The Walls - Small Garage to Small Workshop

My small garage to small workshop transformation takes a huge leap forward with this one. Battening, insulating, and boarding up the walls to provide some sound and temperature insulation. I know there are a million things I could have done differently, but time and budget were hugely restrictive factors, so I did the best I can do. Time will tell if it works out!
Evolution Tools did send out the gazebo for free with no requirements from me, so I thank them massively. It's a great tent, and surprisingly robust!

Cracking idea with the plastic fencing as a backing for the insulation. You've got me thinking hard now of going the same way with my shed, can't afford to rebuild it so will insulate internally.

Mate, after watching this i remember why I said this is the last move when we retired here. Nothing makes a bigger mess than moving. Cheers

I personally really like your new shop, Dean. With a little creativity and some french cleats, you'll be able to get everything in the new shop. When we moved a year ago, my shop went from a 12 foot wide by 24 foot long shed to a 8 foot by 10 foot shed that my youngest son and I built completely from pallets. It took a fair bit of trial and error to get everything in but eventually it all fit, and is well organized. My Ridgid contractors table saw takes up 2/3 of the width of the shed but i can reach almost anything i need, from the work bench or the table saw. In the end i like the smaller space much better as i save alot of time not having to walk back and forth for tools.

Great to hear! I’m also finding that a smaller workshop makes you be more purposeful in choices of what to keep and get rid of

So far so good, Dean. At the very least, you'll have a chance to see what tools you really want to keep around and what isn't really needed anymore (although if you're anything like me, you'll not want to lose any of them).

As we say in the States: "10 pounds of crap in a 5 pound bag", saying it kilos-science just doesn't have the same ring. Looking good Dean, how about floor-to-ceiling storage and an L-shaped mitre/router/drill station on the back/side wall?

I spent some of the weekend organising tools into groups, then I’m hoping it Will guide the way for what kind of storage I’m going to need to make. I’m thinking a tonne of interchangeable drawers may be the way forward

Dean, looks like it's coming along swimmingly. It'll be brilliant and I'll predict that you're going to love having this new space just the way you want it.

Coming along nicely! My first reaction is that you have too many workbenches. I'd have an MFT (see Peter M's design) with cabinets/drawers beneath on wheels, so I could move it around. Your tablesaw, if it was on wheels would be easy to move in and out. As to ceiling height, you need it clear in the middle of the workshop, but around the edges you can come down a bit and use that as storage, either cupboards or racks for timber. I would be very happy if I had that much workspace 🙂

Hi, Dean, new shop looking good. Not know the size of your benches or table saw. But what about turning the benches 90 dec , with gap inbetween to put table saw and may be the router the other end. Then sheets can come in the door to the back wall storage and from there onto saw for cutting Ps all down to what space there is, Trevor, Broadstairs

You've done it pretty much the same way that I did my workshop. I used different materials, but the idea is the same. I used a breathable housing wrap to keep the insulation away from the wall, then some foil bubble wrap stuff over the top of the insulation to keep the room more air tight. In the UK you dont want a breathable membrane on the inside as you'll quickly end up with soggy insulation as it tends to be warmer indoors than outdoors here. In warmer climates it's the other way round. I also used plywood instead of OSB, but those were cheaper times... I could probably sell my walls and be rich, come to think of it 😂

Definitely! In the unlikely event it was Baltic birch ply, you could start planning the buying of your own island lol

Immediate build for me would be a lean-to outside, attached to garage. Big enough to cover some wood but small and cheap enough to build quickly. Maybe two feet deep and if the back of garage is open then the whole back width. Could be just a few feet high or shoulder height… or more.

Regarding storage on ceiling. Obviously you can't hang things vertically. for reasons you've already said. But what about tubes? of various thickness to slide things into. Or a structure similar to a palett. not losing too much head height. Personally, in one part of my workshop that is low, I just have timber nailed across the beams and slide things in between the beams. So you could store timber in it without Losing head height. Also regarding your dust extractor if possible, try and get that up off the ground on a wall. that will save you a lot of floor space. Thanks for the update all very interesting. seeing the way someone else copes with lack of space.

Hi Dean, hope your well, It's looking good mate, your doing a great job there, it takes time you will get there in the end. You have a decent work space to plan your work benches and to place your tools. looks like you added new electrics and I noticed you have a 16 amp socket that would be handy for your bench saw or planer that take that bit more power. Cant wait to see how you get on. As always a great video, catch you soon Take care

Love the new workshop Dean. It looks great so far. I'm in the process of building a seperate shed so that I can move the crap from the garage/workshop so that I can board it out as you have done. Mine is a 5m x 3m concrete sectional garage so I'll probably nick some if your ideas along the way lol. Keep up the great vids mate (but don't overdo it!)
