I like to think the Watchers are/were a early creation of the Old Ones. As like sentient pets or servants. Then the survivors fled to Caliban after the War in Heaven
@@keremmu makes sense considering their small size and likely weak physical nature. They're hugely psychic but if that were overwhelmed they'd have nothing to fall back on, meanwhile the orks are weakly psychic but massively physically strong. While the eldar are just in between: Fairly strong psykers able to put up a decent physical fight.
Something to note about the watchers: apparently they can only exist within a certain radius of Caliban itself, that's why they don't leave the Rock, and that's why when they accompany someone on a mission, said someone usually have a relic of Caliban on them.
I'd like to imagine a named character being on a dark angel ship for some mission or something, and a watcher just walks in and walks out and all the astarties are like "you feeling OK? Little space man? You should lay down"
“W-was that a Xeno?!?” “Brother! What do you mean? There is no xeno???” “But what was that-“ “There. Is. No. Xeno.” *An Interrogator Chaplain slowly emerges from the shadow*
Watchers in the Dark are the perfect companions for the Dark Angels. They're small so they don't get in the way, they're quiet so they won't say anything you don't want said(like with the fallen), and they're absolutely adorable to look at with their big robes and handling weapons twice their size.
I wonder what would happen if a harlequin ran into a watcher? Would the harlequin realize it just encountered a problem or would they try to have a laugh?
Funny how in HHL they’re classed as a ‘’Chaos’ Infantry’ units so I’m wondering why they’re assisting the duplicitous legion and not the Loyalist Alpha legion
I mean the game takes liberties on alignment as is, seeing as defence satellites and the like are apparently chaos exclusive XD I guess it also fights the best due to their psyker abilities, and not belonging to the imperial army or mechanicus Suppose they could be defenders of caliban or da but gotta share
Honestly I do believe he's a loyalist, pretending to be on there side. There's just such a strange conversation between malk and him while he was personally training to him to use his powers. And I'm sure you know that malk the Chad never did anything for no reason. And remember kids the imperium was his idea, not Big Es.
Considering the emperor is super close with The Lion and let's him in on knowledge he doesn't share with many others, it's easy to assume the emperor has met one of the watchers in the dark. Point being, what did that meeting look like?
The Watcher would waddle along doing its thing while the Emperor would probably sense how powerful it is and not fuck with it. The Watchers are pretty chill and fighting even one would probably be dangerous for the Emperor so he would consider them cautiously as allies of the Imperium.
@@bryanmcloud4121 inquisition is on the way to check you for heresy. Emperor is one who can kick Ktan's asses and mess with chaos god's. His psychic abilities is far beyond apocalyptic. @@Олексій-г1в fan boying hard enough? Custodes are peak physical combatants, but have nearly no defence against warp attacks (hence the partnership with the sister of silence), not to mention they would likely be aware, or find out quickly that nothing they do harms them. As cool as a officially returned DA Legion would be: I don't see the Lion forgiving Luthor when/if they meet. Luthors last memory (if I recall correctly) is the furious and ragefuelled face of his adopted son, so... yeah, doesn't seem like El'Jonson was in the mood to give any more foregiveness beyond a sword through Luthors neck.
in the book luther luther doesnt believe he will be forgiven merely stating only the lion may pass judgement, i think luther is expecting to die when he meets the lion again, to him either way he has made amends
Mysteries are the spice of a setting ! I’ve got this fancy that they’re waiting for the right moment to « recreate » a Caliban protected by reunified D.A. To replace Cadia as fortress against the eye of terror.
Ditto! Mysteries keep things interesting and exciting but, considering all the unknown things in the lore that GW has revealed in the last few years or so, I worry that questions like; what are the Watchers? Who were the 2 Astartes legions erased from history and why? What happened to the lost Primarchs, and all the other questions that keep the fans wondering and debating amongst themselves, will all in turn be revealed. Ending forever every theory voiced of such things and the imaginative reveries some of us would then walk in that world. They got Star Wars. They got Star Trek. They even got Tolkien..... I won't be holding my breath for their 'reimagining' of 40k to ensure that, "it better reflects the world we live in today ".
@@Pangolin-Mandolin GW isn't likely to do that. They may have some retarded business decisions in the past regarding their IP but they know for damn fucking sure that their readers and players are here for the universe as it is. Making alterations so that it's more "safe" will just alienate the player base, resulting in a net loss, and they know this. GW is retarded, but they aren't fucking brain dead. Sometimes you need to answer the mysteries, it won't break the universe, and after god knows how long, people deserve an explanation for some things, especially the missing Primarchs.
@@starhammer5247 Yeah, I get where you're coming from. Because, you're right, GW (although always keeping 3rd party access to their I.P. severely limited and restrictive) have made some questionable decisions about how to use their I.P.s and since the big shake up, a decade or so ago, they've been much better about when, where and how they do things (including licences). And, taking into account how super anal they've always been around that stuff, upon hearing about Henry Cavill and Amazon doing a 40k series, there is good reason to be optimistic. But, (and I hate to use this) look what has come before. The Tolkien estate was usually pretty strict on what could be done and not....now we have, "Women are always the best at everything ever, men are always stupid, aggressive or duplicitous and white man bad!". They did that to Tolkien! And at the same time proclaim (without a hint of irony or sarcasm) about how proud they are with what they created. Star Trek hurt. The, 'Rings of Power' actually made me angry. Henry Cavill has always come across as a class act and I just hope that he can put actions behind his words. But regarding, the lost legions....no!!!! Keep it a mystery where contradictory hints of their origins surface from time to time....😉
@@Pangolin-Mandolin Amazon also released Invincible and The Boys, those shows seem to be doing well. GW have already hinted that the Eleventh Primarch is held in the Dark Cells underneath the Emperor's Palace. They've released scraps of information on how the Eleventh was apparently one of the most loved of their brothers and how the Second was prideful for a Primarch. They're slowly unveiling the information for some sort of massive pay-off. There are some secrets that need to remain secret, such as the Watchers, but other secrets need to be revealed at some point. Also, as you said, GW is extremely anal about their IP. If some dumbass tries to fuck with Warhammer lore to push an agenda, like making Space Marines girls or gay, they will pull that fucking plug faster than Perturabo left the traitors when Horus fucked him over.
@@starhammer5247 Dude! Yeah, I forgot (the Boys, etc.) I guess there maybe is a bit of light at the end of the tunnel.... I get where you're coming from with the 2 legions. It definitely seems that GW is readying the stage for a, "McDonald's rerelease of it's Shesuan (?) sauce" type of reveal. Something people have been thinking about for a decade+ with uncertainty, suddenly being answered. Like you, half of me really wants to know wtf happened but, once they answer that, one of the biggest mysteries in 40k no longer exists... as much as I want to know, just as much of me doesn't at the same time. But, yeah, not all I.P.s adapted for the screen have been destroyed, so there is room for cautious optimism. But, with that said,.....The Rings of Power is going to act as a deterrent for a long time. They did that shit with intent.
The only one that gets hurt is Azrael's when he kicks it after he gets frustrated at it for talking. Also obligatory asking Majorkill for a Mini of the late Old Man.
The watchers in my head cannon are the eyes and ears of the old ones. The remaining old ones being too cautious about being active in the galaxy so they act through proxies with the watchers being there because perhaps the old ones see something significant in the Lion's future and they want the watchers to ensure he can reach whatever destiny awaits him.
"Where it stopped. A shudder - a rare sensation - ran down the Changeling’s borrowed spine, the shadow of an instinctive reaction born from its time wearing mortal flesh. Skin prickled and the servos in the illusion of its power armour whirred as its fists clenched. Around it, for the first time since it had set events in motion, Fate buckled There was something at the far end of the cell corridor. The Changeling could not so much see it as sense the absence of the aether around it. To the daemon’s warp-sight, the thing was really an un-thing, a black void without tangible thoughts or emotions to define it. The daemon tried to look upon the un-thing with Azrael’s flesh-eyes. It was diminutive in size, its form hidden beneath the thick folds of a bone-coloured cloak, as though in imitation of the Lion’s sons. The shadows beneath its deep cowl were utterly impenetrable, as dark to mortal eyes as its soul-presence was to the Changeling’s warp vision. It did not move. It did not have to. The Changeling found itself taking a step back, the daemon’s flesh quivering. Fear was something the Changeling could not feel, only feed upon, but the sight of the un-thing watching him from the shadows caused the daemon an indefinable, icy discomfort. The Changeling could not stay here. It could go no further. This part of the wider plan was unnecessary anyway, a mere addendum to the ritual that would carry the daemonic trickster away, and drag the Lions with it. The Changeling doubled back the way it had come, the cells untouched. Fate’s weave morphed, the future a newborn, fresh entity."

Coming back to this after reading Lion: Son of the Forest...I'm now pretty sure that the Watchers are connected to the Old Ones. They either straight-up _are_ Old Ones, or they're another of their created species. Firstly - the Ouroboros device that was located on Caliban was an Old Ones device; it seems likely the Watchers were placed on that planet to protect it. Secondly - the Lion's new forest walking ability is extraordinarily reminiscent of the Webway. A sub-realm of the Warp, through which it is possible to travel interstellar distances on foot. That the WitD were apparently able to create this realm for the Lion implies that they have greater knowledge of the Webway than even the Eldar, which in turn implies a connection to the Old Ones.
Honestly I love the Dark Angels for many reasons as they are my favorite Legion/Chapter but the Watchers in the Dark are one of my absolute favorite parts of them. They are one of the most, if not the most unique aspect of any Chapter. No other has anything quite as strange, mysterious and absolutely random as the Watchers in the Dark. They are a fascinating and unique thing for the Dark Angels that nothing else has anything close to.
imagine if it gets revealed that they are the Old Ones who managed to evolve into something new and then one of them pokes the Golden Throne and the Emperor gets to wake up from his ten thousand year long nap.
I imagine a new dark angel realizing he's being followed around by a Watcher and when he asks the others in a panic what's happening they just say "oh yeah, he's just vibing let him go about whatever he's doing"

The watchers remind me of the little green cloak wearing thing from final fantasy with his little knife and lantern. At first I was like "Aww it's so cute" until it waddled over and 1 shot my party member
In fairness even if the inquisitors found out about the watchers, they couldn't actually kill them and would have to kill the dark angels to get at them
Hey Majorkill. Would you please make some lore videos on the Imperial Truth, the Imperial Creed, The Ecclesiarchy, and the High Lords of Terra? Thank you.
I like to think "Watchers in the Dark" are a creation of the Old Ones. The fat frogs needed servants so why not create them? And after The war in Heaven ended, they could've just wandered The Galaxy, found Caliban and the rest is history.

Some legions see their Serfs as a honourable position with the aspirant gaining as much respect as the Spacemarine, however some legions see the Serf as an abomination and a disgrace to the legion, no better than a Servitor.

I know this isn't related to the video but I'm wondering which one is stronger a thunderwarrior or a primarus marine? However the thunder Warrior is supposed to be strong enough to take down 3 normal marine before dying. So again I ask which is stronger?
the primaris are about 1.5 marines. thunder warriors are more like eversor assasins: just up to the degree of dying. marines are there for long use and strategy, thunder warriors are burn through mop up. custodes have both the custodes and primaris benefits effectively at once. but are complicated to make
@@Chrisspru Thank you for the info. I love the Watchers. I always bring them in my army. Some call it a waste of 5 points. I call it a secret agenda! (Secretly I think they're cute and I like having them follow around their big chunky terminator buddies)
I personally like the thought of Watchers representing as the Chapter's manifestation of guilt. Caliban does contain different creatures that came from Chaos, and Daemons usually are a form of Humanitie's feelings manifested into reality. Now, the reason why I think this is cause the Watchers are only around certain Dark Angel individuals, both Loyalist and Fallen too in some cases. The guilt follows them everywhere they go should they accompany the Marine. As for why they're helpful, and not like Pyramid Head is because the Watchers sees them having the potential to change that, seeing as creatures from the Warp does have multiple representation of emotions, and destroying Chaos is one of the Dark Angel's desire and part of the Watcher's trait of the chapter's manifestation. Of course this is just speculation, but since not many people have mentioned this theory I thought to give my interpretation on these helpful companions.
The watchers are the perfect opportunity to tie in the War in Heaven to the current setting and lore of 40k. Having the watchers be servants of the old ones or, *EVEN BE OLD ONES THEMSELVES* would be such a good reveal, imagine the Dark Angels being the faction that holds the most Ancient race in all of existence. Imagine an Elder arguing with a Dark Angel and the Dark Angel just says "Your creators carry our helmets around"
Back in the days GW did a Doctor Who and Judge Dredd range they actually made subtle hints that they all exist in one setting. The Arbites are (ideological... mostly) descendants of the Adjudicator order (first established on screen in DW: Colony in Space/ Frontier in Space but later expanded in the VNAs) who in turn are descendants of the Judges of Judge Dredd. Even though the original gang of metal heads, weirdoes and anarchists behind writing large chunks of all 3 settings (pre RTD bullshit) aren't working for GW anymore a lot of the writers that are are their mentees and aprentices. Thus weird stuff like Ragnar finding a giant decapitated Dredd statue under the Navigator spire, implied appearances of the Gods of Ragnarok, the Ordo Chronos and their odd shaped drop pods and of course the Watchers (who are very reminiscent of the Time Lords in their first appearance in The War Games) keep popping up.
As a Fallen player I'm willing to reconcile with the Dark Angel's as long as I dont get tortured to death. Otherwise I'll stay out of it and keep rolling around with my brothers
I play as both DA and Fallen, I don't see them ever reconciling at least not largely. To many have went to Chaos even having Marbas as a Demon Prince. I think Cypher and Luther have their parts to play though. Luther desires redemption and who knows what Cypher wants (hopefully his book will shed some light). Also I am bummed they took away the Fallen as a proper faction/unit. Just Cypher now.
I’ve often wondered if the Watchers aren’t either a devolved from if the Old Ones, a juvenile form of the Old Ones or a previously undisclosed servant race created by the Old Ones. Then, while watching this video I was gobsmacked by another possibility, one which equally fits a different and long-held theory of mine I’ll share in a bit: What if the Watchers are demons of law, nature’s equal and opposite reaction to the rise of chaos within the Immatereum. I’ll add that this isn’t as far-fetched an idea as many might think. Michael Moorcock, a British author of the 1960s and 70s basically invented the anti-hero and was the first popular fiction author to abandon the good vs. evil trope by replacing it with law vs. chaos. As law demons were a thing in his various Eternal Champion series, albeit exceedingly rare and almost never seen. Perhaps they chose Caliban as a home world like Moircock’s Myaesha, the law demoness who assisted his most iconic protagonist, Elric of Melnibone when that dude decided to stop serving Chaos and actually went to war against the Chaos gods. Now, for the long-held theory I’m sure others have at least considered and may very well have discussed somewhere. I believe the Rock survived the destruction of Caliban because the Watchers made it so.
Ever since Malcador, Palpatine, a Nazgul, The Emperor (In disguise sometimes)... I swear cloaks are a thing for cultists or those wanderers trying to lay low.
Hey Majorkill, if you ever doubt your influence I'm 7,000 miles away and fifteen years your senior and you're my entry point to Warhammer. About a year ago RU-vid started recommending your videos, couldn't bring myself to click a Warhammer video. Six months ago I gave in on the condition it didn't escalate to videos related to game play or modeling. That lasted until about a month ago (so much lore). The game and modeling fascinated me as much as the lore. Had a bad day at work Friday and bought $200 worth of plastic crack. Had you not been such a gifted story teller I don't think I'd have become fascinated with the universe. An interesting aside, I was embarrassed for my wife to find out. I found out she collected and painted Warhammer fantasy before we met. My minis will always look a little better than they should because my wife is adorkable.
