The Wanderers (1979) - ''Leave the kid alone!''

A new guy arrives in town and lays waste to the feared Baldies in the underrated gang film THE WANDERERS.
The best moment is when Perry and Terror, the neighborhood bully, size each other up in a spaghetti western-style stare-down.
Do you think Terror backed down? Or was he just "waiting for the right moment", as Turkey put it?

I think The Wanders is one of the most underrated films by the critics. But it's got a great cult following and is reminiscent of not only the transition of the late 1950s into the early 1960s but the transition of the late 1970s into the early 1980s as well. I really love this gem of a film. It's rather poignant and on many levels holds a lot of meaning for me. Oh sweet bird of youth!!!

As a kid I used to think that Turkey was right and that Terror wasn't afraid of anyone, but later I realized he was afraid of Perry, he just had to handle it right. It was Perry who feared no one, which is why he took on so many of the Baldies (and Ducky Boys twice and stood up to Joey's dad) and spit the match out as to tell Terror "Let's do it" and Perry wasn't bluffing. Terror had to act like he was gonna let it slide but you notice he never seeks the Wanderers out once Perry is a member other than to drop Turkey off and abandon him. He only steals Joey and Richie away with his full squad when Perry isn't a round and wasn't a Wanderer yet.

Gareth Thomas It's a guys film like you say which depicts the time it came from, a real honest account, entirely honest in its nature. My grandad sat me down has a child to watch this. he was a teddyboy and my old man was a mod, my uncle was a punk. Big characters. The majority that don't like the film belong to the snowflake era. One girl i work with did a French accent and got told off by some young liberal for being racist! do me favour! I'm a traveller myself and used to get stick for it but you didn't get all bitter about it, you exchanged banter or you had scrap. simple. all races were the same, you would give each other needle but there was always a deep respect beneath it all. which this film demonstrated. Yeah the thought police with there terms have turned this era into one belonging to wimps. The worst thing is being brought up in many mixed race areas, there is no problem. only problem is caused by the posh left casuals who out from time to time from the rural retreats to hold up cards outside parliament

Erland Van Lidth had non-related interests from one spectrum to the other. Trained for the super-heavy weight Olympic wrestling team in the 1970s, was a trained baritone opera singer, went to MIT in the 70's for computer programming , as well as an actor, and had a computer business. I'd say he not only had an intense physical appetite but an intense mental appetite as well. That's A LOT of fields to be dedicated to.

2:01 I love how Perry has already disappeared. It serves two purposes - not only does it make him seem like this other-worldly force of nature but it also tells you that the Baldies are absolutely TERRIFIED of him. Even when he's not there, the very threat of Perry appearing again is enough to force the Baldies (in greater numbers, no less) to back down from a fight with the Wanderers. Just the idea of Perry joining the fight makes them change their strategy.

because they can't help not getting themselves into trouble, the book is better; in the book Perry's not as tough, two years younger and afraid of Terror who in the book is not the leader but only the assistant leader.

the warriors and the wanderers were both racing to release first. warrior's was released 1st both are classics. i still can't figure which movie i like best.
@80steen44
@80steen44 3 года назад
The Wanderers is better. The Warriors starts to drag a bit and isn't as relatable to people who haven't directly lived street life. A classic for sure, but The Wanderers is much deeper with it's story between Nina and Ritche and his world vs hers and the Kenedey scene and his reconciliation with Despie, and the coming of age aspect with your friends and friends going their seperate ways, and ultimately Ritchie accepting his heritage after feeling bad about when he knew he could never enter Nina's world when standing outside the hipster club of futrue hippies.

The actor that played the part of the leader of the Baldies 'Terror' was Erland Philip Peter Van Lidth De Jeude. He was a Dutch-American actor, opera singer, and amateur wrestler. Unfortunately he died at the young age of 34 in 1987.
