As a US Navy veteran, I'm going to presume that you have never served in the military. There are multiple island bases located throughout the world, including Hawaii and Guam. Regardless of branch, military personnel are trained to understand their equipment to a point where they are able to service it and otherwise repair it if something goes wrongs, providing they have the resources available to attempt repairs. I remember an emergency breakaway in which my ship lost an underway replenishment station. Repair division spent all night rebuilding that station with what we had available. That makeshift station worked and we completed our deployment. All that is to say as long as resources can be procured, the military should be able to function. Food, medicine, and materials are all limited resources, however, and even island bases can only last so long, even if it were possible to raise plants and animals to help provide food. Truthfully, all zombie scenario writers love to make the military look incompetent, so that a group of poorly trained and unprepared halfwits can become heroes. I would suggest doing some real research and consult with actual active duty military from all branches (there must be a recruiting office near you) and see what they have to say about zombie scenarios and how the military would function, you might be surprised.

First off: Thank you for your service. Second: I agree. If the US main was lost to a Zombie take over, the Military wouldn't just disappear from the face of the earth. But from a average civilians point of view, the Military would just disappear. I guess in The Walking Dead, the Navy, and what remains of the US Army, and Air Force. Are planning on returning to the Main land. Third: I never read the book, or watched the show. But I am sure at some point, the Military will return. (If the book's writer, or the Show's writers have half the knowledge you displayed here.)

You are correct mate..its a very bad joke! I can assure you that they would've never even gotten CLOSE enough to REAL soldiers to do that, much less without being spotted, and as armed unknowns, they would've been treated as highly-likely-hostile anyway..and held at gunpoint, ready to be dropped at the first sign of refusing to even halt & ID, much less disarm..and no dumb backwoods hillbilly attempt at 'friendliness' would've saved them either, because.. ANY attempt to encircle, or surround, is always a hostile act..ALWAYS! If you think civ police are trained to own & take charge of a situation, then don't even get me started on how much you don't know about what soldiers are trained to do.. Especially when they are tasked with clearing out & securing specific objectives or holding ground. Soldiers excell at living rough, having high standards of discipline & fieldcraft, camouflage & hunting down enemy & sign, finding threats FIRST, and dealing with them DIRECTLY..they are not cops, dont waste time on prisoners, (except perhaps in the very short term for op-intel, but there are sure as hell no lawers or american 'miranda rights' there! ) No.. That entire scene was just an absurd fantasy..even a civ cop, in peacetime, isn't that dumb or unobservant..and would be demanding they be disarmed before allowing them close to chat..and even they would still be highly suspicious.. If you believe that real soldiers then, in a wartime/martial law/disaster setting woundn't be always extremely suspicious, and even far more likely to use instant lethal force, and trained ready, willing & able to do exactly that..( or even just out of heightened personal survival instincts!) I'm an ex Australian army infantry guy..and if this silly scenario ever happened to anyone trained here..they'd get zero sympathy from me..they damn well deserved to die! Any serious soldier, from any country, knows this: "Death is nature's way of telling you, in no uncertain terms, that your fieldcraft sucks.." (or that the other guy's, even if only on that day, at that moment..was still just a fine, knife's edge, of either skill or luck, better than yours was.. So.. Semper Vigilans, Semper Paratus, Semper Fidelis.. Enough said..

@Eva Adamska Emphasis on the "ex" One of many silly things i did as a much younger man..old news now. Why do you ask?
@bjlewis5431
@bjlewis5431 5 лет назад
@Eva Adamska No, I'm actually quite typical of an Aussie soldier..always been a fairly quiet & humble man..you picked up on that well, especially from just a few words, of a man you've never met.. "Every time you speak..you put your mind on parade" We Aussies are mostly "quiet professionals" and we don't serve for "public glory" We are well known for a bit of larrikin-ism, and jesting..but when it comes to soldiering, we are in the worlds top most tiers..and we quietly train many of the worlds military units, Doctors, Nurses etc. It was purely for purposes of providing my credibility, in my comment's explanation & opinion, that i even mentioned my prior service.. And i most certainly would NOT have, had i still been in the service, lest it attract unwanted attention to me or my family..or jeopardise any aspect of security or non-disclosure requirements. I stay well away from those who like to crow too loudly, especially in public, about their service. I just wanted to inject a little minor "reality check" into a comments section..something i enjoy doing on occasions..my own service did not involve any operational deployments, and i have no great personal exploits or triumphs to laud, even if it wouldn't clash with some security classification to discuss them. There are right times & places for soldiers wanting recognition of their efforts, among others who also know & understand.. But the internet will never be one of them. The Stolen Valour aspect is also a rising concern..It has always been there, but is far more prevalent now. But in truth, any recruit at 1RTB, Kapooka (thats our Army's boot camp here, IET for infantry is at Singleton) would know, and be able to recognise that the silliness of the scenes, that i commented on, in "the walking dead" are the sort of stupidity that only someone who has absolutely no idea, of even the most basics of soldiering, would actually believe.. It makes military people seem highly incompetent, just to add another days episode onto a soap opera on TV. And, when i said it was a silly thing, i meant it amicably, i was proud to serve.. I got to stand on the shoulders of giants, for a time..it is those that came before us, that gave their all, who deserve all the public recognition..thats what they get honoured for. The whole ANZAC tradition is based entirely around a very deep.. "lest we forget" mindset. Not some twisted "worship us more" mentality..that is the domain of politicians..not a healthy or humble attitude to have in anyone, anywhere..it is a far more common trait in "wanna-be" or failed military or police types attitudes..than any real Soldier, Sailor, or Airman would likely possess..we know, without brash words or false bravado, why we serve. It sounds to me as though your thoughts on vets, have been formed by only ever hearing from the hoards of far too loud "couch commandos" and other wanna-be's screeching on the internet, like a noisy flock of Cockatoos! They talk crap..if they ever discussed anything serious at all, it would likely breach some kind of security or, at the very least, one of several signed "non-disclosure" style of understandings, as we all do on entry into the forces.. And they would soon be getting found, arrested & charged. Period. Hence the very occasional little reality checks..you were quick to pick up the subtle sound of a real guy, from all the noisy cockatoos.. And I'm not even a Veteran.. just someone who did a little military service as a young bloke..and wanted to point out in that chat, that any competent military unit, (hell, even a new recruit or police officer), wouldn't have allowed that, much less fallen for it.. Real Veterans are a whole next step up again.. Hope this helps your overall opinion of servicemen & veterans a little, Eva..it seems we are a little under-represented, or perhaps its more a cultural difference..you haven't mentioned a specific country..just an on-line US TV show comment, either way.. Have yourself a great day, where ever you are, and a warm G'day from 🇦🇺 Cheers! 🍻

speaking in regards to the system to keep one person from dying on the ship (or in a camp) and turning then attacking the rest of them, the best defense Ive ever read up on was in "Rot & Ruin" by Jonathan Maberry, they put basic slide locks on every door. at night when you go to sleep, or when you are alone in any room you lock the door behind you. then if someone dies or turns over night etc they will be stuck, the next day when they realize you're missing they knock on your door and if youre a zombie you'll try to attack the door. so then they shoot. (often they had sliders on the door so there was a window at face level to open and shoot into)

I read about the battle of Yonker in World War Z from Max Brooks. Their weapons were NOT ineffective, they destroy like tens of thousands of zombies. The only reason they lost is because the crowd they tried to stop was HUGE, millions of infected New Yorkers. They slaughtered the horde until their big guns ran out of ammo, there were still millions of zombies, then they were attacked from behind, paniced and it was over. They knew they should aim for the head though.

Glenn was killed about a year to a year and a half after the rise of the walkers. I did a little google searching, it takes about 6 to 10 years, depending on soil conditions for a human body to be stripped to a skeleton. I would sudjest that in conditions that lack macro scavenging, (no bears birds wolves coyotes) eating on a walker, due to fear of humans still being engrained in them. You would only be having scavenging happen on a small macro level, say flys having adapted to laying eggs on a moving dead body after a dozen or 3 dozen generation's passed. Along with micro organic decomposition. This being said i think most walkers that have been showen by twd to the date of Glens death have been excessively decomposed. After the googling i did and my real life experiences in dealing with road kill deer... I do believe it wouldnt be untell year 8 or 9 before most of the walkers had been stripped to Skelton

Most ships carry three to five months of food= to three meals a day for only the crew. If said survivors where on said ship then we are looking at maybe a month of hard rations. (Hard ration= 500-1000 calories per day.) In all likelihood the food would be divided up like this 35-50% of food going to the actual crew and marines that are on board, 25-30% going to engineering core and, the rest for citizens(majority going to citizens who can contribute to the overall function of the ship. @james8565
@james8565 4 года назад
I enjoyed watching his video, and it gave me a few ideas. The U.S. Navy and navies in general may well already be near cities or the mainland during the outbreak helping the government keep order. Whether they follow orders, go rogue or whatever, due to fuel issues, the best place to station your boat would be next to or in a city, since to avoid zombies you can just pull up the gangplank. Crews can be sent on land to forage for supplies and maybe even set up semi-permanent bases, from where they could probably recruit survivors. If so, maybe the boat would be a navy personnel only safe zone which is used as a centre of operations to re-establish control. Hawaii is too big to be cleared by the Navy alone so I think that smaller islands around the world, which are near the mainland for access to foraging would be ideal. If the whole world was going to pot, I am sure that there would be some islands that would be taken over by naval and military elements from around the world and used as a base or just a safe haven. Oil rigs would be one way of keeping a fresh and steady supply of oil for planes and boats without nuclear fuel, so these would be guarded and fought over. Spare parts would be a problem so any military warehouses would also be a likely place to find survivors centred around a military core calling the shots. This would be naval bases or otherwise.

@@TealJosh No sorry you are incorrect. I am a US Navy veteran and I broke it down in the above post started by Fifi. It might come as a surprise to a civilian but I would dare say that the US Military's, as with any military, weakness comes from our supply chain. Look at history and all of the great battles and wars that have been fought in this world. The supply chain is always one of the first tactical targets hit. You break a military's supply chain and you have essentially broken the military. There are definitely contingencies in place for stuff like this, much of which I am not aware of I am sure, but in an apocalyptic scenario such as this one, no military would be fully prepared to handle it.
@armynurseboy
@armynurseboy 3 года назад
This scenario you are discussing is exactly what John Ringo wrote about in his "Black Tide Rising" series. It's about a zombie apocalypse, but more in the vein of "23 Days Later" zombies than Walking Dead, as the "zombies" aren't risen dead, but rabid humans. Remnants of the US Navy and Marines, along with civilians who join them survive by salvaging ships and scrounging on small islands in the Atlantic, before attempting to retake a foothold on the US mainland.
@fluffbuck3t
@fluffbuck3t 2 месяца назад
It's important to note that while nuclear powered vessels can go 20 or so years without refueling, the refueling process is EXTENSIVE, can take over a year, and essentially REQUIRES drydocking the ship for the duration of the work. And in an apocalypse the manpower and knowledge of how to do the work will be very limited, so it could take much longer. This only matters of course if they are able to figure out how to supply food for themselves for over 20 years to get to that point.

the reason that they failed is... it was necessary for the plot. In Fear the walking dead we see the Catalina islands, just off shore of SoCal.. this would have been a staging base for local military command: It is an island with a limited population that you can take care of walker outbreaks and hold. Was it in the show? Nope. Just like in Seattle they could have fortified Mercer island. But even if it were not essential to the plot that the military fails.. it would be seriously difficult to nigh impossible for them to hold the line. CDC episode makes it clear that everyone is infected and no matter the means of death you WILL come back.. see the prison flu episode.. from one of the flashbacks to Rick in the hospital Shane sees the army shooting patients.. not in the head mind you, just killing them.. that made things worse now didn't it? Add the number of people that just die of natural causes every day on earth and you have a numbers problem that the US military can not deal with effectively. If they had really thought about on the level of Max Brooks we would have seen things like Catalina being a stronghold where the military bugged out to after cobalt.

ivan boston but what your not understanding about this series is that they are doing the worst possibly scenario. Meaning governments did nothing to prepare thinking it was containable and not needing to warn people both civilians and officials (we see evidence in this from ftwd when madison says that the authorities would tell us and that they were going to contain it). the whole series is set up for the apocalypse to just appear out of nowhere and sniff out humanity. In the book world war z it’s a worst case scenario but humans still win. They governments of the world knew well before the great panic and acted accordingly many countries did what real world countries would do so your right about that but you have to understand that the whole part of the walking dead is that the walker pandemic literally snuck up on the population and ended civilization basically overnight while max brooks using a more real world model didn’t even max brooks is very off from what would actually happen

We saw in TWD and FTWD that enough of the US military infrastructure was still in place to firebomb the major cities of the United States. Atlanta and Los Angeles were shown being firebombed and San Diego was mentioned by refugees off the Pacific coast as being hit. I also believe they showed a burnt out San Diego when our heroes crossed the border back into the US in season 3 of FTWD. The logical choice to launch such an aerial attack on southern California would be the Navy launching strikes from carriers, The aircraft hitting LA are shown attacking from the sea. That means the military seeing wildfire go global and overwhelm local/State Law Enforcement and the National Guard and giving the order for the Navy to put itself to sea. You also have a full Marine Division and several SEAL Teams in the greater San Diego area that could have been airlifted to the Channel Islands. (The SEALs actually use one as a training center) The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department has a station on Catalina and they (along with the LAPD) have some airlift capability and boats to reach the islands. The Coast Guard also could steam out there. Catalina has an airstrip that could handle military transports bringing in what's left of the California National Guard. Point is, there should have been enough military capability to secure the islands and sweep them for walkers while leaving plenty of troops to patrol the beaches for washed up walkers. Those islands would be a perfect staging area and allow the military to set up refugee camps for those folks on the water. The Coast Guard, Navy and Marine/National Guard aircraft could have patrolled the coastal waters for pirates. The rest of the military would have secured ports in San Diego and Long Beach and Los Angeles and dug in behind barbed wire with heavy weapons, tanks,artillery and armored vehicles backed by airpower off Carriers and from the channel islands. If they had enough time to set up the firebombing, they should have had enough time to move food stores from their bases to the islands or even set up a massive perimeter around Camp Pendleton with the sea as an escape route. The base could continue shipping food and supplies out to the islands and be a launching point for operations to retake So Cal.

The amphib fleet is, by design, capable of loading a great deal of stores of every kind. They can bed and water hundreds of passengers for extended periods. Along with auxiliary ships, they could support a large number of people while at anchorage or slow steaming, thus conserving fuel to reduce the need to put into a refueling depot. They all can carry helicopters and some have maintenance facilities to maintain them. The ships with well decks can bring the boats needed to ferry landing parties ashore to get the supplies needed and return safely. Done right, they could last several years just sticking to the coast or make for islands that they'd have a chance of clearing and make safe.

US Navy man here. A Nimitz Class Aircraft carrier is typically stocked with about 45 Days worth of supplies at minimum at all time. USNS Auxillary Ships bring supplies to our ships via Replenishment At Sea (RAS) which is basically where we connect a big ass wire to each ship and we transfer our cargo to and from. We'll have 2 stations manned at a time, plus a Helo going to help get some of our supplies on board faster. Hope that gives some insight to how the US Navy works out at sea!
@TWDExplained
@TWDExplained 3 года назад
Awesome insight! Thanks! - So they attach the cargo somehow to the wire for transfer to the other ship? I have watched a video of them doing this with a hose (?fuel) but not cargo.
@KatoChaotix
@KatoChaotix 3 года назад
@@TWDExplained Yeah. It’s a 10-30 minute process where basically we shoot line over to the Aux Ship, they tie off their lines, and we pull it over to our ship by hand, then by winch. Once we get all necessary lines in hand, we connect the large wire (The Span Wire) to our Sliding Padeye (basically a device with a hook that moves up and down so the cargo can slide down the line. Think a Zip Line.) That’s basically all there is to getting connected. After that, it’s as simple as getting cargo secured to the actual hook device (I can’t remember the name, but if you see anything on a RAS, it’s that Yellow thing). Fuel is the one you’ve seen with the Hoses. Nimitz Class Carriers can take on about 1.5 Million Gallons of Jet Fuel or more. I think the most we’ve taken in a single day was 3.4 Million Gallons of JP-5 Another interesting fact is that Nimitz Class Carriers used to be able to SEND fuel like Auxiliary Ships, but currently, only CVN-76 has its SENDING Fuel station active. So if a Smaller ship needs fuel while at Sea, we can hook up and refuel them!

Nimitz class about 90 days without resupply under normal portions BUT I had a buddy who was on a carrier back in 2017 and they went 117 without resupply without really noticing because they knew ahead, during the initial outbreak yes I would say around 90 days like normal, BUT later on in the series im sure they would be on half rationing and prioritize more food stowage by cutting open sections of bulkheads into "void" or "inaccessible" spaces (normally all that are in those is some structural support nothing major that can leak or anything)....so id say they could probably stock up on around 180-250 days if they open up a few voids (voids aren't that large though and the carrier would have to support the small boys ie destroyers) but there are supply ships (not many mind you) but that could raise the bar a bit

So more than likely they are alive. The president, if alive, is probably on a air craft carrier. One question I’d love answered is! Would the military (navy, marines) be able to retake military bases so ships and planes can refuel? I wish the walking dead would show us the perspective from the military. I think that’s way more interesting than what they’re doing now.

I think the navy and the remnants of the ground based forces retreated to the islands and set up shop while maintaining contact with the remaining government who has holed up in bunkers and on islands. They are communicating on frequencies not accessible by people like Rick's group. I also think there is a mass safe zone in either the great plains or the rockies that is heavily fortified and maintained by the military. This is teased by the random helicopters that pop up occasionally. The military has regrouped and begun retraining to make only headshots in preparation for the grand finale of retaking the mainland. The producer's of TWD have made it clear that the show will have a happy ending and I think it will play out differently than the comic.

One possibility I always thought of is that, at least the US navy, sunk and crippled itself. Say, for instance, a destroyer captain tasked with screening the carrier decides that the admiral in charge of the fleet is going to get them all killed, so he decides to take his ship and go somewhere where he knows he and his crew will be safe. The admiral orders another destroyer to fire on the deserters, and things snowball as the entire fleet starts shooting at each other, with the survivors limping to an unfriendly port in crippled ships that are now out of ammo and probably not too far from sinking

If a fleet is on deployment or a battle group, there would be USNS ship out as well to supply them during deployments with UNREP's and Vertreps. Word would have traveled fast through the different fleet commands and ships at sea would stay at sea and look for locations that would offer the least amount of threats. Any USNS ships at sea would more than likely link up with any groups underway and help to provide supplies for those groups. Isolated islands, they would anchor out and send probably their VBSS teams ashore to identify local threats and to recon areas of opportunity. At that point, if their is an island that is manageable, they would take control and establish a defensive perimeter to deter unknown aircraft from penetrating the air space. A guided missile cruiser or destroyer would carry a host of weapons from SM-2 missiles to their MK45 gun mounts and 30mm CIWS, they are also armed with Harpoon missiles and SH-60 Helicopters. Carriers would also be very good to have at sea since they could control an airspace for many months while at sea. It could be easier then you might think to establish a clear zone somewhere in the Pacific. Many islands from the south pacific to the Aleutian Islands. Another thing regarding the Navy, it would still hoist the Stars and Stripes, we have an oath and we will defend it no matter what!!

Nuclear powered ships can run longer, but not all ships are nuclear powered, the vast majority are still diesel powered. And even in the case of the aircraft carrier all the planes on it and all the smaller launch vessels all run on liquid fuels, which will eventually run out. Food and medicine will be an issue, but so will berthing, most ships are usually deployed with full crew compliments, so there's very little room to take on any additional survivors. Ships like submarines only have enough sleeping space for 2/3rd of the crew or less, since one third of the crew will be on duty at any given time. Securing islands would be the best strategy I think. As for pulling into port, that is easier that you might think, just pull up and make a lot of noise, the walkers will be attracted and will walk into the water, once the piers and other docking locations are clear you can send in ground troop to inland.

Supplies will be the huge issue, as all supplies ultimately come from the land. And not just food, but fuel for missions, spare parts for planes and the ship itself. Next is the fact that people die for any number of reasons. If a carrier is running 12 on and 12 off as opposed to 8 hour shifts, If a sailor dies during their off hours and comes back, how many shipmates do you think he/she could infect in say 8 hours within the cramped quarters of a berthing compartment? You could potentially have enough undead roaming the ship to make it useless. Also, it's not like a navy ship has enough small arms and ammo on board to arm everyone. It is usually enough arms to arms the Marine contingent onboard.
