hurt her and push her away, but all of what he says is so similar to himself. I think it applies to him as well. And I think it shows his own fear, and how he felt like he had to push her away to protect himself, like a defense mechanism of sorts. He didn’t know how to deal with someone actually caring about him, he didn’t know how that felt, and it was overwhelming.

Daryl made it a personal quest to find Sophia because maybe this will be way to sort of clear up his past. Everything he said reflects on him. He knows there's a little boy inside him trying to prove he's a man, & finding Sophia dead made him feel like he never will. When he said "you got no husband" he meant "I don't have a father" when he said "no daughter" he meant "I don't have my brother". He's nervous, but feels like he should push her away to sort of tell himself there's no way this woman cares about me, since nobody ever did.

I think in this situation Daryl felt like he could relate to Sophia. He was that kid once that ended up alone in the woods when others failed to notice him gone, so he made it his personal quest to find her because he knows how bad it is. I think him getting mad at Carol is his way of taking it out at his own parent, his father for neglecting him. So deep down, he's the angry forgotten about kid and Carol is the neglectful, cold hearted father that is incapable of loving anyone, that's what he wants fo believe anyway but Carol's actions later on prove him wrong that she's not like that.

Glen Mazzara on this scene- "Daryl is rocked by [the barn massacre]. He wanted to be Carol's knight in shining armor and take up this quest and be the one to find that girl. He now questions his self-worth. Was he a fool to ever take on that quest? This brings up issues of his upbringing. He actually is going to hit Carol and pulls back his fist because that is his learned behavior and her learned behavior is to take it. Her generous spirit is willing to take that because she cares about him so deeply." It's honestly hard to say who to pity more in this scene. They're both such broken, tragic people, and their interactions in this episode and the two preceding are just so poignant because of that.

When I re-watched this scene a few times, it was all clear.. .. Daryl never fooled me .. He obviously likes Carol, here .. a lot. Otherwise he wouldn't have acted as he did earlier on (holding on her at the barn, etc) He just always lived his life in defense mode cuz that's all he knew. If he didn't like Carol, he would have just walked away and left her standing there.

Did I seriously write that comment that way? LOL! I am soooo much brighter than that! :) What I should have said was... It was way obvious the 1st time I watched this scene from S2, that Daryl obviously had a secret thing for Carol...But was too distraught by the be-damned efforts of finding Sophia alive... Poor man. But he didn't simply walk away. He definitely had feelings for lovely Carol... He just didn't know about himself at the time. The dire evidence was of course, the manner in which he held onto gorgeous Carol during the fateful barn scene earlier... Such care and such loving tenderness.. Any woman would have wanted to trade places with Carol :)) Daryl wouldn't have acted that way around just any woman.. Widowed Carol was different... and special :) She wasn't just an attractive woman who'd lost her beloved daughter... Daryl saw her in a very different light. And glad be that. :) And I still can't get enough of Daryl grabbing onto her, and holding her... during that barn scene.... I watch it in slow-mo

I do love this scene, and really never realized how relevant it was to their relationship. Idk if I agree that she was inviting him to hit her, but saw it more as her wanting him to open up and express all his emotions after saying that she wouldn't let him pull away. Then when he's tearing into her and she flinches I think that's when he realizes just how much they are the same. When he says Sophia wasn't mine, that was just heart breaking, cause at this point no one is really his, he doesn't see himself as part of the group/family yet and is still holding himself separate. It's crazy seeing the transformation for both Daryl and Carol between season 1 and 9, it's some phenomenal acting and character development which is what makes them and this show my absolute favorite.

He saw her prep for a shot and he knew, from personal experience, what she was expecting and he couldn’t believe he was walking tall right into his daddy’s footsteps. It’s that moment right there that a man determines if he’s going to walk that same path, or forge his own. Glad the writers had Daryl forge his own path alongside Rick.

This scene always makes me want to cry bc Carol knew that Daryl blames himself a bit for not finding Sophia and he needed to vent so she let him. But what gets me every time is the very end when you can see the fear & sadness on Carol's face as she's being brave and not cry or lash out at Daryl. She was probably used to it due to her awful husband who used to yelled and beat her up....I just love it when these two are together and so glad that they found each other to lean on through out the show.

I love how they juxtapose Darryl with internally stronger characters. Carol in this season is still very physically weak but she is internally strong with having being abused by her husband Ed. Darryl is internally weakened by how rough he grew up and having to rely on himself and sometimes his brother. Later in the series we see Darryl alone with Beth who like carol in season 2 is physically weak. But she calls Darryl out on all his fronts. He breaks down and she was there to catch him. I miss this walking Dead. I haven’t watched since Glenn met Negan.

When Daryl is yelling at her, "You have no husband, no daughter" he is really voicing his own situation, he is completely alone. He has no family,no partner,no place in anyone's life. This group of survivors is the closest family unit he has had in a long time. He let himself become attached, and now the pain of that is too much for him to bear,so he lashes out. I love the unspoken friendship/relationship between the two of them. Even if it doesn't become romantic.It is a deep resounding one.

Even now this scene holds up as one of the best in the show's history. As much as people rip on Season 2 for being "boring" it gave us so much development that we needed. Carol is ready, waiting and willing for Daryl to hit her because she's used to it, Daryl wants Carol to keep interjecting with her own criticism. This is probably one of the most emotionally powerful scenes in recent television.

This is probably one of my favorite scenes of the show. Daryl is struggling with himself and Carol knows this and comes to check on.him to make sure he doesn't pull away. I agree with what you thinking, but would add that in some way Daryl's rage is also venting his feelings of loss. He knows she was always there for Sophie and what happened was not her (or anyone elses fault) He feels he has failed. I think one of the reasons Daryl is such popular character is the way Norman plays him.. He's a lost little boy and we want to hug him.. at least I do :)

daryl's face when he realizes he almost hit carol breaks my heart. all daryl has ever known is violence & he grew up being taught that hurting someone is the only way to make them understand. carol's marriage taught her the same thing & i think that when daryl saw her flinch away,almost subconciously accepting the blow that she thought was coming, he began to realize that carol & everyone else in the group were slowly drawing him away from the vicious habits that merle & his family taught him.

I don't believe he will ever strike her. He's too good for that. I also think that Carol knows that, but it's just a bad force of habit for her to flinch when a man in angry at her. I think after this experience, she trusted Daryl more for the reason that she knows he won't hit her.

I love this to bit!! When I first saw it and Daryl said that she had no husband, no daughter and that she was all alone I felt he was describing himself. He's all alone too. And he seems to say everything in the book to push her away, yet she stayed. When he said "Sophia wasn't mine!" I felt that he sort of wished she were, or that he at least had family in all of this chaos.

I've learned to pity carol. She spent her whole marriage to that piece of shit in fear. She forgot what it meant to protect her daughter. Season 3 was a turning point for her character. She went too far in season 4 but in all honesty Karen and David wouldve died anyway. We've grown attached to Daryl because he calls out people on their bullshit and doesn't waste time protecting the group. It doesn't hurt that he's handsome too lol

One thing that always hits me the most about characters being abused is the emptiness they feel. I mean just seeing a similar emotonless or zero reaction like Carlo had on while Daryl just lashed out, really gives me an idea of how long she has been used to that kind of bad treatment. Admittedly as someone who barely understands the trauma of abuse, really hit me hard. Then the part of her instincts kicks in on just readying for the moment of being hit by Daryl, really set the tone further for me at the thought of someone reacting like towards me.

I remember analysing this was the way of daryl mourning Sophia, I think one or two episodes prior to that he told Carol about the folklore of a blossom flower they saw and how it was a good omen for missing people, how a flower would never blosson for his brother so it was probably Sophia, he allowed himself to be vulnerable when Carol was the only one looking, this scene is the kill of a witness, he was "fixing" someone who saw him by pretending to be someone else

+Clarance Shimmy Daryl has pretty much always had a strong moral compass. It was Merle who was such a bad influence on him. He still has it. People still get a second chance with him provided that he doesn't see them as a true danger to anyone he loves. Those two idiots are out of chances though.
@burrichgrrl57

***** I found Daryl to be interesting immediately but I've loved watching his evolution. First season he was mostly angry and he never had any problems expressing anger. If he had stayed that way he would have been pretty boring in the long run for me. As he evolved he became less angry and more thoughtful. I think expressing himself became harder because he had less experience expressing those kind of emotions. I haven't noticed him being a "pussy" or less of a bad ass, especially seeing how the things that scare him the most have nothing to do with physical danger and everything to do with being accepted by the people who he has come to love as family and keeping them safe. Even in a traditional sense he didn't seem much like a "pussy" when he took out an armed man with only his knife and his fists and then blew the shit out of Negan's goons. Maybe we are watching different shows.

***** I actually replied to the wrong person! Sorry. :-/ I wonder if Daryl has less screen time now in order to let the other characters grow. It seems that when Daryl is in a scene he pretty much steals it, something he has been doing from the start. Early on it was great. I don't think they ever thought that Norman and Daryl would be such a heavy hitter and were really pleased to get a character that resonated so much with the audience. Now I think they are trying to give other characters room to breath. I think the thing I miss the most about early Daryl was just trying to figure him out. He was never quite what I expected. So interesting!

This scene is really interesting because there really is so much subtext going on. To me, it seems like all the nasty stuff Daryl says to her is actually his own inner monologue - he blames himself for not being able to save Sophia and directs the blame to Carol in order to relieve his own feeling of guilt. It's stupid and irrational but it's a defense mechanism. The loss and failure is messing with his head, and it obviously shows that he cares more than he's comfortable with.

In the behind the scenes, both Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride said that Daryl was about to hit her but caught himself. I think that also shows a lot, that he almost resorted to it, especially when it was Carol, and Ed did it to her all the time. I don't think it's in his nature to hit women, either, but it definitely showed more about him and his anger. And I was in a ball and crying when he sat in the prison and threw a fit when he thought she was dead. All the emotions!
