Great analysis 👍 Please I wish to understand the scene in the chocolate House. Secondly, what is Congreves' rationale for taking his actions to these different scenes?

Thanks a lot . Will give you a short explanation on the major actions taking place in the Act 1. Act 1, Scene 1 of the play opens with the conversation between Mirabell & Fainall at the Chocolate house. They are engaged in playing cards and Fainall has beat Mirabell in the game. Mirabell lost interest in playing further, so the two men started talking about various matters. Mirabell talks about his visit to see his lover Milamant last night & also explians things happened there. Later through Fainall's reaction, it is revealed that Mirabell once courted Lady Wishfort. He did so to get close to Milamant and also to impress Lady Wishfort. Because Lady Wishfort holds half of Milamant 's inheritance. Fainall leaves the room to watch some other card players. A footman enters & inform Mirabell that his servant Waitwell got married. All these things are happening according to Mirabell's secret planning. So Mirabell seems happy. Later Fainall returns and encourages Mirabell to marry Milamant. Antony Witwoud & Petulant, two men who wanted to marry Milamant is also presented there. Further informations is added about Mirabell's uncle who is coming to court Lasy Wishfort. At the end of this play, these men leave the Chocolate house for a walk in the park. This is the answer for your first question. Moving to your second question, Congreve shifts the settings of various acts inorder to represent the real life style and living condition of the aristocratic people in the restoration period. The actions are taking place in three places; in the Chocolate house, in St. Jame's Park and in the home of Lady Wishfort. Congreve used these places inorder to portray the real image of aristocratic English society. The choclate house was used to represent socialization & entertainmental factors during that period. St. Jame's Park in London is a place where upper class people walk for dinner. The park here stands for something having freedom in the Restoration period. I think it's clear now.
