💥THE ART OF LEARNING JIU JITSU 💥
🥋By x2 World Pro Champ & BJJ Black Belt Kit Dale
________
✍🏻TESTIMONIALS
“It's honestly by far the greatest content I've seen on BJJ and I've bought, watched, and read over 50 hours of content in just this year alone.” Antoine B.
“Kit Dale’s conceptual approach really works for me. As someone who only started training late in their early 30s it feels like a much more efficient way to learn. Which is important considering I have to scrape together hours to train each week between work and family commitments.” Cam G.
"I watched volume 1 of The Art of Jiu Jitsu. Then I went to class and instantaneously performed effortless sweeps and maintained my base in every roll. I am shocked at how 3 principles stated out loud improved my game." Sean R.
"The approach to Jiu Jitsu outlined in your videos are pure gold. Kit Dale is the Tim Ferris of Jiu Jitsu! Thank you for putting this out. I have a new plan for learning and to teach my wife & kids." Mike K.

Man. I 100% agree with you! I am pretty new to the game, one year in. And every day I think about how I would teach a technique or a method in my head. I would much rather prefer concepts than techniques themselves.

I like “the play with it” aspect of your teaching technique. I have a hard time learning by simply watching. I have to know why I’m doing something and then I have to take it apart and put it back together again so I know why it works and why I’m doing it. I’ll sometimes close my eyes during trading so I can shut my head up and “feel” the technique through without any editing. Thank you for your post!

Makes sense to me. OSS. I am 57 and have previous injuries......finally just told my coach, I cannot do many of these "warm up" drills and will do my own warm up an come in when we are doing techniques and rolls.

Agree with everything you said but one counter to the warmup idea may be that beginners would use this as an excuse not to learn the vital skills necessary for Jiu-Jitsu and complain of injuries when really it's just their bodies haven't adapted to the movements yet. I used to dread forward rolls when I started because I was very stiff, looking back now I'm very happy doing them was not optional.

Struggling 55yo white belt...everyone is passing my up, stuck and trying to power through the mental breakdown and physical inabilities. One student that started the same day I did, is ready for his purple belt. Highly respect my coach and being patient with the system, but... he is one to give you the concept and it's up to the student to apply it. All of the other students seem to progress accordingly. Just not me. ALWAYS getting smashed! He keeps telling me to fix my head, and the progression will come.?? It's been 2-1/2 years. My head still not working!!! But...I love doing it, even though I can't tap anyone. Thanks for the vblog Mr. Dale!!!

I'm an old guy, brown belt, and I just love to roll and enjoy myself. I know 'drillers are killers' but I don't give an f; I learn more by experiencing and learning on my own by rolling. If and when I get tapped or my partner does something cool, I analyze it and question him about it; I've learned a lot this way. Plus I'm a blue collar worker who busts his ass at work, I don't need to get killed with crazy ass warm ups like the kids who just smoke pot all day on the couch playing video games.

54 year old brown belt myself. I actually enjoy the warm ups if I'm in shape and prefer drilling a technique I'm trying to incorporate into my game. But the most crucial part of training for me is getting the right partners to train with. Young gung ho blue belts are NOT good training partners. I prefer higher belts and larger opponents so I can't rely on my size and strength (I'm 6'3" and get over 260). I work a desk job (engineering in the biotech industry) so I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum. It's hard to switch from thinking science and engineering all day to jiu jitsu.

I really think it's about what you want out of it. If you're a competitor, you need to learn it right, right now. You have no time for the "let's just roll" mind frame, in my humble opinion. Now if you're like me (I'm old and just love every aspect of the game ,except guard pulls, lol) not competing and just growing, you can learn any way you want. You're on your time. Now this is my .02

I think some of his teaching concepts are great for everyone, like positional sparring and more live drill with a very specific goal. But some of his other concepts are mostly applicable to advanced students and not beginners. You have to know the basics and perform them in a controlled setting before you can start to play with the basics and perform in an uncontrolled setting.
@Jonobos
@Jonobos 11 месяцев назад
You are entirely backwards. They will learn the basics so much faster in goal based training, and once they are more advanced spending a little time drilling is actually useful. Drilling for beginners is almost entirely pointless and that is why it takes everyone so long to progress. Just watch, as this method spreads it is going to become more and more common to see really good people in a few years.

@af4396
@af4396 Год назад
I think that's fantastic except for the warm up part. I enjoy doing specifically related BJJ drills, no matter how much, it's always good to make sure things like your break falls are on point and practiced, for example. Gymnastics and lifting weights can be done on own time, but BJJ class should be for BJJ, and the good thing about BJJ is it involved the entire body, so most drills and warm ups cover a very large spectrum of movement and control, while directly training foundations. Love the rest of it though! Situational sparring is underrated.

I like your videos. You have renewed my faith in the system being taught where I train. I knew my teacher was world-class as he's trained many professional fighters. But I couldn't understand why the structure of the class was so different (not a lot of drilling, lots of rolling and individual correction). Your video helped to explain it in a way I hadn't considered. Thank you

@joshuakeeler82 5 лет назад
Good. Ricksons guys train a lot in silos with experimentation first then answers second, then drilling only that position or concept. But most people are taught by wrote in the bulk class. There is a section of most gracie schools that allows for all the things mentioned above. Its called a private lesson and most school owners will monetize their "micromanagement" and tailoring of techniques to the people willing to pay for it.

Nice video, Ben Askren had the same ideas on a JRE episode and I think you make good points. Did you get your black belt in 4 years in a traditionally structured class? any advice for a white belt attending a more traditionally structured class and getting the most out of it? When we free-roll, sometimes I avoid using the techniques we just learnt and instead use something I've seen on RU-vid or learned in a previous lesson and it'll catch people off guard. Also helps me learn the right timing of the technique instead of just repeating the same techniques.
@uralwong799
@uralwong799 5 лет назад
That's not what I remember Askren saying. I thought he was saying BJJ should be more like wrestling which is drilling the same thing over and over again until you don't have to think about doing it and more cardio. As a white belt myself I find I learn just as much from going to open mats as I do from the traditional class. As after you roll you can analyse with your partner what went right and what went wrong and go back to significant positions and try them again to make an improvement. The other thing we do is play "chess". That is where each player takes a turn to make a move. You get as much time as you need to think about what position you should be going for next.. You figure out that certain moves won't work and what will so that when you do it in real time maybe you can make better decisions faster. I hope I've explained that well enough. Hope that helps.

I agree with most of your concepts on learning :) you’ve definitely done your research! However I think there is a lot of merit in taking time to habitually drill basics/fundamental movements and positions... maybe not something as rudimentary as front rolls and shit lol. 30-40 minutes a day even just on your own time with a grappling dummy or your girl or mate or whatever. Especially with arts such as boxing, wrestling, etc... where there aren’t really that many deep elaborate movements or systems but just a few techniques that have to be mastered and manipulated into your own game. TLDR: Drilling the basics is very helpful imo, even if only for a short amount of time per session. That’s just my blue belt 2 cents :P Much love from Maryland, USA

Great vid. Such a shame that most bjj instructors have no idea of how to teach. After hearing 2 different school instructors say " just practice the techniques i show you in class " during live rolls, I refused to take another gi bjj class. Most of these schools just want clones who will mindlessly pay some overinflated fee every month with the blind hope that the instructor will give them that magical black belt one day. So much misinformation and time spent around people who actually prevent you from progressing.

We switched to this method in my school about 3 months ago and the rate of progress is hard to believe. I see notable improvement in weeks not months. Techniques are stupid anyway. If you actually understand jiujitsu there are not that many. How many times to you need to drill an armbar? There is only one way it works no matter what position or how you set it up. You control the upper body and shoulder, apply pressure to the elbow to cause hyperextension. Knee bars and ankle locks work on the same principles. Toeholds, omaplatas, kimuras, heelhooks, etc are twisting joint locks and they share mechanics the same way. You can do the same with sweeps, pins, whatever. It is all the same thing and you can't actually effectively learn any of it through drilling.

It’s difficult but not impossible. When it comes to drilling I wouldn’t drill anything past being capable of attempting it live. Then try to figure out the concept or why behind the technique and use different applications to do the same job. That way get a good understanding of the principles and body mechanics without creating pre shaped habits
