The WASTED Potential of Assassin's Creeds Modern Day...

For almost as long as Assassin's Creed has existed, the series has struggled to find where the Modern Day exactly fits within Assassin's Creed. Some believe it is a core fundamental part of the series identity as it was in Assassin's Creed 1, while others would prefer to just get rid of it completely. Ubisoft's current idea to try and solve this issue is by putting it all on the Animus Hub Launcher (AC Infinity) to have a designated space for the modern day storylines going forward. Time will tell if this proves successful. I sure hope so because the potential of Assassin's Creeds modern day has been wasted for far too long at this point...

The problem with the modern day is there is no interconnected story anymore. From AC1 to AC3. That was the peak of modern day and the way Desmond's story continued into each game made it enjoyable. Whether it was Warren Vidic, to William to Lucy, to Juno and so on..

All Ubisoft had to do was basically incorporate what they did with the first and second Watch Dogs games into the Assassin's Creed modern day. If I was in charge of doing a modern day story, I would have the character start off working with Abstergo and they slowly piece together the secret war, they get secret messages from the Assassins and the Templar's become aware of your knowledge. The Templars then give you the choice of joining them or they kill you. Then the Assassin's break in save the main character and the character does there first Leap of Faith and thats the prologue of the game. The next part would be going into the Animus and doing the usual, but in certain intervals you will be taken out if the Animus to do modern day missions and you can choose to leave the animus to do Assassination contracts and other stuff, gain funds to buy weapons and gear, upgrade your equipment and practice your skills in the city your in or in the safehouse. Sorry its a lot but thats what i thought of.
@chillyman7340
@chillyman7340 17 дней назад
You have a good idea but you kind of miss the point a bit. The whole point of the modern day was to do more explaining than actual gameplay, this is why AC3 was so linear, With the ideas you have a lot of it has already been done lol. The problem is at this point I don't even think Ubisoft's writers know what to do with the modern day story. The modern day is so rich with content though there is so much they could come up with, Remember that there is still SOOOO MUCH that we don't know about the ISU and their technology and all their technology is buried or hidden. I would picture a modern day AC game being more like uncharted which is a very good linear game BTW, I would imagine that a fully modern day open world map would be a lot handle especially with how much detail they would need to add in but you have some good ideas maybe they will use them.😁👍

I’ve long been writing in my mind the full history of the Modern Day behind the scenes because to me it is the perfect microcosm for everything about his this franchise and Ubisoft’s handling of it, and by extension, gaming under massive corporate capitalism with all its built in dispositions towards mismanagement and constant contradiction, short sighted moves that get immediately thrown into whiplash and redone only to get misinterpreted some five second later and removed again. The worst telephone game, on four year time scales, between different dev teams and executives up top and endless middle managers. Its antithesis of creative vision.

I’m a bit of a historian and though I found the modern day for the most part kinda mid, But it did become interesting when the main character went on these little adventures and you get to see the comparison of old and new. Like when Desmond ventured around the Monteriggioni villa and you occasionally see Ezio and company escape thru the underground tunnel. Or when Layla Hassan went and refollowed Kassandra’s route thru the cave that led to Atlantis and it’s all drowned now. Even in the cave where Bayek and Aya are buried, you don’t get to venture much there but still seeing the burial spots of the 2 original hidden ones was just so cool!

I know a series of fanfics that take what was in the RPG modern day (and other games by extension) and reworked them to better interconnect them, along with the stories of the fics as well. The story is called AC: Outlaw and it’s tie in stories are AC: Empire, Conquest and a crossover called Nothing is True. I highly recommend them. Especially since Otso Berg and the modern Abstergo crew makes appearances in it as well-having a nemesis dynamic that the stories follow. I really like it.

It’s quite frustrating because you can look to the expanded media to see the different ways the modern day can be used. The Last Descendants trilogy has six teen protagonists whose collective ancestry represents an Ascendence Event involving the Trident of Eden, separated into three Prongs scattered across history and the globe. The Gold audio drama uses a race against time as well as a protagonist who has claustrophobia. The games set up a Juno cult, the Instruments of the First Will, who are a third party to the Templars and Assassins, and represent at points a great threat worth calling a temporary truce for between the historic enemies. The movie presents four Assassins who are descendants of previous characters from the franchise, the novelisation expanding on their relationships with their descendants (Nathan hates Duncan Walpole for being a turncoat, but it’s Walpole’s overconfidence coming in by bleeding effect that’s Nathan’s downfall), and Cal’s visions of Aguiler represents his growing acceptance of his genetic heritage. The only interesting modern day manifestations of bleeding effect come in with I’s ending and the one where Desmond experiences Altaïr’s memory without using the Animus.

Heres my take: Despite fans complaining about the modern day parts mainly from AC1 -> AC3 i feel like they should have continued being committed to the modern day story. Yes many found it boring but it was small parts of the game which was suppose to lead to a bigger story in the modern world. I remember seeing an interview from the voice actor of Desmond Miles saying how the ORIGINAL plan for the modern day was to have desmond use the animus to explore the memories of all his important assassin ancestors and end up learning skills from each assassin via bleeding effect so at the end he will be this super assassin and finally put down the templars. I think the issue with ubisoft is that 1. They caved in to the fans demands instead of making the writing better 2. They got greedy and realised that having a proper modern story with an ending means no more cash cow. Now adays it feels like the series is going nowhere, theres no progression or development

Me personally the modern day could've been better with unique and an interesting story that somehow can relate to past assassin's Creed characters but as we got many boring modern day characters with no interaction with the outside world and forgettable story or just doing assassination targets in the modern day yet they failed at that and splinter cell would've been perfect for a inspiration to make modern day AC as interesting and engaging as the past. This would've been a way to keep players playing in both worlds more often than not

Personally, I've always counted the Subject 16 files as part of the modern-day, as it explains so much about the world of Assassin's Creed, and how Abstergo, and the Templars are present in the world, and their effect on world events throughout history. I absolutely loved these conspiracies, as it ties into how Al Mualim mentioned how the Apple of Eden was used to do things like part the Red Sea or allow Jesus to walk on water. An example of this is how in AC History Nikola Tesla discovered his inventions with the use of an Apple of Eden. These files also have audio calls, explaining HOW Abstergo controls the modern world. How the general public sees Abstergo, and how they basically own so many random lines of everyday products. Using special Abstergo brand TV's to monitor people, or how even the antibiotics that Desmond's mother used were Abstergo brand. Following on that, this is where the Desmond Animus memory sections in Revelations shed more light on this, as Desmond shares a memory when his mother was explaining to him how Abstergo were the Templars, and how they control the world. Desmond remarks how he went "The people from the toothpaste/antibiotics?". The reason why it seemed so special to me is because of HOW integral Abstergo has made itself, to the point where even the Assassins use their products, because they don't really have a choice. This is why I personally feel that aside from the Modern-day in AC1, the Subject 16 files are the best piece of modern-day content in the franchise (and I do mean all of the Subject 16 files, so both AC2 and ACBrotherhood's files).

My issue with the modern-day story in AC is that a lot of key plot points were relegated to DLC and supplemental material that weren't the games. The whole Lucy being a traitor thing was explained in Revelations DLC, and apparently Layla killed her friend in Odyssey??? I have no idea about that story cause it all involved the Olympus DLCs. The whole Juno storyline, you know, the story that made it seem like she was gonna be the next big bad? Apparently, that all got resolved in a COMICBOOK. I think it was a big misstep relegating these plot points to content that not everyone is guaranteed to see.

I’m certain that the Modern Day Basim Story has been completely abandoned since Ubisoft’s completely regressed all of Modern Day into just being *A HUB MENU* to swap between Assassin’s Creed Games. They’re still going to conclude the current Modern Day Story Arc *BUT IT’S ONLY THROUGH A SINGLE COMIC BOOK.* Then Ubisoft will move on & just move the new Modern Day Timeline forward about 1000 years or so just to justify the permanent Pivot away from ever having to tackle Modern Day again. It’s quite obvious that for nearly an entire decade now whenever fan’s utter the two words “Modern Day” it immediately sends shivers down Ubisoft’s spine & they get a severe case of “Modern Day’s” & just hope that it’ll eventually stop.. 😒

The Modern Day plot was just as important as the rest of the game. Actually, I'd say it was the glue that kept everything connected. I say to this day Ubisoft made a huge mistake by killing Desmond off. I remember how people used to complain about him and the Modern Day storyline as a whole, but now they all miss him because something is off. Of course something is off, there's no connection between the stories anymore, we got a few random faceless and voiceless Modern Day protagonists that gave us zero sense of attachment, then we got the cutscene Modern Day in Syndicate, and truth be told it was better than the previous one, because we at least had Shaun and Rebecca, there were actual faces and voices. Layla was meh, I don't believe she had the charisma Desmond had and well, she just lasted three games. I think Ubisoft needs a sense of direction with Assassin's Creed, because it is currently a mess.

My only gripe is how underwhelming the templars are modern day the assassins make them seem like this big bad wolf but send a few guards with sticks to subdue Layla in Atlantis, I really want them to show how much of a powerhouse the templars are and even maybe play as another Templar one day, as Haytham Kenway is a really good starting point to see how he was raised and trained to become grand master

I keep telling people that the MODERN DAY is one of the most important parts about Assassins Creed, the animus itself has it's own history and it is a lot more powerful than we think, the other thing people keep forgetting is that the ANIMUS NEEDS A HUMAN HOST THAT IS IN THE MODERNDAY!!!!!!! there has to be SOMEONE IN THE ANIMUS FOR IT TO FUNCTION, the amount of lore breaking that Assassins Creed is doing now really hurts my soul. All Assassins Creed needs is a nice modern day game explaining everything, a modern day game that connects everything together and explains the stories, great video man.

I would say Brotherhood and 3 had the best modern days. Brotherhood you got to actually go to the villa, you were not pulled out of the animus that much so the story was interrupted, and Desmond got to use his skills from being in the animus. With 3 Desmond got to go on multiple missions showcasing his skills in parkour, stealth, and combat. Unfortunately the main issue with both of them was their endings regarding what happened to Lucy and Desmond and the modern day going forward.

I have a theory of what ubi is doing with modern day going forward...... First keep in mind how the original plan(as stated by i think desmonds or ezio VA) was that Desmond was going to be able to gain the abilities of Altair, ezio and connor, and somehow be able to time travel without the need of the animus. As well as him and lucy going to space. It was also mentioned how Desmond would be a time traveling ghost of sorts. Now with that in mind lets also take how in mirage there was that cut post credit scene of the antenna in the desert and people from the future saying something about an animus ghost and talking about our current modern age as ancient history. Ok, stay with me.....if we also take how the leaks for infinity hub said all the AC games would be able to be accessed from this hub and something about being able to use other outfits and assassin's from each game we'd own and play them in any AC game. So i think ubi is going to use all that and push modern day out of AC and make it more the future modern day similar to Watch Dogs Legion AC DLC. It'll have it's own story but might potentially be its own stand alone game set in the future were we play as assassin's in the future who are these ghosts and have the combined abilities(with future tech) that make them the best ultimate assassin. This gives them creatice leeway to play around with our current time as well as playing with the distant future.

personally, i used to love the way the present storylines intertwined with the past. however, when ubisoft decided to expand on ezio and give him a full trilogy, i feel like that was the step in the wrong direction (hot take, i know). i feel like brotherhood and revelations should not have had modern day settings to them and just focused solely on ezio’s story. the arc of desmond should have been preserved for future sequels like AC3 and beyond. instead, they finished desmond’s arc with AC3 and didn’t know what to do next for the present day arc moving forward. the rpg trilogy is somehow trying to rectify that, especially valhalla’s ending and a but of hints from mirage, but let’s see if they continue it for shadows. going back to my point, i have now come to appreciate AC for their efforts to portray historically accurate times settings. as early as black flag i stopped caring about the modern day story bcos i wanted to focus on immersing myself and learning about the historical era the games are set in. perhaps this is just me, but maybe it’s bcos i’m a history buff that i prefer it that way.

I’m probably going to get crucified for this but I feel like the movie had a decent modern day and if they were going to make a game solely based in the modern day they could use the movie for inspiration. I think fans are starting to forget that AC is SciFi with its story line and elements and there is a balance between the grounded realness of it and the sci-fi elements. I think a perfect example of this was with Basim’s Assassin Rush/Execution, whatever it was called. Now don’t get me wrong it still would have been cool to see Basim move through the environment super quickly and take out his enemies instead of teleportation. That’s why I’m interested in AC: Hexe to see what this new direction that they are going with is

Omg. Your idea about the modern story being about breaking out of abstergo for AC2 is fucking brilliant. That would be so amazing. All that work to finally make it outside into the real world would have been so rewarding.

A brilliant idea would've been that Desmond uses Abstergo in the beginning, and after some sequences he begins to feel Osmosis and see the Ezio's memories without animus (in this way they can explain how the game goes on while he escapes), maybe then with assassins their care of his health they can reduce osmosis and return to an animus like in AC2

I always prefer the modern day and ISU plotlines to the historical stuff, so I hope they don't ignore AC Infinity, tho I doubt they are going to devote much resources to a free service. That being said, the only thing more annoying than how Ubiosft treats modern day is people whining about how Ubisoft treats modern day.

I’ve played every mainline game in the series and honestly I’d lose no sleep if they abandoned the modern day altogether. I truly stopped caring after Desmond died and everything after that just doesn’t interest me except for the whole Basim thing.

Tbh there was "some" potential in the modern day from 4 to syndicate but it was completed in comic book run It's sad that it's concept wasn't fully realized in game as well

Before I even watch the video, my genuine opinion on how they should do it is if they have an excellent story (for Ubisoft's standards) they should implement it, but if they're not sure they have a good modern day story then they should copy Unity and Syndicate and just do cutscenes. I feel as if the modern day story is just as integral as the Assassin storyline in any of the games, and should at least be covered in every game in one way or another.

Honestly, the only game that handled the modern day interesting was the first game. I remember as a teenager when I first beat the game just being in complete shock and completely obsessed with the franchise at that point and then everything after that was a complete let down.

Ngl the modern day being ruined in ac3 was the fans fault. They kept complaining about the modern day breaking away from the fun parts aka the animus gameplay. So Ubi decided to kill of Desmond and added in the faceless abstergo employee as to have less time being taken up by it. I get it could get annoying but I feel like it only made the animus’s world and the stories of these assassins more mysterious and exciting to unfold. For example I remember when I first played ac2, I just watched ezio be born then suddenly I was ripped away and forced to play a 30 minute segment as Desmond. The entire time I was like “who is this baby? Why am I watching a baby being born? What year is it?” Back then the animus and it’s world felt so mysterious and odd. Idk maybe I was just a wide eyed kid but I’d like to think I’m not the only one that feels this

I say many fans of Assassin's Creed including myself dislike the modern-day segments because they interrupt the immersive historical experience and often feel less engaging or relevant to the main story.

I think that Modern Day story just holds back Ubisoft nowadays. It feels like they just want to make games set in historical periods but they know that starting a new IP would be bad financially so they just shoehorn Assassins there and call it a day. I love Odyssey for example but this game contradicts the lore in so many ways that it's just clear that Ubi wanted a Greek game but knew that it would sell better as an AC game so they put proto-Assassins and proto-Templars there even though it just makes very little sense knowing the story of Origins. Sure, we can pretend that they wanted to show us that there were Assassins and Templars earlier but I don't know, it just doesn't add up and feels forced. Later in Valhalla we meet Hytham and Basim but they also feel like an afterthought because they don't show up often in the story and also the story isn't really about Assassins. About Modern Day- Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla have VERY few segments where we even exit Animus. Sometimes you could even remember that there is Layla who controls given protagonist. Modern Day in Origins and Odyssey could've been cut and we wouldn't lose anything. They just don't seem to care anymore. Valhalla tried to do something more interesting in that regard but still it's nowhere close to the storyline of Desmond. We have to somehow let Ubisoft know, that we still want a good Modern Day story because it tied everything up in the earlier games.

Lucy was never meant to be templar spy, originally. She was killed off in AC brotherhood because of pay disputes. Kristen Bell, lucy's voice actor, got a little cocky and wanted a much bigger pay than what she was originally given and whether they refused to pay her because of penny pinching or they just couldn't meet her demands is unclear, but because of this they ended up killing off lucy so that ubisoft didn't have to use her anymore and the templar spy plot twist was the in canon explanation for why she was killed off. Which is why there was never any foreshadowing in AC2 or Brotherhood. The original planned ending had a lot more in store for desmond and lucy. But that ending never came to fruition.

Ubisoft has an opportunity to fix this through Basim, an ancient hero returned to aid the Assassins when they need it most. Unfortunately, we know they won't.

I always felt that the modern day should’ve had us playing as an actual modern day assassin who already knew that style of parkour, stealth, combat, etc. rather than being somewhat of an outsider looking in with the Assassins introducing us to their conflict… take the same mechanics we are playing in whatever Animus time setting and apply that to a modern world with its own map and missions.

The issue with AC2's modern day (as much as I loved it when I first played it) is that they can't seem to decide whether it's important or not. It's barely in the game to begin with (compared to AC1), and yet at the end Minerva speaks to Desmond, making the modern day the main driving plot point of the franchise.

We had splinter cell and watch dogs (AC easter egg) and those could have been mechanic wise a great starting point. I just don't think the writers are that creative anymore. I myself have been working on a similiar video. So what i have to say is assassin's creed modern day is a problem and they barely knew what to do after Desmond died. AC to AC3 modern day was amazing and Desmond's story the way it connected everything together into a good conclusion. But afterwards they didn't know what to do AC liberations and AC 4 and Rogue were us as abstergo employees and it felt like with Rogue we were building up to a new modern day templar villain in the form of Otso Berg but in Unity and Syndicate they for some reason no longer continued that story and it was now just find that piece of eden. And then we got to the rpg games which were restarting the modern day from the desmond story yet have no connection to it all except for William Miles, Shaun and Rebecca being there. And Layla had alot of potential but it was wasted then in odyssey's dlc it tried to bring back Otso Berg but Layla stabbed him in the spine with the staff of Hermes and Valhalla's modern day again got into a good build up with the reader aka desmond and layla meeting in some simulation while Basim was now in the modern day making some evil plot with Alethia while still acting like a member of the brotherhood. And mirage they didn't follow that story either but had no modern day. It's clear that after AC3 Ubisoft no longer knew what to do with the modern day and everytime they tried to restart it they at some point stopped following that plot or ended it off in a bad way. Abstergo entertainment's plot ended with Otso Berg getting stabbed. Pieces of eden plot didn't really get continued. And so far the rpg's are the second best modern day plotline i guess. But in my opinion they should probably just have on final big conclusion for the modern day as it does feel like a big conclusion is coming with Basim and Alethia teaming up to maybe bring back the rule of the ISU like what Juno tried to do before she got killed in a book. And desmond and Layla trying to stop another destruction of humanity with them kind of being adam and eve. It really feels like it should be one last big conclusion and then the end of the modern day plot cause it feels like that's what they're building up to.

The modern day story up to and including AC3 was amazing, great little bits of overarching storytelling that break up the chapters without being too long and distracting. Now playing through AC4 it's incredibly jarring because of the first-person perspective and it has literally nothing to do with anything anymore. I am glad they went back to it for Origins+, but they half-assed the everloving fuck out of it; Layla is utterly uninteresting and there's one whole sequence where you actually play as her as Abstergo finds her cave, then they somehow just leave her alone? I hope they don't give up on it entirely, but the way it's going now it adds nothing and just distracts from the games themselves.

It's simple, Ubisoft don't give a shit anymore, well companies and corporations don't care anymore, the modern day used to be the other part of the AC franchise, but now it is just looting and armors and xp grinding for levels.

i always loved modern parts of AC and am a firm defender of them. i love Desmond's story and his full potential we never got the see. i hate Layla though, so much. basically there was no modern story with her. it was just very short segments of her being annoying to watch and listen to, making all the stupid decisions, overreacting and overacting, looking more and more dark, brooding and obnoxious by the end, until she finally "bit the bullet" and got stuck "in the Grey". i hope we never have to interact with her again. i haven't played Mirage yet so i don't know what modern parts are like there, but we need a new modern protagonist and a coherent interconnected story.

I never played AC1, its the only game in this series i havent played bar valhalla, so I dont know how I'd feel about it's modern day. But I am one of those people who never really cared for the modern day. Like cool I get to stop playing as the assassin on the box so I can run around in a hoodie and fix fuse boxes. The modern day rarely did anything I wasn't already doing in the animus. . .only more boring because I wasn't an assassin. I appreciate the story they were trying to tell, but literally nothing comes of the story they were setting up. We never really see assassins taking down templars in the modern day, much less get to play as one. It always just felt like an interruption from the cool historical story I was experiencing.
