“Life is long. Take some pressure off yourself, enjoy the trip pay attention keep your eyes open on the journey when it’s ready to happen it’ll happen”
Steven Pressfield is the most well accomplished and humble person. This man is truly a Buddha and has no idea. I’ve listened to War of Art at least 6 times and it is THE most accessible, transformational books I’ve read.Changed my life.
I really think this is the best podcast for growth on RU-vid. Being still young (26) it's difficult to find people around my age that are willing to be vulnerable enough to show you that they're struggling too. So having these greatly achieved humans come talk about their blunders really is the best kind of company.
I soooo excited for your new growth. This makes me incredibly happy and grateful for you. Mistakes and blunders are air under our wings, not tree lines we're clipping and trying to avoid. If you're not making mistakes, then you're not learning. True gold does not fear the refiner's fire. So if gold rusts, what will iron do? I get sooo excited from this. Remember, God loves 💕 you and BELEIVES in you. Thanks 💕👍🥅💪🏋️😊🇺🇸🥧😀🍨🍦❤️
WAR OF ART. It's been on my desk for years. Read it so many times. It's been one of my guiding lights in my creative journey. I highly recommend it, and thatnks Rich for getting him on the show!
@@divineloverofbliss8933 I recently bought what I thought was an ebook and it turned out it was the audio book. I love it!! I walk daily and listen to this over and over.
The war of art has helped me change my life and become a better Director. To be able to have these 2 people who both have given me a path forward both in sobriety and a methodology for the expression of creativity combat the resistance to both. I feel blessed for this talk today. Thank you Rich and Steven.
Spoken with a few known writers in my time. That voice of resistance is there every time they start a new book. Then they start by reminding themselves they’ve accomplished this before. Just start with a germ of an idea.
As a painting tutor who is very experienced one of the first things I say to students is that there is a mountain of books out there on painting and inspirational subjects but there's only a handful worth having. The War of Art is definitely one of them. Many people think art is all about inspiration or genius, but like anything else success nearly always comes from dedication and hard work. Best book on tackling procrastination out there.
Everything I needed to hear right now... Trying to launch my business at the moment and the critic in my head keeps me awake at night picking my work apart...
This shows a different side of you, Rich. You are an elite athlete and your guest is someone who thought being offered a job on a ranch was hitting bottom. Bless your hearts.
I simply cannot commit the time required to watch all of every one of Rich Roll's place-personaly-powerfully-representative-adjective-here discussions with some of the most truly extra-ordinary, demonstrably visionary folks alive today. I watched this discussion from beginning to end. Then, I downloaded the book and began reading as I wait for my hardcover copy to be delivered. In the forward of Steven's The War of Art, Rober McKee discussed making a slightly different distinction regarding his position regarding Book 3, 'The Higher Realm' being more genetic than representative of a 'higher realm'. I agree with them both, experientially. As G.I. Gurdjieff oft repeated, "Work as if everything depends upon work. Pray as if everything depends upon prayer". I subscribe to no particular religion or other 'belief system', yet am deeply, meaningfully informed by all spiritual traditions, mythology's, and respective sacred imagery. I can authentically offer the following: the very first time one is definitively touched by the 'higher realm', whatever form in which this may take place, there's simply no going back. Once the door is cracked, it opens, and the light...Such Existential Being expansion remains, for good. As my teacher said to me after a particular 'personal' singular experience, "Good. The door is now open". Indeed. Thanks Rich and Steven. Be Well All.
the same here buddy i read the book/listened to someone explaining the whole thing and the idea stuck in my head and i couldn't forget what resistance is and how to beat its ass LMAO
I've listened to this about 3 or 4 times, and I've bought and read 'The War of Art'. What a difference it's made, but I get benefit from coming back here to re-listen, just to keep myself dealing with resistance and imposter syndrome. Thanks for this Rich🙏
WHAT AN EXCEPTIONAL GENTLEMAN Actually 2 incredibly exceptional men. Thank you for showing us that decency , respect , love , respect and hard work still count for something . For reinforcing the belief in the muse and the different examples of them through the ages. This was such an uplifting intelligent and enlightening podcast . Cant thank you both enough and all I can say is keep it coming and stay blessed . 🙌🏻❤️❤️✨✨✨✨🤗
"And it is only the mind that is really capable of standing alone, in the sense of not belonging to any group, to any party, any community, any set of dogmas, beliefs, conclusions, it is only such a mind that can be creative. I think we have to go into that question of what is creation, what is it to be creative ..." Yup, it's a quote from Jiddu Krishnamurti.
Rich, thank you for all that you do. I am a BIG Steven Pressfield fan but it’s because of great interviews like this that I am also a BIG Rich Roll fan. Thank you. 👊🏽
Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. ~ Calvin Coolidge
Had to pause this half way through. What an incredible conversation. I relate to every single thing steven is saying. Can not believe i haven't heard of the war of art.Life has been one hell of a struggle for me solely because of my negative procrastinated MIND. Been working on myself for a number of years, reading every book, exercising, meditating, cold therapy etc.. its so refreshing and a huge weight off the shoulders hearing other peoples stories with the same problem, that i am not alone. I cant believe he mentions the bit about washing the dishes and I'm standing here scrubbing away at mine. What a coincidence. Literally just paused the vid at this bit, phones all soapy and just bought the book. Cant wait to read it. Amazing
absolutely affected my whole idea of going after my creative pursuits! this book was awesome! read it four years ago, and have now been rolling along making my creativity central in my daily life... in large part to many themes in this book.
I am happy the universe connected me to Stephen via here then his podcast. Switching careers has me searching for deeper self realization of who I am. Just what I needed. My creative juices are flowing again. Kiaora!👋
War of Art initially got me serious with music and my project Ace Buchannon. I got over my "resistance" by knowing what it is and why it is and how to approach it.
What a great conversation! It is like 2 men became best friends in the first 5 minutes. And what a pleasure to listen to the two of you! Thank you very much.
I watch a lot of things of this nature, but this talk is truly gold. I've listened to Stephen before, but i mustn't have been paying attention because his ideas are a revelation. And applicable to everyone because they are to do with fundamental aspects of mind.
First hearing the title “the war of art” I instantly thought of “the Artist Way” “Resistance” brings Barbara Sher to mind She wrote & gave a lot of classes & formed groups about resistance I enjoyed this thoughtful & inciteful conversation
Steven was a HUGE influence for me as I began my own jewelry business 2 years ago. I can't say enough about how much he resonated with me and does. An absolute LEGEND. Thank you so much for having him on!
The things that hold resistance dont nessecarily provide the most value. Podcasting which feels easier and fun to do and makes Rich more money than writing another book.
Thank you both; Rich you have introduced me to gem upon gem of the best humanity has to offer when I’ve needed the push to grow again, but THIS, this gentleman, Mr Pressfield, and what he is saying is resonating so profoundly I’m literally buzzing. I’m so grateful...Cannot/will not wait to read The War of Art
LOVE the energy of this wise and gentle man! Watching this for the third time- still finding gems. Thanks Rich for having Steven Pressfield on.- Love from Austria.
Excellent discussion, Rich! It took a lot of courage on your part to acknowledge to Steven your own resistance felt as you wrote "Finding Ultra". Neither an Olympian nor an ultra winner, yet you knew that you had a message others needed to hear. As a "recovering attorney" myself preparing to launch my own memoir, I found comfort in your disclosure. Thank you. 🙏🏻
Oh wow! Now this gets my hyped. There is no book I recommend more than the War of Art. I regularly search to see if he’s done any new interviews and seeing Steven on your show in my subscription feed has me so excited! now time to give it a listen!
Levi you changed my life. I just want you to know that. One day I was listening to you about the resistance, I closed out of the RU-vid tab and ordered business cards for myself. That was 3 years ago and it was one of the biggest days of my life.
@@Levi_Allen it’s the truth man. I’m writing this to you in front of a job site where I’m using what I have learned about video to feed myself and my family. I remember the day I heard you basically give myself permission to start. Many other people had said similar stuff, but it was your voice and your video that finally made the beginning of a very journey “officially” begin.
Such a great title. Read it many times. I'd recommend to anyone. Especially non readers. It's super short with some chapters only a few sentences long. But its jam packed.
Artists Way Books is one of my faves. I find people who didn't get much out of the book didn't do the exercises "self inquiry" The morning pages are something I live by to organize the inner disorganization. I read the War Of Art and felt really invigorated me and was happy that I already had a set of rituals. Like the cold shower. Spend time in silence for an hour or more. But it definitely is true that tools on how to engage the resistance are god send. Re framing your resistance and just taking the first steps is really empowering. It can really show you where your at when your reading a book and feel. Aha! And really kindred to the information presented. Or oh this is tough for me to read because it's causing me to self identify with the lack of just getting on with what you want to do. I think I feel the same way. When people ask you advice on how to do something it could be giving your power away. Or it may make us feel why are we sharing with people that like intellectualizing and not taking action. I find if you just don't tell people just start doing it because you believe in it is the best way to get the ball rolling. Also on the Vegan journey since 2011 but I didn't tell the world I just started to do it and doing my research. Energy levels GO UP! Healing and recovery, stamina. It was 2 years later people started to ask how did you do it or that you shouldn't. But then just said well already did it! I just didn't tell you why or what my reasons were for doing it. Resistance such a teacher and make it your friend. Which sometimes can take form of your friends. So keep your circle and round table a supportive one if at all possible. OR sometimes it's true you take a hard break and venture off your path and meet the new friends that are where you're at. Funny thing is the person that suggested I should read The War of Art went our separate ways. Thanks guys! This is really inspiring showing up just now. Ride the dragon. ;) morning pages are such a great tool for looking at your inner progress. Thanks for such a great in depth podcast. J Mini heroes journeys!
Thank you Steven Pressfield for sharing your awareness and Art Of War with such genius and engaging elocution, empathy is always so endearing. Thanks Rich for the introduction. Much LoveD
I’ll get his new book once I can afford it - aka pay day next Friday! Thanks for your work RICH- I have been sober for many years now - you rule! Thanks Stephen
Oh man! I'm a HUGE fan of Mr. Pressfield's historical fiction (Gates of Fire is an amazing retelling of Thermopylae) AND I greatly admire Mr. Roll. Incredible convergence and fantastic interview. Thank you!
Such a blessing hearing this, the Universe answered through both of you, as this is exactly what I am going through and struggling... your words, your truth and honest heartfelt experience touched my heart and soul... I felt connected, supported and uplifted. Much gratitude 💕
Really great chemistry here…thank you. The cobwebs have built so heavily on me lately it’s absolutely unbelievable. This is a really important time for this book, resistance has eaten me alive during the pandemic
What an inspiring conversation. Feeling very motivated to finally pick this book up! Thank you so much guys for showing us this incredible side to overcoming what stops you from getting out of your comfort zone!
war of art is a great book i believe in Jesus has our lord!! Mr.Pressfield and i agree about harmony for all of us!! But i believe as Christianity to be humble and charitable has given me a life with explorer. This a great book and glad to meet Steven many years ago> Have a great life and give back to others!!
Wonderful to listen to as I grind away. Resistance hit me hard last winter. Every damn morning the same. But now I know my enemy's name I don't fear it anymore. Thanks guys.
Painter, graphic designer; firstly entertainment and finally, currently, wildlife conservation. Pressfield shines a brilliant light on the spiritual life. For me as a Christian the Resistance is simply evil which is quite a formidable force. There is nothing to do but confront this everyday and wait on blessings that are sure to come. We are all creative as Seth Godin reminds us. So the War of Art speaks to that. Victory comes to us when we never never never give up. Lastly notice how humble Steven Pressfield is. With 70 years of perspective I have no doubt you will all find magic in Pressfield's work.
All of this resonates! I left 11 year government job in 2008 when economy crashed. Comfort & security didn't do it for me. I let my condo go into foreclosure. Everyone thought I was crazy. I'd been going to design school for 5 years while working full time for government. Hadn't finished school, but I came to my breaking point. Starting doing acrobatics/gymnastics at age 35 at beach in Santa Monica with no prior experience. Wanted to be a gymnast all my life. I became one. People used to ask "what are you training for?" I replied "to be the best version of myself." Just like Rich doing endurance training, it made NO sense to people. I certainly didn't make money exercising 6 days a week under the sun. I got a masters degree in design. After 10 years in architectural design, it's time for a change. I'm going to live out of my van along California coast & become a floral design. I'm 50 yrs old. It's NEVER too late to change your life. Follow your intuition even if no one understands. It's the most liberating thing...
