A part 2 to my previous video from May 2022. I knew eventually I would make a matching belt for a fancy show rig (what I've come to call the "Wedding Rig"). It starts with a brief overview of the Tandy Pro Strap Edge Beveler; a nifty tool that's probably more suited to the saddle and tack folks. Shout out to them for sending me one to try out. Leather being used is Tandy Selection grade 8-9 oz.

Looks like it leaves a good even beveled edge. Weaver also has a tool like this. As far as doing white on leather I would never use it cause I would have red places all over it. Seems I can't do any leather work without cutting myself, LOL. 😩

That looks like something they would have used in the old movie westerns, I mean like Tom Mix or Hopalong Cassidy would have worn this. Maybe Roy Rogers too. Very blingy, flashy gun rigs were a big deal in the old western serials, too. That's awful nice work.

You mention Tandy Selection for this project. How would you compare it to Hermann Oak as far as stamping and the burnish it gives? I like the light color of imported vegtan as it gives a more accurate stain color. It is much cheaper than HO but at what sacrifice? 8 to 9 ounce is my usual weight. Thank you once again.
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather Год назад
It tools nicely. It's been a while since I had any Hermann Oak. I live close to Tandy so I buy all my leather there. Nothing like being able pick out hides yourself.

@@RoadAgentLeather You are right about the ability to select what you buy. I shop at the Mesquite Tx store. Very nice people there. When I am looking for leather there I’m picky and really go through the stack. When I’m finished I restack it as a courtesy.They don’t mind at all.

How do you like the double edge beveller? Do you think it's worth the money?
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather Год назад
Depends on how much straps you're cutting. I think if you're a full-scale shop making saddle and tack all day it would be useful. It's overkill for what I do though.

Wherever you want the belt to hang, yes. I take that number and mark it as the spot for the second-tightest hole in the billet.

Beautiful work as usual...! 👍🏽👍🏽 What do you prefer to use for the liner..? I've heard leather, sheep, pig, ect...
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather Год назад
I only use milled veg-tan for my liners now. It's veg-tan that's been thrown in a tumbler as a last processing step. This results in a soft, almost chrome-tan feel. The primary benefit for me is that I can glue and stitch it "flat" without having to be concerned about it wrinkling when folded.

Ha! Thanks for the subscribe! I get that a lot on this video. However, if you watch the movie, it's Buster's shirt, pants, and hat that are white. His gun rig is brown. My video "Making a Western Style Cowboy Cartridge Belt" is more of an ode to his holster and belt.

How big is your workbench and what size would you recommend having? I need to find or build a bigger bench but I’m not sure just how big to go
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather Год назад
My main working area is two tables I made from 2x4s and plywood. So roughly 4x8 feet. I'd say you need and area that's big enough to comfortably lay out the hides you're usually working with. Mine started that way .... but now I can barely roll out a double shoulder on it.
