The Wave (Permit & How to Find it), Buckskin Gulch & Toadstools - Utah | 🇺🇸🚙🏜️ 7 Month USA Road Trip (Episode 35)
Aloha Friends! Here's our 35th video of our 7 month USA road trip. We spent some days in the region and after spending a day in Page, we drove to Kanab to take part in the lottery to get the North Coyote Buttes permit where the world-famous wave is located. During these days, we also checked out some other amazing locations nearby. Enjoy!
‼️ In this video, we're going to explain how the lottery for the North Coyote Buttes works and how to find the wave. All infos may be subject to change and check the BLM website for the most accurate information. ‼️
✅ The hike starts at 6:21
ℹ️ Hike distance: 3.2 miles (one way)
ℹ️ Hike elevation change: Negligible
ℹ️ Hike duration: Ca. 1.5 hours one way
ℹ️ Valuable Infos: www.thewave.info/CoyoteButtes...
ℹ️ BLM Kanab Website: www.blm.gov/office/kanab-fiel...
💡Tipp #1: Plan your stay in the region to apply as many times as possible at the BLM in Kanab, except if it's more convenient for you to take part in the online lottery months in advance.
💡Tipp #2: If possible, try to get the permit during off-season (winter) and during the week (less people tend to apply then, which increases your chances to win). During winter, lotteries on Fridays may be held for the following three days, which also increases your chances to get picked.
💡Tipp #3: If you don't get the permit on your first attempt, try again the next day and check out some other attractions in the regions in the meanwhile (check out Episode 34, 35, 36 and 37).
💡Tipp #4: It's not allowed to split up your group, however, we recommend not to apply with a large group (e.g. 6 people). Example: If 7 out of 10 people (=permit slots) have been chosen already, only 3 people out of your group of 6 are allowed to go.
💡Tipp #5: Plan at least half a day for this adventure, the permit is valid for a full day and you may stay as long as you like on the stated date. The BLM recommends a 4WD and high-clearance vehicle to get to the Wire Pass Parking Lot. In our experience, this is not necessary as long as it's dry. After rain, the access road might get muddy and you get stuck without a 4WD.
💡Tipp #6: Get the mentioned infos from the BLM and from www.thewave.info to find the Wave and all the other cool places in the North Coyote Buttes area. Probably, you won't have any cell connectivity on the hike so download all the infos in advance.
💡Tipp #7: It is easier to get the permit for the SOUTH Coyote Buttes instead of the NORTH Coyote Buttes (where the Wave is located), as significantly less people apply for this lottery. At the BLM, they told us that the scenery and rock formations are at least as beautiful as in the north.
💡Tipp #8: For the hike: Take enough water, food and sun protection with you and memorize the way to the wave so you can walk the same way back to your car. Inform a friend that you do this hike and if he doesn't hear from you after a determined time, he informs the officials that you got lost and that you need help. Probably, you will be all alone in the wilderness on this hike.
💡Tipp #9: As there is nobody around to take a picture of your whole group, you'll likely have to take one on your own. Take a camera stand / smartphone gimbal with you, most smartphones and cameras have a countdown feature for a situation like this.

I visited the North Coyote Buttes in about 1986. It was just an after thought after being blocked by unknown depth but very long & very muddy pools in Buckskin. Finding a badly decomposed cow in one of the pools didn't help things. Back then there was a lot more rain so a lot more mud. Anyway went up the Coyote Buttes. No permits, no signs no permits. Not termed the wave...just another piece of strange rock of AZ?UT. I recall some exceptionally beautiful curved rock which may or may not have been The Wave. A lot more of an unknown adventure but also a very much a hit & miss since you had no idea what was there.

Hi. Question on the secret wave. Did you start the trail off wire pass or buckskin gulch ? If on Buckskin Gulch was it towards Lees Ferry or the other option towards road 89? Could you provide some advise as to how to find it ? Thanks.
@leemiciadventures7309
@leemiciadventures7309 2 года назад
Hi, thanks for the question - we started off at Wire Pass (same spot like to get to the wave) - you just have to follow the dried out wash for around 30', hike through a slot canyon and get to the intersection. Then head to the left towards road 89 and watch for a broken wire fence after smth like 20' or so. On Google Maps its around the coordinates 37.031634 -111.999934 - good luck

Phenomenal video. I did not know that you can actually visit the Wave without a guide/group. How did you guys do it?

Hi, thank you. That was about a year ago in mid march (just before the lockdowns). It was perfect for this hike, nice and warm when the sun was out (around 60-70 degrees / 15-20 celcius). Little chilly at night. Take plenty of water and sun protection with you in any case ;)

Great Video and music! How long far away the secret wave from the ending of Wire Pass trail? And is there a spot you can clime up to the ground? I am planning to go there and search more info.
@leemiciadventures7309
@leemiciadventures7309 2 года назад
Thanks :) It takes some time to get to the spot where you can climb up, like 20 minutes or so. Look for the old wire fence that you can spot from down below. Good luck ;)

@@leemiciadventures7309 Thank you. Hopefully we can walk this trail and find the secrete wave. You were so lucky to win the lottery! I am planning for 3 days activity around Kanab just in case we cannot get the permits to the waves ( this could be in very high chance:) )

@leemiciadventures7309 2 года назад
@@weiqunli4724 yeah, staying in or near Kanab for a couple of days is a good idea for sure - Page, Bryce & Zion NP are close as well and worth checking out. Good luck with the lottery (you don't need the permit for Buckskin Gulch by the way) ;)

Well done! Approximately how long was your hike from the trailhead to the Wave?
@leemiciadventures7309
@leemiciadventures7309 3 года назад
Thanks! The hike took around 1 hour (1 way). The Wave isn't that hard to find but it's not that straight forward either. So in case you got the permit (?) we would advice you to reserve plenty of time, print out the map and learn the route in advance, especially if you want to check out the other amazing places near the wave. Enjoy!

Do they allow drones?
@leemiciadventures7309
@leemiciadventures7309 3 года назад
I believe in the North Coyote Buttes area no (not sure, therefore we didn't fly there), out in the wilderness you can do whatever you want, just use common sense and stick to the usual FAA drone rules ;)
@billybrown5455
@billybrown5455 2 года назад
@@leemiciadventures7309 Drones are not allowed in designated wilderness areas. Turning left after Wire Pass and out of the canyon is still part of the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area... clearly defined. Please do not fly drones here, or any wilderness area. Designated wilderness is not "do whatever you want" land... quite the opposite.
