I'd be interested to see your opinion on the 12 Swords from Katanagatari (as well as perhaps the main character's swordless style swordsmanship) The designs range from very practical to very ridiculous. Keep up the great vids!
I am not arguing against your breakdown of Ruby's scythe but I would like to point out that in the 'Red Trailer' you can actually see a fourth form for her scythe (compact, rifle, scythe) and it is that the head of her scythe opens up fully changing it from a stereotype scythe into a war scythe, unfortunately this form is very rarely used.
Blake's weapon, Gamble Shroud, does break more often than anyone else's weapon, a different it does tend to be broken along the hinges. And also, the sword the jets from the scabbard belongs to Adam, who uses it because his semblance (magic ability) is to store ke etic energy and release it all at once in a wave like attack, which is what the swords quick deployment is for. Sadly, nothing ever comes of Adam.
i saw an entire video "review" of the weapons that boiled down to "this one sucks, this one sucks, this one is fucking stupid, this one is passable" but formulated into an essay for each one that only bothered to talk about the bad things.
On historical use of scythes as weapons, I believe it was actually done by farmers to protect their land in case of weapon shortages, but usually the scythes were then modified to bring the blade in line with the shaft/handle, thus resulting in something somewhat similar to a more conventional polearm. And I do believe Ruby's scythe has been shown to be capable of shifting its blade to a similar position.
after this, youre definitely gonna get more questions about gunchcucks or an assault rifle that turns into a guandao/trident or the large Gatling gun in a suitcase
I do like that he actually brought up the structural weaknesses in some of the weapons, like Gambol Shroud's linkage that actually becomes important in the later seasons
What's kinda interesting is that Ruby rarely uses her scythe at all. She tends to stay back and provide sniper support for her more close-combat focused allies. It's established as a restrictively difficult weapon to use, to the point that there's only 1 confirmed "master" of it, and even he prefers to just use a sword in most situations. Also cool scythe fights are probably hard to animate and choreograph.
I think an important thing to note with Cresent rose is that Ruby has been shown using the recoil to create momentum to swing it. Of course that doesn't change the fact it's still ridiculous but I do like that the show presents moments like that to give us an idea of the ingenuity of the characters
Something else about Ruby's scythe. In several fights throughout the show, you can see her pivot the blade to be in line with the handle, like a warscythe. And she also uses the back end as a hammer in some instances.
Unexpected, but great at the same time. I have been following RWBY for some time and I do like their concepts. And thank you, Marcus Vance, to not be too much of a typical "Shadiversity historian" and at the very least find some functionality and positivity in the design. You earned a subscriber man. Note, I'm not against Shadiversity, however, there are some points where he may be a bit too harsh, but I generally know that he won't go too far.
I’m really glad with the approach you took with this video. Enough to say that: “Yeah we can’t use or make them today but theoretically with specialised training or future technology that the designs could be feasible and useful.” It’s such a nice change of pace where other content creators will either ONLY praise and worship or degrade and hate on certain weapons, designs or martial arts. Keep it up! :D
I miss when RWBY was just a dumb fun show about cute amine grills in amazing action sequences. Yang's Ember Celica were always my favorite, especially in that scene when she punches the shit out of that giant bird's mouth; it was badass. RIP Monty, we miss you
I mean, it wasn't just grills in action sequences, it was also pretty good world building and a shockingly hard magic system, but that was in the background and often shown rather than told. Then all that was thrown away. RIP Month Oum.
@@haidbz the magic system in rwby was nowhere near hard. The full capabilities of dust are never elaborated on, anyone can have a completely unique semblance, and that's not even getting started on the vague magic ozpin and salem use
i dont get where your going everything that happened after monty death as hinted at by monty in early seasons it was allways meant to lead into salem and the fairy tail stuff the entire premiz salem wicked witch of west , glednda witch of the south, james tin man, wrow scareqrow and oz ozpin it one those shows where the begining snd end were planed in advance
How about taking a look at the weapons of Borderlands 3? One thing they really did well in that game was giving each of the weapon manufacturers distinct design philosophies and weapon features. Everything from high-end weapon systems with integrated energy shields and reverse recoil action to literal space cowboy guns and weapons with "smart bullets" that allow the wielder to "tag" enemies and subsequent rounds fired automatically homes in on the tagged enemies as well as weapons capable of firing elemental bullets with flavors such as fire, electric, cryo, radiation and corrosive. The most interesting weapons in my opinion is the unique and the legendary. In those categories you can find things such as a sniper rifle that fire a tight cluster of five bullets with each trigger pull, a fully automatic sniper rifle that fire special rounds that split into two after traveling a specific distance and my all time favorite:the pistol that fires explosive hot sauce bottles instead of standard bullets.
Good observation about how the folding blade on Gambol Shroud makes it particularly vulnerable to breaking. RWBY characters have a sort of supernatural power, "aura", that works like a forcefield over their bodies and weapons. This means that their weapons are effectively invulnerable, and don't have to worry about structural strain... until they run out of aura from taking too many hits. When Blake tries to block with it after an especially close fight that exhausted her aura, the blade snaps in half.
Great video but only complaint is when you talked about Weiss's Myrtenaster you called dust magic, according to Rooster Teeth magic doesn't exist, but only in the case of the season maidens
This was really cool, its nice to see more insightful RWBY commentary and I really enjoyed all the breakdowns and trivia! I'd definitely recommend getting back into the series, some weapons have been upgraded, and the story is just fantastic! One fun thing about some of the impracticality with some aspects is that its compensated for by Aura reinforcing the weapons, which addresses some of the concerns too which is neat :D
Such a great video, I liked the way you explain how the weapons would actually work, it really helped me understand their design. It'd be great to see a second part covering other weapons such as Phyrra's spear or Nora's hammer, and maybe Professor Oobleck's flamethrower thermos
YES!!! my wish from last time has been heard! thank you Marcus!!! I would love to see more covering more RWBY weapons like Sun's weapons which is a bo-staff turning into a nunchucks which are also fire weapons there are more cool weapons, cool robots/androids and so on! thanks again for covering the weapons of Team Rwby Marcus!!! Bloody appricated it
when you talked about some of her moves involving ballet and dance aspects. you can thank Monty for that, as he was formally trained in dance and martial arts, its what allows his combat to be so great, he know how the body moves.
Surprised you didn't mention the similarities of Gambol Shroud (last weapon) to the Japanese Kusarigama. That aside you could probably do an entire series on the weapons of RWBY...they've got a ton of crazy designs but most of them also have a good deal of realism to them as well (up to a point of course).
My thing with Blake's weapon is that it is perfect for fighting Grimm and humans, because you don't really aim to kill humans only injure and contain, not to say you can't kill.
My gripe with a lot of RWBY weapons is that to make them fully collapsible they had to put folding mechanisms where they're not supposed to like right in the middle of blades, barrels etc. I get the rule of cool is a thing and all but the balance between form and function heavily skews into the former.
I think my biggest issue with Ruby's scythe will always be the fact that it's made up of two parallel blades rather than a single one. This ruins the cutting power of it by a ridiculous amount but I guess it helps it fold better?
Yes I'm fucking happy someone finally talked about. Obviously I'm hype for it it's me. Crescent Rose is basically a huge sniper with a scythe as a bayonet. In the future with some advanced materials the folding mechanics "might" be structurally sound. Definitely has to be smaller, my scythe is Seven feet tall Ember Celia is technically a better form of a gauntlet or brass knuckles. The missiles/buckshot aspect are a little more unrealistic obviously. I think Blake's Katana Glock is the most realistic design. The folding will make the sword a bit weak, but it's probably the most realistic, just a pistol with basically a wakazashi on the slide. Definitely possible with stronger materials in the future
I hope there's more Analyising weapons of Rwby of other characters. Like Velvet with the Camera. Or Coco and that Suitcase of cool. Theirs Neo who has a sheathable blade in a umbrella ... Where have I seen- Jaune has a sword and a shield. Pyrra has a Spear Sniper and a shield. Lionheart has a Shield of Dust. I would love to see more characters just a full blow through by character name (alphabetical or 'Rule of Cool' or viability) . I don't think there will be any new weapons in volume 9 so... (I'll eat my words if there is) But yeah. More would be nice
Love the nod to metal gear. Seeing that sword for the first time when i was a kid was one of the coolest moments in gaming for me. I honestly wish there were more over the top games like that published now.
One thing I haven’t seen mentioned is the fact that folding blades are completely practical in universe due to the fact characters can enhance their weapons with aura, of course when they run out then it’s an issue
Odd thing about RWBY; the characters are all strong enough to lift trucks. Because of that, they can easily handle unrealistically heavy weapons, and as long as they brace themselves, they can also handle gun recoils strong enough to get them off the ground. Which makes the unrealistic weapons more realistic in that world. Also, maybe the parts that let the weapons fold up & change forms are made of some nearly indestructible alloy that prevents mechanical failure in battle, but can't hold a blade edge.
4:57 also looks like some Burmese dha and some Chinese but some other countries also have them with a flat square tip it looks cool in my opinion especially for brute force
With Crescent Rose, Ruby is only actually able to maneuver it (Until the animation just became generic in the forms of weapons) by firing off a bullet everytime she swung it.
I would love to see you contrast this to the Burial Blade from bloodborne. It's kind of like a cutlass like blade that transforms into a scythe. Could we get your opinion on it?
As someone who enjoys basic level forging and making fantasy costumes that are actually functional what would be the idea way to mix a gun and a sword?
Historically there are gunswords, but usually using single-shot chambers meant for up-close shots rather than precision or distance. A lot of designs suffer from the difference in how you would hold a gun or a sword - holding a sword doesn't give the same arm bracing you need for a gun's recoil. So... "Ideal" really boils down to what functionality you're looking for. Gunknives and gunswords exist, but again, were meant for point blank single shots usually, or short to medium range deterrence. Anything more precise or ranged or something for repeated fire alters the sword design. Squall Leonhart's gunblade from FF8 could...technically work, but it's way too forward heavy with such a large blade. I think one of the better gunsword designs I've seen was a sniper rifle, a la Borderlands 2, with a barrel-length bayonet, but the illustrator modified portions of the chamber and stock to be handles so the entire bayonet length could be utilized as a cutting blade with some additional half-swording capability.
I can just imagine the quartermaster going “and what caliber does your weapon use?” To each new student and then having to go and buy like 30 new types, adding to an increasingly large and complicated list.
Yea i love the reloading since u onky season two seasons ill just say reloading is done well in the series you often see ruby outting a new um magazine or cartridge sorry not know whichccall it , blake is seen adding her magazine and yang reloading we allways see the main team reload a at some point in fight they use it to add some frames to the fight
Each of the main four's weapons gave a name the only on i can remeber is ruby's sycth is called crescent rose. Plz list the others in the replies if you know them
It was a pretty good video but a slight nitpick and a relatively fun fact. First, the nitpick, Dust isn't magic, there's a clear difference in the show between magic and Dust, granted only having seen the first two seasons you wouldn't see the actual magic in the show so it's understandable. Now into the fun fact, the weapons in RWBY are created to optimize the characters special powers (semblances) so for RWBY the reason why Crescent Rose is a sniper rifle and a scythe is to allow her to hit her enemies from a distance and then immediately close in on them with her immense speed. Another good example it's a character that you wouldn't have seen if you've just watched the first two seasons, his name is Qrow Branwen and his weapon is a sword,a scythe, and a shotgun and the reason why it is all close range weapons is because his semblance it's bad luck and it works best when his enemies are close to him.
It became such a trend to knock rwby at some point and I never understood it. I am a fan, bordering on superfan status, but I usually know if a Fandom I'm in has flaws. And while this one does its not nearly as bad as many of its contemporaries. I just don't get why so many felt the need to scream to the heavens their hatred for it. So thanks for giving the show at least a small chance instead of jumping on the hate wagon.
Because it's easy to excuse with Monty's death and the emotionally angry written letter to attack those who work on RWBY which has been proven to be untrustworthy. If those things didn't exist, then those who talk BS would've just been ignored or laughted at... but doing it here you are apparently not caring about Monty's death, have low entertainment standards or defending RT's shady side.
@@tobiasskorupa1649 not sure if you're attacking me here, but that really doesn't matter. As stated I'm a big fan of the rwby series, but that doesn't make me some kind of roosterteeth fanboy. I heard of their work practices and I'm glad whenever issues like that come out. I haven't kept up with it, but hopefully conditions have improved. Ialso refuse to subscribe to their frankly asinine subscription service. As far as entertainment, the quality of the show has been slipping, but that doesn't mean I'm going to forget how much I loved the show when it was at its best. As far as Monty, of course that's a tragedy, death always is. But what he created was/ is still amazing. I'll always have to wonder what it might be like if he was still here though. I'm really excited to see what the anime adaptation will be like. I do have to ask. What letter you're referring to btw. Like I said, I don't usually seek out reasons to be upset so I don't know about all the behind the scenes drama.
@@leonardrodriguez1501 Nah, I was just answering why and how it became possible to just say RWBY is bad by people who don't even watch the show. The letter was right after V3 finished, so that's why V3 is still praised by the people who say everything went downhill after Monty died, but that was just before work on V3 started. Or right as it started, it's been a long time and not invested into any drama at all and I do not remember the name who wrote it. To be honest, I am afraid of the anime adaptation, not because I dislike it... It's just opens the way and already does of people saying it's the way RWBY should've been or that I now am getting even more dunked on, because RWBY is my favorite work of fiction. Even my FAVORITE streamers and RU-vidrs make me already feel bad for liking RWBY, those who I watched and followed for years just say stuff like: RWBY is so bad and do not watch it! Imagine if everyone now tells me to watch the anime instead or that I am a lesser person just for watching the OG RWBY.
@@tobiasskorupa1649 the plus side, you don't have to listen to any of them. Sounds like you are a fellow nerd, and the great thing about being a nerd is exactly what they try to make fun of us for. Loving things without restraint no matter how weird they might be. I remember accidentally getting into a big thing not long ago about the new Evangelion series. I think the issue was that I called it a reboot, and apparently that offended someone. Somehow saying I liked it because it was a reboot was like saying I hated the original. But I loved both the new and the original, so I couldn't even figure out what they were angry about. Same with rwby. I honestly can't figure out why do many people dedicate so much time on something they claim to hate. I don't even remember what one RU-vidr name was, but I think I'd watch a video they did about how rwby had messed up some specific trope and it sounded interesting. It wasn't, and I keep getting more videos in my feed from them all about why they hated every aspect of the show so much. Yet somehow they were still watching it. I blocked it. Hate thrives on attention, don't give them any. I say, be excited about the anime. And feel free to love them both. Have a great, drama free day my friend.
