Hello You Tube, it’s Rob from Maxwells Grass Cutting Services, based in the North East of England.
Today’s video, last year I purchased the Weibang WB 486 CRB Scarifier for £1200. Was this a wise decision, did it pay for its self and add value to the business, or has it been an expensive ornament gathering dust in the garage?
Let me know what you think.
Please like and subscribe.
All the very best.
Remember, when the green gold is growing, keep mowing.
All the best.
Rob.

Hold onto it, you'll need it as soon as you sell it on. Offer it in conversation with every customer that mentions improving the lawn. You'll know if something isn't used enough when the fuel turns to varnish in the carb😅 take care buddy
@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices
Thanks Nathan . I did run the fuel dry, wise words and great advice. All the best.

Rob add the price off hire of the scarifier on top of the job. Go and price in from the hire shop. I had a big job on the last 2 days chipper was £80 a day. The same next week on a job chipper will be out the 2 days. The chipper has paid for itself now it all profit.

Scarifying is hard to get your money back on. I bought the similar camon one a few years back for about the same. Customers get scared of the pricing. Needs to be at least £30 an hour plus rubbish (East Midlands). My rubbish collector bag is useless so just don't use it and have one of those motorised brushes for the multi-tool to get in a big pile before bagging which is a game changer. Keep up the good work mate 👍
@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices
Cheers John. I agree £30 an hours is spot on for scarification work. All the best.

As for the scarifier treat it as an investment like you should any expensive tool. Look at the cost over 5 years for example. Then it will seem a better investment. I have the same scarifier and it's a beast.

Pleased you like it James.

Hi Rob, great vid as always, and excellent to hear that you’re busy… I priced up a full lawn scarification and renovation today. It’s 2065m2. I think it will finish my body off for the season, and it hasn’t even started yet! 😂 Good money though. All the best

Congratulations, I hope it goes well. All the best and thanks for watching.

You will find the ones you do once or twice a year, there will be less debris each time you go, and you can keep charging the same. So basically, it will get quicker, and you will make more 💰

Hi Rob, hope you are well. i have been scarifying for few years now, i cover all sorts grow over the years. but as with any bit of kit it take a bit of time to bring its keep home. but i find that the best marketing is communication sounds silly but how i mean this is i talk to all my clients i tell them i am planning something new they say ohh can you do that for me. and this works great (for me) i have people i cut a hedge for asking about scarifying and then when they get past the lawn i can take that on but as i have said in the past i am now booked up until Christmas but i will have some fall off the books pass away go into care move etc. we all have that but i also know i have new bits coming hence the reviews i have mentioned in the past also. and in my eye you have just gave your self a review and plan for the scarifying work. look back in two month how much you have done and tell all you work for that you do this and see how many people ask for it. i look forward to hearing the answer to that mate. all the best Shane @davies environmental services.

I bought a "pre-loved" scarifier 12yrs ago and same here. So much so, I forgot I had it! I use it on about 4 gardens, twice a year now. But also mine which needs it every year due to shade, clay soil and a dog. Good idea to get yourself out there and advertise. And yes it's a faff to do it properly, and it looks awful when you've butchered their garden but the long term benefits are worth it. Pricing is a nightmare which I struggle with due to no experience. Good luck with your self promotion and let's hope you don't get too many!
@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices
Thanks for that and good luck with your business. Your so right. Pricing is extremely difficult. All the best.

I have hired a aeration machine a few times and managed to get a fairly busy diary of about 20 customers signed up for that service. Machine hire for the week was about £100 and each customer was about £70 a visit. Worked out not bad money. And less waste than the scarifying
@BottleBrookGardens

Nice one. I’ve got a big lawn renovation in March, hiring a scarifier and aerator and it’s like an extra £30 for the week rather than a day for each machine. Going to try do like what you’ve said
@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices
Aeration and scarification are two separate entities. Thanks for watching and your comment.
@ianlawlessthegreenkeeper952
Hi Rob, I tend to use mine with full lawn renovations, cut, scarify, aeration, over seed, top dress, treatment (granular/liquid), that's 6 additional services so it can add up to great ££££ for one garden alone.... Remember you can scarify on a regular basis, just don't go down too deep, will keep the turf clean and solid tine on a regular basis too (if you get your hands on a Aerator) keep up the great work mate👌

Thanks Ian. Wise words. Appreciate your advice. 👍🏻

It’s an investment. I bought a Weibang Scarifier 40 cm few years back and the way I made my investment back is offer it into conversation with my current customers for an additional service (obviously appropriate time of the season) and then picked up dozen new clients that just wanted their lawn me treated . It’s not something you use all year round but it is a machine you can quickly earn your money back on it . Furthermore, sell the whole process as well not just scarification eg. Scarify, aeration, conditioning topsoil and overseed as well as treatments throughout the growing season as well. It’s certainly hard work and lengthy process
@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices
Thank you Buster. I appreciate your advice. All the best.

Don't forget about upselling post treating residual moss with iron sulphate and a spring feed to help the lawn recover. Also I never charge based on X times the lawn cut price, get down and see what depth the moss is, 2 passes is standard, but I have seen me have to do four passes, my record was 17 ton bags off one property 😬

Good evening Mr maxwell hope your are well and enjoying the slack off time. I do scarrifiy a few lawns, but I do them in the autumn. Reson being, if I scarrifiy in the spring and take a lot of moss, etc, from the lawns then the customer has to look at a dirt patch for the first part of the summer. If I do in the autumn, I have more time, and the customer is more often than not, indoors, and not sat out on the patio. Fertilise in spring, nice thick grass from early summer, then make a mess when it doesn't matter so much.
@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices
Wise words, thank you for the advice. All the best to you.

As you know I love my Weibang mower. But I couldn't justify the cost of the scarifier. So I opted for the Stihl RL540 scarifier at the end of the season last year. Its not been used yet. But I do have a few jobs booked in already for it come march. Although not enough to pay for itself yet. I'm looking to work a bit less this season. So I'm not so worried about chasing every job. This time next year Rodney..... I won't be a millionaire!

I offer a bronze sliver and gold service and I add scarifying in with my gold package at the end of the year but and in the cost with there weekly or by weekly visits so the extra cost is spread throughout the year and is extending my season at the end of the year along with adding in weed and feed throughout the year thus making the the grass grow quicker and requires cutting more often therefore moving customers from a by weekly service to a weekly service at a higher rate per cut to cover the cost of the extra work at the end of the year if this makes sense

Do you just scarify or top dress and overseen where needed, I wouldn’t leave a heavily moss infested lawn without fertiliser and seed as it will just become a haven for weeds.
