The Waltons - Season 9 Episodes 1&2 - THE OUTRAGE
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (64) born January 30, 1882, Hyde Park, New York and died April 12, 1945, Warm Springs, Georgia, is remembered in this episode as a man who loved all the people and its one of the only episodes where the good nights are not said by the family.
"The train bearing the body of Franklin Delano Roosevelt moved slowly from Warm Springs, Georgia toward the nations capitol. Where ever it went, the people who loved him gathered to mark its passing, remembering the man who led the nation out of its most crippling depression and toward victory in its greatest war. Planting seeds of brotherhood along the way...when it passed through Charlottesville my family was there to pay their last respects " - Earl Hamner Jr.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, commonly known by his initials FDR, was the 32nd President of the United States. He served for 12 years and four terms, and was the only president ever to serve more than eight years. - Wikipedia
*Ralph Waite passed away yesterday February 13th, 2014. I like to think that Will Geer (Grandpa) and Ellen Corby (Grandma) and all the rest of the late cast and crew members were there with his own family to welcome him home. Goodnight, Mr. Waite.
Here are a few comments from the cast of the Waltons and Earl Hamner Jr. (writer, creator, the real John Boy)
"I have just learned that we have lost Ralph Waite. This sudden news is shocking and heartbreaking. Ralph's portrayal of my father on "The Waltons" was so true, so genuine and so close to the real man that it is like losing my father all over again. Actors have great gifts to give and his gift to me was an image of my father that I will cherish always. Thank you, Ralph and Good Night." - Earl Hamner Jr.
"Ralph was a good honest actor and a good honest man, He was my spiritual husband. We loved each other for over 40 years. He died a working actor at the top of his game. He was a loving mentor to many and a role model to an entire generation. I'm devastated. - Michael Learned (Olivia Walton)
I'm a little emotional right now. It's such a shock. I don't think people realized the skill behind what he was doing. He had such a great heart. ... Ralph had suffered a lot of great tragedy in his life, but he always overcame it and was there for everyone. I just will miss him terribly. We were kind of like a celibate husband and wife. We never crossed that line, but we were dear, loving friends." - Michael Learned (Olivia Walton)
"I loved Ralph very much. He was a fine and funny man with great social consciousness and a big heart. And he was one of the most uncompromisingly honest men and actors I've ever known - a great example for a younger performer. Goodnight, Daddy. - Richard Thomas (John Boy)
"There are no words to express the loss of Ralph Waite. My friend, my co-worker, my "Daddy". You will forever live on in my heart and in the lives of all you have touched over your lifetime. We are lucky to have known you. R.I.P - good night. - Judy Norton (Mary Ellen Walton)
"The Waltons cast were all together for a lovely evening at Michael Learned's house in November. It was great for all of us to reconnect. Before Ralph left the party, he asked each of us what we were up to and if we were happy. I don't know if he knew this would be the last time we would see each other but I'm so glad we had the chance to spend this time together. R.I.P. Ralph Waite. ;( - Jon Walmsley (Jason Walton)
"Sad news to share. .. Ralph Waite passed away today. I will miss my other daddy. Good night Ralph." - Eric Scott (Ben Walton)
Someone asked me to post this again. Ray Castro put this tribute together. - Kami Cotler (Elizabeth Walton) • In Memory of The Walto...
To read more of the cast comments about Ralph, visit this Waltons website. There is no comment from 'Jim Bob' (David W. Harper) because apparently he is not on the internet.

My great grandpa was born and raised in Lexington North Carolina, he told me during 1945 when he was 7 or 8 years old, his family walked miles to see the FDR Funeral Train pass by Salisbury and he claims he witnessed a soldier, a marine, a sailor, a coast guardsman, and an airman standing beside of President Roosevelts casket. It's outstanding to hear such a story from your own kinfolk.

When I first saw this cover I thought it was about Kennedy. I believe there was an episode that dealt with JFK. Imagine a President where the majority of people thought that he was a good man who cared about them. Obama minus the Tea Party might have been that guy.Joe Biden can be with a lot of help.

This was a different era people grew up hard, great depression, 2 world wars on massive scale, many adults my late father included grew with the horse and buggy. Can you imagine where today people get upset on the interstate when I drive 65 and the speed limit is 70 if they all had to drive to work for one week with a buckboard, if you are young and don't know what it is it is a wagon pulled by two horses. Top speed probably 5 to 6 mph. Think about it ! !

FDR was president for TWELVE years, longer than any other president in US history. He was elected to an unprecedented FOUR terms, mainly because people were reluctant to elect a new president in the middle of an ongoing world war. For many people who were children at the time, he was the only president they had ever known in their entire lifetimes. FDR's time as president was parallel to Adolf Hitler's rule in Nazi Germany, from 1933 to 1945. Both men died in April 1945, a month before WW2 was officially over. FDR may have had some personal flaws, as does every person on this planet, but he did get this country through the Great Depression and WW2!

Mr. Hamner, I would give anything if you were still with us! I have watched The Waltons for nearly 50 years now and I believe it to be the finest show ever offered in the history of television! In fact , this show actually justified television as a medium! I have toured the wonderful restoration of your childhood home in Schuyler! It is magnificent! I long to have had such a wonderful family! I long to "walk down to Ike's!" I long to swim in Druisilla's Pond! I long to sit at that wonderful kitchen table!" I long to exchange "goodnights" with your family. I will long for repeats of this wonderful show as long as I live! Thank you so much for this precious gift!

My father was 5 when FDR died, but remembered enough about the funeral train coming through town on the way back to DC to tell my son about it 65 years later. At least Hollywood has it right in that it was the Southern Railroad that brought him back from Warm Springs.

@@zynoveousprime118 FDR was the most liberal President the US ever had. He is the opposite of Trump. Right-wing conservative critics called him a socialist for his "New Deal" programs. Bernie Sanders is the closest thing to FDR progressive policies. Are you aware of FDR's 'second bill of rights' and his plans for universal healthcare, social security, and promise of a living wage? Right-wingers oppose all these things. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3EZ5bx9AyI4.html Are you being sarcastic or just completely ignorant of the politics of our former presidents?

The portion with the car carrying the President’s casket was brief and a bit far off to see for certain but, compared to the still shot of the real event, it appears that the way it was recreated is pretty close if not spot on to the actual event. There were five members from the military representing the Army, Army Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, around the casket. It brought to life for me an event that I could only read about and study photos of. There are recordings of the radio coverage but I don’t know if there are reports of or from the train’s journey to Washington DC.

Say what you want about FDR, but you can't deny that he helped America get through 2 Major Events in our Nation's history: The Great Depression & World War II. While I don't like what happened to Americans who happened to be Japanese, as I believe that was done out of anger for what Japan did on Dec. 7, 1941, I also think he did the right thing with the Fireside Chats he did during that time when Americans needed comfort during WWII.
